Book Description
Everybody loves a Wiener dog. Their funny bodies with their short little legs, floppy ears, and pleading eyes make Dachshunds irresistible even to people who claim to dislike small dogs. Also, Dachshunds are natural clowns. They can keep a room in stitches with their antics and coax one more dog cookie out of the strictest disciplinarian. In addition, Dachshunds are great with kids, love to play, and can be extremely affectionate. On the other hand, Dachshunds can sometimes be very willful and hard to train, often bark a lot, and can rival a Labrador Retrievers in their ability to dismantle your furniture.
Is this playful and inquisitive breed the right dog for you and your family? Dachshunds For Dummies provides the answer to this and all your questions about getting, caring for and living with this unique breed. Life-long Dachshund fancier and leading pet journalist, Eve Adamson gets you up and running with what you need to know to:

Dachshunds for Dummies.......2007-07-20
Not very helpful. Could be talking about any dog. Recipes in the back of the book are dangerous for dogs. Some of the ingredients are toxic to dogs and could make them sick or kill them. Not happy about that. This book should know helpful and healthy lifestyles for animals. This is the second dog for dummies book I've bought. Won't buy any more.

Dachshunds are very loving and wonderful dogs, but they are also some of the most stubborn creatures that you will ever meet. I highly recomend this Dachshunds for Dummies for all dachshund owners (both present and potential).

I can't believe all the info in this book! It covers dog training and even nutrition. Worth every penny of the purchase price. Made me feel confident in my training techniques. I taught both of my dogs the "down" command in a week.
FANTASTIC.......2007-02-20
I have had dogs my whole life, but when I got my new puppy, I decided to read this book. I think its FANTASTIC. It taught me A LOT... I found new ways to train my dog that I had never thought of. I think anyone that owns a dog should get this book. Its great.

Smart Buy.......2006-11-10
This book is very easy to understand and train your dog. Explains why the training works. Includes basic obedience but also tricks. Have fun with your dog.
A great resource.......2006-11-10
I have actually bought this book twice. Once for myself to train my Chesapeake Bay Retriever puppy, and the second time for my father and his new Chessie pup. Great methodology on how to train your pet with our without treats. Outlines step by step procedures for getting your dog to do both basic obedience and advanced tricks. I still refer to the book from time to time when the dog gets unruly. Only negative is that the book could use better diagrams and pictures.
Definitely recommend picking this book up!

Not really for dummies!.......2007-09-26
This book is required reading for many retired racing greyhound adoption groups, and with good reason: it's excellent. We read it twice before making the plunge to adopt our first greyhound (we're up to two). It's hard to translate the written word on training to actually doing it, but stick with it. I took one of Ms. Livingood's classes and found my hound and I were ahead of the game because we had been using the training tips from the book. Within three months, we passed the Canine Good Citizen test (okay, I admit it ... greyhounds are naturally good citizens).
So, what are you waiting for? Buy the book and adopt a greyhound!
Required reading !!!.......2007-07-08
The last word for the lay person on retired racers.
AFTER reading this book cover to cover (2 sittings), I adopted the most wonderful ex racing girl of 8 years. It is the best thing I have ever done. If you will always keep your dog leashed and are genuinely interested in this sweet, loving and gentle breed please get this book and bring one of these wonderful K9's into your heart and home forever. You will be so happy you did.
A great insight into owning Racing Greyhounds.......2007-06-27
I bought this book to help me decide whether I would be making the right choice in adopting a racing greyhound. I wasn't disappointed, this book did tell me a lot of the things I needed to know before making the decision final. I now know what to expect when I am ready to bring a racing greyhound into my house, my life, and my heart.
The training methods in this book may work for some, but for me, it is a little vague. I'm fairly certain that the training method detailed in this book may work for some dogs, but for many others, it could achieve little to nothing. I advise researching other training methods after reading the one detailed, and making your own mind up. No two dogs are the same, and no two owners are the same, and ultimately, the choice of training method has to be based on the traits of both dog and owner.
Well worth reading, especially for those inexperienced with dogs, and in particular greyhounds.
Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies.......2007-02-24
An excellent guide for the adoption of our first Greyhound.
I learned a lot.......2007-01-19
We adopted our first greyhound knowing so much about them. I have done days and weeks and hours on end researching them. I came across this book and bought it for my husband who's not on the computer as much as I am. And we both learned a lot from this book...it's very detailed. I would definately suggest reading this book if you have or want a greyhound

Reading for Dummies.......2007-01-06
This book is concise, quick to read, and easy to understand. Although some was common sense, there was much more that was important and unknown for the novice breeders. I would highly recommend this book for anyone entertaining thoughts of breeding any kind of animals for fun or profit.
not just for "dummies".......2006-11-10
I have been a dog owner my entire life, have worked with dogs, and owned or fostered/rescued many myself. When I aquired my first AKC Pug, I began toying with the idea of breeding and raising Pugs myself. Aware that many Pugs suffer health problems due to negligant breeding, and that many dogs end up in shelters due to overpopulation, I knew that I needed to do a lot of research and preparation before making a decision to breed my dog.
I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the breeding of purebred dogs, whether for pet or for show. It touches on all the topics of genetics, selection, whelping, and so much more. And its written so that anyone can understand it with ease.
In addition to this, reading this information would help puppy buyers to discern what REALLY is a good breeder when they are looking to purchase a quality puppy, the things to look for.
reading this book by itself will not automatically make you a "good breeder" its just a start, but a good start. You also need to make sure you are always under the supervision of your veterinarian as well.
Breeding Dogs For Dummies.......2006-03-22
Great starter book. Picked up a few pointers that helped me understand the next book which was definitely NOT a primer. Plus this book was easy to bookmark for future reference. Would recommend this title to anyone who is just getting started and also has a mentor to refer to.
Breed 'em?.......2005-10-19
What do you have to do? Hire a shadkhan? It should be a major project, like a dynastic marriage, you should have allies in the next war?
Don't they breed anyway? Everybody I ever met, people or dogs, they had it on their own agenda, nobody had to tell them.
Excellent book..Breeding Dogs for Dummies.......2005-10-12
This book has a lot of very good information. It is very well put together, and the author has a sence of humor.

Puppies for Dummies.......2007-09-12
The title says it all. What a great book. I've used it so much the cover is getting worn. My pup is well behaved and I, the owner, am well trained also.
Puppies For Dummies.......2007-03-12
As a breeder of Labrador Retrievers I find this to be a must have bible for my new pup buyers, I give the book with the pup to encourage people to raise their new pup using correct training methods.
A good basic overview of puppy care and training.......2007-01-25
This book doesn't pretend to be an ultimate resource for all puppy-raising and -training issues, so if you buy it knowing that it will provide a good basic overview of the issues you'll face, you won't be disappointed.
I would recommend that new or -- preferably -- prospective puppy owners read this book first and then follow up with something like "The Art of Raising a Puppy" by the Monks of New Skete and/or one or two of Patricia B. McConnell's books on dog behavior (like "The Other End of the Leash"), you'll be pretty-well educated on most of what you'll need to know to be a responsible puppy companion and you'll be on the on the way to raising a polite, well-socialized dog.
This book REALLY helped me........2007-01-24
I recently got Izzy, my very first puppy. I read about 10 books in preparation for her, and this book really helped some it all up and explain so many things. Definately recommend this book to first time pet owners.
Puppies for dummies.......2006-11-12
This book has it all! An answer to every question about raising a proper puppy! I highly recommend this book to owners of puppies.

fine for puppy owner, not for adult dog owner.......2007-04-25
This book has some great ideas and I believe that they do work, that is why I gave the book 4 stars. For me, however, it didn't work. I have an adult dog and I felt a lot of the tips were geared more toward puppies and the normal puppy potty training. My dog goes to the bathroom in secret and usually in the early morning hours when I can't see her. Putting her in a crate overnight would probably emotionally damage her not to mention keep our entire family up all night with her crying (she's way too used to sleeping with us at night). Maybe I'm just not consistent enough or something, I don't know, I guess I'm just looking for that " magic pill" that will instantly train my dog! If anyone finds one, please give me a call!
House Training.......2007-03-09
Ummm-I think the dog just has to want to do the correct thing. Good ideas in the book but it didn't work for us, but we have 7 dogs.
Housetraining for Dummies.......2006-06-30
I was pleased with the format of this book, and the simple instructions ands explainations. I bought it to help me train my new puppy, and it was very useful. I'm not exactly a pro at dog training. This book made a big difference.
Very informative and well written.......2006-03-20
This book gives a great deal of very good advice for housetraining your dog in several different ways. I have employed many of the techniques described in this book. My only wish is that more space had been devoted to indoor housetraining for smaller dogs and toy breeds. But, since indoor training is a relatively new concept and this book appears to have been published about five years ago, I can understand why more space was not devoted to the subject. And, admittedly, it is likely a rather small percentage of us for whom indoor training would apply. Overall, worth the read.
Accessible and comprehensive.......2002-08-30
McCullough covers every aspect of housetraining, a very important part of living with a dog. Her writing is lively and accessible and she leaves no stone unturned. She doesn't shy away from any aspect of the topic and doesn't resort to cutesy euphemisms. Whether you're about to acquire a dog who will need housetraining or are already living with a dog who has potty problems, Housetraining for Dummies will provide the information you need to tackle the task.

Customer Reviews:
It's good, and very informational..........2007-02-14
This reference book was really informational. It did however focus a lot of it on a golden retreiver puppy or how to take care of one. If you already have a grown golden retriever, I don't think this book is right for you, but it's still good at looking at health tips and information.
There are a lot of instances in the book where the author makes her own comments, as if she is talking. If that will bother you, then don't get this book.
It's a really good book if you are deciding to get a Golden Retriever puppy or new dog because it gives you fundamental things to know for taking care of a puppy or new dog coming home. I think a person should read this book before getting a dog or golden retriever because it does help educate you to learn more on the breed. However, this book is mostly generalized stuff that you can already search on the internet or online resources.
I think this book was very helpful, so I think you should get it if you have no idea on how to take care of a dog.
See ya!
Good Book.......2007-02-10
Alot of puppy info which I didn't need since my dog is now an adult. I think there is no doubt this book has something for all Retriever owners. A must have for your library.
Book for dummies........2006-08-10
This book is for dummies. That is true. The thing is that after reading this book you are still dummy. That what's the point in reading it?
A MUST HAVE!!.......2006-07-11
I had planned on using this book as a quick reference when I bought it a few days ago, but instead it was so well written that I read the entire book already. Very informative and really held my interest. I am re-reading certain parts again.
Useful Information!.......2005-09-01
This brook provided us with a great deal of useful information. We had an abundance of love for our new four legged friend; yet our family did not have a clue about raising her!! In my opinion, this book is more than beneficial in learning more about Golden Retrievers.

Great reference.......2007-09-27
This book is really handy. It's nice that it's specific to the chihuahua breed--lots of information to help this new puppy owner differentiate between the general advice for all puppies and approaches best suited to my pup.
One of my favorite things about this book is the way it has really helpful information like diagrams of different tail positions and whether they indicate something is wrong. Great reference.
great book.......2007-08-05

Easy and fun to read, plus informative!.......2006-12-17
I found this book to be very easy and fun to read, plus extremely informative. It's a great book to buy BEFORE you get your Chihuahua because it puts everything into perspective. After I got my two Chihuahua puppies I carefully followed this book's instructions and my puppies immediately learned to be very obedient and it wasn't long before they were potty trained inside and outside the house. I highly recommend it!

awesome book!!.......2005-08-02
This book has taught me alot about pugs, especially because I am going to be not only a first time pug owner but also a first time dog owner. I have learned how to be patient in the training process and can't wait to put the skills and training ideas to work!!
too much but not enough.......2005-07-25
this is not good enough for the serious pug owner - it is too general regarding dogs but not nearly specific enough regarding pugs. the format is haphazard - one gets the impression that the author has 'read up' on pugs in order to write this book, but i doubt if she had owned or shown a pug. the index is all over the place; avoid this book and buy one by a professional pug expert.
Pug Dummies.......2005-07-10
This book covers everything you need to know about pugs. From care all the way to breeding and showing.
