This book provides a good overview of all topics related to Mastiffs. A great book for someone interested in the general history, care requirements, and peculiarities of the mastiff breed. The photos are nice, and this is a fun book to pick up and browse through. Lots of quality information can be found within, yet the breadth of information prevents a truly comprehensive approach. Still, a good value overall!

This book is by far the best. it gives thorough information specifically for mastiffs. it has a place for records and gets down to all the particulars about the breed!
AN EXCELLENT REVIEW OF THE MASTIFF.......2004-04-01
I was really impressed with this book from the very first pages. Although I pretty well know it belongs to a series of well over 250+ books published by Kennel CLub Books,Inc -- this book does not, and I really mean it, does not appear to be a "standard-type-of-book". In fact, the book opens with 30+ pages of well documented history of the breed that are a real MUST to every Mastiff fancier, but this is not all.There are so many interesting old photos and past time's references. Same applies to the Characteristic's chapter -- so informative! If you read carefully the section on Everyday Care (particularly on Feeding & Dietary needs) and that other on Training, you will soon be aware that the book is written by a real EXPERT. I also enjoyed very much the Puppy selection and care section -- very accurate and helpful indeed. Therefore I would like to express my hearfelt thanks to the author and wish she goes on writing more books for this publisher or any other.

Book tells you about the standard, Kind of wished it went more into the history of the breed. It does mention it. Also would of liked more old photos to compare with todays Neos. Over all its a good starter book.

This book is excellent. Everything I would expect from the author and publisher. The pictures are really high quality and give you a great idea of all stages for the Neapolitan Mastiff. The content is just as good and timely. There are many great tips and ideas for any new owner. Unlike many dog breed books, this one deals exclusively with our breed and uses pictures and illustratations of just the Neo. Great Job Carol!!!

This book and its authors have produced a book that lacks good research and provides little insight into the breed's shortcomings. As another reviewer has noted, it even lacks an index. To call this the best book on Mastiffs is a disgrace to the noble breed. I have found at least two others at Amazon that are clearly superior and another I own, that is out-of-print, unfortunately, would leave this book in the kennel. Even the quality of the photographs is poor.
Dated material lacking current relevance........1998-06-26
This book has some nice photos and drawings that may help you learn about the breed, but it lacks updating and warnings about such terrible things as blindness and possible characters faults. It needs an index and sections added on such elements as rescue dog organizations and other important contacts.
Lots of photos of nice dogs, but so what? Why are they champions. Captions are lacking relevant data. For example, world's money making champion dog--not one photo from the movie or why the owner was paid so much.

If you only read one book on the Mastiff, this should be the one. A wonderful presentation of the history, nature & information on owning & raising a Mastiff, from the foremost authority in Mastiffs in the world today.

I suspect this is the book available in a pet store; ninety per cent of it could be written for almost any breed of dog. Didn't read carefully, and guess you could say I got superficially skunked. I wouldn't reccommend this book to my dog for chewing, even.

Good but a lot of the information was too basic for me. Most of this information is available through good reputable breeders. In fact, some information that my breeder prefers is contradictory to this book.
I guess this is a good book for those who don't have a good breeder or mentor.
If you are looking for a serious book that is extremely popular with the top breeders in the country ... buy the DeeDee Anderson book. This is a true mastiff owners book. Admittedly, it may be too detailed and for those looking for fluff.

For being a "paperback book" not quite worth the $28.00 spent. The author's terminology is so over the top in the manner he interprets and attempts to reach the reader. There are sections within the book that the print is very faded and there are no images to view in respect to your reading. Two stars is hard pressed.
The information is "Okay" but not worth the money we received more insight and information from the $12.95 The Mastiff: An Owner's Guide
to a Happy Healthy Pet. It is excellent and is worth your time and money.

Thorough in nature, yet an easy flow of information palatable to anyone wanting to know the truth about the breed. The author is concise, passionate, and well versed on the topic with both decades of companionship and breeding Neos coupled with a Doctorates in Veterinary Sciences. This marriage gives Dr. Allen's book a most comprehensive find on Italian Mastiffs, ranging from breeding, feeding, behaviors, every topic incredibly observed on many levels. Full of exquisite photos of incredibly regal creatures. A must for anyone considering or owning a Neapolitan Mastiff.

Neapolitan Mastiffs are by far my favorite breed and Dr. Allen has done a wonderful job with her very informative book. She cuts to the chase. In doing so, hopefully, the casual/careless buyers will be ware. We don't want any more Neo's in rescue shelters.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to get a Neo. As the book depicts, they are not the dog for everyone. Please re-consider if you are not sure. This book will explain the breed in full detail.
"THE" book for Neopolitan owners........1999-07-22
As an owner, breeder and trainer I absolutely fell in love with the Neo. I have trained for Schutzhund, French Ring, Personal protection, and Handicap assistance. The Neo is one of the most intelligent animals I have ever worked with, but they are not for everyone. Dr. Allen tells it like it is and is up front and honest about the breed. I disagree with some minor points, but the book is 99% accurate. Read this before you fall in love with and buy your first puppy and you may save yourself heartbreak down the line.

Words cannot explain how great this book is. It goes back and tells you about the great Mastiffs of the past, how they were bred, and how modern Mastiffs came to be. The photos alone are a marvel. This is a treasure that never should have been put out of print. It is the kind of book that Mastiff lovers and breeders will be reading forever.

This may be a good book for someone that knows nothing about the breed and doesn't want to make much of a financial investment to learn some of the basics in order to determine if they want to pursue it further. It appears to me that the first section of the book is the only part directly related to mastiffs. I could be wrong, but after the first section every comment focuses on "your new puppy" and doesn't specify the breed. It tells you general health concerns that a new "parent" should be aware of no matter what breed the puppy is. A much better book (in my opinion)that is in the same price range would be "Mastiffs: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual," by Kim Thornton. It's a "Barron's" book. This book at least alerts potential owners of health concerns SPECIFIC to the mastiff breed so that new "parents" know what to watch for.
