3 out of 5 stars "My " Working American Bulldog.......2007-05-21

The most comprehensive book to date on the subject of the American Bulldog. Dave Putnam really did his homework as for as the history & orgins of the breed, although when he gets to the modren AB it becomes more obvious that he favors the "standard" over the larger "Johnson" type. With that aside I still consider it "a most have" for any AB owner, except I think he should have change the name of the book from "The Working AB" to "My Working AB" seeing as how most of the text is about personal experiences of his dog, & not the breed in general.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for American Bulldog Lovers.......2007-05-11

Exellent book on American Bulldogs. Goes into deep detail about how these dogs came about and what they where used for then and now. Lots of pictures from training to hunting. Would recommend to anyone that likes bully dogs and wants to do some research about them.

5 out of 5 stars A must for bulldog enthusiasts.......2000-06-04

This book made me laugh out loud more times than I could count. Wonderful illustrations and poingant observations of "bulldog-do: the way of the bulldog". Having recently lost a bulldog companion I was delighted to be reminded with such touching humor of all the wonders of the "way of the bulldog". The book covers the arts of war and peace, for example Bulldog Zen, "coming when called", "the leash of no leash", and techniques of meditation. The arts of war include such tactics as "the mysterious assault of the foul wind", "making your own body into a bobby trap" and "the flurry of flying drool" all beautifully illustrated by J.C Brown, a calligrapher and illustrater living in Tokyo, whose other work includes "Zen for Cats". The book itself is translated from the Japanese by Jeff Hunter, a translator specializing in Buddhism and literature, and master to the Samurai Bulldog Chibibusuka Dogizaemon, the soon to be famous author. Do yourself a favor and buy this book it will make you laugh and possibly cry. It might even make you laugh till you cry.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for beginners.......2007-06-12

I am in the process of getting my first bulldog and this book was a helpful introduction to the breed and addressed my initial concerns about adopting a bulldog. It has great pictures and helpful tips about bringing home a new puppy. My only disappointment was that it lacked substantial and glossed over many topics such as training. Overall, great book for beginners though!

Book Description

“Pelagia’s family likeness to Father Brown and Miss Marple is marked, and reading about her supplies a similarly decorous pleasure.”
–The Literary Review

In a remote Russian province in the late nineteenth century, Bishop Mitrofanii must deal with a family crisis. After learning that one of his great aunt’s beloved and rare white bulldogs has been poisoned, the Orthodox bishop knows there is only one detective clever enough to investigate the murder: Sister Pelagia.

The bespectacled, freckled Pelagia is lively, curious, extraordinarily clumsy, and persistent. At the estate in question, she finds a whole host of suspects, any one of whom might have benefited if the old lady (who changes her will at whim) had expired of grief at the pooch’s demise. There’s Pyotr, the matron’s grandson, a nihilist with a grudge who has fallen for the maid; Stepan, the penniless caretaker, who has sacrificed his youth to the care of the estate; Miss Wrigley, a mysterious Englishwoman who has recently been named sole heiress to the fortune; Poggio, an opportunistic and freeloading “artistic” photographer; and, most intriguingly, Naina, the old lady’s granddaughter, a girl so beautiful she could drive any man to do almost anything.

As Pelagia bumbles and intuits her way to the heart of a mystery among people with faith only in greed and desire, she must bear in mind the words of Saint Paul: “Beware of dogs–and beware of evil-doers.”

“Critics on both sides of the Atlantic have praised [Akunin’s] clever plots, vivid characters and wit.”
–Baltimore Sun

“Akunin’s wonderful novels are always intricately webbed and plotted.”
–The Providence Journal

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Stick with Fandorin.......2007-06-06

Not one of his best. No character grabs one's interest, and trying to keep track of the many players with their multiple, many-syllabled, sound-alike names takes one right out of the plot. Much better to wait for the next Erast Fandorin novel. Take a pass 'til then.

5 out of 5 stars A sleuth in nun's habit.......2007-05-30

Boris Akunin is a well-regarded Russian author of suspense fiction, heretofore known for his Fandorin series, which concerns a part-James Bond, part-Hercules Poirot creation who nonetheless is strikingly original. SISTER PELAGIA AND THE WHITE BULLDOG marks the beginning of a new direction for Akunin and fittingly introduces Mortalis, a new imprint of literary mystery and suspense fiction for Random House.

We quickly learn from the unnamed, omnipresent narrator that Sister Pelagia is a sleuth in nun's habit, wishing to devote her life to God yet feeling stifled by the requirements of the order and by the role of women in early 20th century Russia. In addition, she is quite adept at solving mysteries, a skill that she hides from all except her supervisory bishop, who keeps her abilities a secret not only to preserve the good sister's customary role but also to keep her in reserve as a secret weapon in the political skirmishes that were the hallmark of the time.

The bishop generally has his hands full, what with an inspector from the Holy Synod coming to meddle in local affairs, the gruesome discovery of two decapitated bodies, and the bishop's aunt being in a terrible state as a result of the baffling death of one of her white bulldogs, a special breed that she and her late husband had nurtured through generations. The perpetrator of the canine murder is quickly determined, even if the motive isn't, and the unforeseen nexus that connects this and other events is slowly but surely sorted out in a climactic courtroom scene in which the good sister has a starring role.

It should be noted that Russian literature tends to be the antithesis of, say, a James Patterson work --- why use one word when pages will do? --- and occasionally, as even Akunin notes with a nod and a wink through his anonymous narrator, things seem to wander off track. All is revealed in good time, however, and along the way Akunin drops nuggets of dry, subtle humor amidst social and political commentary. Those who take their mysteries with great spoonfuls of explosions and karate may find this book wanting (though it does, particularly near the end, have its moments), and there is enough political intrigue and metaphor to provide a satisfactory feast.

Lovingly translated by Andrew Bromfield, SISTER PELAGIA AND THE WHITE BULLDOG is a welcome debut of a new series that hopefully will give Akunin the wider visibility in this country that his work deserves. And let's give some kudos to Random House as well for its brave launch of Mortalis. We'll happily look for more.

5 out of 5 stars Akunin at his best.......2007-03-30

The Sister Pelagia mystery series may not be as effortless a read to take in as Erast Fandorin, but it's well worth the effort. While the White Bulldog may be have a plot that is slightly less dynamic than the one Fandorin fans are used to, it is a refreshing change of pace. The language is beautiful, the characters are engaging and the sleuth and her posse (bishop Mitrofani and Berdichervsky) are at least as charismatic as Fandorin and Masa.
The series (there are only three novels in it) picks up the pace in The Black Monk and positively goes berserk in the Red Rooster, but the provincial charm of the White Bulldog is very enjoyable too.
Most Russian fans of Akunin consider the Pelagia trilogy to be a more workmanlike and even series than Fandorin, which has its peaks and valleys.

5 out of 5 stars A female Fr. Brown.......2007-02-13

In the midst of writing mysteries about detective Erast Fandorin, the author has also begun a new series. This one concerns a nun named Sister Pelagia, who is sent out by her Bishop to help solve mysteries and murders in a backward province of Imperial Russia. The action is fast, the plot never wavers, and the characters are all well-srawn. One interesting quirk to this story is that, when it is required, Sister Pelagia assumes the identity of her "sister", a widow who dresses and acts exactly as would an upper class member of the Russian nobility. I found the premise of this book fascinating, and the characters of both the good sister and her boss the bishop very believeable, therefore I am awaiting anxiously the next book in this marvelous series.

5 out of 5 stars nineteenth century historical thriller .......2007-02-10

In Zavolzhsk, far from the home of the Tsar, Bishop Mitrofannii rules over the vast scarcely populated remote region instead of Governor von Haggenau. The Bishop has earned a reputation for solving unsolved mysteries, which he takes pride in accomplishing though he also knows who actually uncovers the truth. Now his elderly late Aunt Marya Tatischeva sends him a letter asking for his help as someone poisoned Zagulyai and Zadidai with the former dying in agony and the latter barely surviving. He decides to send his secret sleuth literature and gymnastics teacher Sister Pelagia to learn what happened and why to the white bulldogs.

Sister Pelagia travels to the home of Marya to investigate the canine homicide. Sister Pelagia quickly concludes that the target is the elderly woman, who is known for treating her dogs like pampered babies, but what the nun believes is the motive leads to several avaricious souls. However, other dogs are killed and the case takes a twist when two males are recovered from the nearby river with their heads removed. The Bishop directs Sister Pelagia to investigate the murders regardless of where it takes her, as he expects everyone to live morally and piously correct though he has some doubts with her switching identities from clumsy reticent nun to vibrant nimble Polina Lisitsina.

In some ways this is more a nineteenth century historical thriller than a mystery. SISTER PELAGIA AND THE WHITE BULLDOG is a superior whodunit that uses the backdrop to paint a vivid picture of a remote part of Tsarist Russia. Readers will have to adapt to the names of the key characters, but will find it worth the time as the descriptions are terrific and the cast powerful especially the Sister and the Bishop, as irony and humor augment a fabulous story line.

5 out of 5 stars What an adorable book........2007-07-05

This book is relate-able for a lot of kids who are trying to fit in and make friends. It's a cute and funny story.

5 out of 5 stars a must for bulldog lovers.......2007-04-20

Picked this up at the library because I love bulldogs, and now am buying it because my kids, 2 and 5, laugh at every funny moment, every time we read it. The illustrations are right-on and remind me of all the bulldogs I've ever loved...especially the one of Chowder riding in the shopping cart. I can't wait until my dad, another bulldog lover, has a chance to read it to the grandchildren!

5 out of 5 stars Thinking Outside the Box.......2007-03-29

Chowder is a book that appeals to all age levels. If you are a dog-lover,this book is for you. If you like books with great humor, this book is for you. I like the way bulldog is portrayed as an individualist. Chowder shows us that being an individual is fun. Thinking outside the box, as Chowder certainly does, brings fun into life.

The illustrations are brilliant. Brown's excellent training is certainly evident throughout the book.

Chowder is a dog not afraid of being himself. This is a great book for teaching young people about being proud of who you are. Go beyond the surface of the story and dig for some life's lessons in this marvelous book!

3 out of 5 stars nice graphics, wierd story.......2007-01-09

I know I'm not a kid anymore, but this story is rather out there. The graphics pulled me in though - nice to see something different. I did purchase this for my son - but he hasn't responded to it much yet.

this book has a lot of great info. plus there are many pictures of american bulldogs throughout the book. it was an easy read and i would advise getting it if your getting a puppy

2 out of 5 stars A good enough "beginner" book, but that's all. .......2006-08-18

This book gives a synposized historic review of the AB's, talks a bit about the breeds characteristics and has some good pictures of some "famous" ABs, but most (I'd say 80%) of the book is dedicated to generic, overall dog care. It's a cookie-cutter book -- you could plug in any breed info. in the first few chapters -- and then market the book in the appropriate breed section. This is a decent enough introduction to the breed, but only that. It's not a terrible book, it's just not very good as a breed-specific reference. In fact, anyone seriously considering an AB isn't going to get enough out of this book about THIS breed to honestly help them out -- and this is a breed you need to know before you take one into your life! As noted by other reviewers, for those who really want some serious information on AB's, buy the Working American Bulldog, which is a GREAT book -- maybe the ONLY widely-available book that gives in-depth information about the breed's history, temperament and qualities.

2 out of 5 stars Basic Dog Book.......2006-04-04

The first three chapters of this book talk about American Bulldogs, the fourth gets a little sketchy, Chapters 5 - 12 don't even mention the words American Bulldog; it's all generic "dog talk" after that. Not really what we were expecting since training, and working with, the breed is not quite the same as trying to train a peekapoo.

1 out of 5 stars A poor excuse for a book.......2006-02-01

This is a poor book and I would not recommend it to anyone. Was not impressed at all.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Read!!!.......2005-04-15

This book was a decent read for overall dog owners. I agree with several previous statements posted. It is not what I expected it to be in regards to the Breed (American Bulldog) itself. It does give some helpful insight on overall dog ownership. Mr. Blackwell owns some of the most impressive American Bulldogs ever bred. I am proud to say my American Bulldog has Blackwells' Blackeyed Susan in his foundation bloodline. Check out The Working American Bulldog. Now thats a peice of work.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and easy to follow........2005-05-22

This is a great book for any Frenchie owner. Unlike some books which claim to be breed specific but aren't this book contains lots of information on French Bulldogs. It covers housebreaking, Feeding, Grooming, Health and so much more. There are lots of great photos as well. I got this book shortly before getting my Frenchie, and it was so helpful. It's written in a way that someone new to the breed like me, or someone that is intreseted in a pet rather then a showdog can understand. This is a book written by a true Frenchie lover, for Frenchie lovers and newbies.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL RESOURCE!.......2005-04-07

I have read and reread this book numerous times. I have owned Frenchies for nearly ten years and this is hands down the single best overall basics on the breed. The author presents important information in an engaging, straight forward manner and is a world renowned expert in Frenchies. If you are considering a frenchie or have recently added one to your family, this book will be an invaluable resource.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book For Anyone Considering A French Bulldog.......2005-03-30

I bought this book when we were leaning towards getting a French Bulldog and wanted more in-depth information. The author is a well-respected breeder of Frenchies with many years of experience. She knows what she is talking about first-hand. This is a great book for anyone considering adding a Frenchie to their family. It is full of all the information you need without excessive information that would overwhelm someone trying to decide if this is the right breed for them. Read this book and you will be well prepared for your flat-faced family member on arrival!

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book With Lots Of Accurate Info........2005-03-27

After aquiring my first Frenchie puppy a few months ago, I read this book cover to cover. Now I use it almost daily as a resource--I even quote this book at my vet's office. I would definitely recommend this book to any future Frenchie owner as it has really been a lifesaver for me.

A Very good book about the breed, though it is outdated but still has all the info you need

3 out of 5 stars History Book.......2002-04-10

This is a good book if you are looking for the history of the bulldog. It also has alot of information on different lines and breedings of champion show dogs. There are chapters dealing with bulldogs in different countries as well as their champions form Mexico to Russia.
I was looking for a pet owners book and this book left me wanting for more especially with health issues. The book was written in 1985 so it is slightly outdated. However one bulldog website said it was a must for any serious bulldog owner. I have mine and hope to use it someday.

2 out of 5 stars Depends on what you're looking for.......2001-07-12

This book is excellent if you mostly want a coffee table book about show dogs and the "elite" owners and breeders. The history is interesting and many of the pictures delightful.

For the average owner who wants advice and information for raising and caring for the average bulldog, the book is minimally helpful, in my opinion. No more than a third of the book contains any practical advice at all, and most of that has to do with show dogs. At most, parts of four or five of the eighteen chapters contain advice useful for ordinary owners--and some of that, like the advice on nutrition, seems woefully dated, while a fair bit has nothing to do with bulldogs in particular and amounts to common pet-owner sense. (Like anybody of normal intelligence doesn't know to take a snake-bitten dog to the vet, for instance.) I can't say that I found answers to more than one or two of my many questions about owning a bulldog.

I'd never have bought this book in a bookstore, where I would have seen quickly that it didn't contain what I was looking for. Still, if I'd paid ten or twelve dollars for the book, I'd have been disappointed not to find what I had expected, but content with the enjoyable parts. At ... dollars, I consider the book a seriously bad value for me, an average owner.

2 out of 5 stars The book fo the Bulldog.......2000-04-23

I thought the book had some interesting things about the bulldog but I thought it was just to outdated. The pictures were nice but mostly in black in white. To be honest when I received the book I was disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Very Comprehensive.......2000-02-22

This book is a Bulldog Bible! I bought this before I adopted my beautiful Bella and I am glad I did. This is the complete history of the bulldog, along with grooming tips, their habits/traits, common health problems - absolutely everything you wanted to know about them. Its full of adorable pictures too! I would recommend anyone thinking about buying a bully to get this book and keep handy for reference!
