Not everything about Angelfish, nor the Complete Owner's Manual........2005-07-07
This book is totally not for those who aren't into breeding Angelfish. It is not in basic termonology in some areas. Very brief in areas you want more information on. If you want a book about Angelfish that is helpful to anyone wanting to know more than how to breed them and worth your time, look beyond this one.
I love this little book.......2005-03-17
The book is small, but very informative, and you feel you KNOW a lot about angelfish after reading it. I recommend this book highly to all angelfish lovers! A "must have"!
A great book on keeping and breeding angelfish.......2004-01-08
As a previous reviewer noted, the editorial review is incorrect -- this is a book about freshwater angelfish, not reef-dwelling saltwater angelfish. Whoever submitted the editorial review is a doofus, but that shouldn't be held against the book or its author.
For a small, inexpensive book Angelfish: Everything About... provides a tremendous amount of information.
The sections I found most valuable were those on selecting and purchasing angelfish (appropriate size and age, how to maximize chances of a breeding pair), genetic traits of fancy angelfish (veiltail, black, black lace, marble, new gold, commercial darks and marbles, non-allelic gold, smokey, chocolate, ghost, blushing, zebra, half-black, and pearly), breeding angelfish, and raising fry.
While I'm not interested in angelfish genetics per se, the descriptions of the fancy traits are very helpful when browsing the sites of angel breeders like Angels Plus. It also explains why some fish are so much more expensive than others.
History, tank selection (for show or breeding), feeding (the section on live food is better and more comprehensive than most I've seen in general aquarium books), diseases and treatment, and water quality are all well covered. The book has an index, glossary, and dozens of color photographs.
Review of the review.......2003-09-19
I have not read this book, and based on the book description I would not buy it:
"Editorial Reviews
Book Description
These tropical reef-dwellers make beautiful additions to any tank, "
The fish pictured on the cover is a freshwater angelfish, pterophyllum scalare. "Reef-dweller" refers to the marine angelfish, a completely unrelated species. Freshwater and marine aquaria are wholly different fields, and whoever wrote this blurb had clearly not even looked at the book. It doesn't bode well.
Book Description
Freshwater angelfishes are easily considered the most popular freshwater aquarium fishes and have been a staple in tropical fish hatcheries for decades. Whether you are interested in breeding these fishes for profit or merely for fun, this book supplies all the information you will need to be successful, including tips on mate selection, the importance of imprinting, and how to feed the newly-hatched fry. It also describes how to set up and maintain the type of aquaculture system required for angelfishes and provides illustrational photographs. Read this comprehensive guide to learn the process of breeding angelfishes from start to finish and become an expert breeder in no time at all.

A "user friendly" guide to assist them in the proper care and assessment of health and longevity of their angelfish.......2006-05-07
An Informative Guide To Breeding And Raising Angelfishes by tropical fish expert Ed Stansbury is an informative introduction to the selection, maintenance, and nutritional care for angelfish. Descriptively exploring variations of angelfish and particulars of genetics, Breeding And Raising Angelfishes knowledgeably presents details of water quality, dietary aspects, reproduction, and diseases with respect to the quite beautiful and enduringly popular angelfish. An Informative Guide To Breeding And Raising Angelfishes is very strongly recommended as introductory reader for anyone searching for a "user friendly" guide to assist them in the proper care and assessment of health and longevity of their angelfish.

Not Your Average Origami Book.......2006-07-12
I am a beginner folder, so I was more than a little challenged by the folding diagrams and directions in this book, which are clearly meant for more intermediate folkniks. However, with a little patience and fiddling, I have grown accustomed Engel's style of instruction, and enjoy puzzling out the assembly of his neato-keen models. Not only that, but the experience has enabled me to better interpret some of the diagrams I find on the web, which invariably have far less verbal instruction or may be in a different language altogether, though the symbols (arrows, dotted lines, et c.) are fairly standard.
What I think sets this book apart from other origami titles, aside from some pretty suave designs (an octopus? a dollar bill crab? How cool!), is that it isn't merely a collection of diagrams. Peter Engel spends something like the first third of the book on background. He sketches a brief history of the art around the world; he outlines basic geometric elements of the models he constructs; he gives a little idea of the creative process involved in designing new models, aesthetics and even politics involved in the art; and he draws parallels between origami structures and those found in the natural world, as well as those in fractal geometry. Also included is an account of an interview with the amazing late origami master, Akira Yoshizawa. Numerous references cited in the back of the book will probably serve as a good jumping off place for those interested in pursuing some of these esoteric topics. Despite the difficulties I have had in following some of the folding instructions, I think this is a well written and well rounded book, and I'm right glad i own it.
wanna learn history & philosophy?.......2006-03-18
this book is for advanced...first half is about history & philosophy of Origami & Zen. origami instructions are NOT for beginers. I was looking for somthing simple to teach my kids, so I needed to return it. But, as for the price it's a good book if you are looking for those stuff. the book is all black & white (no color pages), that's one of the reasons I did not like it (but what do you expect for $12?)
A brilliant book intended for hardcore aficionados.......2005-01-17
This is the most challenging origami book I have ever seen. Although I have grown up with origami and consider myself very experienced, I am still not able to complete some of the models near the end of the book.
The models near the end of the book require huge and very thin paper. You will need paper that is at least several feet to a side.
But I still say this book is a must-have for intermediate and advanced folders. Engel's folding style is very unique in the world of origami. Works like the rattlesnake and the caterpillar use original and unusual folding methods to obtain amazing results. The works are all very enjoyable to fold.
Extremely confusing.......2005-01-16
Many times, mid-model, the instructions are unclear and at times, folding lines appear on the drawings that are not given in the written instructions. I have been most frustrated with the several models I have tried. I am not a beginner but find these models and their lack of clear instructions too aggravating.
Great book...for the right person.......2004-03-29
The first half of the book is mostly text and reminds me of Godel, Escher, Bach (by Douglas Hofstadter) but for origami. I would like to see this half expanded out into a full book.
The second half is beautiful, intricate models such as the hummingbird, the octopus and the reindeer. I've been folding for about 6 months and I could tell just looking at the folding instructions that the later models like the crab were too hard. What I didn't realize was that even the relatively simple hummingbird is difficult.
At first I thought the folding instructions were unclear (and the hummingbird does have a typo, you should start with the butterfly fish instructions, not the angelfish ones). But after I puzzled my way through each step, I realized that these instructions are simply meant for a more proficient folder. All the information is there but the handholding is not.
If you are looking for some challenging models and thought-provoking text on creativity and origami, this is the book. If you are just starting out you could still buy it as a goal to work towards if that fits your personality. If that would be discouraging, I recommend "The Origami Handbook" as a simpler place to start.

Not what I thought it was going to be.......2007-09-30
Not a bad book, but it wasn't what I thought it was going to be. It was more like the author's memoirs regarding angelfish. I recently just got an angelfish and was looking for a book about taking care of them, what they like to eat, how many gallons of water they need, what fish I can put in a tank with them, blah blah. A basic pet owner's manual basically, but that's not what this book was about.
ABCs of Angelfishes.......2000-06-19
The book is very easy to read. It's written as Dr. Axelrod's own experience in keeping Angelfishes. You'll learn more about Angelfishes while you read the book. The book provides generous pictures of Angelfishes' strains. Quite a complete brief on Angelfishes. Covers diseases and breeding too.
Customer Reviews:
Superb........2006-02-27
This book is a delight. Though not huge at 7"x10" the production values are outstanding, with glorious photographs and informative text. The book covers the entire world, with maps detailing range for each species along with depth range, diagnostic markings, habits etc. One welcome feature is that similar looking species are grouped together -- closely related species appear on opposite pages -- so differences can be easily spotted. A star rating indicates the suitablility for aquariums. This book would be welcomed by any keen diver, snorkeller or aquarist and is great value at this price.
Book Description
With a focus on recreating natural habitats and providing the ideal environment for successful keeping, this book contains troubleshooting advice and remain useful long after the aquarium is set up, so readers will enjoy them for years to come.
Customer Reviews:
Good book for cichlid beginners.......2005-04-12
The book itself is recommended for people who are stepping into the world of cichlids. If you're deciding wether or not you'd like to keep cichlids or deciding on which cichlid species to keep this is the book for you. It covers most basics of cichlid keeping, describes differences between different sorts of these fish. Everything is backed up with great pictures. The book will sure make a lot of influence to your decision on which cichlids to choose. Some most common speciers are described in more detail.
Overall, you'll find basic information on all aspects of cichlid keeping (tank setup, equipment, feeding, breeding, illnesses etc.). However, if you're making your first aquarium, I personally recommend that you buy some beginner guidebook on setting up aquariums. Also, once you choose the kind of cichlids to keep, you'll probably want to buy another book which describes the chosen species in more detail.
This book would be a waste of money for professionals.
Four stars are given because I think that some topics could have been covered in some more detail.
Amazing Book.......2004-02-08
This book has so much information than any other book I have read. It contains a brief history of the cichlids and where they can be found. This book also tells you how to set up your cichlid aquarium and tips for maintaining your aquarium.

These are Simply the best Fish-keeping Books.......2007-01-23
January 23, 2007
Aqualog My Guppy
Unbeatable Fish-keeping Books
All of the Aqualog books are excellent value, although they are not particularly cheap. They are full to the brim with first class colour photographs and to reproduce these in a book is an expensive process. Whether they are about the beautiful Guppies, new strains of which are coming into the aquarist trade or in this case arguably the most beautiful freshwater tropical fish species, they are the most comprehensive identification books you can buy. They never become dated because as new fish become available to the aquarist trade the books are updated. There is plenty of literature on Livebearers but none better than this.
Normally the books do not really deal with the basics of fish keeping, there are many and varied books that do that. They are in the main a fish identification encyclopaedia. But for those aquarists who are particularly interested in a single species or group of fish they are indispensable.

Book Description
"Bunheads can't do anything right," Mr. Tsow told Robin.
After accidentally breaking the front window of a pet fish store, Robin commits to working off the cost of the window after ballet class-even though that means enduring insults from a grouchy old man who calls her a "half-person" because she is only half Chinese. Robin works extra hard to prove Mr. Tsow wrong and marvels over the uncharacteristically tender way he takes care of the fish, especially the beautiful angelfish. He is just like the Beast in the ballet Robin is rehearsing.
Robin is curious about what turned him into such a beast, and she and her feisty grandmother search for clues about his past. Their digging leads to a shocking story about the Cultural Revolution, and Robin learns how much Mr. Tsow has overcome just to be here, much less have a soft spot-even for fish.
Praise for previous books about Robin from this Newbery Honor-winner:

The Characters are Growing.......2007-02-17
This is the third in the Ribbons series (...Well from Robin's point of view, anyway).
You do not have to read any of the other books to understand and enjoy this story.
Other reviews do a great job explaining what the book is about.
Just know this, if you read the other "Ribbons" books, you will enjoy this book.
Robin and her Grandmother are wonderful characters and they just keep growing.
Read this book.
Angelfish.......2005-05-10
If you like to dance or you like fish or you like to figure out mysteries about people this book is for you. I read the book Angelfish, By: Laurence Yepp. It's about a girl named Robin, who just won a role in a ballet recital, when she trys to hit her friend with her dance bag accidently lets go and the bag goes flying through a store window. Afraid of being grounded and loosing the part in the ballet, she goes behind her parents back and agrees to work in the pet fish store to pay for the broken window. Unfortunately the owner turns out to be a grumpy man who calls her a half person, because she's only half chinese. yet behind Mr. tsow's beastly self, Robin sees some kindness when he cares fir his fish, especially for the beautiful Angelfish. He seems just like the beast in the ballet she is rehearsing. Curious and eager to help, Robin and her feisty Grandmother search for clues about what might have turned Mr. Tsow in to a beastly man. To their horror, they discover that he was a victim of the chinese Cultural Revolution. Can Robin help end his nightmare?
Angelfish By Tap Water.......2005-04-04
Want a great fish story without getting wet? Then you should try diving into Angelfish. Angelfish is a great story! If you're a dancer, part of the Chinese race, or if you just want a great book to read, Angelfish is the book for you! I definitely recommend this book!
Angelfish teaches a good moral to young readers. Robin, the main character, faces hard comebacks from "The Dragon Palace"'s owner, Mr. Tsow. But Robin knows that Mr. Tsow can't hate everything. Robin tries to find the real person Mr. Tsow is. Robin, after being bantered by Thomas, says, "Though I was still proud of being a dancer, I didn't want to give Mr. Tsow any ammunition for his usual insults." I recommend this book because it gives you an idea how people were hurt in the past and an idea how people may make racial comments about you. My favorite part of Angelfish is when Mr. Tsow is with the angelfish. He seems so gentle and careful. Angelfish is a great book.
Angelfish is a great story. Angelfish has characters that had feelings in the past but have been taken away from them. It shows a lot to young children/preteens. I definitely recommend this book! Read Angelfish now! It has a great plot, great climax; great everything! Angelfish is the book for you!
A Great Book By Tats.......2005-03-21
I read Angelfish for an English book project. I LOVED THE BOOK! I thought that the book would be stupid, because we had to do something about different race writers. I chose Angelfish because I judge books by their covers. I never knew that I would fall in love with a book I thought I would hate.
BUY IT!!!
Angelfish.......2003-01-05

Book Description
Angelfish is a novel, about a young woman who finds a job, um... 'performing' for the cameras and her admiring internet audience. We call her Annie. The guy she works with; Theo, is a technical and internet wizard (nerd). He thought this all up, and he runs the website - and designs all the cool camera toys that Annie uses in her shows to dazzle her fans. It sounds like great fun; and it is for awhile - but there's a very confused guy out there who manages to figure out where the supposedly safe and anonymous Annie actually lives. This is a problem. Mature content: explicit sex, rape, some violence, language.
