Book Description
Ask someone who works with horses how best to communicate with a balky colt and she will tell you that horses do not respond to human cajoling. To be successful the human must understand and work with, not against, the horse’s instincts, needs, and fears. When a trainer resorts to human teaching methods — reasoning, begging, bribing, even hugging and kissing — the horse will become confused and unable to respond appropriately. But if horses are treated respectfully with methods they understand, everyone involved — animal and human — will be happier, safer, and more productive.
Horse trainer and instructor Cherry Hill believes that every human/horse relationship benefits from a greater human understanding of what motivates horses, how they experience the world, what makes them happy, and what worries them. Journey through the equine mind with Hill as she explores all that makes a horse tick. How do his basic needs dictate his behavior and mood? What touches and tastes appeal to his senses? How does his “flight or fight” instinct dictate his response to sudden movements?
Hill offers interactive experiments — fun for both horse and human — that bear out her findings on horse behavior. And her final chapter presents simple training methods that draw from the insights and information presented throughout the book.

Winifred's View.......2007-09-28
I have purchased many books on horses and riding, but Cherry Hill's "..Think Like a Horse" explained and reinforced so much more about what I was questioning and experiencing with my horse. It is certainly a wonderful resourse for "newbies" like myself who have discovered the wonders of horse at a late age, but I believe it also holds a lot of insights for the more experienced riders/owners who care about knowing their horses at least as well as they ride/show them. I was looking for something to explain a particular change in my horse's behavior (after eye exams, blood work etc turned up negative) and I believe I found it in Ms. Hill's book. Winnie and I thank her for sharing her knowledge and wisdom in a book packed with information.
If I were a horse.......2007-09-20
If I were a horse, I would want this author to be my "keeper." This book is written with keen insight and clearly communicated to anyone who owns a horse, rides a horse or has dreamed of galloping across a great meadow as free as the wind. I highly recommend this book along with another book that embraces horses: It's called On the Trail of the Pony Express and the book follows Cherokee author, Jerry Ellis, for 2,000 miles along the Pony Express Trail by foot, horse, covered wagon and canoe from Missouri to California.
Wonderful book!.......2007-07-15
This is a delightful book full of information and insight from an often under-appreciated trainer. Cherry Hill covers everything from development to grooming to behavior to training.
Information which is normally strewn across several horse books comes together in this single volume. This is a must-read for every horse enthusiast.

Book Description
Successful horsepeople know the secrets of the horse's mind. All horses share 10 common character traits that affect every move they make. These traits are embedded deep within the horse's DNA and are shared by every horse. Dr. Miller explains how to predict what your horse will do, get the proper response and fix unwanted behavior. He shows how you can unknowingly teach your horse how to misbehave.

Gifted mind.......2007-08-23
Dr. Miller has a wonderful gift of understanding the horse's mind, from imprinting at birth to all training phases, his understanding of the mind of the horse is deep. He has so much to offer us and our horses in all of his work.
Thought provoking collection of essays.......2006-05-21
Having heard Dr. Miller speak about imprinting a foal, I've been a big fan of his work. He's done a lot in the field of horsemanship, helping to educate horse owners. His work is aimed at the amateur horse owner, someone who might not have a background in horses, or who only has one or two in their care. With that said, do I agree with everything he says? No, I do not. However, I did find this book to be a thought provoking collection of essays.
The "ancient secrets" to which Dr. Miller refers is simply the natural way in which a horse is hardwired. Those who work around horses know that they are prey creatures. Their instincts tell them to flee from danger, and barring that, fight to get free. Therefore, many of things that owners and trainers do to them run counter to that instinct. Dr. Miller's book helps the owner and/or trainer to understand a bit more the details in a horse's mind, and understand why a horse may be performing a certain action.
From the title of this book it sounds like it might be the "be-all-end-all" to horsemanship tomes. Certainly "Understanding the Ancient Secrets of the Horse's Mind" sounds weighty and important. I'm not saying this book isn't important, but the book cannot, especially in such a slim volume, be the complete handbook to getting inside a horse's psyche. No, this is a title to read, to ponder, and to learn from, and then use as a way to branch out into other books on equine psychology.
With that said, however, I do feel that this book is a worthwhile addition to any horseman's library, and certainly should be on the "must read" list of any serious horse owner.
Better than the flashy title.......2001-02-12
I found this book to be much better than its flashy, "whisperer-trendy" title would indicate. It is a well-written, logically built collection of key "psychological" characteristics of horses. Not directly useful as a problem-solving guide, but still a must-read, because it explains quite clearly what every horse lover should deeply absorb.
Considering Ancient Secrets of the Horses Mind........2000-09-09
While this book contains valuable information, it is not by any means a thorough text on the horses mind. It contains some controversial advice. Too many stories and too much personal information for my taste. The Ancient Secrets of the Horses Mind is big on promises but falls short on delivery. Recommended as a training supplement only, not as the only book you get on training the horse.
Ancient Secrets of the Horses's Mind.......2000-06-06
This book is so good I have already sent 3 copies as gifts to friends. What more can I say. It is the best book about basic horse instints I have ever read. If one wants to understand why horses do what they do, then read this book.
Book Description
Balancing new scientific research with his practical horse-training experience, author Andrew McLean debunks long-standing myths about horses and presents a far-reaching, totally humane method of horse training. He starts by recognizing vast differences between equine and human brains and mental processes. He describes the traditional trainer's mistake of judging horses according to the standards of docile or good horse and bad-tempered or mean horse. The horse's brain cannot make abstract judgments about good or bad behavior, but readily responds to conditioning by trainers who understand the equine brain, the instincts that drive it, and a horse's way of knowing the world. The author emphasizes that by training a horse according to a set of consistent responses that coincide with equine instincts, horse owners can avoid undesirable horse behavior. He offers a training program and amplifies on it with enlightening case studies. Here is must-reading for every current and prospective horse owner and rider. More than 300 color photos.

Disapointing.......2007-05-02
Nothing new here. I was disappointed to say the least after shelling out my bucks for this book I just expected more. Certainly nothing to write home about.
Try this book instead: Equine Behaviour: Principles and Practice
A fine book that lays out an overview of McLeans training.......2006-11-11
For those of us familiar with behavioural training this book has been a long time in coming. So many times you are stuck between the traditional 'leg on, leg on, leg on' (where's the release??) training school or NH which has it's own achilles heal - continually activating the natural flight response and for most practitioners a total lack of understand of what positive reinforcement is.
For those looking for a more extensive explaination of the actual training methods he has written a second book "Horse Training The McLean Way
" however this one is meant to provide an introduction into behavioural training and then an overview of the types of exercises and horse 'problems' that they deal with. The book is well written and should be easily accessible to anyone interested even if they are not science-minded or well versed in behavioural psychology.
For all the dressage riders with horses that buck instead at tempi-changes or rear instead of piaffe - reading this could make you understand that these are your problems not the horse! and save your dressage mount (and your competition career)
This book has no equal.......2006-07-13
I have been a rider/trainer and instructor for the past 30 years. I have ridden with and trained with some of the top trainers in the world. I have read hundreds of books on the training of horses and been to dozens upon dozens of clinics with all of the "horse whisperers". After reading Andrew McLean's incredible book, I immediately went out and bought 10 copies to give to friends and trainers. I will agree with one of the reviewers that the book might be better appreciated by someone with a background in psychology and that Andrew does presume a certain knowledge level from the reader. Apart from that it is one of the most amazing books on training that I have ever come across. I began using many of Andrew's principles on our new green pony as soon as I finished the book and was simply floored by the simplicity and efficacy of the methods. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
Not bad.......2005-08-02
Maybe I expected more of this book. Its good, but it feels like Andrew McLean tried to say too much in too short of time, so he tells you a little bit about a lot but leaves you with questions.
Wonderful.......2004-12-01
A fantastic book that utilizes the authors research into animal behavior and training. His concepts were well explained and improved my understanding of horse training. I would certainly read another book from this author.

More appropriate for burning than reading.......2007-01-27
Unfortunately I found this book was not only vastly lacking in educational detail, but was appalled by one of the recommendations made by the author on catching difficult horses. I would have expected a novice lay person to come up with depriving the horse of food and water in an effort to make them "dependant" upon you for thier very life (and therefore grateful to be caught and fed), however finding it in a book obviously marketed to beginners and novice horsepersons felt this was largely irresponsible. The book is also filled with biases and general assumptions about the expected behavior of horse genders and breeds. There is also a comment that Thoroughbreds are Warmbloods... ? Just wondering when this happened? There are better books out there.
Very Basic - maybe helpful to a novice.......2002-01-08
I agree with the other reviewer here. This book barely scratches the surface on horse behavior. To me it raised more questions than it answered. Very brief and superficial discussion. I have been involved with horses for thirty years and just recently discovered the usefulness of understanding a horse's perspective in day-to-day handling and training. If you are looking for a good book on understanding why horses do what they do and what to do about it, read all three of Mark Rashid's books, available here at Amazon.
my review of understanding horse behavior.......2000-07-02
This book is very short and so is this review. I would only say that this book is good if you are a novice when it comes to horses. Anyone with experience would find this repetetive and boring. The book only covers very basic points about horses. The book also does not give details about anything- it's more of an outline. I would close by saying that this book is probably one to steer away from.
Book Description
This authoritative discussion of horses’ psychological and emotional needs will change your perception of human-horse interaction forever. Author Lesley Skipper asserts that a new perception of horses as thinking, feeling creatures is not a matter of sentimentality, but of ethical responsibility. Skipper presents the latest training techniques, methods to help your horse cope with the demands of training and competition, the different approaches required for different breeds, ways to deal with the stress of travel and transportation, ethical techniques for correcting bad habits and behavior, and more. This guide, quite simply, will propel you toward a happier, healthier relationship with your horse.
Customer Reviews:
Title somewhat misleading.......2007-08-12
I got this book in hopes that it would explain how to "read" a horse and what certain reactions or movements by horses meant, but it really doesn't at all. It really is just a very general book about the nature of horses based on what they would naturally do in the wild. If you're looking for specific information about training or riding or bonding with your horse, or reading him, this book will not help. If you want to learn more about what is more natural for a horse, such as how it is fed, how much foraging it is allowed to do, then there is some info. here.
Useful and attractive book.......2007-05-03
What I love about this book are the beautiful photographs and illustrations. Yes, it has lots of great information, good insights into horse behavior, and very helpful training tips, but the best parts are the excellent full-color photos of horses who are clearly happy, healthy, and willingly in tune with their owners, as well as the diagrams that show things such as proper riding technique. It's also refreshing to find a horse training book that has a good balance between practicality and the pure joy of relating to animals.
Book Description
A compatible personality is the most desirable quality in a horse, yet it is much harder to assess than gait or conformation. All horses have distinct personality traits that make them more or less suitable for various riding styles and disciplines. Riders and trainers who understand how to work with, not against, a horse's temperament will be rewarded with a happier, more successful human/equine relationship.
Dressage trainer Yvonne Barteau describes the four basic equine personality types — social, fearful, aloof, and challenging — and the different clues to identify a horse's primary personality. Often the dominant personality type is complemented by a secondary trait, creating, for example, the aloof-challenging or fearful-social horse. Using clear signals and readily identi-fied behavior patterns, riders can determine any horse's type and then use this book's tips and techniques to improve training sessions.
Fun and enlightening as it is to analyze equine characteristics, it's just as important to understand how the personalities of both the rider and the trainer affect each horse. Barteau includes a self–evaluation quiz to help the reader determine what her own riding and handling preferences are and how she can use that knowledge to work more effectively with her current horse or to shop smarter when selecting a new equine partner.
Fascinating case studies, stories, and profiles of famous horses and their riders offer readers real-life examples of how compatible personalities work together to achieve great things!

Excellent!.......2004-10-22
I really appreciated the information set forth by Max. He really does attempt to understand the horse in each situation. Even though a lot of the info I already have for myself after working with horses for so long, a lot of it also gave me new insight. Very informative!
"Where's Max?".......2001-11-15
I really did not like reading a book that was so much in 2nd person, there was some really good information in the book, but I grew weary of hearing Lesley's say "Max finds" "Max then sends" "Max is asking" and would of liked to hear Max explain the how and why for himself.

In response to the reader who felt that Richard Maxwell was taking the credit for Monty's work, I would like to point out that Richard is infact Monty's STUDENT and is mentioned in Monty's book The Man Who Listens To Horses. Richard, who was in the household cavalry and present at the demonstration Monty gave for the Queen, was for a long time the only person authorized to use Monty's techniques here in the UK. Additionally having read Richards other book, and seen him in action, I can honestly assure readers that he is indeed brillient and can teach you a great deal about handling problem horses

about how to get your horse to actually *want* to do what you are asking of him. This book stresses humane, painless, fearless and fair interaction between horse and human. However, there are two things that bother me greatly about this book. First, the style of the writer makes this book more of an ego-trip than anything else (one can only say that many times someone is great and unbelievable). Second, as far as I know, the methods discussed in this book are largely from Monty Roberts, not from Richard Maxwell, and the latter seems to take all credit.
