In this splendid retelling of the biblical story of Hosea, bestselling author Francine Rivers pens a heartbreaking romance between a prostitute and the upright and kind farmer who marries her; the story also functions as a reminder of God's unconditional love for his people. Redeeming Love opens with the Gold Rush of 1850 and its rough-and-tumble atmosphere of greed and desire. Angel, who was sold into prostitution as a child, has learned to distrust all men, who see her only as a way to satisfy their lust. When the virtuous and spiritual-minded Michael Hosea is told by God to marry this "soiled dove," he obeys, despite his misgivings. As Angel learns to love him, she begins to hope again but is soon overwhelmed by fear and returns to her old life. Rivers shines in her ability to weave together spiritual themes and sexual tension in a well-told story, a talent that has propelled her into the spotlight as one of the most popular novelists in the genre of Christian fiction. This is one of her best. --Cindy Crosby

California’s gold country, 1850. A time when men sold their souls for a bag of gold and women sold their bodies for a place to sleep.
Angel expects nothing from men but betrayal. Sold into prostitution as a child, she survives by keeping her hatred alive. And what she hates most are the men who use her, leaving her empty and dead inside.
Then she meets Michael Hosea.
A man who seeks his Father’s heart in everything, Michael Hosea obeys God’s call to marry Angel and to love her unconditionally. Slowly, day by day, he defies Angel’s every bitter expectation until, despite her resistance her frozen heart begins to thaw. But with her unexpected softening come overwhelming feelings of unworthiness and fear. And so Angel runs. Back to the darkness, away from her husband’s pursuing love, terrified of the truth she can no longer deny: Her final healing must come from the One who loves her even more than Michael Hosea does…the One who will never let her go.
A powerful retelling of the book of Hosea, Redeeming Love is a life-changing story of God’s unconditional, redemptive, all-consuming love.
Story Behind the Book
“Writing Redeeming Love was a form of worship for me. Through it, I was able to thank God for loving me even when I was defiant, rebellious, contemptuous of what I thought being a Christian meant, and afraid to give my heart away. I had wanted to be my own god and have control of my life the way Eve did in the Garden of Eden. Now I know to be loved by Christ is the ultimate joy and fulfillment. Everything in Redeeming Love was a gift from the Lord: plot, characters, theme. None of it is mine to claim.”

OUTSTANDING.......2007-10-11
OUTSTANDING!!!!!! (with the exception of the BIBLE) THIS IS THE BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE THAT CAN READ. THANK YOU FRANCINE RIVERS AND MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS YOU IN EVERYTHING YOU DO.
Captivating, Interesting, Emotional.......2007-10-08
This is one of my most favorite books. This is the first book I read by Francine Rivers and thought it was wonderful! Our church ladies summer reading group chose it so that's how I came to read it. It's a western story that portrays God's forgiveness and love for us like the book of Hosea in the Bible upon which this story is loosely based. It gives insight into prostitution and sparks some interesting discussion. The main character, Angel, starts out as a beautiful little girl who gets sold into prostitution with no decent role models and doesn't see real love until she meets Michael Hosea who decides to marry her and take her out of the brothel no matter what. Her life is mostly down, but has ups when she's with him, but she feels so unworthy. Eventually, she learns to trust Michael and more importantly, God, who changes her life. Although it is fiction, the characters are well developed and seem very real. I found myself pulling for Angel all through the book, in spite of her poor decisions. Although some parts are very depressing, it has an amazing ending the left me feeling happy. I even picked up a new prayer idea from this book. This book covers a wide spectrum from cruel and depressing to wonderful and joyful, even though it didn't end like I thought it would. I highly recommend this book!
Ghastly!.......2007-10-01
After reading all the reviews, I just had to get this book. After all, everyone just has the most glowing things to say about it. I am agog. This is just a terrible book. The characters aren't interesting and there is nothing challenging about it. Obviously, I am just not getting why everyone loves this book so much, but the writing is average, the characters forgettable and completely boring. I simply do not understand why this book had garnered so much praise! Ugh!
Redeeming Love-Fiction.......2007-10-01
Fantastic Christian book that has several lessons and even has topics for discussion. The book made a terrific "Just Because" gift for friends.
Best Book Ever.......2007-09-29
this is the best book I have ever read, I sent it to all my girlfriends and women family members.
Book Description
The Developer's Guide to Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 teaches developers how to build solutions that leverage the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS v3) platform. Many developers are not yet familiar with this platform and its capabilities, so the fi rst few chapters focus on the out-of-the-box experience and how to secure solutions built on top of it. From there, the book explores some of the key aspects of the WSS v3 platform and how to leverage them for building applications. Throughout the book, practical programming solutions using real-world examples are used to illustrate the possibilities of SharePoint and to teach developers how to build their own applications. Some application components covered include Features, Site Defi nitions, Web Services, Web Parts, Events, and Workflows. The book also teaches how to migrate from 2.0 to 3.0 and to work with the object model and built-in WSS Web Services in various settings. Developers who want to usurp the fundamental capabilities of WSS v3 rather than building those facilities themselves will fi nd everything they need. The book doesn't attempt to cover the capabilities of Microsoft Offi ce Server System 2007 (MOSS), but MOSS is based entirely on WSS v3 so all the examples found in this book can also be used in that environment too. In fact, everything covered in this book equally applies to WSS v3 and MOSS. While this book attempts to bring developers from the ground up, any Web-based .NET programming experience will prove helpful in understanding the concepts presented within. The C# language is used exclusively in the text but there are comparable VB.NET code listings on the CD-ROM.

Not my kind of book.......2007-07-23
I would recommend "Inside Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 " instead of this book. That book feels more upto date with the subject.
Great Development book from Bleeker.......2007-06-23
Todd Bleeker is enthusiastic about SharePoint, and it shows. This book is a great resource for people wanting to get up to speed with programming in SharePoint 2007. Todd gives a lot of examples and lots of background on the subject covered. I'm not a developer and I could understand the book and was able to follow along and even use some of the examples.
If you want to get your feet wet with SharePoint programming, you can't go wrong with this book.
Good resource for beginner, but many typos error!.......2007-05-07
For WSS v3, the new version of SharePoint product, it's not easy to find a good book. Yes, you can download the SDK. But somehow it's not a good start point for beginners! This book was the first one did a good job on providing guidance for the beginners of WSS developers. Even over, it show us many different aspect of programming for WSS, such as Event Receiver, Custom Field Type, and Web Part.
But this book contain many typos error! The publisher did introduced many error!? Very often, you must go to the CD to find the correct code or Fig.
But I still recommend this book. Very valueable! True.
Not impressed.......2007-04-25
I have read more than half of the book and am very disappointed with the content. He spends far too much time explaining how things were done in SharePoint Services v2 and then how they are different in v3. I was hoping for more information about how to do things in SharePoint v3 but there is not enough meat to actually get in and do anything.
SharePoint Developer's Guide.......2007-04-14
This book is the best resource I've found for SharePoint development. It has 3 chapters dedicated to Web Part development for which I am grateful. Sometimes the turorials don't match up to the IDE but I have been able to figure out what I need to do.
It is apparent that this book was put out to market before it was truly ready, yet I am grateful that it exists imperfectly or I wouldn't have any good resource for developing with SharePoint.
The author provides a website to address erata including a forum which he responds to at times. The website has helped me get over some tutorial problems mentioned above.
The book is definitely worth the money; the examples have saved me considerable pain and frustration.
Book Description
The first kiss occurred in a dimly lit hallway on the upper floor of Elwin Hastings's grand house. Louisa never saw it coming....
Of course, Anthony Stalbridge couldn't possibly have had romantic intentions. The kiss was an act of desperation meant to distract the armed guard from catching the pair in a place they did not belong. After all, Louisa Bryce, in her dull maroon gown and gold-rimmed spectacles, was no man's idea of an alluring female. The only thing the two interlopers have in common is a passionate interest in the private affairs of Mr. Hastings-a prominent member of Society whom they both suspect of hiding terrible secrets. Now, brought together by their ruse, Anthony and Louisa are united in their efforts to find the truth.
Each has a reason for the quest. Anthony's fiance was said to have thrown herself into the Thames-but Anthony has his own suspicions. Louisa-whose own identity is shrouded in layers of mystery-is convinced that Hastings has a connection to a notorious brothel. When Anthony successfully cracks Hastings's hidden safe-and discovers incriminating evidence-it appears that both their instincts were correct.
Yet Hastings is hiding far more than jewels and ledger books. Bringing him to justice will be more perilous than they anticipate-and their partnership will be more heated than either one expects. For it is not only Anthony's curiosity that Louisa arouses, and the two share something else: a thrilling attraction to danger. . . .
From the triple-threat author who also hits bestseller lists under the names Jayne Ann Krentz and Jayne Castle, this is a delightful new romp filled with suspense and wit-and the steamy Victorian passion her devoted readers love.

Lies and deception.......2007-10-10
ouisa is hiding in plain sight as a dowdy widow. Her past is something that she's ashamed of and she holds out little hope for a happy future. Anthony Stalbridge is interested in her and their first real encounter is when he kisses her outside Elwin Hastings' bedroom while they're both attending a ball.
His reasons for being there are different to hers. She's investigating for a scandal sheet, while he's trying to find out whether his fiancee's death was truly a suicide. Both of them have an interest in Mr Hastings and they propose to join forces to bring him to justice.
With a lot of twists and turns this story brings the two characters together and is quite an amusing read. I enjoyed it immensely and look forward to more of the same.
Lots of Suspense and a wonderful story woven by Amanda .......2007-09-20
Set in the late Victorian era of England, this is a charming romance with a dose of a compelling tale of mystery to boot. The reader will find that the characters are well-developed and realistic. There is humor which I always appreciate and some of the supporting characters actually made me think of someone that I had known over the years. As the story moves along in this enticing story of society's upper-class that is cloaked in dark secrets that are tied to the Thames River, hence the title: The River Knows.
The novel has the main character Louisa Bryce, the journalist, and then there's the wealthy Anthony Stalbridge that is seeking answers to his fiancé Fiona drowning that has been ruled a suicide. These two connect and fall in love. I'll stop here.
As the story moves along in this enticing story of society's upper-class that is cloaked in dark secrets that are tied to the Thames River, hence the title: The River Knows, the reader will find that this tale has plenty of action and a number of surprises.
If you're a Quick fan, I'm sure you will enjoy this novel, it's got all the typical plots and characters that you have come to know and appreciate. If you haven't read any of Quick's books this is an excellent introduction to her writing skills.
Engaging light romance.......2007-09-03
Louisa Bryce was never the life of the party. Supposedly a distant relative of the respectable Lady Ashton, Louisa stays invisible by being dowdy--and serves as an investigative reporter, reporting on scandals in 'society' in Victorian England. She's hot on the trail of a rumor that a respected gentleman is actually part owner of a notorious brothel when she runs into someone else investigating--a man who just might be a jewel thief. She and Anthony Stalbridge form an alliance--they'll pool their knowledge to learn the secrets that both of them need.
What starts out as strictly a business arrangement takes a turn toward the sensual when Louisa and Anthony are forced to rely on an ancient device to escape detection--they pretend to be lovers, kissing. But pretend kissing has a way of turning into real kissing. Unfortunately, Louisa has a secret that she knows will ever keep her from finding love and marriage--and everyone knows an illicit relationship can only lead to an unhappy ending.
Although Louisa is certain their relationship is doomed, the investigation goes well. Louisa's evidence is only the beginning of the evils Mr. Hastings has undertaken. He's certainly conducting blackmail. Could he also be guilty of murder--including, perhaps, the murder of Anthony's ex-fiancee?
Author Amanda Quick writes an engaging story with a light touch. Neither Louisa nor Anthony is a particularly complicated character, but their clever dialogue, the cute misunderstandings, and a nice mystery with just enough twists to keep the reader involved add up to an enjoyable novel. THE RIVER KNOWS is summer-beach reading, but it doesn't pretend to be anything more than that and we all need a nice desert from time to time.
A "Quick" Read.......2007-08-21
OK, sorry but I just HAD to write that! Now seriously, this is a fun romp with yes, a few bumps along the way, but altogether quite a pleasant read. You have the plucky heroine who is not afraid to investigate and the brooding hero. I will say that the male character was not as interesting as Ms. Quick usually creates but I'm willing to over look that minor inconvenience. If you typically enjoy Amanda Quick novels, you will enjoy this one. And I promise, no more puns!
Illogical and Recycled.......2007-08-21
As a long time Amanda Quick fan, I wanted to like this book but was horribly disappointed. As other reviewers have said the slow moving, improbable plot dragged until the last several chapters when everything was hurriedly tied up with a neat little bow. The characters were one dimensional, poorly developed and lacked any sort of chemistry. I also feel that neither the hero nor the heroine were especially bright. The "widow" is still a virgin? No problem. A fashionably dressed woman in black is stalking you while you are investigating a murder? Must be a hooker accidentally in the wrong neighborhood. You killed someone and faked your own death? Let's not even talk about and jump straight to the bit were we live happily ever after with my kooky yet lovable family, who hardly knows you but thinks you're wonderful anyway. Several scenes and supporting characters seemed to be lifted straight out of earlier books. All in all, this book was a waste of the time I spent hoping it would get better. I am glad I got it from the library instead of wasting the money on a hardcover as well. If you must read this book, I suggest you do the same.
Book Description
At once an incredible adventure narrative and a penetrating biographical portrait, The River of Doubt is the true story of Theodore Roosevelt’s harrowing exploration of one of the most dangerous rivers on earth.
The River of Doubt—it is a black, uncharted tributary of the Amazon that snakes through one of the most treacherous jungles in the world. Indians armed with poison-tipped arrows haunt its shadows; piranhas glide through its waters; boulder-strewn rapids turn the river into a roiling cauldron.
After his humiliating election defeat in 1912, Roosevelt set his sights on the most punishing physical challenge he could find, the first descent of an unmapped, rapids-choked tributary of the Amazon. Together with his son Kermit and Brazil’s most famous explorer, Cândido Mariano da Silva Rondon, Roosevelt accomplished a feat so great that many at the time refused to believe it. In the process, he changed the map of the western hemisphere forever.
Along the way, Roosevelt and his men faced an unbelievable series of hardships, losing their canoes and supplies to punishing whitewater rapids, and enduring starvation, Indian attack, disease, drowning, and a murder within their own ranks. Three men died, and Roosevelt was brought to the brink of suicide. The River of Doubt brings alive these extraordinary events in a powerful nonfiction narrative thriller that happens to feature one of the most famous Americans who ever lived.
From the soaring beauty of the Amazon rain forest to the darkest night of Theodore Roosevelt’s life, here is Candice Millard’s dazzling debut.

river of doubt.......2007-10-06
This book was great, if you like adventure, exploration, or teddy roosevelt this is the book for you.
not boaring at all this book is awsome
A Gripping Tale of Men of Character.......2007-09-21
Oh, for a President who had even one tenth of the character and integrity of the Teddy Roosevelt portrayed in this book. This is a real-life version of Conrad's Heart of Darkness, but the central figure never loses his sense of dedication and honor. Although there is plenty of suspense, even horror, in the story, I found it to be ultimately quite inspiring.
Awesome.......2007-09-20
This book went into so much detail about TR's expedition in Brazil that is hardly mentioned in other books on his life. And what a story it is! I heartily recommend it to anyone.
They Don't Make Presidents Like this Anymore..........2007-09-20
And that's not a statement of partisan politics, but it does say a lot about leadership. Volumes have been written about Theodore Roosevelt, the soldier, the statesman, the adventurer, and the president, but if there is a single book that captures the vitality, the determination, and the indomitable spirit of this great American, it is "The River of Doubt." Former National Geographic writer and editor Candice Miller pulls no punches and leaves no stone unturned in spinning this vibrant and suspense-packed tale of risk and discovery cutting through the heart of the Amazonian jungle on an uncharted Brazilian river. Miller brings the Amazon to life in all its bloody glory, an unfathomably dangerous place where even the frogs are deadly, where schools of piranhas can turn an ox - or a man - to a skeleton in minutes, a place where, despite caymans and poison dart-wielding natives, it is the insects - insects of all types and descriptions - that pose the greatest risk.
This is an epic journey facing not only the challenges of a wild river cascading over rapids and waterfalls through an impenetrable jungle, but also treachery and even murder. Roosevelt and expedition co-lead Candido Mariano da Silva Rondon, an officer of the Brazilian military and renowned Amazon explorer, find themselves surprisingly ill-equipped for their voyage through one of the planets most inhospitable regions, and ironically are soon near starvation in a green hell that while teaming with life, food is stubbornly unattainable. Meanwhile, it is a poignant tale of the bond between father and son, as Roosevelt and second son Kermit alternately sacrifice and suffer for each other while proudly denying emotion. This is one of those stories that, after weeks of terror, when Roosevelt and the tattered remains of his party emerge feverish from malaria and near starvation, you'll ask, "why haven't I heard about this before now."
Were this fiction, it would strain the bounds of credibility. But that this is the story of a former President of the United States is truly staggering. A remarkable achievement, "The River of Doubt" is a must read, illuminating a fascinating slice of world history in the twilight of the age of exploration while providing an intimate peak into the unparalleled character of Theodore Roosevelt. Bully!
Real-life adventure.......2007-09-20
River of Doubt is a cominbation of very interesting history and great adventure. This is the first book I have read about TR and as a result I plan to read more. Candice Millard does an outstanding job of presenting a grand adventure, while at the same time, letting you into the personal and interesting lives of the explorers. Ms. Millard has renewed my interest in historical books.

Amazing story!.......2007-10-07
An amazing story that brings you back to the foundation of your faith, as they did for me. I laughed, cried, and rejoiced with the characters as they went through their trials and tribulations. Kudos to Francine Rivers for bringing a remarkable story for generations to come!
an insight into 1st century Christians.......2007-08-27
This series was so great. Not only does it keep your attention in an entertaining way but it makes you think more about what it was like for 1st century Christians.
Great christian fiction........2007-08-24
Didn't get a lot done while reading this book, couldn't put it down. The story draws you in and you also learn alot about this time, the Roman Empire and the plight of their conquered peoples. Can be a little gruesome in parts. Highly recommend.
for reading and re-reading - books that keep on giving.......2007-08-09
Francine Rivers' "Mark of the Lion" series provides believable plots; well-crafted, fully-human characters; satisfying love stories; and practical instruction in Christian living. These books are fun to read, but they go beyond that to provide a deep satisfaction that you can't get from mere entertainment. Also delightful are her polished writing and her attention to historical details. Her careful craftsmanship delights the heart AND the mind. History buffs, romance readers, and students of practical Christian living should all enjoy these books.
Excellent novels.......2007-08-09
These books have really spoken to me. Ms. Rivers has done her homework when it comes to historical accuracy, even printing a glossary of terms in the back of the book. The story lines and characters are outstanding, and beautifully illustrate the story of God's love for us.

A health spa complete with tofu turkey and "Dress for Sexcess" lectures is the last place school psychologist Skye Denison wants to spend Thanksgiving. But when her best friend Trixie Frayne convinces her to take a complimentary weekend at the new Scumble River Spa, Skye accepts her fate and prepares to be slathered, wrapped, and roasted-until a murder ruins the good time.

very good!.......2007-07-01
this was really good and you are left with wondering what is going on in the heroines life, very good mystery. the "redraggers" are always amusing.
First time reader of Scumble River Mysteries.......2007-06-11
I found the story delightful. It is one of the "cozy" murder mysteries, and those are the type I enjoy. I thought the plot was well thought out and I was surprised by the ending. As my first Scumble River Mysteries, I am happy to say I'd read another.
Mud and murder at a local spa.......2007-05-19
Skye Denison is planning on having a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with her family in Scumble River, Illinois, but her best friend, Trixie, has other ideas. Trixie convinces Skye that they should accept a free weekend at the newly-opened Scumble River Spa, and try to find treasure which is reputedly buried in the backyard of the old, converted mansion. Skye has her doubts, but soon she finds herself at the spa, wrapped in seaweed and eating tiny portions of inedible food. Soon a murder takes place in the mud bath, and Skye is knee-deep in the investigation. She is also caught between her current boyfriend, Wally, and her ex-boyfriend, Simon, and
her mother and Simon's mother come to the spa to help convince her to return to her old love interest.
According to her biography, author Denise Swanson was a school psychologist for 22 years, so her references to Skye's experiences in the same job always ring true. This book is a welcome addition to an enjoyable series.
A good book to take to the airport or doc's office.......2007-05-18
Okay, the opening scene would have your seatmates in either place scowling at you, but it's probably one of the funniest scenes I've ever read--including the Janet Evanovich. Clearly, a lot of work's gone into developing Scumble River and its people. This is my first in the series and if I need a good fast fun read, I'm going to definitely check more out.
Good read.......2007-05-17
This is another good edition to the Scumble River series. I enjoyed the plot line and the characters. The ending did have a twist I wasn't expecting. Skye and Wally make a good couple and I hope they stay together.
Customer Reviews:
You just don't get it.......2007-09-11
I read all the bad reviews and this is my answer to them. Why should I care about these characters? Because these characters are you and all the people in your boring insignificant life, why should we care about you?
Why is the book so long? Why is life so long? Because it is...
The essential lesson that I felt Steibeck was trying to hit home through all his meandering is that life essentially is everything, it is right, wrong, predetermined, self determined, selfish and selfless. Everything has reason and absolutely no reason at all. It makes no sense but its your job as a human to be a good person and try to go beyond the circumstances that life presents you. The only destiny you have is the one you make and he couldn't just say that because that's not how people learn. People learn by doing messed up and evil things or great good things and that's just it. Steinbeck is explaining the purpose of life in this book, maybe you should give it another go.
East of Eden.......2007-09-02
Simply put, this book is a masterpiece and is my all-time favorite book. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
A Joy to Read.......2007-08-28
I have never felt the need to review a book before, but I just finished reading East of Eden for the second time. I read quickly, but this time I read slowly and savored every page. As a long-time resident of Monterey County, I am touched by the poetic descriptions of places locals take for granted. The Salinas River which runs underground in summer made a dry river bed into a lyrical image that I have never lost. The beauty of the conversations between Samuel Hamilton and Lee, the sadness of the anecdotal stories that claim only a page or two, and the history of the area combine with the larger story seamlessly. Steinbeck didn't just write -- he conjured full-blown images that stay with me long after I put the book down.
"greatest book ever".......2007-08-23
I actually bought this for my wife. She reads every night before going to sleep and according to her this is the best book she has ever read. She commented on the writing as being very desciptive and making her feel like she was there. "A very satifying read"
Steinbeck Rocks.......2007-08-04
I just finished this book a week ago! What an amazing story as told by an amazing author.
I tend not to provide a synopsis of the book in my reviews and I will continue that trend in this review. I will say that East of Eden is basically a grand morality play using the Biblical Story of Cain and Abel as its backdrop.
As in Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck throws in chapters that are very omniscient in scope, some might even say Biblical in tone. It is in one of these chapters that Steinbeck basically asks the reader to make a choice between good and evil in his or her life. I had to stop reading at that point and just think for a little while....that is the sign of a great author at the top of his game!
Highly recommended!!!

Difficult to Read.......2003-11-04
Well there is no doubt that this book contains a large amount of information, it CANNOT be used as an introductory text. It is much to difficult to comprehend, and Wetzel makes absolutely no effort to teach the concepts. Here merely presents a synthesis of limnological research.
Good as a Limnology Primer.......2000-01-30
This is an excellent general reference text. Can not say enough about the excellent content of this text. But it is need of an edition update with information for lake mapping and restoration. Dr. C.L. Nelson of St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud, MN has an excellent small text on physical limnology for the mapping aspect. This book does do an excellent job on the biological aspects of limnological work.
My view of the Wetzel's limnology book.......2000-01-30
The book contains a lot of information related to lakes. It's a complete work about the conditions on this systems. Include a study about the performance of the ionic particles in this systems. It's a suitable book for students like me, to understand the freshwater ecology.

Gritty, riveting, and very well done.......2007-08-20
"If you read all the poker books and become a technical expert on which hands to play and how to play them, you are still likely to end up broke."
If you just want a book on how to play poker, keep looking; there are lots of those. Although this book has play lessons and elaborate mathematical charts, it's more about the life of a pro. I recommend it for everyone with or without professional aspirations. This started out as part of Doyle Brunson's book, but it became a book in itself.
BG discusses cheaters (and he names names! and casinos), deadbeats, critics, his own life and ethos, who to tip and why (that was a real eye-opener!), sex and how it can affect one's game, superstition, tournament strategy, and much more. There is poker etiquette I had not read elsewhere, such as how to win gracefully, and why it's important.
It is illustrated with COLOR plates (how's that for a switch?). It's chock full of color photos of famous players and casinos, like a scrap book. It has an index, plus a separate index for the photos so you can see who's in them.
One caveat: My worst poker days (in terms of losses) started with me reading from this. Every time. Superstition? No, but for whatever reason it put me in the wrong frame of mind to play. (I found it a bit depressing in places.) After a few of those, I would only read it on days I did not play.
A collection of random thoughts.......2007-07-16
I bought this after having read the works of Harrington, Gordon, Sklansky, Brunson, etc. This book is a mixture of Greenstein's thoughts on the poker society in general and some strategy examples. My impression of the book is that it just seems to be a series of random thoughts by the author and that it was not very comprehensive. Each chapter is fairly short and the book is full of color photos that serve as filler material and don't add any value (no captions on the pictures). A couple of points I did like were the points Greenstein made about buying in for the minimum instead of maximum in cash games and his theory to accumulate chips early in tournaments (instead of playing tight early as many others advocate). I would only recommend this as an addition to a comprehensive poker library and not as an early read (it is subtitled as an advanced poker guide).
nothing good.......2007-07-09
I have 7 poker books. This one is by far the worst! No good tips, no insight, no strategy. Greenstein rambling on about his career. And it is huge in size and doesnt fit on my bookshelf with all my other books. What a waste.
One of the best.......2007-06-20
The title says it all. This is one of the best poker guides I've read so far. Barry points out and makes you think about things that you really can't put to words. It helped me a lot.
easy read.......2007-05-12
Interestingly enough after reading this book I did not win any of the poker tournaments I played in. Which is sad really, with the high expectation of implementing all of my new tools for no limit poker. But that really was not what the book was meant to do and I am glad because that is what every other poker book I read was trying to do. What Greenstein does and what makes this book so powerful is that he gives a solid foundation for a serious poker player to follow not just at the tables but also with the social scene, family life, and financial side of playing the game.
If you are looking for a get rich quick guide to no limit hold em, you should go read Helmuths book (chances are you will go broke you Jackal). If you want a guide into the world of poker that will explain how to handle almost every aspect of the game then Barry is your man.
Oh and the pictures are cool too!

The author of There Are No Children Here follows up that magnificent effort with the gripping story of a mysterious death in southwest Michigan. A black teenager surfaces in the St. Joseph River, drowned. How did he get there? The towns of Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, divided by both race and the river, grapple with the possibilities in this maddeningly difficult case. Alex Kotlowitz puts his sharp reporting skills to good work here, describing in detail everything that is known about Eric McGinnis's short life and untimely death. But the book is best at plumbing the racial psychology of these mutually suspicious communities. The Other Side of the River has that can't-put-it-down quality found in the best narrative nonfiction, and it speaks to issues affecting all of America.
Book Description
Alex Kotlowitz's There Are No Children Here was more than a bestseller; it was a national event. His beautifully narrated, heartbreaking nonfiction account of two black boys struggling to grow up in a Chicago public housing complex spent eight weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, was a made-for-television movie starring and produced by Oprah Winfrey, won many distinguished awards, and sparked a continuing national debate on the lives of inner-city children.
In The Other Side of the River, his eagerly awaited new book, Kotlowitz takes us to southern Michigan. Here, separated by the St. Joseph River, are two towns, St. Joseph and Benton Harbor. Geographically close, they are worlds apart, a living metaphor for America's racial divisions: St. Joseph is a prosperous lakeshore community and ninety-five percent white, while Benton Harbor is impoverished and ninety-two percent black. When the body of a black teenaged boy from Benton Harbor is found in the river, unhealed wounds and suspicions between the two towns' populations surface as well. The investigation into the young man's death becomes, inevitably, a screen on which each town projects their resentments and fears.
The Other Side of the River sensitively portrays the lives and hopes of the towns' citizens as they wrestle with this mystery--and reveals the attitudes and misperceptions that undermine race relations throughout America. In this gripping and ultimately profound book, Alex Kotlowitz proves why he is one of this country's foremost writers on the ever explosive issue of race.
From the Hardcover edition.

read in one night! a real page turner.......2007-04-30
Here's the thing - you know who died, and you know where the body was found and in what condition, but you don't know the why and how. And you still can't put this book down!
Alex Kotlowitz is a master story teller of a real life murder in a racially charged small town, geographically divided by a river but racially divided by mistrust and suspicion. His research is detailed and thorough, and the reader finds himself quickly immersed and emotionally invovled with the characters. Every character is complex and likeable. There are no bad guys/good guys. Just an unsolved murder, in a town yearning to heal.
Sometimes the truth is difficult to take.......2007-02-19
This was an excellent book--painful to read in some places, but important when it comes to understanding the role of racism and race relations in this country. I find it interesting to read the comments from some of the residents of St. Joe's who claim that their town was misrepresented. My sense is that many simply found their deeply entrenched bigoted attitudes and racism difficult to take when detailed in print for the world to read. Perhaps they should spend less time defending the indefensible and more on changing the fabric of their town and its relationship with their neighbors across the bridge.
Not as good as I expected..........2006-05-26
Alex's last book There Are No Children Here is hard to top, but I tried to give The Other Side of the River a chance. What was the point of the book? To show the different levels of racial tensions within this particular community or to find out who killed the teenager? I am still trying to understand the purpose of the book. I felt like I didn't learn anything new.
Great Writing.......2006-01-24
I bought this book for my parents since they own property north of Benton Harbor. I started reading the book after I realized I have worked with one of the people in the book. Very interesting. I will not state my personal opinion on the subject.
I rode a mountain bike from Saint Joseph into Benton Harbor shortly after these events took place and never realized how bad things were. Never had any problems until riding my motorcycle in Benton Harbor with my black fiance'.
A must read.......2005-10-16
I actually lived in St. Joseph when this happened and I do remember all the racial tension. As a child and teenager I was always told never to cross the bridge over to Benton Harbor because of how dangerous it was over there. I moved from St. Joes in 1995 and I did not know about this book until a couple years ago. When I first started reading it, it brought back a lot of memorys. This really is a great book and it does capture the tension between the two towns perfectly. I would really recommend this book.
