Customer Reviews:
Excellent book if you want to know it all!.......2007-10-08
Packed full of easy to understand information. Not only does it answer all of your questions for animal care but lots of it pertains to humans as well! I highly recommend this book!
A great book for pet owners.......2007-10-05
This is a very useful book for dog owners, especially people who have never had pets before. The doctor offers many suggestions for natural remedies for health problems with your pet.
Medicinal Use.......2007-09-13
I found this book very informative and useful when searching for holistic ingredients and supplements for my dog who has Addison's Disease. There are not many books out there that are user friendly with this disease, but this book made it very simple with highlighted notes and page reference numbers for other suggestions. I really liked the fact that this book had a list and explanation of all ingredients found in typical dog food products. The herbal remedies where a wonderful addition to my research and the book gave me definitions to all the products that were mentioned. Great book overall, and I would recommend it to anyone that is searching for holistic remedies for their pets or just for herbal and product information.
A wealth of information.......2007-06-27
First I would like to say I have never met Dr. Shawn and am writing
this because I am so pleased with his book. With the recent food scare
I was looking for a reliable source for a homemade food recipe. I live
in Dallas which is near where Dr. Shawn practices. He has written
articles for The Dallas Morning News and I've heard people speak
favorably of him on more than one occasion. I'm new to holistic care
and was a bit skeptical thinking I would be admonished for using
conventional medical care and products. This has not the case with his
book at all. Much of the information is just that, information for you
to make better choices for your pet. It is very well written and packed
with good information on supplements, herb, diet etc. I love this book
and have even learned that there are probably some supplements that I
could add to my diet. I would encourage everyone to buy this book as
it is so easy to read, well formatted, and full of information that
will help me give my dog the healthcare he deserves.

One of the best resources.......2007-06-17
This book is really useful for learning the uses and effects of different herbs and supplements. One of the best things about this book is how it's organized. One section lists ailments, each one with a description, treatment options, and listing of natural remedies. A second section lists all the natural remedies, what they can be used to treat, and how they work. I didn't find the nutrition section very useful, but I would definitely recommend the book for it's extensive ailment and remedy listings.
Book Description
In this follow-up to his first book, "Considering the Horse," Mark Rashid continues to share his gift for using communication, not force, in working with horses. Rashid uses heart-warming and humorous stories to share his techniques of teaching horses by understanding their view of the world. These tales deal with many facets of buying, owning, and training horses. Stories of Arabs, appaloosas, and paintsmistrusted and mistreated because of their breedwill give you a new perspective on these breeds and others. Rashid's accounts of horses bound for slaughter because they couldn't be trained will inspire you to give your own problem horse another look. And when Wil, the ugliest horse you can imagine, turns out to be the best on the ranch, you'll understand why a good horse is never a bad color.

Horse Salvation.......2007-09-04
It is hard to find people in my local horse world who don't believe that a firm hand (or boot) is the way to train horses. It was very refreshing to read about Rashid's successful training without physical abuse. I've been using many of his ideas to work with my donkey and have been so proud of the results. Thank you Mark Rashid!
I've bought this book three times!.......2007-08-28
Mark Rashid is amazing. Can't say enough about his books, ideas and training methods. I've been a horse owner for over 25 years, yet Mark has a way of teaching that still leaves me saying "ahh-HA! I never thought about that!!!". Mark's inspiring books have kept me trying with a Mustang I purchased that everyone else gave up on. If it weren't for Mark, I don't know where my horse would be today. I've purchased this book three times and given away two copies to friends that are also horse owners. Read Mark's books - get inspired - get enthused - and build a better relationship with your horse through understanding the "try". Thanks Mark, for putting things in perspective.
A Life Lesson In This Book.......2007-04-07
You know how Dr. Phil is always teaching his life lessons? This book does the same, but in a different sense. I have always wondered why certain people and animals were brought into my life. This book gave me an answer to that question. I have never had a person readily available to teach me anything about horses, what I have learned has been self taught. Simply from observing and from trial and error. Mark Rashid, shares wisdom from those who have taught him and the way that he gets this across is extraordinary! If you are looking for step by step instruction, this most likely won't fit the bill. However, this book is a learning experience that is interesting to read for once! I can't see how someone could be disappointed. In addition, this book is suitable for anyone, no matter their age. Read it to your kids! They will love it too!
Great Book.......2006-11-09
This bbook is a lot of fun to read. It really gives you some good insights into handling horses and what a good trainer does. If you have horses, want horses or just ike horses then I recommend this book.
Hokey stories starring an unbecomingly self-satisfied author.......2006-06-15
There are two things that make this book a surprising disappointment. One may not be a problem for everyone, though I find it annoying and unattractive, ie, the repetitive and slightly self-important harping on 'giving a breed a chance' and 'being gentle.' For some, that makes it a crossover, feel-good book with links to human relationships. For me, PW got it right with this line: "reiterates these two themes ad nauseam, illustrating them in long-winded and meandering anecdotes."
But the other problem is that it's very poorly written. Rashid, who probably has a thousand great stories, needed a good editor who could have cleaned up and sharpened his material.

Herbs for pets.......2005-10-10
An excellent source of easy to read information for a beginning herbalist.
Great herb book, but . . ........2005-09-26
Very thorough description of the different herbs and their uses, but the book is organized by herb. It would be much more helpful if it were organized by malady, and then listed which herbs would help.
Herbs for Pets-One of the Best.......2005-08-14
This is one of the most comprehensive books on this subject that I think I've ever seen. I had been looking for specific information for about a year, and this book had the answer for me. Great read, well organized, and extremely interesting. Worth every penny I paid for it!! I'll use it for my pets generations for years.

Very informative but..........2005-08-12
This book has been a great resource and I love it but there are a few issues that I had when I tried to find the references that he had in the back (web pages only). Since the book was published it seems that his personal web site which he refers to in the first couple pages does not exist anymore as well as a few of the other web sites that he posted. Also I came across a couple of addresses that were totally incorrect. It made me a little bit nervious so I got online to see if I could find anyone to report this too but was unable to find anything recent pertaining to the author. I did however find a few sites that cited him in their own editorials and in those sites I found conflicting information to what I had read in the book. In my college years I learned not to trust the internet as a very high resource in most cases but when there is a significant amount of conflicting information usually this suggests something isn't quite right.
Again I want to make perfectly clear that this is a very informative book but also I would defentally recommend finding another book that is of the same or similar topic and read that as well. Also consult a holistic vet if you have any questions! I have actually found that some of the things I have read I have actually started applying to my own life and the book was just an all around good reminder of good heath for both my dog and myself! It is also very possible being that the internet is a "living, growing, every changing" device that these web sites have just dissapeared since the book was written or changed addresses to something more appropiate than what was previously being used.
GREAT beginning book on holistic dog care.......2002-02-28
I'm really excited to try some of the stuff in this book! Which says something. I run an herb shop, and have read *lots * of herb books, but am just getting in to using herbs for my pets. This is a great book to get started on this info. I've got several pages bookmarked and am going to use the info on a daily basis, I can tell......overall, a good beginning book, highly recommended. Easy to read and full of good quality information.
A must for all dog lovers!!.......2000-10-26
Dr. Kidd's book gave me the information that I needed to make informed decisions about my dog's care and treatment. He has a practical approach and an understanding of what the concerned owner needs to know and what I can do - PLUS - he includes stories to illustrate his points - and, it's fun to read. This is a MUST HAVE book for all dog owners!!!
