5 out of 5 stars Great Training Advice.......2007-09-06

I found the book to be an easy-to-read brochure that gets right to the point with clear, concise suggestions for training your dog.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!.......2007-08-31

Don't let the size of this book turn you away - this book has all the information you need to greatly improve your relationship with your dog. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has a difficult dog, but people with obedient dogs can benefit as well.

This book was well written, short and to the point. I followed her advice and now my dogs listen to me and I no longer yell or pull on the leash!

5 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone with a dog.......2007-07-09

This book saved my relationship with my two "kids" - it is written in language that is very easy to understand and presents principles in a way that anyone can appreciate and practice. I believe that reading this book taught me how to live with and relate to my four legged family in a way that truly allows us to live together in a harmony that we had not known previously and cherish every day since. Highly recommended for anyone who has a canine companion, whether it is a new relationship or one that has gone on for a while but has become a strain for any member of the family.

5 out of 5 stars Get Double Pleasure from this book!.......2007-06-13

I enjoyed this practical little booklet, but it is twice as useful and entertaining if you read it aloud and substitute the word "man" [or a man's name] for the word "dog" [or a dog's name]. I gave it to my sister when she adopted one of my foster dogs, and we had a jolly and educational time reading it "both ways". Anything by Patricia McConnell is a "must-read" for those of us who love interaction with our dogs!

Book Description

Bestselling author Cesar Millan takes his principles of dog psychology a step further, showing you how to develop the calm-assertive energy of a successful pack leader and use it to improve your dog’s life–and your own.

Filled with practical tips and techniques as well as real-life success stories from his clients (including the Grogan family, owners of Marley from Marley & Me) and his popular television show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan, Cesar helps you understand and read your dog’s energy as well as your own so that you can move beyond just correcting behavioral issues and take your connection with your dog to the next level.

The principles of calm-assertive energy will help you become a better pack leader in every area of your life, improving your relationships with friends, family, and coworkers.

In addition, Cesar addresses several important issues for the first time, including what you need to know about the major dog behavior tools available and the difference between “personality” and “instability.”

Ultimately, what emerges from Be the Pack Leader are both happier dogs and happier, more centered owners.

5 out of 5 stars Another success for Cesar and more wisdom for the rest of us........2007-10-04

Cesar Millan and Melissa Jo Peltier have done it again. In Be the Pack Leader: Use Cesar's Way to Transform Your Dog...and Your Life, the dog whisperer and the writer have put their talents together once more to provide dog lovers and owners with a valuable resource. This resource helps us build and maintain a harmonious relationship with a balanced animal and, perhaps, even with each other. In that vein, Cesar speaks to four aspects of human nature that need to be in balance: intellect, emotion, spirituality, and instinct, and how we have lost touch with number four. Developing a balanced relationship with our dog(s) helps us to regain the instinctual side of ourselves buried so deeply within.

In his acknowledgements, Cesar also speaks to the ability of women to impart a calm-assertive influence on the world's inhabitants. That was nice to read. In his introduction, Cesar states that he has continued to learn from dogs and people and has taken to heart the criticisms of his first book. As a result, this book includes easily remembered practical tips for working with dogs and a step-by-step reference (at the end) for specific situations, in addition to more of Cesar's innate wisdom when it comes to dogs and their behavior. (I especially liked the Rudyard Kipling quote near the beginning of the book. Be sure to read it.)

Part I deals with balancing our dogs and Part II deals with balancing ourselves. Cesar presents case studies of the relationship between various dogs and their humans, including that of the Grogan family (bestseller: Marley and Me). Then there's the Tycoon and his seriously out-of-balance dogs, Willy and Kid; and Bob Kettle, a pro who helps domesticated dogs get back in touch with their natural instincts when it comes to snakes...in other words, to stay away from them; and the book's author, Melissa Jo Peltier, makes an appearance as an example of how one's nervous energy can set dogs into a frenzy. As a skilled writer, she was able to describe, in her own words, how she experienced the situation in which she found herself.

There is much to be learned from Cesar's books and his television show, The Dog Whisperer. Those who have been lucky enough to see him in person have an additional dimension in which to experience and appreciate his talents. In the two years I've known of him, several friends and family members have put his methods to work with great success. He has become one of my heroes.

5 out of 5 stars Pack Leader ~ the next level fod dogs and humans!.......2007-10-02

Chapter 7 in this book, relates the story of how just the first few lessons were enough to help me rescue a "red-zone dog" trapped in a traffic signal maintenance yard that terrified about 75 men to the point that they had called animal control to come put the dog down.

Risk management, safety and environmental health, have all been my career for 30 years. I knew there was nothing to risk by trying this new fellow's approach to problem dogs, (except being exposed to the 105-degree Arizona heat mid afternoon). I had tried Cesar's way ~sorta, off and on without much success - on my old dogs that I had humanized for 10 years, the way I had been raised to be with my dogs since childhood. With this rescue, if I didn't succeed, it wasn't a matter of him barking too long or getting my food, it would cost him his life.

Cesar's way turned him in days to one of the best dogs I ever had in my life. I had turned to a yahoo email list for help. When the owner needed to leave, I volunteered to take it over. This began the best adventure, in my life of wonderful adventures of opening doors to have thousands - yes thousands of people helped and helping each other to walk Cesar's way (Over 65,000 messages in just two years - open archives for anyone to review, current membership at 2300 with over 1000 more who came in, solved their problems and left) . People who had exhausted local sources for help or support began reaching out to each other through that email list

The original book "Cesar's Way", talks about the mechanics and philosophy of how Cesar's way can successfully used people under a complete variety of environments and life challenges.

This new book, "Be the Pack Leader - shows the underlying foundation of the WHY that Cesar's way can work from the first moments on.

Because dogs do NOT lie,
because they show us the truth of what is going on under the masks that humans put on for other humans so much from childhood, that we forget the mask is there,
Through this book's principles, we can learn how to learn from what our dog show us that we are really doing in our relationships, and then apply that understanding when we engage with others.

All relationships are about power - our family, friends, co-workers, clients. We will either learn to work WITH power, or we will be at the effect of power throughout our lives! "Be the Pack Leader", to can be find the holes, gaps and Achilles heels in our dog/human relationships. Those lessons can then be used to change our human/human relationships to be more fulfilling.

With self-knowledge comes power. Chapter 8 talks about "Our Four-legged Healers. Many hearts and souls are finding healing because of the work Cesar is doing.
Thousands of dogs are being saved that otherwise would be abandoned or euthanized as being hopeless. How can anyone turn their back on this kind of information and say that it is bad?

If anyone wants to hear what happened as "the rest of the story", to Chapter 7 and the quantum leap it provided for me, find the yahoo Dog Whisperer Fan email list (third largest in obedience and training section) and check the archives under my yahoo name, siegeanderson, or yahoo me and I will tell you which post it is!

I am also creating a video review of the successes of Cesar way in my life so far that I have experienced, which should be uploaded here within a day of this review.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for dog owners.......2007-10-11

I thought I had the best dog in the world until we got another little puppy. Then, my dog became very territorial with his toys. Wanting the two dogs to love each other forever, I got this book because it was recommended by the local German Shepherd rescue.
Most of the things in the book I had already done with my first dog, but the writers explained why my dog was acting this way with his toys and how to correct it.
My two dogs share toys now and don't fight (other that puppy play).
Sometimes it is hard to 'think like a dog', but you have to in order to communicate with yours. These writers must be part-dog, and the book is very effective.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book .......2007-09-03

This is an excellent book for anyone who owns a dog. It gives you good insight into the heirarchy of the dog world and helps you understand how the dog thinks and should help everyone in the training of their dog.

5 out of 5 stars Slender volume packed with information.......2006-12-22

I have had dogs my entire life. Unfortunately, I never realized how poor my understanding of dog behavior was. (I currently have 4 dogs--the introduction of an exuberant 1/2 American bull dog/beagle/lab mix has required the tutorial!).

I would recommend that every dog owner read this volume. In fact, no one should even own a dog without understanding and implementing these basic concepts. (I know that sounds didactic; however, I would humbly submit to being called on this by any who have read no books on dog behavior and who, having read this book, finds that my comment rings false.) I read Cesar Milan's book, but felt that I was only introduced to concepts with no meaningful means to engage the concepts--more autobiographical. This book not only introduced the concepts but provided specific guidance on how to implement.

This is not a book solely for problem dogs. Rather, it is a book for any person or family that wants to enjoy problem-free habitation with a dog. Providing for our dogs confident leadership, clear boundaries, safety and comfort are our responsibilities as dog owners. You will feel well-equipped to carry out these responsibilities by starting here.

4 out of 5 stars good but not great.......2006-02-01

This book is generally good and effective at explaining a good relationship between a dog and his or her owner. But, there are a few things that i have learned from my experience in numerous training classes and from working a boarding kennel that I disagree with.

4 out of 5 stars Leader of the Pack.......2005-08-02

I thought this was an excellent book. My boyfriend and I adopted a jack russell terrier. It was an older dog with some pretty severe dominance/aggression issues. This book was recommended twice to me. I think the two biggest reasons that this dog is still in our family is because of the size of our hearts and this book! We learned that our dog will always have problems, but we also learned that he can be controlled. He still slips into dominant/aggressive mode, but with the book in mind, we put him(humanely)right back into his place.

5 out of 5 stars One of the few business books that is more than an expanded magazine article.......2007-07-30

This was a thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring book, one of the few of its kind not marred by the author's huge ego, bad writing, or unfounded claims.

Because the profiled businesses are not in glamorous fields, their creativity is easy to see and quantify. I also enjoyed the way each chapter highlighted a different strategy.

It's a brilliant piece of work by an outstanding author. A must-read!

5 out of 5 stars A neat little book for entrepreneurs to read when they want to be reminded that they can always improve the way they do business.......2007-05-17

I thought this was a wonderful book. Just about any president of an LLC or CEO of a corporation should want a copy of this book. It will help them do their jobs so their companies will be successful and not get overtaken by the competition. If their company is not the leader in its market, then this book can help inspire them to make their company a leader!

There are eight companies profiled in this book:

1. PR Firm (Service)
2. Auction Service Provider (Service)
3. Bicycle Retailer (Retailer)
4. Local Supermarket Chain (Retailer)
5. Motorcycle Retailer (Retailer)
6. Ice Cream Shop Business (Manufacturer, Retailer)
7. Sport Sock Manufacturer (Manufacturer)
8. Baking Company (Manufacturer)

I thought it was very nice that the profiled businesses were not all retailers or all service companies. The mix was just right for me.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the different businesses profiled, what made the book special to me were the tip lists at the end of each chapter. And what made the tip lists especially special was the way the author not only included tips from the profiled company, but also related tips from the other profiled companies. Everything in the book was interrelated and that's the way business is, too.

I would have liked the book better if the cover had not included the following statement: Eight Strategies for Success. I don't think it is an accurate statement. I think the book really includes just one strategy that is kind of complex. And that is: do things at your business so you beat the competition and make good profits. 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars A GOLD NUGGET IN EVERY CHAPTER.......2007-04-11

Having come from a 28+ year career in corporate America as a senior exec, I found this book to be SPOT on in theory and in practice. The book is full of thought provoking concepts with practical, concise, clearly laid out action steps that every small business can use. It's findings cut across most any industry and can be adapted to most functions within larger businesses. A quick and easy read full of BIG ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Learn How To Create Fire In Your Business.......2007-03-30

It's like finding a mythical city - it's well known, but no one can tell you where it is or how to go about finding it.

This book leads the reader to that elusive success that seems to exist in large firms, but so often escapes the smaller ones. Ms. Fenn weaves tales that are as captivating as they are educational. They clearly detail what company owners have made key to their operations, why, and how they've executed it. Crafting extraordinary customer experiences, creating powerful employees, leveraging technology, mastering product innovation - all threads in a fabric of fantastic companies that separate themselves from the others in their industries.

If you aspire to unusual success in business, you won't be able to put this book down - unless it's to act on the million ideas you have as you read.

It's a real rush to see companies that have risen by capitalizing on commonsense ideals. Nothing fancy (except the technology), no MBA required. The principles are accessible by everyone regardless of background or experience. Our company actually introduced Alpha Dogs into its employee training and points to the book as a signpost to show people who we are, where we want to be, and how we plan to get there. Thanks, Ms. Fenn, for a launching a movement in our corner of the world.

5 out of 5 stars Differentiating Your Business Takes Guts.......2007-03-22

Donna's book highlights the fact that owning a business is not a perfect science. She confirms that combination of talent, discipline, knows-how, gut instincts, and risk are foundations for success. The entrepreneur's stories are fascinating, yet Donna summarizes each story with business axioms worth pondering and applying. Donna's approach to the "lessons learned" made this a book worth reading twice. The first read provides some "ah-ha's". The second read inspires note-taking. I've already given or recommended this book to clients struggling to differentiate their businesses.

5 out of 5 stars The Story of His Campaign and Life.......2002-05-21

For nearly 16 years HJ argued for lower property taxes before proposition 13 became law in 1978; it was not a quick and easy task. Those who would work for any similar change may learn something from his story. From 1942 to 1991 about 25% of the Federal Defense budget was spent in California. This created a growing economy, even if it drained funds from the northeast states.

Since 1945 land prices and property taxes were booming in California. After his 1962 retirement, HJ began his involvement with the United Organization of Taxpayers. [A movement needs a cadre of dedicated workers.] It then affiliated with other organizations, and thousands of volunteers from all over the state. [The movement must be represented in all counties.] It is very important to have unity and loyalty to the group. [Fragmentation, petty quarrels, and demoralization should be avoided.] They experienced many defeats. [Expect to lose many battles before final victory.] Proposition 13 cut property taxes in half (p.9)! This set an example for the other states (p.10). It could never have been achieved without the Initiative & Referendum law in Calif. But an organization can pass around a petition and get tens of thousands of signatures. Even if it has no legal effect it will impress and scare elected officials. Calif. passed an initiative and referendum law in 1911, an extension to the right of petition. This allows the people to write a law and bypass corrupt state politicians. Without the right to petition, Proposition 13 would not have been passed.

Chapters One thru Seven tell of the work by this movement. 64,000 tax-exempt corporations and 18,000 charitable trusts paid no property taxes. Most of them were set up to get a tax break! Towns would raise assessments one year, then the tax rate the next (p.28). The enormous increases in property taxes priced young couples out of the market. And older people had lowered incomes.

Chapter 8 is his autobiography. He was born and raised in Utah. His father was a carpenter who studied law and became a judge. HJ studied law at the University of Utah by day and worked at a mill by night. He taught boxing in college, and fought as a professional. HJ also played semipro baseball for a copper mill (p.209). He had a varied and interesting life as a newspaper publisher, and then as a manufacturer. Pages 256-7 tell of his legal experiences with the patent on radio push-button tuning; they lost out to big corporations due to high level political decisions. He was part of the group that ran an ad for a Congressional candidate - they decided on "the guy in the sailor suit" (p.263).

Chapter Nine lists his political ideas. He advocates elimination all property taxes, and using income taxes (ability to pay), sales taxes (with some exemptions), and "other forms of taxes". HJ would encourage more public participation in the public business of government. He recommends limiting the size of government to limit the power of politicians. Public schools should be overhauled to create a better product. HJ wants more personal savings to replace the Social Security system. He also wants the US to have the most powerful military in the world, but doesn't want foreign entanglements.

5 out of 5 stars A fine story about much more than just a tax revolt.......2000-04-03

In this book, Howard Jarvis tells his story. Mainly, the book deals with the victorious anti-tax movement in California in the beginning of 70's, but Mr. Jarvis also shares much more of his rich life experience with us. Among other, we'll learn how Mr. Jarvis successfully fought the trade unions' sabotage during WWII. The different subjects are in approppriate proportions and presented in a very interesting style. Even though I'm rather ignorant and uninterested of US inner politics, I found the book really fascinating.

I have just one advice to the readers of this book. The idea of forcing the hated clique of parasite politicians and civil servants on their knees might seem very attractive to you. However, I read lately that both Howard Jarvis and Paul Gann got killed under mysterious circumstances shortly after their triumph with the tax proposal. I don't know if it's true or not, but my advice would still be to avoid confronting governments openly. (Read "How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World" by Harry Browne to learn more about this subject.)

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Game Stars!.......2000-03-26

Excellent book for anyone working with young people. The games are fun, and useful. It's great for quick references and reminders of games when you are planning a session/ class. It's in an easy to read format. There are traditional games as well as lesser known games which are just as good. It's an absolute must for Youth workers and Teachers.
