While it's technical enough for a vet's office, owners will find it equally valuable........2006-11-07
Vets as well as owners of either ferrets or rabbits will appreciate this concise guide for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in either. A series of formatted topics address all common conditions, covering diagnosis, treatment and medication and listing topics alphabetically for quick consultation. Each condition receives an overview of the basics, diagnostic procedures, treatment options, and medications. While it's technical enough for a vet's office, owners will find it equally valuable.

solid medical advice.......2004-02-22
This book was written by a veterinarian and is recommended by my veterinarian. It offers great guidelines for medical care and makes medical conditions easy to understand which helps me work better with my veterinarian. In addition, there is valuable information on behavior, training, diet and housing.
Misleading medical information!.......2004-01-17
I thought this book was great. I read all about the rabbit diseases, so when this book said that a certain symptom was normal I ignored. Now my rabbit is dead, and I know to go to my vet. Good as a starter book, but only that.
A must-have for all bunny parents.......2003-07-27
I bought this book before I adopted my first rabbit, just to make sure that I could handle whatever responsibilities come along with having a pet rabbit. The book gives you advice on which breed is best for you, what to expect as your bunny grows, what to feed, what not to feed, recommended toys, behavior interpretations, common rabbit diseases, symptoms and treatments. I still refer to it whenever I have any concerns. Nothing will substitute a vet visit when your bunny is sick, but you can at least have an idea when a vet visit is necessary. I also refer to this book as my bible. The information is concise and easy to understand, and also easy to find, as the book is very well organized. The only suggestion I would make is to inclue a picture of a Flemish Giant, because that is fast becoming a very popular pet breed. Other than that, the book is perfect.

Pretty good!.......2003-01-10
I received this book a few days ago and have basically read it from cover to cover.
I feel the information in this book is for the most part accurate. One thing that I think should be added into all companion animal informative books (whether it be a book such as this, made for the average pet owner, or a book as a tutorial for beginning breeders) is more information on reasons to NOT breed your pet. The overpopulation of companion animals in this country is outstanding. By educating the uneducated regarding breeding this problem can be brought under control. I was happy to see that it was mentioned to not breed your pet, however I think a more in depth discussion of it should have been added.
I thought the feeding guidelines were a little off as well, but I have seen much worse.
4 stars to Karen Gendron and Michele Earle-Bridges for a great book!
Book Description
The House Rabbit Handbook coined the term "house rabbit" and continues at the forefront of rabbit care and appreciation. Packed with the collective wisdom of bunny-lovers and charming, candid photos of their pets, this fourth edition keeps pace with a more knowledgeable and demanding readership. This revision includes updated health-care and dietary information, accompanied by diagrams and photo illustrations, and chapters on understanding rabbit language, choosing a rabbit, and safety issues. A new section includes revised recommendations for rabbit space and how to creatively integrate it with human space. Fresh housing options described here include "condos" and "Xpens." Exercise and ways to encourage it is the subject of another new section, covering how the shape of an exercise area can determine whether it's used, along with equipment and stimulating "activities" for rabbits. Also here are improved techniques for litter box training, bunny proofing, lifting and handling, grooming and bonding; behavior insights from expert caregivers; dealing with elderly, special-needs, and disabled bunnies; and much more.

A must have for house rabbit owners.......2007-05-14
If you are only going to purchase one book about house rabbits this should be the one. I have purchased several and taken several out of the library and this is still the first one I pick up when I need information.
Simply the best........2007-03-13
This is the single best written resource for people new to the world of house rabbits.
Puzzling.......2007-02-09
I'm not sure I understand why this book has received so many positive reviews. While the writer clearly has plenty of experience with and knowledge about rabbits, the information is not well organized and is often unclear. For instance, in the section on bunny-proofing your home, she never provides a simple list of the hazards and what to do about each. Instead, she opens with a list of questions and then transitions into a list of solutions--but the lists aren't coordinated. At one point, she mentions a solution for hiding hardwood floors and baseboards, but she never says what bunnies *do* to either. Chew? Scratch? How? I need a list of everything bunnies might damage followed by solutions for each. Another example: In the section about multiple rabbits, she focuses on introducing rabbits to each other but says very little about adopting a bonded pair. Is this better than adopting a single bunny? Why? Is it more or less work, and in what way?
My sense is that the author has been dealing with bunnies for so long that she doesn't quite know how to talk to a beginner--and that the editor doesn't understand the benefit of numbered and bulleted lists.
A must have for rabbit owners.......2007-01-01
As a first time rabbit owner, I found this guide very informative. It is a must have for any rabbit owner.
Guide to living with an urbunn.......2006-12-16
Excellent information. I picked up a stray rabbit the week after Easter, with no clue how to care for him or even what to feed him. The House Rabbit Society people were extremely helpful, via their website and this book. Hallelujah, I now know how to take care of my ebil wabbit! I even learned to get him a sister!

Everything About Chinchillas.......2006-08-25
"The Chinchilla Handbook" makes a great companion book to Dr. Vanderlip's standard, "The Guinea Pig Handbook," by the same publisher. Profusely illustrated by Michele Earle-Bridges to enhance the well-organized, straightforward text, this book covers everything the novice (and veterinarian) should know about chinchilla history, suitability as pets, anatomy, housing, feeding, behavior, health care and reproduction. This comprehensive book concludes with information about color inheritance and the fascinating world of showing chinchillas competitively. A helpful list of chinchilla affinity groups and recommended publications precede the detailed book index.
Among the many user-friendly features of the book are the well-organized tables and summary boxes which condense the essential facts about these charming little creatures into easy-to-find bites. The health management aspects of the book point the reader to the most common problems likely to be encountered with chinchillas, and practical advice about avoiding them and deciding when to seek the help of you local chinchilla veterinarian.
A great, but compact, book for chinchilla lovers and veterinary staff alike, and a welcome new addition to the Barron's series of pet owner handbooks. It goes alphabetically on my shelf next to Dr. Vanderlip's manual's on "Degus" and "Dwarf Hamsters."

A great source for the one (or two) bunny family!.......1999-01-14
This is a book for those that don't want to have a rabbitry. It is designed for the person who wishes to raise just one rabbit as a pet and as a wool source. Comprehesive and well written, it includes sections on how to grade, harvest and use your fiber.

Solid info, great reference.......2007-06-22
"The Guinea Pig Handbook" is a great book not only to learn about piggies, but can also be used as a reference so it won't collect dust. As another amazon member stated, you should not use balls for guinea pigs because their spines are not that flexible, and a guinea pig should have at least 7.5 square feet in a cage, but besides this, the information is correct and very detailed. Plus, there's quite a few cute pictures of cavies! This is great for an adult.
With this book and access to www.guineapigcages.com, you have all the resources you need to have happy and healthy guinea pigs!
Good Book.......2007-05-20
We thought this was a good book. tells a history of the guiea pig as well as well as the vital information that you need to care for you guinea pig. My five year old asks me to read it to her. She wants to learn as much as she can about guinea pigs before she gets one.
Excellent and Reliable Source of Information.......2006-02-24
I am very impressed with "The Guinea Pig Handbook". It is actually very well written, and the information is reliable and presented clearly. Unlike a regular text book, or the other manuals that I got from the library, this book gives a historical background on guinea pigs, as well as a reliable source of information for any of the questions or problems I ran into while caring for Bert (my guinea pig). According to my neighbor, who is a veterinarian (and the person that recommended the book to me), there is nothing at all to worry about with reliability of the information in the book. He told me that all of Dr. Vanderlip's books are a great source of information for the beginner and the expert because the information is always clear and reliable.
Best Guinea Pig book available with accurate information!.......2006-02-22
The Guinea Pig Handbook is an excellent resource for everyone who owns a cavy. I have purchased many Guinea Pig books, but this one stands out among all of them and is the one that I constantly refer to. The photographs are beautiful and the information is thorough and detailed. I highly recommend this book to all Guinea Pig owners, whether they have years of experience or they have just purchased their new pet.
Incorrect Information.......2006-02-22
This book provides incorrect information. It's been about three months since I've read it, but one thing I remember is that it says it's okay to use wheels and balls and it IS NOT okay to use wheels and balls with cavies. They cause spinal injuries. Their backs aren't meant to bend that way. I wouldn't take my cavies to any vet that recommends this book unless they point out the parts that are incorrect.

All the basic information.......2006-10-28
This was the book I purchased when I adopted Fuzzy, 5 years ago. It has all the information you need if you have never taken a ferret into your home and your life.
Sadly, Fuzzy has passed away, as of two days prior to this writing. She lived for 8 years, (she was almost 3 years old when I took her home), and her health was excellent until her last year. She was my little buddy, and I took her with me almost everywhere.
For those who would consider keeping ferret:
-They are not like dogs and cats, they need to interact with you very closely. Give them as much attention as possible.
-Ferrets are highly intelligent animals. Even if they seem indifferent, they really aren't. Young ferrets may seem more preoccupied with exploring the house, or playing with toys, but they still need your care and love (ferrets become more openly affectionate with age).
-Because they are intelligent, and therefore curious, they will get into extraordinary mischief, and they do break things. A KEEPER OF FERRETS MUST HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR! In fact, weasel-mischief can be quite hilarious from our perspective!
-Ferrets have very little fear, and very little sense of caution, they require your supervision to keep them safe! They can easily get lost or in an accident without your watchful eye! They need you!
-Although cages are sold for ferrets, FERRETS ARE NOT MEANT TO BE CAGED for long periods. The cage is there to keep them safe when there are potential unsafe conditions, such as cleaning the house, etc.
-Ferrets like to nip and bite. This is not because they are wild, vicious, or mean, its just the way they play and communicate with each other. They assume you are no different!
-They also relieve themselves quite a bit, and require frequent cleaning of their living-spaces. If your gut or bladder was as tiny, you would "go" just as often!
-Ferrets have a musty odor, but its not so bad, and you will get used to it. Besides, they are also soft, warm, and furry.
Sadly, there are many ferrets that wind up with abusive and neglectful people. These kind of people brought a ferret home because they want to show-off, or some such thing. When they realize that caring for an animal requires work and compassion, thats where the trouble starts, and the ferret suffers quite badly. If you are not one of "those kind of people", and you care for animals, you will probably make a ferret's brief life very happy.
Everything and more in a Ferret Book.......2003-03-09
The best ferret book that I have ever bought or read. Has so much more than the other books out their. You will find more on ferret colors than anyplace else. More on health and care and feeding that I have found. And the best is the Understanding Ferret Behavior!! cant go wrong with that. The book jacket (on the back)says it all The Ferret Handbook The Information You Need to Raise a Happy and Healthy Ferret. Facts, advice, and fascinating insight tell you all you need to know and much more..
A Great Beginners Book.......2001-07-27
If you've never owned a ferret before or feel like you're not knowledgable enough with the fuzzies you have now, this is a great book. It covers all the basics one needs to know when caring for a ferret, or multiples. Including ferret proofing your home, basic training technics with multiple suggestions for different behavioral problems since no two ferrets are a like and will respond differently and many many other topics. I enjoyed this book and found it very informative since at the time I purchased it I felt I needed to learn more about my sweet little fuzzies and sure did! A great book.
The best.......2001-06-19
This book tells you about everything you need to now about Fuzzies, carpet sharks, or Ferrets.
Awesome.......2001-03-19
I just lovvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvve this book it described everything I needed to know!

Book Description
Packaging is an important factor in any retail environment and a key element in most marketing strategies. Consumers react immediately to package shapes, and are influenced by them when making buying decisions. Different product categories are often easy to recognize by their characteristic form, for example chocolate boxes or milk cartons. On the other hand, a manufacturer of an exclusive product, such as jewellery or perfume, may deliberately choose an unusual, eye-catching form. How to Fold and Folding Patterns for Display and Publicity are unique step-by-step manuals, containing hundreds of great folding ideas and ready-to-use designs. These books are essential tools for anyone involved in the fields of graphic and industrial design, advertising, and printing. All patterns are stored in eps vector format on the enclosed CD-ROMs. They may be used freely to create new designs, and can be scaled and modified to suit any conceivable purpose.

Obrigatorio.......2007-01-11
Esse é o tipo de livro que nao pode faltar na estante. Muito bom.
Book Description
Barron’s Pet Handbooks look very much like Barron’s Complete Pet Owner’s Manuals, but the Handbooks are larger—more pages, more text, more color photos, and more detailed pet-care advice. This brand-new title will be of special value to parents of younger kids who are keeping hamsters, to older children who can read the book on their own, and of course, to adults who keep hamsters as a hobby. The author explains everything hamster owners need to know about the animal’s life cycle, traits, breeding, feeding, caging, treating health problems—and simply keeping hamsters happy with appropriate toys and exercise accessories.
Customer Reviews:
Not the best care guide for dwarf hamsters.......2006-12-29
I care for 10 Roborovsky dwarf hamsters, the world's smallest and fastest hamsters. So naturally I look for information that will help me care for this specific species of hamster. Although much of the information in this book is good, there is some info in here that is just plain wrong. For instance, it lists the Roborovsky as a "large" hamster reaching 4 inches in length, when it is actually the world's smallest hamster, reaching a maximum of 4-5 CENTIMETERS (2 inches). So I have to rate this book as just OK, since it contains some erroneous information. I also rate it lower because the author makes few distinctions between large/standard and dwarf hamster care. But there are key differences that should be noted in any hamster care guide. For example, dwarf hamsters, especially Campbell's, are prone to contract diabetes. So any source of sugar, including fresh fruit, should be very limited or avoided entirely. But the book makes no mention of this, showing the same list of recommended foods for all types of hamsters. Therefore, I would not recommend this book as a good guide for dwarf hamster care (or use it only as a supplemental guide to something better written by a vet, like "Dwarf Hamsters" by Sharon Vanderlip DVM). Since I have no experience with standard hamsters, I would use other people's reviews as a guide for how well this book covers care of standard hamsters.
The Best.......2006-11-05
This is by far the best book if you are looking to buy a hamster. My parents made me read it before I could get a hamster and I learned soo much. Not to mention there are adorible pictures on every page! You will learn more about hamsters with this book than with an other book and the internet combined!
Excellent book.......2006-08-14
I had pet hamsters as a child, but now that I'm an adult, I've fallen in love with them all over again. "The Hamster Handbook" is an excellent all-around guide to the history, physiology, and care of hamsters. I appreciated the many anecdotes about the author's personal experience with hamsters that can be found throughout the book. I also enjoyed reading about the hamster's humble beginnings and how it made its way to becoming a popular pet. And the chapter on feeding hamsters has been incredibly helpful...I hadn't realized that there were so many different things hamsters eat (they are omnivores, like humans). If you think hamsters are just a disposable pet for kids, you are very wrong. Pick up "The Hamster Handbook" and learn about the amazing and wonderful little creature that is the hamster.
Only Book for your Hamu that you'll ever need.......2004-08-23
I was so lucky to come across this book! It's deceptively small and thin because in fact, it is chock full of information on every single subject pertaining to hamsters! It takes the basic tenets of any hamster care guide and expands on it tremendously. You get a FULL history of hamsters, a FULL guide to nutrition and health, exercise, hamster language, breeding . . . it even has information on showing your hamster and on hamster clubs and organizations. This book has absolutely everything you will need to know! You are mistaken if you think you can get through it in one sitting!
A very attractive factor also, is that the author has had tons of experience with making lots of tools/habitats/toys/wheels/breeding shelves herself, and gives you all the information you need to make your own! She does not endorse any product or suggest you buy certain things the way other books do - she will tell you what your hamster needs, and more often than not, she will tell you how to make them! For example, you can make a hamster litterbox out of a juice box (instead of buying an expensive one like I did).
MOST IMPORTANTLY - it is very evident that the author LOVES hamsters. She writes with affection, care and passion. It was as though the book was written out of love! She talks fondly and sweetly of her own hamsters (she owns and breeds over 70 with her husband) and really makes you feel "okay" for being hopelessly in love with your own hamster :).
Oh, and, it's got the most adorable, beautiful hamster photographs you've ever seen.
Buy this book, and you will never need another, or if you insist on buying more than one, this is a *must* for your collection!
Very similar to Barron's other manual........2004-07-14
This Hamster Handbook is very similar in information and binding quality to Barron's Complete Owner's Manual. Slightly redundant, but an essential guide for hamster owners. Barron's is an excellent company that publishes quality pet owner's guides. Their books on Golden Retrievers are also some of the best on the market. The authors have much expertise in this pet and others, and do not hesitate to document it on the page.
Book Description
The pet rabbit population of the United States is well over ten million...and rapidly multiplying! Carrying less risk of diseases for their human companions than do domestic dogs or cats, rabbits are gentle, responsive, amenable, cuddly, clever, intelligent, and inexpensive. Veterinarian surgeon David Taylor reveals how to care for your rabbit, including an overview of the hare's origins in Spain, identifying features of the various breeds, their behavior and biology, finding the right rabbit for you, good housing for longevity, and looking out for signs of illness. Interspersed throughout are "Did You Know?" sidebars featuring little-known facts about our beloved furry friends. 96 pages (all in color), 5 7/8 x 8 1/4.

Awesome Handbook!.......2004-03-26
Definitely recommended...
This quick reference guide is well-laid out and has quite a bit of useful (as well as interesting) information.
Not only do you get a lot of information that is easy to understand, but the photos are fantastic as well!
I have had my second rabbit for nearly a year now and this is one of the best resources I've found yet.
