Very easy to read and has clear explanations and wording for puppy training.
A great way to a great dog........2006-07-29
I feel truly fortunate that this is the book I chose to give me an introduction to dog training when I got my dog. I feel like it has really steered us in the right direction for getting my dog to be happy, healthy, and excited about behaving well. We aren't done with training by any means, and I will have to train myself to continue training him, but I feel like this book was really on the right track.
The book teaches alternatives to the physical prompting that was so popular in the 70s and 80s. The two main alternatives are Reward training and Lure/Reward training. Basically, you are doing Reward Training if you just wait for the dog to do what you want him to do and then give him a treat and praise for doing it. Lure/Reward training goes a little bit faster and may be the best way to teach positions like sit, stand, and (lie) down. You hold a lure like a treat or piece of kibble in your hand, and depending on how you move it, the dog's position changes. The book also gives guidelines on physical prompting, though the guidelines are very gentle and tend to be combined with rewards and lure/reward training.
The best news is that you can start any of this training no matter how old your dog is. While a lot of behaviors and habits are learned in the puppy stages, an old dog actually can learn new tricks when properly motivated with rewards like treats, praise, attention, and toys.
Student of Andrea's.......2006-07-22
I had the chance to work with Andrea Arden when I lived in Manhattan and gotten my Yorkie Puppy. I find her methods to be right on. I had two copies of this book already that I had given to friends when they got thier puppies. I had to get another one for me! With her methods it is actually fun for you and your dog to learn. I use it as a refresher for my dog all the time. Even when my Buggy gets a little out of control, because I get a little slack, she snaps right back and can't wait to learn all over again. I have also used it to help friends that have gotten new puppies and have found reward training to be extremely successful. Also her ideas about exposing your dog to as many diffrent things as possible early on in life works like a charm. I have to say I have a fearless well behaved Yorkie who can adjust to any situation that may come up. When I got a secound dog I took him to other trainers since I no longer live in New York. I did it so I could socailize the new pup but what ended up happening was I was asked how certain things were to be done and if I was interested in coming to work for them! This book is simple to follow and easy to do, and I can garentee you will have as much fun as your dog!
Product Description
This user-friendly and engaging book describes a six-week program to get people and dogs off on the right paw. Inside the covers are clear descriptions of humane and scientifically-based methods to teach basic exercises including sit, down, come, heel, stay and no jumping up. As importantly, the book emphasizes how to make training fun for those at both ends of the leash, and how to ensure reliable responses while still being your dog's best friend. Also included are trouble-shooting tips for what to do when your dog hasn't read the training books and doesn't respond as expected. Equally useful as an adjunct to training classes or for people who are "home schooling", Family Friendly Dog Training will help you connect with your best friend in a way that will enrich your relationship for years to come.

Excellent general training book........2007-07-07
Patricia McConnell knows dogs. This is an excellent training guide for those who are intent on training their dogs themselves without benefit of a good class (or who can't find a decent class to attend), and it's also a great adjunct for those who are working with a trainer.
The book gives you an effective, realistic six week lesson plan and timeline, and is behaviorally solid (unlike the theories and methods of some currently trendy TV trainers).
Good weekly guide.......2007-05-12
I love Dr. McConnell's books on dog training and philosophy. Like the others, I found this one helpful to give me a sense of what training to be covering with my puppy each week!
Another fabulous book by Patricia McConnell.......2007-03-03
Here is yet another fabulous book by Patricia McConnell and Aimee Moore. I am a reward-based professional dog trainer and have been using their new book, "Family Friendly Dog Training- A Six Week Program for You and Your Dog", as a supplement to my basic training program. The chapters are arranged so each chapter covers one week of a six week program. I can never cover as much material as I want in an hour class, and this book allows me to provide a more comprehensive program to my students. It is loaded with training tips and up-to-date training methods, making it a must have for the novice dog owner's library. Every professional dog trainer should be offering this book to their students. It will add value and quality to your training program. It's an easy and fun read for the pet owner, very affordable, and not lengthy, so I find all of my students can take the time to read it. I love how Patricia and Aimee describe their own challenges and experiences making the book enjoyable and personal.
Patricia McConnell has been the most influential mentor in my career. I have learned so much through her books, videos and seminars, and have read her book "The Other End of the Leash" three times.

Good for the Beginning Gardener/Dog Owner.......2007-08-04
Dog Friendly Gardens, Garden Friendly Dogs is a great premise for a book, and if you are both new to either gardening or dog ownership, it would be a good read. The writer presents the information in a logical order and there are plenty of lists. But ultimately it reads like little more than an organized collection of common sense notes.
There are a few aha moments in this easy read but for the experienced gardener or dog owner, those golden tidbits are few and far between. I'm glad I picked up this book, but it did not bowl me over with its imagery, imagination, or concepts.
It is an easy read, the graphics and photos are limited in quantity and quality, but overall it lacks the substance I was hoping for. The writer live in the North West and the content dedicates much of is perspective to this climate zone and type of landscape.

ho-hum.......2007-07-03
Makes me want to write a book on this topic myself.
There are few "tips" in this book, so if you're looking for them here, don't bother. It's mostly stuff like "want a patio? Dogs like patios, here's a general idea of how to build one." Pretty stale.
The photos and landscaping ideas are also too geographically specific -- they'll only work in places that get a lot of rainfall or moisture. I live in the desert and so found most of that part pretty useless.
There's better information online if you simply Google "pet friendly landscaping."
Garden book for dog lovers.......2007-05-21
Okay. Not as much information specific to creating a nice doggy retreat. Lots of general garden information though.
Garden Friendly Dogs.......2007-05-07
Book had some good ideas. However, if your yard is already established the ideas they came up with wouldn't work (at least in our yard). If you are putting a yard in, then you might consider some of their ideas. What I found most helpful was the plant section as to what plants are harmful to your pets.Dog Friendly Gardens, Garden Friendly Dogs

Cheryl S. Smith's Dog Friendly Gardens, Garden Friendly Dogs is one of the few discussions of garden design which incorporates a pet's needs and habits. Gardeners and pet owners alike will relish the approach, which tells how to blend traditional garden tasks and designs with a dog's needs. From plants which work well with dogs to creative use of directed digging and growing fruits and veggies for the family pet as well as the family, Dog Friendly Gardens/Garden Friendly Dogs is packed with ideas.

Great!.......2007-10-11
Great book to read. Provides very good techniques that anyone can use and are not violent/aggressive. Some tips are obvious, but good to read and refresh your mind on how to read and react to your animals behavior.
Excellent Resource.......2007-09-09
This book gives excellent, clear instruction on how to prepare your fur-kids for the new baby. I didn't get it until my 3rd trimester, but it's still working tremendously well. I highly recommend it!
Easy, Fast Reading; Helpful Information.......2007-07-30
This book is very easy to read and follow along with the train of thought. Guidelines are basic for getting your dog used to the idea of a new baby. I think it needs to be a good start for dog owners and not the only book on the subject that they consult and I should agree that consulting a professional should always happen first and continue if a problem behavior is noted or the dog owners are especially nervous about dealing with dog and baby.
And Baby Makes Four is a "must-have" for any dog owners who plan on becoming parents........2007-06-10
Written by dog behavior specialist Penny-Scott Fox, And Baby Makes Four: A Trimester-by-Trimester Guide to a Baby-Friendly Dog is a practical, easy-to-use guide to dog training written especially for expectant parents. The first trimester covers a health check and status reduction program; after ensuring that one's dog is healthy, one must acclimate the dog to accepting a lower rank in the family and not getting its own way - not sleeping in the human bedroom, not feeding the dog before anyone else in the house, teaching him to respond to commands always, and not just when he feels like it, etc. The second trimester involves professional training if needed, teaching the dog not to destroy or bury baby toys, desensitizing the dog to baby sounds, and modifying problem behavior, particularly aggression, jumping up, or fear of strangers. The third trimester involves acclimating the dog to baby smells, leash training, and jumbling the dog's routine so that it doesn't expect or demand to be fed/walked/etc. on a precisely specific schedule (a schedule that the coming of a new baby will be likely to sporadically mix up). Written in plain terms, with professional techniques spelled out in easy-to-follow steps, And Baby Makes Four is a "must-have" for any dog owners who plan on becoming parents.

Essential for anyone who lives with a dog........2005-11-17
This is one of the best dog-training books I've read. I've had my Border Collie for 2 1/2 years and I've read several books, online articles, and even spoke with two different dog behaviorists and still managed to learn several things from Ms. Hodgson's book.
Scold the cookies, not the dog - what a great idea. Your dog gets the idea that the cookies are a bad thing & he should just leave them alone lest he be associated with them. He doesn't want you to think HE is bad, too!
Love it.
Thank you, Ms. Hodgson - I'm happy to recommend your book to everyone I know who needs some advice on living with their canine companions.
THE Best Dog Training Book!.......2005-01-15
I bought this book years ago, back in 1995, in it's first edition. Back then, I had a Siberian Husky who was more than difficult to train. I read the book and followed Sarah's advice on how to train my hard-headed and over-active pupil. It worked! Not only did it work, but it worked very well! The techniques in this book only took about 15-30 minutes of my time each day.
In the end, I was able to effectively train my dog, especially house train, in no time! I borrowed out the book and I never saw it again! I was overjoyed to see Sarah has released a second edition. I am getting a new puppy next month, and this is my book. I even found the first edition and bought that one as well! Thanks Sarah.
WOW WOW WOW WOW.......2004-12-11
WOW WOW WOW WOW. This Is an incredible book, extremly useful, and funny. It really explains the dog's point of view, and how silly people can look sometimes.-don't take that personbally. If you have a dog or you are a dog trainer this book is a must!
Every dog should come with this book........2004-02-25
Years ago when I worked in the grooming department of a pet store, we sold cases of the first edition of this book to customers who would ask us why their dogs "misbehaved." I thought that book was the best book ever written for dog owners. The second edition is much better.
The author speaks simply and with the compassion and knowledge that comes from her years of experience with dogs and their people. This book enables people to communicate effectively with the dogs in the household, so there is mutual understanding, and "training" becomes second nature.
It is useful, informative, easily referenced, and very readable. Even if you think you know dogs, you will learn from this book, and enjoy the reading. It is not overwhelming for beginners, either.
If you have a dog, buy this book, and then be prepared to have to buy 4 more copies because you keep "lending" it to friends and family.
Great book for training your dog.......2000-08-06
This book seems to be an excellent book for training your dog -- big or small. The author takes you from trying to understand your dog, to simple things you should need to train your dog, the first basic commands, moving on to harder things. At the end the author also outlines a variety of items to discipline your dog if your dog has problems of barking, chewing etc.
Not only is the book detailed, but set up in a way that you can easily read. Lists are very helpful in this book. The book also has interesting antecdotes about the author's experience with dogs which are separated out so that people who don't want to read them don't have to read them.
The content is good to help because it doesn't limit your options to one way of correcting your dog, but gives other ideas for those of us who are only a little creative. The book even talks about what games are good to play and has given me a few ideas for games for me and my dog.
My only problem with the book is the plug for a specially designed leash that the author sells. It does sound like a good leash for a dog that is kept inside most of the time. My dog is mostly outside and so the training with the special leash doesn't look that practical to me.
I think the best part of the book is the constant encouragement to the dog owners. The author tells us that training a dog depends on our attitude and does everything possible to keep our attitude to be helpful for training our dogs. One of the better dog-training books I have found.

PuppyPerfect.......2007-03-11
What a great book. Loads of information on choosing a puppy and what to do with it after. Loads of good training information. I recommend this book for anyone who is considering a puppy or have a new puppy in the home
Just what I needed........2006-12-23
As a total novice in the dog owning/training department I read every dog book I could get my hands on before our puppy came home. A lot of those books were good, but focused on house/obedience training an older puppy (4+ months). We were getting our puppy at 7 weeks and I just wasn't sure what I should be doing at this early stage. This book walks you through all of your puppy's ages starting at 8 weeks and gives you weekly projects to start working on, which I found most helpful. I now know what I can reasonably expect of such a young pup and feel that while my puppy won't learn it all right away at least I'm not sending us down the wrong path from the very beginning. I felt comfortable with the author's teaching style (calm, fun, easy-going, but authoritive) and relieved to know that it's ok to get down on the floor and roll around with your new puppy without losing your puppy's respect as her leader (as some books implied would happen). I would definitely recommend this book to anyone getting a new puppy.
Applause from "The Dog Bible" Lady.......2006-05-09
I thought I had it all in "The Dog Bible" but this is now THE PUPPY BOOK I am going to be recommending. There are methods and ideas here that are uniquely Sarah Hodgson's and she has such a logical, kind and fun way of helping you to train your pup that you will look forward to having an active part in raising a civilized dog! This is a great gift for those friends who are first time puppy owners...you'll be doing them AND yourself a favor (their puppies won't make your life miserable!)
