Book Description
"Profoundly sad and hopeful at the same time . . . Hachiko Waits shows us the very best in life; loyalty, devotion, our ability to love-all taught by a beloved, intelligent, and heroic dog. I love it." -Patricia MacLachlan, Newbery Award-winning author of Sarah Plain and TallThe loyalty and devotion of a dog has no bounds What a good dog you are. What a fine dog you are. Hachi, you are the best dog in all of Japan." Professor Ueno speaks these words to his faithful dog before boarding the train to work every morning. And every afternoon just before three o'clock, Hachi is at the train station to greet his beloved master. One day, the train arrives at the station without the professor. Hachi waits. For ten years Hachi waits for his master to return. Not even Yasuo, the young boy who takes care of Hachi, can persuade him to leave his post. Hachiko Waits is a novel inspired by a true story. Readers will be touched by the story of Hachiko and his impact on the people of Japan.

Excellent book...highly recommend. My youngest son and I enjoyed reading this book together.
Hachiko Waits .......2007-04-27
Have you ever seen a dog at train station that waits for his master everyday? The plot in the story is when an Akita named Hachiko waits for his master at the train station, but he never "shows up". His master had a stroke and died. Hachiko finds a new home, but when they open the door to go to school Hachiko runs away to the train stations to wit for his master. People try to take him home, but Hachiko keeps running away. Everyone at the train station leaves him there to take care of Hachiko. The genre is this book is realistic fiction.
This book was exciting to me because it was a book about dogs and any dog who waits for his master is the greatest dog in the world. I would recommend this book to people who like dog books. There are many books to find, but you have to choose the right one. A teen or younger might like this book. Yes this book was a page-turner because it was exciting to see what would happen to Hachika. I enjoyed this book because it was about dogs.
The story made me like the genre because you never knew what was going to happen. I think people who like dogs or animals should read this book, because it almost like telling someone telling a story about there pet.

I Couldn't Put the Book Down - Reviewed by Lyndsai.......2007-04-20
Waiting, waiting, waiting. This dog sure can wait. Hachiko Waits by Leslea Newman is a heart-warming story. It is a fantastic historical fiction book.
Hachiko is owned by Professor Ueno. They live in a little house in Japan. Hachiko is a golden-brown Akita-ken. Professor Ueno has a thin moustache and is a little short. He teaches at a university.
When the story begins, Professor Ueno and Hachiko go to the train station a couple of times so the professor can go to work. Then something happens to the professor and then Hachiko ends up waiting for days.
This book is an easy read. I liked Hachiko Waits because it has great details and I liked where it took place. You should read this book because it has great detail and it really holds your interest. That is why you should read Hachiko Waits.
Touches Your Heart.......2007-02-12
I have recommended this book to several of my students after being introduced to it at a reading conference. It is a great book that warms your heart at the extremely loyalty a dog has for his owner. The book also will open the door to another culture. I loved it and many of my students have enjoyed it immensely as well.

Book of the Akita.......2000-10-12
This book is a must for both the potential and actual owners of the Akita. Joan McDonald Brearley has given the reader an enormous amount of information most valuble to the understanding of the breed. From puppyhood to adulthood one can see the progression of a small "teddybear" face puppy to the most regal of all canine faces. Changes not only to the physical aspects but to the mental attitude of the adult dog. This is disgussed thru out the book. She also has supplied the reader a much larger than normal amount of photographs of high quality. This in my mind, is most valuable if one is to compare for breeding stocks, types from other countries, and or just for the pleasure of viewing such beautiful animals. After ten years of owning this book I still am unable to refrain from looking at it if not for the written information or maybe the photographs alone. The author has provided a wonderful service to both the Akita breed and their owners/admires by sharing her knowledge with us.

This book is only good if you are interested in breeding the Akita not as a pet.
Great reference for new Akita owners.......2006-08-16
This book was a great read and we now have been using it as a reference. This was not our first Akita, but after reading this book, I now understand our beloved pet from the past. Our new addition is just as wonderful! The Akita is a great breed.
The best book for the new Akita Owner and Exhibitor.......2000-10-11
I have many Akita books in my reference library but truely wish I had this book when I first became involved in showing and raising Akitas. This book has wonderfully discript photos and dialogue to take you through the proper grooming and stacking of your dog for show. It's not a big book but it is chalk full of the best advice and information I've seen to date. It is easy to follow and to read; clear photos and desciptions for discribing breed faults and correct breed type - a must for new Akita puppy owners. I recommend this book to all my puppy clients.
Book Description
At last, a book about your pet that emphasizes total care, training and companionship! You'll not only learn about the species-specific traits of your special pet, you'll also learn what the world's like from your pet's perspective; how to feed, groom and keep your pet healthy; and how to enjoy your pet through training and activities you can do together. The Akita is written by a breed expert and includes a special chapter on training by Dr. Ian Dunbar, internationally renowned animal behaviorist, and chapters on getting active with your dog by longtime Dog Fancy magazine columnist Bardi McLennan. Best of all, the book is filled with info-packed sidebars and fun facts to make caring for your pet easy and enjoyable.

Good, but not Great book on Akitas.......2006-03-16
As an individual considering the purchase of an akita, I was hoping to find a book that would offer me an indepth look at the breed characteristics, and specific items which would help me better determine if the breed is for me. While the book offers a nice introduction to the Akita breed, it offers no real insight into specifics that could help in my decision. The second half of the book is a generel overview of raising a puppy and training dogs. A great overview, but not what I was expecting.
When an author becomes an authority..........2003-12-01
Our Akita is now 8 years old and has developed, magnificently. This is in no small part due to reading Barbara's book in preparation. As wonderful as the Akita is, this breed best requires the owner some self-education before purchase. This book helps one getting it right from the start (which is imperative).
Very disappointing - there are better books on Akitas..........2001-05-15
especially if you want a book that is devoted entirely to the Akita!! Half of this book is about dogs in general. The information is good, just not what I expected from a book entitled "The Akita: An Owner's Guide..." The real title of this book is what you find between the parentheses.
Bull Terriers.......2000-02-07
Bull Terriers are my favorite dogs and suff like that. Im getting that dog next week on a saturday. I hope everyone of u people gets a dog tooÜ
Very good book!.......1999-04-26
This is an excellent reference book for people who are looking to buy an Akita, or the first time owner. The pictures were beautiful, and the text was straight forward and did not try to hide the goods or the bads about owning an Akita. I would recommend this to anyone interested in the breed.
Book Description
The sturdy Akita, a much favored breed in his native Japan, is a loyal and affectionate family dog that thrives on companionship with humans. This book is a brand-new title in Barron's extensive line of Complete Pet Owner's Manuals. They advise current and soon-to-be pet owners on the care of dogs and cats of virtually all recognized breeds, as well as on birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, small mammals, and even exotic creatures like tarantulas and sugar gliders. The information in each book is authoritative but the language is non-technical and easy for every pet owner to understand. Every title in this series is individually written from first page to last by a breeder, trainer, veterinarian, or other animal specialist. All Complete Pet Owner's Manuals are filled with high-quality color photos and instructive line art.
Customer Reviews:
Good overview of the Akita, "Complete" is misleading........2004-11-23
The book provides quality information, just keep in mind it is pretty much a general overview of many topics. It does not go in depth on any one topic (i.e. training, nutrition, history). For someone who doesn't know anything about dogs, particularly Akitas, this would be good. I found a lot of the information general dog knowledge.
Training tips.......2003-10-10
I have purchased this book after adopting an Akita.
The book states not to adopt an older Akita like I did.
I do not agree. I have a great 2yr old Akita that I adopted from my local animal shelter.
This book does have some great information until it comes to training.I would suggest a different book if training is what your looking for.
Short, but filled with information........2001-11-25
I have bought several books about Akita's from Amazon.
This book was filled with information and was written in a easy
to read format. I own seven Akita's and have raised two litters.
Anyone thinking of purchasing an Akita for the first time should
read this book.

Great!.......2003-09-17
I have been researching akitas for over 2yrs prior to aquiring one. This book contains as much information as at least 3 of the other books recommended by searching this site. It is like 3 books in one. B.J. Andrews really knows her stuff and she makes you feel as if you're talking to a breeder as you read.
Helpless Book !!.......2003-06-23
If you're thinking about getting an Akita as a pet and need to really learn about the dog-DON'T GET THIS BOOK !!Plenty of info about the origin of the dog,but I need to know if he's the right dog for me. I need more info on tmperment and specific health concerns. This book is mostly a general dog book with some Akita info-now I have to get another book !!!
The World of the Akita.......2002-01-22
The original book written by Barbara Andrews is expensive in the hardcover edition. But, I am so thankful that I sacrificed and purchased it when I saw a copy in Petsmart. It has gone out of print, just when the Akita is hitting stride as a household pet that can be maintained by the average pet lover. Ms. Andrews put her heart and soul in the first book and it shows. The second book is not as far reaching in the kinds of information revealed in the original. I have had three Akitas and the original "The World of the Akita" has been the saving grace. I will probably always own an Akita, for as long as I can take care of a big pet. And, this book will be a cherished part of my library. I loaned it out once, never again! If you are an Akita owner or plan to be, I seriously suggest acquiring a copy of the original book. If you can't, get the new version, it's better than nothing.

Book Description
For over a thousand years the sword has played a crucial role in Japanese society. Even today it remains a ubiquitous and venerated object, whether cherished as a work of art, admired as a feat of technology, or wielded in one of the many schools of fencing that have survived Japan's feudal era. This book not only explains the techniques of that era's most prominent school, it also gives the reader a fascinating insight in the history and martial ethics that underpin the modern day practice of Japanese fencing, an art known to the Japanese as Iaido.
Customer Reviews:
history, yes. teaching, a little, practice a little less.......2007-09-23
Not a bad book for someone experienced in Iai, definitely a dry read. The photos and descriptions of technique are somewhat vague and generally un-helpful unless you've seen it in real life before. If I had picked it up in a bookstore I'd flip through it and then put it back. It is still a good, well written book and a good addition to the library of the sword enthusiast just don't expect to beat any samurai after reading it.
As a former student............2007-08-13
As a former student of Akita Moriji sensei, I am very much obliged to give this book 5 stars. The book is actually 2 parts- the original (translated) kata section and a well-researched history section. Akita sensei wrote the kata section which includes pictures of him doing the kata and an explanation (albeit basic) of the moves. I believe he published his book as a way to explain the kata to other sensei in Japan who are not familiar with Shinkageryuu, so the descriptions are written for experienced iaidoka- NOT beginners. The book is meant to merely be a guide to remember and explain, not to thoroughly teach the kata. One more point to remember is that Akita sensei's Shinkageryuu is somewhat different from the Yagyuu family Shinkageryuu which is more comon. The history section is great for anyone interested in iaido, though.
Akita sensei has now handed over teaching to his son, but another sensei, Akita sensei's protégé Matsuoka sensei, has also become very well-known for this style. I sincerely hope people in and outside of Japan with embrace this and other non-MSR and MJER styles to continue the traditions. Reading this book, as well as others on lesser-known styles, is essential for experienced practitioners.
Not for beginners........2004-05-27
Interesting book on the Yagyu Shinkage-Ryu style of Iaido. This style claims to be "Koryu", or traditional school. Not for beginners, because only shows you what`s done, but no how`s done.
If you are an Iaido student from any other style this book is a refreshing look at a different style. The differences in this style are many, from the initial draw,"Niki-Tsuke", which in this style is more a two handed deflection of your enemy`s weapon,(Sword,Spear,Tanto etc.),to the imaginary blood cleaning of your sword, "Chiburi or Chiburui", which in this style comes from elevating your sword to a high position,"jodan no kamae" and cutting down in front of your knee, while kneeling. The book does not explain that this is done, with a reversed grip of your left hand. The noto or sheating of your sword is explained in the text, but is not shown in the photographs, which I believe was omited on purpose. I only give 4 stars to this otherwise excelent book, because there`s a lot that is not expalin or show. For someone who is just begining Iaido I recommend "Iaido Sword:kamimoto-Ha techniques of Muso Shinden Ryu" by Richard W. Babin. ISBN 1581603770. Is another style and the book is not a "how to" book, but at least explains many things and most important if you are a beginner, gives you many safety tips, and advise on swords, etc.
Book Description
Recognized as a "Natural Monument" in Japan and hailed in America and England as a dignified and courageous guard dog and companion, the Akita has fascinate man for thousands of years. The largest of the Japanese spitz breeds, the Akita is a strong-minded, strong-bodied canine with a naturally dominate air and an aloofness that is all his own. For the right owner and family, the Akita offers rewards beyond expectations, as he enlightens, entertains and protects the humans he so devotedly adores.
Written by the top two Akita experts in the Western world, Barbara "BJ" Andrews of the O'BJ kennels in North Carolina and Meg Purnell-Carpenter of the Overhill Kennels in Bristol, England, this book offers Akita owners decades of experience in the breed that cannot be matched. Both Mrs. Andrews and Mrs. Carpenter have bred, raised and shown champions and are counted among the most respected professionals in the international dog fancy.
This book provides fascinating information about the breed's origins in Japan, its importation to the US and UK, the breed's character and standard, as well as puppy selection, feeding, obedience training and housebreaking and health care. In addition to an authoritative, comprehensive text, this book presents over 135 photographs in full color, which prove to be as informative as they are attractive.

Good book tells u alot about the breed is well written i give it 5 stars
Akita (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series) (Hardcover) .......2006-07-29
Save your money and look for a new resource. All this proves is that anyone that can't write can get published. If Ms. Andrews had a true love of the Breed, she would not flitter about from breed to breed.
A Good Buy.......2006-05-09
I bought this book because I wanted to learn more about the Akita- and this book was perfect for that. It's very informative, and I learned a lot more about the breed- stuff that I had never heard before, like how there's more than 1 'type' of Akita. This book was also appropriatley discouraging for people who are interested in the breed but are probably not well suited for it.
This book is a good buy if you're interested in an introduction to the Akita because it offers you training, feeding, breeder and showing tips, as well as a very thorough history of the breed.
Book Description
The first in-depth treatment of all the breeds of Japanese dog.
Finally, the first book to treat not just the Akita or the shiba but all breeds of Japanese dogs.
Japanese Dogs introduces the ten main breeds?the Akita, Shiba, Kishu, Shikoku, Kai, Hokkaido, Japanese Spitz, Japanese Terrier, Chin, and Tosa Fighting Dog. It shows each of these ten dogs in stunning color photographs and describes in detail each dog's distinctive physical characteristics,
temperament, and behavior.
The book traces the history of the largest organization in Japan for preserving and protecting the breeds?known as Nippo?as well as the Nippo Standard for the Japanese Dog and the way that judging is conducted at Nippo shows. It traces the history of the dog in Japan, including the two times in the
twentieth century when?due first to war and then a distemper epidemic?all the breeds were in imminent danger of extinction, and how they were brought back to their current numbers and level of popularity.
Japanese Dogs outlines the dogs' traditional use?still sometimes seen in the countryside?as partners in hunting wild animals such as boar and bear. It describes the close bond that was essential between hunter and hunting dog, and the way that this capacity for bonding has been bred into the dogs
for generations, so that today too, as pets, they tend to be boundlessly loyal.
The book includes stories about well-known dogs like Hachiko, the Akita who waited outside a Tokyo train station every evening for his master's return for nearly ten years after the master had passed away, until the dog's own death; Hachiko is commemorated in a statue that stands outside that same
station. Or Tama, the Shiba that saved her owner?a hunter in snowy, mountainous country?from being buried in snow not just once, but three times.
The book also describes an unusual breed, the Jomon Shiba?a contemporary dog that has been bred, on the basis of fossil remains, to resemble as closely as possible a long-extinct breed from Paleolithic times. Much more wolflike and regal-looking than the wildly popular Shiba, this dog has also
gained many devoted fanciers, although it is completely unknown to most Japanese people.
In addition to thirty-two pages of color photos, Japanese Dogs is illustrated throughout with numerous black-and-white photos of other, lesser known breeds, scenes from dog shows, archaeological finds, and ukiyoe and other paintings Japanese Dogs is sure to be of interest to enthusiasts of any of
the Japanese breeds, and to admirers of dogs everywhere.
- Heavily Illustrated Throughout
- 32 Pages of Color Photos
- A Wealth of Information on Japan's 10 Fascinating Dog Breeds
Customer Reviews:
Thorough, objective.......2006-09-13
I like this book. It's thorough, objective and it doesn't glorify or over-emphasize the positives and negatives of the Japanese breeds. It offers an indepth history about the breeds, while not presenting speculation as fact. The photos are good eye-candy too. I really enjoyed seeing and reading about the Japanese standard. I would highly recommend this book to anyone collecting books about any of the Japanese breeds.
Shibas roxxor!.......2005-08-22
The pictures in this book are awesome, and the detailed histories of the Japanese breeds are great. My only complaint is that the Akitas appear rather scruffy in some of the pictures but otherwise, this book is a must have for anyone interested in the Japanese breeds.
A very good appetizer of a book but..........2004-02-01
A good, well written, well translated overview of the various Japanese breeds, including the popular Shiba and Akita. The photos are gorgeous and I wish there were more. If I had one complaint about this book, it's that it left me wanting to read, and look at, more, so hence the not-quite-top rating. Also, this book presents the profoundly moving story of the legendary Hachiko and a few other tales of amazing dogs.
Great History and stories.......2003-09-08
This book does what the title says - describe Japanese dogs in good pictures and summaries. I've only owned a Shiba but I agree with EVERYTHING the author wrote about them. I also liked the tid-bits on dogs in the Asian region because I've run into a few Korean Jindo dogs. Her stories at the end were great to emphasize the 'personalities' of each breed.

Orphen rules ;).......2006-05-26
...but you know that or why else would you be looking at this book? I just got my copy today and just finished reading it. It has the same art work as the other four books. It's mostly about Orphen in this one.
The back:
"Love will tear him apart again
There's magic in the air when Orphen is reunited with Leticia, a beautiful and gifted sorceress from his past. But hot on her tail come enemies aplenty, and Orphen will have to stay on his toes to deal with fiendish assassins and mysterious sorcerers alike. As if that weren't enough, yet another opponent lurks in the shadows-an old and familiar foe waiting for the right moment to strike..."
Ok, so what up with the young Orphen clone? Just have to read the NEXT book for that one ^-^
