The "Bible" of Discus Health.......2000-07-15
I have had this book since it was published and it is a complete guide to the health and well being of not only discus but other cichlids as well. If I have ever had a problem, a question or a need...this book has had the answer for me! It is, quite simply, the BEST there is...it is that simple.
a great book for both the beginner and the professional.......2000-05-25

The King of African Cichlids Tells All.......2003-12-21
The late Pierre Brichard was one of the very first exporters of African cichlids, especially those of Lake Tanganyika, as well as an avid photographer of them. He discovered numerous species, and several fish species are named for him (including Teleogramma brichardi, Synodontis brichardi, and Neolamprologus brichardi, "the fairy of Burundi").
This book was his major literary work.
It bears some of the sloppy editing that is so typical of TFH publications, and in some ways it is quite dated by now, but still, if you're interested in Tanganyikan fishes, you've really got to have this book. There is no substitute.
A good resource for the cichlid lover........2000-12-14
This is one of my favorite books. Although I think it is over priced, Brichard does a wonderful job of presenting the fish of Lake Tanganyika.
This book provides wonderful photos of virtually all of the fish and color morphs. The information provided on each fish is excellent as well.
This is a must have for the serious cichlidiot.
Terrific, all-encompassing book about African Cichlids!.......1998-12-04
This book is chock-full of color pictures and documentation on the various cichlids from Africa's enormous Lake Tanganyika. I was totally impressed with the expertise Pierre Brichard conveys about these incredibly intelligent and colorful fish.
Book Description
This book catalogues and characterizes all the known cichlid species of the lake on the basis of their distribution, coloration, and habitat preferences. A wealth of information and beautiful photos - collected during several hundred hours underwater oberservion - protray all known Tanganyika cichlids in their natural habitat. More than 920 color photos, most of them never published before!

Thorough and enjoyable.......2007-05-17
I purchased this book in order to learn about the Cichlids in my home tank. There is some good detail on diet, habitat and breeding of the different species available commercially but most of the book is devoted to fish in the wild. I would have liked to learn more about what other fish and invertibrates share space with the Cichlids in Lake Tanganyika. Overall a very good read and a keeper for the many well printed photographs which will help me identify fish in the future. I still can't see the difference between a Compressiceps and a Calvus but someday...
For Tropheus very overrated, but still godd.......2006-11-10
If you research the web, you will quickly find this book is recommended as the 'bible' for Tropheus enthusiasts. I found there to be about 10 pages of Trpopheus content. Good stuff, but thats it. Nice pictures and interesting background on the lake itself. Good book - but not if you are interested specifically in Tropheus.
Hihaaaaaaaa.......2002-07-20
Great book,buy it !
it contains all the information you will ever need regarding Tanganyikan cichlids.
Fantastic.......2000-05-30
This book is for advanced keepers of Tanganyika cichlids. It has the better fish photographs that I ever seen. The information is about the fish behavior in the lake. If you want to know how you must keep this fishes in an aquarium, choose another book. Fantastic.
Best book about Tanganyikan cichlids.......2000-03-21
This is am outsyanding book about Lake Tanganyika and its cichlids. It is loaded with pictures and information about the all cichlids in the lake, including distribution, feeding habits, breeding behavior and evolutionary speculation. It is not specifically concerned with how to care for these cichlids in the aquarium. However, the information it provides will be invaluable to anyone who maintains these animals (or wants to), and is also very interesting in and of itself.
Book Description
These colorful fish are native to Central and South America, Africa, and Asia, and hobbyists will find them available in many colors and varieties. Titles in the extensive Complete Pet Owner's Manuals series provide pet owners with basic information on keeping healthy, contented, well-cared-for animals. The series includes approximately 175 titles and covers pets of every kind: dogs, cats, and birds of many breeds, as well as fish, reptiles, rabbits, hamsters, and just about any other animal that people keep as a pet. The text in each manual is supplemented with many vivid, full-color photos, and with instructive, anatomically accurate line art. Good Starting Point for beginners.......2007-09-05
I purchased this book awhile back when I was first getting into Cichlids. It has alot of useful info, and it's easy to follow and refer back to. It gives good tips, and informative basic overveiw. If you're looking for more detailed and/or species/region specific info, this isn't the right book for you. If you are just getting into the hobby, this is a fabulous choice!
Good beginners information for Cichlids.......2006-02-02
This books gives someone wanting to learn about Cichlids a good starting point. It covers several varieties, explaining their origins, behavior, breeding habbits and so on. It also gives some pointers on what varieties can coexist and some that shouldn't be mixed. Not all-ecompassiing by any means, but gives a person a good beginning overview to to Cichlids and to help you decide if this is the type of fish you want to put in your aquarium. I've read it to completion, am still interested and now am looking for more detailed information.

Dissapointing and bloated, but has nice pictures.......2002-12-15
I got the Lexicon with the idea that it would prove to be a useful identification tool for the various species and strains of cichlids I keep. In that sense, the book is fairly successful - there is a plethora of beautiful photos of many, many species.
There are some serious problems with this book though. The most glaring problem is that Axelrod, in at least two instances, has printed two copies of the same photo and called the specimen two different species !!! He uses the same photo, just reversed, for Aulonucara jacobfreirgei as he does for another Aulonocara sp. Same thing with two species of Apistogramma.
Another dissapointing feature about this book is the information content of the text - there isn't any. Axelrod's favourite topic in the text is himself. Axelrod is more interested in telling us about how important he is and about how much influence he has had on the aquarium hobby than he is in providing useful biological information. Oftentimes the text more resembles the ramblings of a senile old man than a scientific discussion of the species in question. Additionally, the length of the text could have been considerably shortened by replacing the often lengthy sentance about who described the species and when with the taxonomic standard of putting the name of the species' author(s) and the year of description behind the species name.
My final beef with this book is the poor taste of the author is his discussions of the classification of cichlids(actually, rants is probably a better description). Axelrod repeatedly poo-poo's the works of cladists (Axelrod calls them splitters)- challenging cladistic theory is all well and good, but in most instances the criticism is in the form of a snide comment about the other author or their classification. Never is any evidence provided to support Axelrod's claims/criticisms - one is left with the impression that the reason Axelrod opposes a new classification is simply that it is new and different than his ideas. Some of Axelrod's comments border on slander - this should never have been allowed to go to print.
The Lexicon had great potential, but overall it is a bloated, arrogant work. With proper editing it would have been much more useful. If you want a book with nice pictures, than this book is OK - just dont read anything in it :-)
A good resource for the cichlid lover........2000-12-14
I have to admit I was a bit disappointed when I got this book. It wasn't that the book wasn't good, but it simply wasn't incredible, which is what I expected.
The book does a good job of describing the major families of cichlids. Detail is provided about where they come from, what the environment there is like, and general information about the temperment of that family of fish.
Unfortunately there isn't always details about each individual fish.
The book provides a color picture of most fish, although the quaility is sometimes lacking. Unfortunately many fish are featured with only a color drawing, which in my opinion simply doesn't do the fish justice.
This is definetely a great gift for the cichlidiot!
An important book for the cichlid specialist.......1998-09-26
I purchased the first edition of this book as soon as it was available. It contains photos and drawings of as many cichlid species as possible. It attempts better than any other book to include every known cichlid. If you have purchased a cichlid species and want to identify it or confirm the name you purchased it under, this book is useful. There is a wealth of information on the hobby history of species and husbandry information on some. General information from introductory books about cichlids is seldom repeated here. There are species covered that have not been bred, or even never imported as aquarium subjects. Information will of course be sparse. Well known information about common species is omitted, but little-known information is here . If you will have only one cichlid book in your library, and want basic information, this is not that book. If you want several cichlid books, this should be one of them. And of course if you want the one book with the most cichlid pictures and the most cichlid listings, THIS IS IT. I enjoy Dr. Axelrod's observations and opinions. I've read a number of books and magazine articles by him, and you may have to reread and read other works of his to appreciate them fully. Dr. Axelrod has been very influential in the development and directions the aquarium hobby has taken since the fifties. I would give this book another star, but the first edition which I have is already missing some newly imported species and there are some cichlid photos I'd like to see replaced . That's probably not fair of me since there will always (I hope) be new species introduced to the hobby and better photos taken. If you want a good introductory book, I suggest THE CICHLID AQUARIUM by Dr. Paul Loiselle. I prefer the organization and index of the first edition of Dr. Loiselle's book, but either one is a find for the new cichlid enthusiast.
Every Fish But..........1998-04-09
If you want a book that shows you a picture or a drawing of every cichlid that there is then this book is for you. BUT if you want to learn about the fish you see then this book is not for you. It mentions very little in the way of behaviour, eating habits etc. If you want to keep cichlids in an aquarium, rather than go out and catch them, then this book isn't for you. I was very disappointed after I bought the book. It shows lots of very beautiful pictures but tells you little more.
Book Description
This is the VOLUME 1 of a unique photo reference guide with over 390 large and brilliant coclor photos of cichlids from Africa: mainly Malawi, some Tanganyika and a few Victoria Lake cichlids. Hardcover, 206 pages.
THIS BOOK IS WRITTEN IN ENGLISH, GERMAN AND CHINESE.
Customer Reviews:
Good book.......2004-06-28
Oddly enough, it appears only 1 of the cichlids on the cover is an actul Mbuna, the rest being Haps.
Best Malawi pictorial reference!.......2002-06-08
Best Malawi pictorial reference, the photos are first rate with an example of male and female photos for each species. Don't buy another Malawi Cichlid without it!
Excellent Book.......2001-04-24
An excellent book, with crisp clear photos in a simple reader friendly format. Great for seeing what those plain Fry are going to grow to look like. Also useful in seperating breeds with similiarly marked females and juveniles. You can take this one off the bookshelf and leave it on the coffee table.
Excellent Photography and Identification.......2000-10-11
I have rated this book a 5-star book based only on the photographs in the book. Easy species of fish is shown in brilliant color against black backgrounds on every page. Teh fish are large pictures too so you can view a lot of detail. The other portion of this book has common names and scientific nomenclature for each species.
The book will give some brief lines of information regarding habits of the fish but it is very limited. A great book for choosing fish you would like to obtain and contacting your local pet stores to then purchase for you. If you are looking for breeding, diseases, feeding, etc, then you would do best to find another reference.
At Least the Pictures are Pretty.......2000-04-17
The photographs in this book are magnificent. That is where its usefullness ends. The content is very short on practical cichlid husbandry information. If you don't own a cichlid aquarium this book is a great way to have a few choice pictures to look at, but it won't give you the information you need to successfully enter this part of the hobby. I found Dr. Paul Loiselle's "Fishkeeper's Guide to African Cichlids" a much more practical book. I would also have to highly recommend Dr. Wolfgang Staeck and Horst Linke's Books "African Cichlids 1" and "African Cichlids 2".
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Cichlid Book.......2007-03-16
The Pocket Professional Guide to Cichlids is an excellent book for the care and identification of the gambit of cichlids from around the world. My only disapointment was the lack of some of the very rare cichlids in the hobby. However The Guide does cover most of the cichlids commonly and uncommonly kept in the hobby. A very good buy.
Nice compact volume, lots of good info, needs common name index.......2007-01-19
Good reference book on looking up cichlids. Even my teen-agers who are getting into our new tank are spending some time reading through this book.
It has useful information on most species such as maximum size, water conditions, food needs, temperament & compatibility. With some species with color variations or closely related species, it uses common descriptions applicable to all of them, and shows photos of the variations.
But it is missing a common-name index which it sorely needs. Hence, only 4 stars.

Customer Reviews:
Good little book, but..........2003-03-31
Good little book, but some stunning errors in husbandry descriptions which could be a potential disaster for beginning Mbuna keepers. I highly recommend that aquarists look for at least a second opinion before choosing individual species as described in this book.
Best Little Cichlid Book I've Ever Read!.......2001-05-22
This is THE best little cichlid book for Lake Malawi. But don't let the word little fool you, this book is packed with information on dozens of Lake Malawi cichlids. I especially like that the book breaks down the lake's cichlids into the two main categories of mbuna and Haplochromines. There are over 100 excellent color photos of the most popular species accompanied by descriptions of natural habitat, size, husbandry requirements, diet, and breeding. I always take this book with me when I go to a fish auction or my local aquarium society meeting. There are other books that contain information on more species but none that gives you this much information at such a great price!
Excellent guide to Malawi Cichlids.......2001-02-18
Book Lake Malawi Cichlids describes natural habitats of Lake Malawi, different groups of cichlids and gives very good instructions how to set up aquarium that will match fish's natural requirements. It contains beautiful photos (some of them also taken in the nature!) and descriptions of some aquariums cichlids. It contains a lot of information given in very understandable way, I missed that in many other more comprehensive books. I recommend this book to all beginners and also to more advanced aquarists.
Customer Reviews:
Intresting but not very precise information.......2000-04-02
Complete Book of Dwarf Chiclids by Hans Joachim Richter is quite a big, beautiful book. Full of photos, schemes and drawings it is quite disapointing when you read it. The marjority of books on dwarf chiclids focus on south american dwarf chiclids. This book goes further and bring some african species too, but in both south american and african chiclids there is an seriuos problem : lack ok essencial information. The book describes few species of chiclids, it gives basic info, but as a hobbyist, I think I would expect more of this beautiful book. I know it is hard to keep an book up to date, specially with some genus like Apistogramma, in witch new species are being described every day. One final observation : The author is an exellent photographer, his book has marvellous photos....if he could update this book with more info, it would be just great!
