The sun is barely up and the day is already going to the dogs. Literally. As Dr. Jessica Popper embarks on a house call to a local horse farm, her one-eyed Dalmatian, Lou, and her tailless Westie, Max, stumble upon something unexpected: a corpse half buried in the woods. Or whom?Enlisting the aid of her on-again, off-again lover, PI Nick Burby, Jess applies the stubbornness of a bloodhound and the agile moves of a cat to identify a menagerie of suspects…including one who wants her off the case badly enough to kill again.

Interesting Premise..........2006-07-01
In the 1st book in the Reigning Cats and Dogs Mystery series, we meet mobile veterinarian, Jessica Popper. Jessica runs her own vet service on wheels, and is out making one of her many house calls of the day when her dogs dig up a dead body at a horse farm. Near the body, a dead canary is found buried as well, and Jessica immediately feels she must investigate how she happened on this man's body. Being overly inquisitive, she starts an exhaustive search into the PR mogul's death, and quickly learns that the police don't seem to have much interest in the case. The victim has many enemies, even though he was a widely lauded Long Island businessman, and Jessica must tap into the help offered by a private investigator. This PI is none other than her ex-boyfriend, Nick Burby, who unsuccessfully tries to keep her off the case. And when Jessica is followed, and receives threats, everyone but Jess is convinced that she needs to leave the sleuthing to the professionals.
I gave this series a try even though some of the other reviews on Amazon were not very complimentary. I enjoyed the book, even though I feel that the book was a bit too long. I noticed that all of the books in the series are of similar lengths, even though I felt this one could have been at least 50 pages less than it was. I agree with previous reviewers that I was able to figure out the mystery pretty quickly, but I really enjoyed the character of Dr. Popper (what a funny name), the animals, and her tumultuous relationship with Nick. I definitely will try future books in this series, as I feel the strength of the characters is what make this book interesting. You may want to try this series if you love animals and are looking for a fresh, new cozy series.
The next book in the series is called "Putting on the Dog". Enjoy!
An annoying main character who only works as an anti-heroine.......2005-12-28
Dr. Jessica Popper follows all the paperback mystery character stereotypes with none of the charm.
1. She has the easily confused name - Dr. Popper not Dr. Pepper. (See Lacey Smithsonian.)
2. She has an on again-off again relationship with a sexy crime experienced man. (See Janet Evanovich's Joe Morelli and Ranger.) I felt far more empathy with Nick than I did Jessica! She's such a drama queen, run Nick, RUN!
3. She's all confused about life, but somehow can get the most damning details out of people.
All this would be fine, if she wasn't so *irritating*. She's shrill and childish with her ex -- far more so than any woman over 17 should be.
She has the capacity for compassion of a wading pool and her snoopy habits are grating, not amusing.
And while the veterinary details are fun, any moron can tell you that a dog who humps your leg is establishing dominance, not his sexual attraction for you.
All in all, skip this series. There are too many other books out there for the animal loving mystery lover!
An Uncertain Start to the Series.......2005-02-24
I like amateur sleuths and regional mysteries; throw in the fact that the hero is a vet with a menagerie of animals seemed like a perfect match. Then again, while Jessica Popper may be good with animals, she's definitely not a people person. And I don't mean that in a good way. Instead of eccentricities that would make her an entertaining character, Jessica packs so much emotional baggage she needs to see a shrink. I have no clue what her ex-boyfriend sees in her neurotic behavior; then again, I have no clue what Jessica sees in him, either.
The mystery elements to the story are fairly good, but the author is heavy-handed about doling out clues. Jessica is a lousy detective; she gathers good information that enables the reader to solve the crime long before she figures it out for herself. There's just the inevitable wait for Jessica to fall into the arms of the murderer and finally realize her mistake. The whole damsel in distress angle. How dull.
All this said, I yet may decide to read the second book in the series. I like amateur sleuths and regional mysteries...
Great Veterinarian Amateur Sleuth.......2004-12-16
Veterinarian, Dr. Jessica Popper heads off to a house call to a local horse farm. She ends up going a back way to the farm and has trouble with her van on the dirt road. Her two dogs take off into the woods and are soon barking. When she goes to investigate, she finds they have discovered a half buried corpse. Max, her Westie, digs up a dead canary which had been planted near the body.
Jessica feels compelled to discover who killed Tommee Frack, a PR mogul. She enlists the aid of her on-again off-again boyfriend Nick Burby, P.I.
At Tommee Frack's funeral, she ends up befriending his ex-wife. This opens the door for her to talk about Tommee. Jessica being a veterinarian opens the door with many other people in Tommee's life. She is able to find out quite a bit about his personal and business life by talking to these people.
To complicate Jessica's personal life, she begins dating a policeman. Where does her heart lie? She is very confused and this complicates her investigation as well.
Jessica's neighbor and good friend Betty is threatened. Jessica is concerned she is being followed, but can never get any information on the vehicle to have it traced. She doesn't let any of this stop her in her quest for the truth. Will she be able to discover that truth without anyone else being hurt or killed, herself included?
I really enjoyed this book. Jessica is a terrific character and so likeable. I like the premise of her being a traveling veterinarian. The author did a great job of weaving this into the story and making her connections with people be more believable. I would love to have Jessica treat our dog!
I hope there will be many books in this series. I highly recommend it!
Flawed but an enjoyable read nevertheless.......2004-09-27
This is one of those books that you understand as you're reading it that it's really not very good in some respects but you keep on reading it anyway because it's not so bad, either, and entertaining. But -- the characters are stereotyped, the detective-heroine is not so much spunky as reckless to the point of stupidity (refusing to take seriously the numerous signs that she's making a murderer very unhappy with her), there are some technical errors in the veterinary part (which really are extraneous to the plot anyway), and it's all so improbable.
But -- Baxter is a skillful enough writer that it's a pleasant read -- great for an airplane -- escape reading. The plotting is fairly good, but the series of interviews detective method is improbable and the main character has virtually no reason to get involved in finding the killer. When citizens get involved in murder investigations, I think it works best when there is a plausible reason why (like brother has been falsely accused, that sort of thing).
The plot involves Dr. Jessie Popper, mobile veterinarian (she has a traveling vet clinic), who discovers a body on her way to make a house call on a horse. There's a dead canary beside the body. For reasons that never are clear, Jessie decides to solve the murder and proceeds to do so by presenting herself (using various lies) to anyone she can find who knew the deceased. Her ex-boyfriend is a private investigator, although all he does is try to protect her. There's a fair amount of romance and a couple of very amusing scenes involving the men in Jessie's life.
There's also a lot that should have been edited out, like all the stuff about her landlord neighbor, which never quite works, and the vet visits, which have nothing to do with the plot. Given the way she uses her vet status to lie her way into interviews, Dr. Popper should be worried about losing her license.
I think Baxter has some good writing skills, but this mystery is clearly a first. I hope she will improve over time.
Book Description
The Cyanide Canary is the riveting true story of a horrific crime -- of a brave young man left for dead, an unscrupulous business mogul, and the relentless EPA investigator who fought to overcome injustice.
On a crisp summer morning in Soda Springs, Idaho, twenty-year-old Scott Dominguez kissed his fiancée goodbye and went to work for Allan Elias, the owner of Evergreen Resources, an enterprise Dominguez thought was in the business of producing fertilizer from mining waste. A former high school wrestler blessed with Tom Cruise-like good looks, Dominguez seemed to have unlimited potential, but by eleven o'clock that morning he was fighting for his life, pulled unconscious from a cyanide-laced storage tank and not expected to live through the night.
In Seattle, Special Agent Joseph Hilldorfer of the Environmental Protection Agency was given the job of finding out what happened to Dominguez and why. Initially Hilldorfer did not want the case, still frustrated by an intense two-year investigation that concluded with corporate polluters walking out of a federal courthouse free. But as he learned more, Hilldorfer, the son of a Pittsburgh cop with a blue-collar work ethic, was touched by Scott's suffering and outraged at Elias's callous disregard for his employees' well-being.
Hilldorfer and his partner, Special Agent Bob Wojnicz, joined forces with seasoned Boise Assistant U.S. Attorney George Breitsameter and an indefatigable, brilliant young attorney from the Department of Justice's Environmental Crimes Section named David Uhlmann. Together they would uncover the horrifying truths and build the criminal case against Elias.
A former New York whiz kid and Arizona realestate and business mogul, Elias owned businesses that had polluted Idaho with hazardous waste for nearly a decade. Yet Elias never spent a single day in jail, openly boasted of beating the environmental quality regulations, and avoided any significant fines. Would this case be any different?
Hilldorfer, Uhlmann, and the government trial team embarked on an epic courtroom battle that would stretch them to the limits. What began as a struggle for justice for one young man became a fight by the EPA for its very ability to enforce the nation's environmental laws and to bring environmental polluters to justice. In the balance was whether Allan Elias would ever spend a day in jail.
Gripping, powerful, and compulsively readable, The Cyanide Canary is a major achievement in the classic tradition of A Civil Action, a book that unfolds like fiction yet is alarmingly true.

Chemical Industry Point of View.......2007-01-04
I was quite impressed with the detailed account of the trial and the events leading up to it !!!!
On the other hand I was sorely disappointed with the seeming total disregard for the workers safety !!!!
It is fly-by-nite outfits like this that give the rest of the chemical industry a bad name.
Many of us have spent our entire or large portion of our working life ensuring the workers safety !!!!
Thanks for a great book and being a voice for the worker.
Canaries and Thugs .......2006-07-30
Picking up a well-written book always scares me. It means everything on my carefully planned TO-DO list (except job and kitties, of course) will get reprioritized. Oh well.
I'm about halfway through a real page-turner of an exposé, `The Cyanide Canary,' by Joseph Hilldorfer and Robert Bugoni. This true account of an environmental waste cover-up brings to mind Jonathan Harr's "A Civil Action," with parallel themes of corruption and negligence. Here Hilldorfer is the primary EPA agent in charge of bringing hazardous materials transgressor Allan Elias to justice. Elias is described as an outrageously amoral con-artist whose in-your-face OSHA violations are breathtaking in their heedlessness. Working with larger chemical waste corporations such as Kerr-McGee, Elias' chicanery and unabashed stonewalling has allowed him in the past to slip through the net of the Environmental Protection Agency. Hilldorfer becomes personally vested in this case when he learns of the significant neurological damage sustained by one of the men Elias sent to clean out the `tank.'
The `EPA' is generally regarded as a behemoth greatly to be feared, but the agency as depicted here has few enforcement `teeth' and even fewer agents with a desire to sink those teeth into violators. While the public believes that pursuing environmental lawbreakers on criminal or civil levels is second-nature to the EPA, that's not evident in the book so far. The author suspects the EPA is picking and choosing its battles involving criminal prosecution.
`The Cyanide Canary' was inspired by that sine-qua-non of all good writing: passion and compassion. An issue is only as credible as how well it's expressed, and the articulation in this book is superb. Objectivity and balance --even understatement--pack a powerful punch with me. Writers Joseph Hilldorfer and Robert Dugoni manage to make their case dramatic and compelling through a wry Jack Webb `just-the-facts-ma'am' style that allows readers to easily tap into their own reserves of disgust and wonder, outrage and sympathy.
Like the author in `A Civil Action,' Joseph Hilldorfer finds this investigation leeching into his personal life, his thoughts, his sleep.
And so do I. I must find out how things end here. The cats are fed, but the bills, dishes and deadlines will wait. I can't resist the mesmerizing siren of a particular `canary' one minute more.

Like a good Law & Order episode.......2006-04-02
We lived and worked in eastern Washington State during the mid-1990s for environmental companies and both had to take safety classes where they explained the dangers of confined space entries and the precautions you have to take for working in those environments, not to mention all the other regulatory and safety requirements needed for working with hazardous chemicals. We were lucky: we were educated, well-paid, working for environmental clean-up companies with lucrative government contracts where safety was good business practice.
The circumstances detailed in The Cyanide Canary are 180 degrees different. Allen Elias, the owner of the Evergreen facility, was not engaged in environmental cleanup, but working on the cheap trying to develop a commercial means of reprocessing waste. His employees were high-school graduates desperate for a job, with no safety training or understanding of the requirements for confined space work, nor any clue, really, about the hazards of certain chemicals--things Elias did know. Which is why Elias was charged with criminal conduct after one of his workers was injured during a tank cleanout. The story of the accident, along with the resulting investigation, and trial, makes up this book, which reads like a long Law & Order episode, almost complete with the "Ka-Chung" sound at the end of each chapter. As such, it should appeal to L&O fans, or anyone with an interest in how environmental law is being developed.
The weakest part of the book is the beginning chapter, where the authors attempt to portray the events of the accident in an almost novelistic method, including trying for some suspense about whether the victim, Scott Dominguez, would survive or not. After they get that out of the way (more than likely, a suggestion from some bone-headed editor who felt the beginning needed some punch or a grab for the reader), the book settles down into its portrayal of Hilldorfer's investigation, bolstered by all the interviews and transcripts that were eventually used to indict Elias and bring the case to trial. The truly riveting part of the book is not the opening, but the trial, the question of whether Elias will be found guilty, and whether or not he will attempt to flee justice.
I enjoyed the book quite a bit, reading it in two sessions during a train ride to and from NYC. It's a revealing look into the legal world, and also an interesting case study between the kinds of murder cases usually seen on Law & Order and the "white collar" crime that usually does not end up in jail sentences for the convicted.
Tragic book provides factually detailed and great read!.......2004-12-18
I bought this book for a friend for Christmas and found I had to go back and buy two more copies (one for myself and as another gift), because I started reading it before wrapping it and couldn't put it down. I won't call this tragic "story"--because the word story implies it is a work of fiction. However, the detailed endnotes based on sworn affidavit, deposition and trial testimony, as well as numerous citations to witness interviews show it is well researched recital of shockingly true facts. Written in the third person, it reads as easily as a fiction novel (including simplified medical, chemical and legal jargon), but it clearly is not. Given the monstrosity of the events, it is easy to understand how witnesses involved in the investigation and trial would easily remembered what they said and saw at the time the events occurred. This is a definite read for anyone interested in a well written and researched compelling story of finding justice in a small Idaho-company based town. The only people who might not want to read it now would be those who don't want to have their holiday preparations waylaid (because it will pull you into the story), or those who are still denying the facts of what happened.
Libertarian Weighs In.......2004-12-16
I'm a long time Idaho resident and libertarian. I am pretty cynical about help from the Federal government, but...
In Idaho, someone tried to get ahead by cutting corners in ways that impacted others. We have a perfect role for government to step in. This is a true tragedy. The story is almost over and then takes another twist that really had me sprinting to the end of the book.
As I promote free markets, people always ask what will keep big business from destroying the world. This is a great story about the difficulties, and ultimate triumph of the government's effort to make one citizen accountable for his actions.

My name is Arden Feldman. I think that the book was very good. I liked how they solved the mystery. I really liked the part when the kids came out of the bushes and they looked like ninjas. I could not stop reading the book because it was so good.
Good Mystery.......2002-03-08
What I like about the book is that the book has a lot pages to read and is interesting about A canary.
The canary is lost and there are three kids, Dink Josh and Ruth that found the canary.
The book is a good book for kids who like mysteries.
I like to read too much.
Nice children's mystery!.......1998-07-22
My 5 year old son loves this series -- we read them as quickly as they come out. In this one, pets are disappearing -- but why? These are not exactly mysteries -- unlike, say, the Clue Jr. books there's no way for the reader to solve the crimes before the crooks are caught -- but they are interesting and fun to discuss, chapter by chapter, as the plot thickens!
Book Description
Like the canaries that alerted miners to a poisonous atmosphere, issues of race point to underlying problems in society that ultimately affect everyone, not just minorities. Addressing these issues is essential. Ignoring racial differences--race blindness--has failed. Focusing on individual achievement has diverted us from tackling pervasive inequalities. Now, in a powerful and challenging book, Lani Guinier and Gerald Torres propose a radical new way to confront race in the twenty-first century.
Given the complex relationship between race and power in America, engaging race means engaging standard winner-take-all hierarchies of power as well. Terming their concept "political race," Guinier and Torres call for the building of grass-roots, cross-racial coalitions to remake those structures of power by fostering public participation in politics and reforming the process of democracy. Their illuminating and moving stories of political race in action include the coalition of Hispanic and black leaders who devised the Texas Ten Percent Plan to establish equitable state college admissions criteria, and the struggle of black workers in North Carolina for fair working conditions that drew on the strength and won the support of the entire local community.
The aim of political race is not merely to remedy racial injustices, but to create truly participatory democracy, where people of all races feel empowered to effect changes that will improve conditions for everyone. In a book that is ultimately not only aspirational but inspirational, Guinier and Torres envision a social justice movement that could transform the nature of democracy in America.

Reframing a volatile issue.......2005-04-08
Racism has been an impediment in living up to our ideals as a democracy. It will continue to be a sensitive and volatile issue here in America unless we make an effort to eliminate it. The authors have done a formidable job in reframing the problem in a way to help us trancend it, come together and work toward a solution to what W.E.B. DuBois called the problem of the 20th century. It's a difficult book but well worth the effort!
You are kidding me?.......2004-05-19
I know that professors from Harvard and UT are smart, but do they really feel the need to express this in their writing? The entire first chapter of this book is nothing but fluff, using nearly incomprehensible $5 words. The authors do not get their point across in a clear and concise manner and the rest of the book suffers because of this. Do not buy this book.
Timely and bold.......2004-04-08
A bold call for bringing people together and transforming society. If you are class conscious and anti-racist read this book, it will be worth the challenge.
THIS BOOK RECALLS ELLISON'S INVISIBLE MAN.......2003-07-05
Because it's the best book about race relations in America since Ellison's masterpiece of fifty years ago. By "race relations" I mean blacks and whites, as Ellison would have meant the words. But The Miner's Canary is about much more, it's about all-minority-cultures and whites in America. And in direct opposition to the color-blind solution the Supreme Court has decided the Constitution requires, the book's authors esteem and celebrate and find strength, including political strength, in our separate cultural identities -- including the separate (non-oppressive) cultural identities of whites.
When I put The Miner's Canary down, I wished I had read the Acknowledgments first, then the chapter "by" Torres. This is a difficult book, it has many authors, and the voice I identify as Ms. Guinier's seems sometimes to address junior high school students and other times to address law professors. So the book has many levels of analysis, and it treats its central topic -- political race -- from many angles. These are not shortcomings, but they add up to a very demanding book.
The book's real-life examples, however, are all wonderful and all one -- compelling and utterly elucidating. And the long illustration of how Greek democracy in action would look if it followed American districting and apportionment rules is simply surpassing wonderful.
Then there's the book's immediacy. The Nobel Prize winning econometrician Robert Fogel has emphasized the roles of technology and religious activism in America's movements for social justice, relegating progressivism to the status of an adjunct to the latter. The Miner's Canary, on the other hand, puts the struggle for social justice squarely within the politics of progressivism. This is not necessarily inconsistent with Fogel (whatever one thinks of the validity of his argument), assuming Fogel's subject is movements in the past before about 1980 when the Big Sleep set in -- which it is -- and assuming The Miner's Canary is describing developments since about 1980, which it is. The book says something new has been happening, and it started being more than unrelated occurrences about twenty five years ago. This new thing Guinier and Torres call political race.
The ambition, originality and insights of this book far outweigh its difficulties due to multiple voices and an "un-ironed out" presentation. I give it five stars.
Why this book fails.......2003-02-07
Guiner and Torres write pedantically with little organization or cohesion. Although the anecdotes were interesting, the authors' arguments reek of indolent emotionalism rather than theory and sound policy.
I realize this is a critical review. I try to be fair to all viewpoints, but this vacuous work warrants these harsh words. Gerald Torres was a visiting professor at Harvard, where his indifferent attitude to his own class and examination live on in infamy. He is not proficient at conveying information.
In short, while Torres and Guiner intended to write a mentally stimulating book, this work is instead mind numbing. Spend your money on another book. For alternate reading on race theory, try "Unequal Treatment: A Study in the Neoclassical Theory of Discrimination" by Lundahl and Wadensjo.

It really helped me.......2005-02-17
I have had ME/CFS for 13 years now and for the first 4 life was bad. I read everything I could and this book provided the best solutions for me!
Even so it took me 5 more years for things to work as it took me that long to find a doctor in New Zealand that agreed to try and help - finding a medic to help is the most differcult task. Even then we had to agree on a modified treatment but at least he read the book as well and it helped.
Dr Ali provides a detailed solution to the problem. The solutions offered will not apply to all but they will provide a strong basis to find your own
Turning Hopelessness into Hope!.......2002-02-11
As i turned the pages of this book, i felt that for the first time in 9years someone knew exactly how my body was functioning, and could explain why! This was such a relief. So many books are about personal experiences of the condition, but they do not answer any questions. This common sense presentation, backed with clinical research findings and a human face in holistic medicine, was so refreshing! Congratualtons on your pioneering work, would love to know if you have any recent findings or publications or how i can find a practioner in the UK that follows and treats patients in line with your philosophy. Reading the book, for the first time made me realise that Chronic means now and forever, a hard fact to swallow, however what it did do was show me a way of managing the symptoms so that i might have some quality of life in the future. From my lowest point when i contemplated ringing the Samaratians i picked up this book and it has given me Hope! Thank you so much
NO MORE DRUGS!.......2000-12-08
We CFS sufferers are going to change the face of medicine. This book explains why and how. If you have CFS you must stop going to any doctor who prescribes a drug to relieve your symptoms. You must stop going to an allergist who is still giving shots using the useless RAST test. They are just making your coffin more comfortable. Get to a holistic physician who knows that treating and reversing CFS requires nondrug nutrient therapies and effective allergy treatment. Parents should especially read this book to realize the extreme importance of identifying allergy problems in their children now - before they develop autoimmune disorders and emotional disturbances when they get older.
Best book on topic........2000-07-19
Like many others in this group I felt much the same. I read this book 5 years ago and I still look at it as a book that guided me in the right direction. Today I live a normal life but follow many of the guidelines laid in this book. One important rule to getting better is to look for problems and not expect sympathy. Don't expect a wonder pill this sickness is a wakeup call you will appreciate in the future if you make the commitment. This book along with an open attitude and continuous changes & education will help you get back your life if you suffer from the pain of CFS.
Absolutely wonderful.......1999-09-09
I have had ME/CFS for a little over 10 years. This book was recommended to me. I read it, absorbed it, and my own consultant has used some of Majid Ali's advice in my treatment. I have come a long way.....I am getting better. I can in all honesty recommend this book to all sufferers and those who wish to know more about this ' tip of the iceberg' illness. ( Medics may wish to avoid some of the anecdotal stuff in the first part of the book, although try to read it if you have time ). I have read many books on ME/CFS and some are good. If you can only go for one.......this is it!!

Adorable.......2005-08-02
Yes, this book is adorable. The pictures are wonderful. They range from images of canaries eating in a large group, to canaries at a show, to canaries in cages, to a canary-breeding room, canaries in nests, canaries canaries!!
This book is very detailed, and covers bird accomodations, nutrition, breeding, history, illness prevention and cure, type canaries, color canaries, and song canaries.
There are examples, very well photographed, of many of the type and color canaries.
He is a real fan of song canaries, and gives interesting examples of the types of song, the breeds of song-canaries, and their potential.
Just like the visual support for the color and type canaries goes beyond mere description, I would have loved to have a supplementary song-cd to go with the last chapter. It is inspiring, and than it leaves you off, wondering about this magical sound that he describes.
Very cute, very nice, relaxing book; a journey into the world of canaries.
Most comprehensive canary book............2004-06-28
I recently expanded my bird collection to include two canaries and as I knew little about these pet birds, I purchased several books on the subject from Amazon. According to Barron's THE CANARY HANDBOOK which I have found the most useful of the four books I bought, there are three kinds of canaries: "type", "song" or "color". My birds (two bright yellow brothers) are supposed to be song canaries, but according to the breeder, the dominant one will do most of the singing. Apparently, girl canaries don't sing but not all boy canaries can carry a pleasant tune.
Barron's handbook is filled with many up-close photos showing the many different kinds of canaries as well as various stages of development including breeding tips. In a charming chapter entitled 'Understanding the Canary' the handbook shares some history of the domesticated bird along with a little bit of information about canaries in the wild. The handbook says the canary has been domesticated for five centuries and breeding and marketing these birds via peddlers once formed the chief industry of the Harz region of German Black Forest.
The handbook includes a section on `Feeding Canaries' and discusses "color" feeding. Beginning in 1870, cayenne pepper was mixed with canary seed to improve the red color of the Norwich and Yorkshire canaries. Later on, breeders and owners discovered sweet red peppers were more effective. The authors of this handbook suggest mixing canthaxanthin in egg yolk. This handbook includes many similar tips for helping your canary obtain the best food and care.
