Book Description

A funny, profound book about the enduring wisdom of dogs, from the host of the enormously popular National Dog Show

Charming and hilarious, It's Okay to Miss the Bed on the First Jump is more than a mere celebration of man's best friend. In this lighthearted and reflective exploration of how and why dogs have served as some of our most valuable and enlightened teachers, well-known and well- loved actor/show host John O'Hurley (Seinfeld, Dancing with the Stars) shares lessons learned from his life with canine companions, including: Every 15 Minutes Is a New Day; Never Miss a Nap; When One Person Stops Petting You, Move On; A Cold Can of Meat Is Still a Feast; and You're Only as Big as You Think You Are, to name a few.

“Dogs, after all, have pure hearts, trusting natures, a zest for living, noble characters, and an ability to take things in stride,” writes O'Hurley in the book's introduction. “They can be counted on, and are pleasant companions. They know what's important, always. How many humans do you know about which you could say the same?” At once poignantly moving and laugh-out-loud funny, It's Okay to Miss the Bed on the First Jump is a book for the dog lover on everyone's holiday shopping list.

Anyone familiar with Mr. O'Hurley's Seinfeld-game show personality will recognize it immediately from this book. If you have a close friend who's a dog and enjoy humor you can relate to his stories. Makes a great gift. Warning! Do not read this book in public. People may give you strange looks when you burst out laughing, particularly at inappropriate times.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2007-08-04

I read this book during a very difficult time in my life and it was absolutely the best medicine! I laughed so much that my then husband was ready to send me to the "funny farm". We can definitely learn a lot from our pets. John, since I read your book I take afternoon naps and feel much better! I own a supersized lazy dog, a wonderful Great Pyrenees.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us and thanks for the laughs!

5 out of 5 stars One great book for dog lovers!.......2007-07-28

I haven't read a book that was so much fun to read in a long time. For anyone that has a love of animals, especially dogs, this is a gem.

It brought back memories of my first dog and happy thoughts of the ones I have had since. It is quite obvious that the author has a very special place in his heart for "mans' best friend". I know that in my youth my dog was definately my best friend and one whose company I enjoyed the most!

5 out of 5 stars Anxiety Relief for Your Dog--and You.......2007-04-19

As with her other "booklet" style guides, Patricia McConnell has managed to cram a vast amount of useful information into a small space. She briefly discusses the causes of separation anxiety, and how to recognize it. The information on what separation anxiety is *not* is invaluable for owners who might be having difficulty distinguishing between true separation anxiety and boredom (a by-product of the dog being understimulated mentally and physically). She then makes a number of suggestions that are straightforward and easy to follow. It is true that some dogs will need more personal assistance in the form of a behavior specialist or veterinary behaviorist, but this guide is a good place to start.

4 out of 5 stars Additional help for canine behavior.......2007-04-01

For those of you who love your dog this is another tool to use for helping the reader find the reasons for separation anxiety and fear of being alone. Within the pages are several suggestions for relieving this stressful behavior in your beloved dog. A good booklet to add to your library of helpful ideas and proven remedies for positive reinforcement training for your dog exhibiting these fears.

A very concise, practical approach to dealing with a difficult problem. It was fairly easy to incorporate the training into our hectic household. Since implementing McConnell's techniques we no longer have a stressed out dog when we leave the house. We couldn't be happier.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The dogs who found him... that "who" just gives him away........2007-09-21

The grammar error in the title shows me that this book is written by a true dog lover. A charming collection of writings, it shows a man making a life for abandoned animals in the face of catastrophe, health trouble and money worries. He really does concentrate on the dogs... what they do, where they go, what they like, what they need. Most of all, this is a book about who they love. The author is overwhelmed at times, though he knows he's chosen (or been chosen by) his own troubles. I have misgivings about pit bulls as a breed, and it's clear that Foster is completely aware of the dangers himself, but what a lovely dog family he's assembled. Highly recommended, but only for those of us who see animals for the fascinating, complicated characters they can be.

5 out of 5 stars The Dogs Who Found Me.......2007-09-04

All three of our pets found themselves in the frightening position of having been left behind (One in AZ, one in MA and the third in NH). How they found their way into our hearts and home is miraculous! Consequently, we have a very real fondness for the topic of this book. It's an excellent story and was packaged to arrive in excellent condition! The Dogs Who Found Me: What I've Learned from Pets Who Were Left Behind

3 out of 5 stars Easy Read.......2007-08-10

I found the author to be a hypocrite on a few issue surrounding pet onwership and rescue. He voiced his opinion strongly about people who are unable to meet the expenses of pet ownership, yet he had a sponsor pay all vet bills for heartworm and various other health issues, as well as covering other expenses for an injured sick dog he couldn't bear to live without. He would have found himself in the exact same position as some of the 'unfit' petowners he described if he didn't have the animal contacts.

The author didn't talk much about how his obession with rescuing dogs fit into his social life. While social situations were in fact discussed,I never felt I had a good understanding of how this man managed a full time job, numerous animals (some with health and emotional issues)and a social life outside of his few friends who also spent their time picking up strays.
The book is not one which has remained in my home. After I finished it I took it to my vets office while picking up one of my dogs who had just been neutered at my own expense~no sponsorship here!

4 out of 5 stars Anything for the dogs.......2007-07-07

I got this book last weekend and read it in a day. It's a very good and easy read, that will make you smile and tear up along the way.
I've been pretty dog-obsessed lately and i was almost sad when i finished it, i wanted to read more.
The world, and dogs, need more Ken Foster.

4 out of 5 stars dog lover.......2007-05-13

I love dogs and have 2 spoiled ones. I always wish I could afford more and be able to help many others. I have taken a couple in and helped to find homes for them, but Ken Foster has done so much more. It would be a better world to live in if we could be this kind to all animals in this world.

5 out of 5 stars San Diego Vizsla Mom.......2007-03-07

There is no greater love than the love from a Vizsla. I own 2 boys, brothers, and this book is right on. My boys are very different exhibing different personality traits although they have the same parents, 1 litter apart from one another. A must read for anyone who is contemplating owning this very active, loving, tender, breed.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book on a Wonderful Dog.......2007-01-16

What an outstanding collection of information on the Hungarian Shorthaired Pointer. A sine qua non for those wanting information on the vizsla: ancestory, breeding, history, personality, behavior, mood, training, feeding, grooming, health care. Mr. Coffman covers every aspect, from interesting general knowledge to practical information and advice. I have owned a vizsla for a year and this book has enhanced the enjoyment of my the dog as an animal, a pet and a extraordinary companion. If you are contemplating acquiring a vizsla or are an owner looking for insight and guidance, I recommend this book to you as being well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Vizsla's.......2007-01-11

This is an excellent book with so much information on Vizsla's. It is practical and will help you better understand this breed and how they work and think. I would recommend it to any new owner or anyone interested in learning the right way to care for, train and enjoy this wonderful dog breed.

4 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2007-01-09

This book was right on target with my new Vizsla puppy. It has tons of information, including breed history, AKC standard, growth guidelines, etc. I gave this book 4 stars because it included pictures, but they weren't in color. I feel that for the price, they could've included a few color pictures. This book really sums up the breed very well. I would recommend it to any new Vizsla owner!

Book Description

The United States Marine Corps has long enjoyed the reputation of being America's premiere fighting force. Whenever crisis looms one hears the familiar chorus, Send in the Marines. How was this reputation first earned? Many would argue that the Marine Corps stepped up and took its place alongside America's other armed forces in 1918 at Chateau Thierry and Belleau Wood. So fierce was the 4th Marine Brigade in combat that the overwhelmed German defenders dubbed them Teufulhunden, literally Devil Dogs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An essential and wonderful book.......2002-11-04

Here is a wonderfully detailed and moving book. It satisfies the serious scholar in its overwhelming details, and yet carries the `human thread' to show the true wonder of what these marines did. My grandfather was with the 6th Marines at Belleau Wood and I guarantee he would have loved and respected this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2000-08-31

This book is excellent. All the other reviews are dead on accurate.

Just to add something different to the discussion...

I would have given it five stars but for one thing. Occasionally the detail overwhelmed the writing and story telling aspect lagged. Just every so often it started to read like an after-action report. Don't let this put you off, just don't plan on being able to read parts of it right before bed time.

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch Reading.......2000-03-09

With so few great titles on the American experience in the Great War this book is a must read. It reads very well and spares no small detail. It gives you a "leather-necks" view of the the war in France.

4 out of 5 stars Excellant.......1999-07-01

I support the Leatherneck review and am tempted to rate it 5 stars. It is refreshing to read not only the USMC WW1 history but the authors considered opinions on the battles and personalities involved.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding - a landmark work.......1999-06-24

From Leatherneck Magazine - March, 1999

The rich thread of tradition has woven itself throughout the tapestry of Marine Corps history. From these threads, Marines of today uphold the standards of service and sacrifice of the past as the proud inheritors of this heritage. Of all the eras of Marine Corps history, arguably the most romantic and colorful would be the involvement of the Marines in the First World War. The Marine Corps of today is still flavored by the traditions and experiences of those years. Words such as Devil Dog and Foxhole still permeate the language of our Marines and students from The Basic School have adopted Belleau Wood and travel over regularly to assist in the maintenance of this hallowed ground, the only wholly-owned American battlefield on foreign soil. By the same token, this has remained one of the least explored eras throughout the history of the Marines.

Certainly, the classics of Asprey's "At Belleau Wood" and Stallings' "Doughboys" stand forth as valuable contributions to the understanding of that history. However, no one has published a comprehensive examination of the actions and service of the 4th "Marine" Brigade until now.

It is with a clear love and empathy for this subject that former Marine, George Clark undertook the monumentous task of shifting through and composing the far-flung resources of documentation into a concise and readable history of the Fourth "Marine" Brigade and it's service from formation until disbandment.

Clark's work, drawn from 25 years of research into the subject, captures the color and character, as well as the facts and figures, of the Marine Brigade as no previous work. Based on contemporaneous unit histories, Marine diaries, personal letters, as well as official documents and correspondence, this book blows open the door and illuminates the incredible story of ordinary men, who, under extraordinary circumstances, left a legacy of valor courage and sacrifice unsurpassed to this day.

Highly detailed and filled with fascinating insights, "Devil Dogs" takes no prisoners. It tells the unvarnished tale of the largely volunteer force, leavened by a strong cadre of seasoned Officers and NCOs, who formed the nucleus of the 2nd Division (Regulars) of the infant American Expeditionary Force. The author offers interesting and thought-provoking opinions of the success and failure of the various Officers who led the Marines in combat in France and makes no apology for ruffling a few feathers along the way.

A rollicking, fun book to read, Clark takes the reader along from the stateside clashes with Pershing and the Army bureaucracy to training in France and through the battles of Belleau Wood, Soissons, St. Mihiel, Blanc Mont and Meuse-Argonne. Chapters also cover the history of Marines in the Occupation of Germany and explore the little known history of the Marines in the Composite Regiment of the AEF - Pershing's Showpiece.

Though not for those wishing a "quick" synopsis of Marine involvement in the Great War, "Devil Dogs" is a must for any student of Marine History or for those wishing to get the full picture of this most colorful era. Clark's work justifiably joins Asprey and Stallings as a modern classic of the American experience in the Great War. With valuable lessons for today's military, it stands as a true picture of the success by leadership, unmatched valor and pure guts, against a seasoned and battle-tested foe.

I bought this set for my grandson and am very pleased with it! It has five titles (The Color Kittens, Mister Dog, I Can Fly, Baby Farm Animals, The Jolly Barnyard, and The Happy Man and His Dump Truck) which are old favorites with some favorite author/illustrators, including Margaret Wise Brown and Garth Williams. The reason for buying the set AS a set, however, was the blank create-your-own Golden Book! I think this is a great idea and look forward to seeing my grandson's own story!

Read it cried as usual. Great for my daughter. Did not do much for me on the healing process.

5 out of 5 stars A reminder: Always say I LoveYou........2007-09-24

Of the three books I purchased for my two young friends (boys, aged 6 and 10) who was experiencing the loss of their life-time friend, Charlie-the beagle... this was the BEST BOOK of the three.
The pictures are wonderful, the text simple but meaningful, and most of all.. it tells us all that we should love and express that love while our 'friends' are with us. "I'll Always Love You" brought tears to even the adults reading it with the children; also a good lesson that it ok to cry and grief for our four-legged friends even if we are a grownup.
I'd recommend this book for any age child.

5 out of 5 stars nice.......2007-08-30

Sweet story. The best book I've seen so far to handle, in a children's story way, the death of a dog. The kid moves on pretty fast. That was the only discordant part for me, but i think i understand where the author was going with that...we don't need things to help us remember (except for me, i have the worst memory ever). Extremely cute illustrations. I am 36 years old and I cried when I read it. I had a best pal like the kid in the book, who lived with me for 13 years until July 2007. The ham hitting the floor reminded me of my buddy. Other books I found helpful, as an adult, before and after having to choose the time and day to let my best friend go. The authors give some contacts and advice if you are hitting a wall with your grief and how to take care of yourself. The Loss of a PetandGrieving the Death of a Pet, i also saw a journal for remembering that i am planning to buy. My Personal Pet Remembrance Journal.

5 out of 5 stars FAMILY... TEACHER... MUST HAVE.......2007-05-07

Wilhelm, H. (1985). I'll always love you. New York: Scholastic, Inc.

Synopsis: Can pets live forever? This is the story of a young boy and his pet dog, Elfie. Elfie and the boy do everything together. As the boy grows older, Elfie grows older at a much quicker rate. Not a night goes by when the boy tells his best friend, Elfie, how much he loves her. This is without a story for all families that have a pet. Young children learn the importance of loving and caring for their pets.

Evaluation: The concept of dying is a subject many families do not explore until the time comes when it is necessary to discuss. 5 out of 5 stars A Moving Story.......2007-05-04

Elfie and her owner are best friends. They run together, play together, and sleep together. But, as her owner is growing up, Elfie is growing old; and round. She doesn't quite have as much energy as before. Instead of running, she prefers to rest. The family takes Elfie to see the vet, but sadly, the vet says that there's nothing that he can do for Elfie. She's just getting old. The boy now carries Elfie up to bed each night so she can still sleep with him.

However, one morning, Elfie doesn't wake up. She died during the night. Her family grieves and cries, and they bury her in the back yard. The little boy's neighbor offers him one of his new puppies, but he refuses. He wishes to honor Elfie's memory. He does proclaim that when he gets a new pet, he'll always say "I'll always love you".

Our family has a terminally ill dog, and a dear friend loaned us this great book to help our children deal with her impending death. I was moved to tears as I read this book. I could easily relate to what the family in the book was going through. Pets become members of the family just like children do, and dealing with the loss of a pet can be very difficult. This book teaches the reader that, despite the death of the pet, we should remember all of the good times we shared with the pet.

I give this book my highest recommendation. If your family has suffered the loss of a pet, or has a pet that is very sick like mine, then read this fine book. It will help you prepare for the loss, but it will also remind you to remember the good times you shared with your pet.

Alan Alda's autobiography travels a path less taken. Instead of a sensationalist, name-dropping page-turner, Alda writes about his life as a memory play, an exercise in recollecting his childhood, his parents (dad Robert was a veteran on stage, film, and vaudeville), and his career. You want to know about Alda's most famous work, the eleven years on M*A*S*H? You have exactly 16 pages to do so, and guess what: It's one of the least entertaining parts of the book. But should fans of the award-winning actor-writer-director avoid this slim memoir? Not in the slightest. Slyly humorous and open-hearted, Never Have Your Dog Stuffed is a breezy, most enjoyable read. Alda's ability to recall his childhood (including backstage at raunchy vaudeville shows), school years, stage struggles and successes is as entertaining as one of his Emmy-winning teleplays. Alda is inordinately attune recalling life's crystallizing moments: when religion no longer worked for him, how something in his pocket made him forever a better actor, or his mother's painful descent into dementia. Alda's ever present humor is a great asset whether telling a charming love story on meeting his wife Arlene or a life-threatening illness in a remote part of Chile ("I am in and out of consciences, but I never take a break from the screaming. The show must go on."). Like Alda's persona, his book is more human and less flash. What would be filler in most books is often the mot entertaining and revealing here; especially Alda's dynamic relationship with his parents. Really, who else would name his memoir after an unfortunate trip to the taxidermist? The year the book was published during a revival for the 69-year-old; he was nominated for an Oscar, Emmy, and Tony in the same year. --Doug Thomas

Book Description

He’s one of America’s most recognizable and acclaimed actors–a star on Broadway, an Oscar nominee for The Aviator, and the only person to ever win Emmys for acting, writing, and directing, during his eleven years on M*A*S*H. Now Alan Alda has written a memoir as elegant, funny, and affecting as his greatest performances.

“My mother didn’t try to stab my father until I was six,” begins Alda’s irresistible story. The son of a popular actor and a loving but mentally ill mother, he spent his early childhood backstage in the erotic and comic world of burlesque and went on, after early struggles, to achieve extraordinary success in his profession.

Yet Never Have Your Dog Stuffed is not a memoir of show-business ups and downs. It is a moving and funny story of a boy growing into a man who then realizes he has only just begun to grow.

It is the story of turning points in Alda’s life, events that would make him what he is–if only he could survive them.

From the moment as a boy when his dead dog is returned from the taxidermist’s shop with a hideous expression on his face, and he learns that death can’t be undone, to the decades-long effort to find compassion for the mother he lived with but never knew, to his acceptance of his father, both personally and professionally, Alda learns the hard way that change, uncertainty, and transformation are what life is made of, and true happiness is found in embracing them.

Never Have Your Dog Stuffed, filled with curiosity about nature, good humor, and honesty, is the crowning achievement of an actor, author, and director, but surprisingly, it is the story of a life more filled with turbulence and laughter than any Alda has ever played on the stage or screen.

5 out of 5 stars Fun read!.......2007-10-10

What an enjoyable book. I really got a feel for who this guy is - as much as you can from a book. Very down to Earth and funny. Thanks Mr. Alda. What a great way to spend a couple of evenings.

5 out of 5 stars A real glimpse.......2007-10-09

This book was an inspiration to me because i felt that Alan Alda was being really honest in telling his story.

5 out of 5 stars Funny.......2007-09-12

I enjoyed reading this book. I enjoyed watching Alan Alda on M.A.S.H. and he is just as funny when it comes to his writing. I'm passing this book to all my friends.

5 out of 5 stars Too quick! I want more........2007-06-28

Ok, the title caught my attention. That and the info that Alda was able to view every child's dream behind the scenes of a vaudeville act. This book did offer quite a few surprises about how rough Alda's childhood was. He flew through many parts of his life that I wish he would have described more in-depth. Yet, Alda is very frank about his failings along with his success. He only mentions West Wing near the end of the book. I would have loved to hear a little more about his experiences on the show. I am looking forward to the next addition to his life's story.

4 out of 5 stars Love Alan Alda!!.......2007-06-05

I really enjoyed this book. I first became interested in Alan Alda after I started watching reruns of M*A*S*H, just like many other people. However, I know there is more to him than Hawkeye Pierce and it was nice that this book proved that. There is a short section about the show, but nothing more substantial than any other part of the book. It was very interesting to read about his childhood, his struggle with his mom's mental illness and the bizarre things that happened to him throughout his life. I liked the writing style and it flowed very easily.

The only reason I'm not giving this book 5 stars is because I was left wanting more. It was a very short book, especially for someone as accomplished and interesting as he is. I wish it were much longer and much more in depth. Other than that, it was a very good read.

5 out of 5 stars A Pug Named Mr. Beefy!.......2007-08-27

This is a darling book! I can't resist a children's book with a pug and this one perfectly portrays a pug's personality.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2007-07-05

My daughter loves dogs and the pictures are realistic paintings that are beautiful. Another plus about this book is that it is amusing enough for me that I can read it over and over again when my daughter insists. It is hilarious to adults who love dog breeds because the poems are spot-on with breed characteristics.

4 out of 5 stars doggy goodness.......2007-04-29

I have some issues with this book, primarily the lack of strong color -- but the overall effect is wonderful and the poems are charming. The author really understands the huge and complex doggy mind.

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2007-02-08

This is one of the best children's books to come out in a long time. I gave them as gifts to several people - some adults - and they all loved them. Both the author and the illustrator know dogs & what they would say if they could!

5 out of 5 stars Great dog book!.......2007-01-19

A wonderful book for all ages. If your children like dogs they'll be thrilled with every page.

Veteran columnist Molly Ivins, a rare and highly irreverent Texas liberal, is back with a collection of columns gathered from a rich and varied career covering some of the best source material a writer with a knack for whimsy could wish for: politicians. In Who Let the Dogs In, Ivins offers her thoughts on politicos from the Reagan era through the administration of George W. Bush (whom she first nicknamed "Shrub" way back in his early Texas days). While Ivins is of the lefty persuasion, she is far from doctrinaire, which helps separate her from the scores of lockstep pundits on either side: she credits Bill Clinton with being a brilliant politician and condemns the policies of Bush as being terrible for average Americans, but also presents stinging criticisms of Clinton's failed initiatives and defends Bush as being smarter than most give him credit for. Her words are strong, her writing is clear, and her thoughts are well organized. Of course, most people remember a Molly Ivins column for the humor, and we get to witness her firing missiles at low-flying targets like Newt Gingrich and Ross Perot and describing Bush's puzzling lead over Al Gore among men in the 2000 campaign, "One guy played football, went to Vietnam, and is notoriously emotionally distant. The other guy was a cheerleader who got into a National Guard unit through family influence, lost money in the oil business, traded Sammy Sosa and is now sliding through a presidential race on charm. Do I not get American men, or what?" Who Let the Dogs In lacks some of the focus of her Shrub and Bushwhacked simply because it's about a whole generation of political characters as opposed to one memorable Texan, but such broader perspective also affords an opportunity to better understand America's recent history and maybe get a few laughs while doing it. --John Moe

Book Description

The dazzling, inimitable Molly Ivins is back, with her own personal Hall of Fame of America’s most amazing and outlandish politicians–the wicked, the wise, the witty, and the witless–drawn from more than twenty years of reporting on the folks who attempt to run our government (in some cases, into the ground).

Who Let the Dogs In? takes us on a wild ride through two decades of political life, from Ronald Reagan, through Big George and Bill Clinton, to our current top dog, known to Ivins readers simply as Dubya. But those are just a few of the political animals who are honored and skewered for our amusement. Ivins also writes hilariously, perceptively, and at times witheringly of John Ashcroft, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, H. Ross Perot, Tom DeLay, Ann Richards, Al Gore, Jimmy Carter, and the current governor of Texas, who is known as Rick “Goodhair” Perry.
Following close on the heels of her phenomenally successful Bushwhacked and containing an up-to-the-minute Introduction for the campaign season, Who Let the Dogs In? is political writing at its best.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Molly was the best.......2007-06-12

This book is typical of the late Molly Ivins' spirited humor. She came to the college where I taught and delivered a lecture a few years before she died. Every educated person in Kansas City filled the auditorium to capacity--many students had to sit onstage with her. But the educated audience demonstrated appropriate behavior in the face of her pilloring right-wing politicians: they laughed until their tongues came out their noses and they fell out of their chairs. She accomplished a four-year liberal arts education in just over an hour.

4 out of 5 stars If only America had listened to Molly!.......2006-02-07

Using her trademark witty writing, Molly Ivins delivered up another awesome collection of political writings. She was the one who recognized the threat which George W. Bush posed to society long before a majority of the public (including us in the Lone Star State) knew who he was.

Ivins also knows when to criticize her 'friends' making this book so much more than a 'bash Republicans' reader. Loads of credible facts are tucked into her home-spun writing. This to me is the biggest difference between progressives and the far right; we argue on the facts and in reality while they want to mislead the American public into despair using whatever fabrication is most convenient at the moment.

However, I wish this book had (at least some) new material inside or 'extras' given her tremendous insight and foresight into Texas and American politics. Instead, it is only a collection of her past writings, sufficient in most cases but a letdown specifically because we are talking Molly Ivins.

Already owning her books, I subsequently passed on this title to a friend who is also a 'Molly fan' but is on a much tighter-book buying budget. Yet, I still admire that she reminds the world that we Texas liberals are out there!

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious but interesting.......2005-06-18

When it comes to needing a straight shooting Texas liberal who is not afraid of the BIG BAD GOP, look no further than Molly Ivins. Combined with wit and humor, Ivins gives the left out facts about the conservative cronies you won't find on MSNBC, CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, or any other mainstream media outlet. Give this book a read when you need some political humor or are sick and tired of the rightwing fascists in the media and government. The more you know about these dirty conservative elitists, the more you'll think twice before giving them the keys to govern.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and comprehensive.......2005-05-07

Molly Ivins is one of the best political authors and columnists out there today, in my opinion. "Who Let the Dogs In?" is one of the better political books I've read recently. It's interesting and has a lot of information about the key political figures of our time-a must read for anyone interested in our current political scene. I, also, enjoy Molly's humorous touches. She knows her subject and is funny, too.
I did note, however, that the on cover illustration of
George W. Bush as a dog is that of a chihuahua. I thought
Ross Perot was "the chihuahua". Bush should've been done as a pitbull as that would be more in keeping with his stubborn personality. The other illustrations of various political figures as dogs are definitely worth looking at, though.

2 out of 5 stars Bright and funny writer hamstrung by her prejudices.......2005-04-17

Many years ago I enjoyed reading Ivins' columns but unforunately her brand of independent liberalism has turned into just another mainstream media voice parroting the Democrats. Her personal hatred of George Bush has become distracting and embarrasing. Strangely enough she reminds me of Rush Limbaugh. When he began doing political commentary on the radio Limbaugh was an independent with a conservative streak and was comfortable attacking Republicans. Similarly Ivins was originally an independent with a liberal streak who was comfortable attacking Democrats. Now Limbaugh is as firmly ensconced in the Republican camp as Ivins is in the Democratic camp.

What a shame.
