3 out of 5 stars "My " Working American Bulldog.......2007-05-21

The most comprehensive book to date on the subject of the American Bulldog. Dave Putnam really did his homework as for as the history & orgins of the breed, although when he gets to the modren AB it becomes more obvious that he favors the "standard" over the larger "Johnson" type. With that aside I still consider it "a most have" for any AB owner, except I think he should have change the name of the book from "The Working AB" to "My Working AB" seeing as how most of the text is about personal experiences of his dog, & not the breed in general.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for American Bulldog Lovers.......2007-05-11

Exellent book on American Bulldogs. Goes into deep detail about how these dogs came about and what they where used for then and now. Lots of pictures from training to hunting. Would recommend to anyone that likes bully dogs and wants to do some research about them.

5 out of 5 stars A must for bulldog enthusiasts.......2000-06-04

This book made me laugh out loud more times than I could count. Wonderful illustrations and poingant observations of "bulldog-do: the way of the bulldog". Having recently lost a bulldog companion I was delighted to be reminded with such touching humor of all the wonders of the "way of the bulldog". The book covers the arts of war and peace, for example Bulldog Zen, "coming when called", "the leash of no leash", and techniques of meditation. The arts of war include such tactics as "the mysterious assault of the foul wind", "making your own body into a bobby trap" and "the flurry of flying drool" all beautifully illustrated by J.C Brown, a calligrapher and illustrater living in Tokyo, whose other work includes "Zen for Cats". The book itself is translated from the Japanese by Jeff Hunter, a translator specializing in Buddhism and literature, and master to the Samurai Bulldog Chibibusuka Dogizaemon, the soon to be famous author. Do yourself a favor and buy this book it will make you laugh and possibly cry. It might even make you laugh till you cry.

this book has a lot of great info. plus there are many pictures of american bulldogs throughout the book. it was an easy read and i would advise getting it if your getting a puppy

2 out of 5 stars A good enough "beginner" book, but that's all. .......2006-08-18

This book gives a synposized historic review of the AB's, talks a bit about the breeds characteristics and has some good pictures of some "famous" ABs, but most (I'd say 80%) of the book is dedicated to generic, overall dog care. It's a cookie-cutter book -- you could plug in any breed info. in the first few chapters -- and then market the book in the appropriate breed section. This is a decent enough introduction to the breed, but only that. It's not a terrible book, it's just not very good as a breed-specific reference. In fact, anyone seriously considering an AB isn't going to get enough out of this book about THIS breed to honestly help them out -- and this is a breed you need to know before you take one into your life! As noted by other reviewers, for those who really want some serious information on AB's, buy the Working American Bulldog, which is a GREAT book -- maybe the ONLY widely-available book that gives in-depth information about the breed's history, temperament and qualities.

2 out of 5 stars Basic Dog Book.......2006-04-04

The first three chapters of this book talk about American Bulldogs, the fourth gets a little sketchy, Chapters 5 - 12 don't even mention the words American Bulldog; it's all generic "dog talk" after that. Not really what we were expecting since training, and working with, the breed is not quite the same as trying to train a peekapoo.

1 out of 5 stars A poor excuse for a book.......2006-02-01

This is a poor book and I would not recommend it to anyone. Was not impressed at all.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Read!!!.......2005-04-15

This book was a decent read for overall dog owners. I agree with several previous statements posted. It is not what I expected it to be in regards to the Breed (American Bulldog) itself. It does give some helpful insight on overall dog ownership. Mr. Blackwell owns some of the most impressive American Bulldogs ever bred. I am proud to say my American Bulldog has Blackwells' Blackeyed Susan in his foundation bloodline. Check out The Working American Bulldog. Now thats a peice of work.

No longer a well-kept secret in the United States, the American Bulldog is enjoying a renaissance of interest around the world. Undeniably handsome and athletic, this magnificent bulldog, once used solely for farm and ranch work, is now employed as a working protection dog and a loyal home companion. Author Abe Fishman provides a controversial but thoroughly accurate retelling of the breed’s history and its recreation in the US. His experience with the breed and his candor prove both enlightening and uncompromising, as he recommends proper training, conditioning and rearing techniques for all American Bulldog owners. From the insightful chapter about the breed’s characteristics to the advice-packed sections on puppy selection, house-training, obedience work and solving puppy problems, this new Comprehensive Owner’s Guide proves to be an excellent addition to every bully breed lover’s library. In addition to chapters discussing everyday care, feeding and home safety, the book also includes a reliable, up-to-date chapter on preventive healthcare, covering the selection of a veterinarian, parasite control, vaccinations and preventive care, written by Harvard lecturer and popular veterinarian, Dr. Lowell Ackerman. Illustrated with many remarkable color photographs, this volume brings this bright and agile canine athlete to life. For the right family seeking an active, trainable and good-looking guard dog and pet, the American Bulldog will not fail to delight.

This book is a ok book has some good tips and info that you can find in most books on AB's .The guy has no Idea about AB's , I mean the many theories of the breed and his negative remarks about other people's theory about the breed and not to mention writting mistakes in this book. But that just my though's on it!

between his random babble, run-on sentances that lead nowhere, out of the blue paragraph openings and subject and not to mention his "theory" on the American Bulldog I wouldnt waste anymore time (let alone money) on this book. I mean come on, this guy spelled "organized" with an "s" for crying out loud. this book is an insult not only to the editors and publishers who helped put it out, but to the true American Bulldog lovers worldwide. I promise you that if you are looking for a good book on these dogs there are some out there - it's just not this one. after reading this i feel like i should write a book on space exploration - apparently you dont even need to know the subject on which you are writing about.

5 out of 5 stars A Magical Journey into the World of Man and Dog.......2005-10-18

If you're really lucky, you understand me when I say that a dog calls forth the best in a man and reveals to him little glimpses of the mysterious otherwise unseen life force. As a Seneca saying tells us, "Whenever a person loves a dog, he derives great power from it."

Part of the power that we derive from the love of a dog is reversed, weakening us in the sense that in the back of our minds there is always a voice whispering to us, telling us that we and our loved one will go separate ways, at least for a while. The author's fear and dread of that separation, which we call death, comes across on every page. So be it. But fear and dread are conflated with joy and wisdom. It is such in life when one loves a dog.

"Our purpose together is to deepen soul," Dr. Fishcher states on page 66. On page 68 he continues the thought, "The shaman has to have a guardian spirit in order to do its work, ..." His guardian spirit was a bulldog. Yours might be a beagle, pit bull, chihuahua, or something else.

In the pages of this magnificent book you will read the story of a troubled man who learned to give unconditional love, just as it was given to him. Both man and dog love unconditionally as they explore the mysteries of life.

I promise you this. If you read this book, you will remember Faccia Bello until the day you die. And you will appreciate your life and that of your dog even more than you do now.

5 out of 5 stars The Shaman's Bulldog.......2003-06-04

Dear Readers,

I must say that this is one of the most outstanding books that I have read in a long time. In a most complicated world that we all live in today it was so nice to read about the simple things that make us what we really are.

Thankyou Renaldo and thankyou Mr Faccio Bello for showing us the way to your heart.

5 out of 5 stars True to form - a very meaningful tribute.......2000-04-06

As a bulldog owner I found this book to be not only deeply touching, but very authentic as well. It highlights the animal's personality traits and loving nature. The Shaman Bulldog is a glorious story of how an animal can heal you and bring you face to face with the depths of love within you. It's a glorious tribute to not just the Bulldog, but all animals that give us the gift of their companionship. How few of us deserve them.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic, loving, and a wonderful read........1997-09-27

This is one of the most endearing books I have read in a very long time. Not just a book for bulldog owners, it is for anyone who has loved, lost and loved again. I couldn't put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down........1997-04-09

This book is like a combination of James Herriott and "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. Very interesting mythical and spiritual images. It taught me a great deal about the "real" relationship between human and animal

Book Description

It has been said that football is the secular religion of the South. If so, then the gridiron grudge between the football teams of the University of Georgia and the Georgia Insitute of Technology is nothing less than the Genesis Myth. John Chandler Griffin, one of the nations foremost writers of sports histories, gives us a play-by-play in the annual brawl between these two southern powerhouses in his definitive GEORGIA VS. GEORGIA TECH: GRIDIRON GRUDGE SINCE 1893. PUBLISHER: Hill Street Press

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Georgia Tech football book EVER.......2002-06-07

This book rocks! The old photos are cool, the organization is clear and easy to follow. My dad and I read it together--he started in the 70 and told me about games he went to when he was at school, then whe talked about games we'd been together when when I was a kid, and games I went to when I was a college--the five-year plan. This is a great book, lots of good pics, and easy to follow. Get it for you dad or yourself and you'll have something to read during the commercials during the season.

1 out of 5 stars How Do You Make Such A Great Subject Boring?.......2002-06-03

Answer: you reduce the game descriptions to the following formula: Date of game, attendance, weather, records of the two teams, list of opponents beaten, list of opponents lost to or tied, a brief synopsis of scoring drives with a few players' names mentioned, cite the turnovers, and give the final score. Repeat a hundred and six times and then publish. Illustrate these chapters with small black and white photographs of the two teams playing (for the most part) other games on their schedule: here's a picture from '76 Tech-USC; here's one from the '76 Georgia-Vanderbilt game (WHY?). Offer no insights, don't quote players or coaches or fans, just the facts. Griffin barely even mentions the wildly controversial call that decided the 1999 game, a call that got national media attention and resulted in the crew being disciplined! And the huge brawl during the 1993 game, which was front-page news the next day, gets no mention at all. What a disappointment: the author, whose lack of ties to (or interest in) either school is pretty apparent, simply read library microfilm and phoned in this lifeless attempt at a Father's Day gift. And may I add in closing that Tech lies and cheats?

5 out of 5 stars Georgia VS. Georgia Tech:Gridiron Grudge Since 1893.......2000-12-08

"It's been said that football is the secular religion of the south. If so, then the gridiron grudge between the University of Georgia and The Georgia Institue of Technology is nothing less than a genesis myth, the creation of good and evil." (Georgia VS. Georgia Tech) Whom you believe to be good or evil depends on the sideyou're on. The Georgia VS Georgia Tech rivalry is alive and well in our state, enduring over one hundred years. Equipment and rules have been subject to change. The emotional intensity has not. In Georgia VS. Georgia Tech, John Cnadler Griffin describes the growth of this college-based conflict from just a game to its modern-day frenzy. Beginning with their first contest in 1893, he presents the players and the plays that fostered this fierce tradition. Georgia VS. Georgia is more than a historical chronology. It is an entertaining analysis of an ongoing football phenomenon. Richly illustrated with over a thousand rare photographs, the book is painstakingly researched and superbly written.

Book Description

The University of Georgia Bulldogs' mascot, Uga VI, is the current title-bearer of over six decades of English bulldogs who have faithfully served a loyal legion of University of Georgia football fans, carrying a grand tradition since Uga I was born in 1955. Whenever and wherever the Georgia Bulldogs play football, Uga is there along with his air-conditioned doghouse. This book gives a rare glimpse into the personal and breed history of these dogs. Full of anecdotes, such as Uga V's attempt to bite an Auburn player's leg when he made the mistake of venturing into Uga's sideline during the 1996 Auburn vs. Georgia game, this book also includes illustrations and memorabilia from the mascots' owner's personal collection.

5 out of 5 stars Uga Rules.......2006-11-16

Even if you are not interested in the Bulldogs of Georgia you probably will find "Damn Good Dogs" a delightful book; beautifully illustrated, the book relates the history behind the English bulldogs that have become the University of Georgia's mascot beginning in 1956. Sonny Seiler, who has owned the bulldogs, has put together (with Kent Hannon), a pleasing book filled with many photographs. A chapter is devoted to each of the dogs relating their lives and what occurred while they were mascot and the growing fame of the Ugas. I first saw this book on a visit to Savannah and was charmed by it from the moment I opened the cover.

This is a large format book that was thoughtfully designed and is a great tribute to the remarkable dogs named Uga.

5 out of 5 stars Uga rules!.......2006-08-09

I am a lifelong University of Alabama fan but I have always known and admitted that Uga is - bar none - the coolest dog on the planet. And any dog who bites back at an Auburn player knows his football! My all-time favorite was Uga V and I was thrilled when he was rightfully named the greatest mascot ever by Sports Illustrated and made their cover. I was also excited to see this book.

This book is a great overview of the lives of the Ugas, their owners, and the Georgia football program. If you love dogs and college football, you'll love this book.

4 out of 5 stars I liked it.......2004-04-26

This is a good book. I highly recommend it to Ga. fans. UGA is a staple of the entire Georgia program and his lovable story is one that all college football fans can enjoy. I recommend "A Tailgater's Guide To SEC Football" as well for any serious SEC Fans.

5 out of 5 stars A tribute to America's #1 Mascot.......2003-10-15

Guaranteed to please all Georgia fans and English Bulldog lovers, this entertaining book contains the individual stories of six beloved Ugas who have served as mascots for the University of Georgia since 1956. Filled with delightful photos, illustrations and memorabilia spanning nearly five decades, it is loaded with fun facts, heartwarming stories--even poems written in their honor. Uga flies free on Delta, has an air-conditioned doghouse and an official Student ID Card, eats steak, attends social affairs, occasionally wears a tux, has appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, in Coca Cola ads, in Playboy magazine, in Animals Who's Who, on credit cards, in movies, TV shows--and more! Following lavish funeral tributes, Ugas I through V were interred in a mausoleum at Sanford Stadium with inspiring epitaphs outlining their achievements engraved on bronze tablets. Uga VI has already made a name for himself "woofing" his encouragement to a well-deserved SEC title in 2002. GO DAWGS and long live Uga VI.

5 out of 5 stars Dam Good Dogs!!.......2003-07-28

Despite the fact that I am from Georgia Tech, the long time feud of UGA, sarcastically, I am also an English bulldog lover, having owned 2 English bullies in my life thus far. I highly recommend this book to all bulldog lovers, even if they are not associated with UGA.

    Book Description

This is the story of two Infantry Divisions during the first weeks of the Normandy campaign. With battle cries of '29 - Let's Go!' and '3rd Division - Drive On!' the American 29th and British 3rd fought their way into OMAHA and SWORD beaches on D-day and then inland towards their respective objectives - the major communication centers of St. Lo and Caen.

After describing the agonies suffered by the Americans on 'Bloody OMAHA' and the difficulties experienced by the British in overcoming the concrete strong points sited in depth behind the SWORD beach, the author follows both Divisions as they tried to break through the German defenses. Their initial moves were quickly countered by a well trained and astute enemy - in the case of the Americans by infantry and paratroopers in the dense 'hedgerow country' covering the approaches to St. Lo, and in the British by the Panzers and Panzer-Grenadiers defending Caen in the open country to its north.

It was to take the GIs nearly six weeks to reach their objective, whilst the Tommies were forced into a concurrent holding operation that in many respects resembled the trench warfare hell of World War One. The main part of Caen was eventually captured by the British and Canadians on 9 July and St. Lo by the Americans nine days later. By then two Allied Divisions had suffered more than 10,000 casualties, several thousand French civilians had been killed and the previously beautiful cities turned to rubble in a series of devastating air attacks.

Throughout this vivid account of infantry combat, readers will be able to compare and contrast the leadership qualities of the various commanders and the tactics employed by the Americans, British and Germans; and they will surely marvel at the sheer courage of a generation that is rapidly passing away.

As many books of this type I buy it because I want to find out more about the case or the person's life, like most people who buy the book. I found it interesting and intreaging. I learned a lot about George Reeves through this book and how people controled him in this book. I learned a lot about the case.

The only thing is that the very end of the book was a little slow. But don't let that stop you from buying the book. To find out about what happened in his life then buy it. To find out what happened in the case then...

The Man of Steel's untimely death still remains one of Hollywood's ultimate mysteries never to be solved.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Hollywood-Noir.......2007-01-06

If you liked LA Confidential, you'll find this book quite an enjoyable ride! Some reviews elsewhere bagged on the Noir-ish, hyped up language, but this subsides after the first few chapters. As a child, I had been told by my grandmother that George Reeves had shot himself and this placed a bit of a stigma on this hero of my youth. This book does a great job of showing George's behind-the-scenes life and provides a great back story to the big mystery . . . did he or didn't he? I had a pretty strong opinion prior to reading this but I found myself flip-flopping a few times during the course of the book. I have passed this one around to my wife and relatives and all have enjoyed it. Its an intersting look at Hollywood and the birth of TV and the subject matter is interesting enough to make this a great "beach book". Even Hollywood history is great escapism. The only disappointment is not being able to hold out hope for a different ending for my hero.
