Great Book.......2007-10-06
This book really helped me decide if I wanted to get a Yorkie. I felt it didn't sugar coat them and made them feel real.
biting?.......2007-09-16
I cannot believe there is no chapter on biting as a puppy. It is a thoroughly obnoxious habit--thought this book would have had some words of wisdom.
Yorkies.......2007-09-13
It's a very good book and it made me realize that I don't want a Yorkshire Terrier. Too small!
Dummy No More!.......2007-07-24
This book was a God send. I'd highly suggest buying it and reading it from cover to cover before bringing your little Yorkie home. The book is an easy read and because of the format, you can skip to what's important to you and read the rest at a later time. We bought our little puppy from the breeder when he was a mere 6 weeks unlike the standard 12 weeks, which I was actually a little nervous about. However, the book was right on the money with instructions on what to expect when picking him up from the breeder to his very first night in his new home. We just recently took the little guy to his first appointment with the vet. That too is covered in the book! The vet was impressed with how much I knew about the breed and puppies in general. I have this book to thank for that. I really would have been lost without it.

If you buy only 1 Yorkie book, get this one!.......2004-01-13
I doubt any breed has as thorough a book on it as does this book for Yorkshire Terriers. This is a complete book resplendant with photographs and information.
Perhaps the only thing not discussed is how to make a profit with Yorkies. I suspect nobody makes a financial profit with these guys, because if they're all like our Buddy, you just could not part with even a single pup!
My wife and I, and those of us at LJ's Breaking Free$ could not be pleased more than we are with this book - Bill Anderson (LJ).
Very complete book of the Yorkshire Terrier.......2001-12-25
This is a very good book. If I could only get one book this is the book I would buy. Book has 17 chapters 346 pages. Covers everything you would want to know about this breed. Lots of colored pictures. Discusses the history, who's who in the fancy, showing, grooming, breeding , selecting puppy , puppy care, career in dogs.

Customer Reviews:
Bailey has just become the newest and possibly the most important member of our family........2005-11-19
Back in February of this year we lost Binki,a Lhasa Apso cross Poodle after 17 wonderful years.Prior to that we had a Dachshund,Max, who spent 14 years with us as our 3 children grew up.So,as we are now seniors, our children are all married, and now that we have 8 Grandchildren;we faced the facts and felt our dog owning days were probably behind us.
That is what we thought,we found Bailey, she has now joined the two of us and getting a new puppy was one of the best decisions we've ever made. She is a Yorkshire Terrier cross Teacup Poodle. She will be small, about 7 pounds, doesn't shed and has all the features of what we could want in a dog.She is 12 weeks old,we've had her over a month, and I believe she finds us acceptable.By this point, you can see Bailey is a pet,a member of the family is more like it,and we have no intrest in breeding or showing.Maybe I should qualify that bit about showing. We do a great amount of showing as a matter of fact, everyone in the neighbourhood has fallen in love with her and we can't complete a 10 minute walk in less than a half hour while showing her off and making friends with every person and dog we meet.
We,as the case of a lot of people who have dogs, tended to operate by trial and error in raising them, heck, didn't it work with the kids? Anyway ,I saw this book and thought maybe I could learn something. You've heard the old saying "You can't teach old dogs new tricks"There is simply no truth to that.I am learning lots and there is much more to be gleaned fom this book.
The book is only 160 pages and covers everything you could or should want to know about Yorkies. It will also be kept nearby for reference in the years ahead.
The book discusses how intelligent this breed is,and we have already seen signs of that.If there is anything that I might fault the book for,it is this.I am a very avid reader, but very disappointed that Janet has given absolutely no attention at all on helping me with teaching Bailey to read.I have already been reading to her,she obviously comprehends, nods at the right time, and even dozes off if the story gets too dull.I am convinced she could easily be taught to read, but for that,I guess I'm on my own.
Like I've already mentioned, and so have a couple of the other reiewers, the book covers a lot about breeding and showing in competitions, but that should not deter you from getting it.All the same principles apply, and your little friend is just as important to you and those around you as a Best of Show is to its owner and the show Judges.
Bailey is a great addition to our family and we intend to give her a lot of happiness and I know she will return any love many times over and that doesn't even take into account the companionship we'll all enjoy.
Oh yeah, one other thing,Carol touches on the cost one takes on with getting a dog;but remember this;
"All it takes is money to buy a fine dog,but it takes love
to make it wag it's tail."
Yorkie.......2005-10-10
Being a new owner, I wanted a more practical book on the breed.
I found the author to be focused on the competitive aspect and
"quality" breeding lines. For someone who was looking at entering dog shows, this would be a useful book. For me, who
was looking for some insight at the pet level, it lacked practical applications.
GREAT for Yorky lover!!.......2005-09-27

A New Owners Guide to Yorkshire Terriers.......2000-01-18
I wish this book had been available when I got my first Yorkie! Very well written; she approaches the subject with common sense --plus it is great fun to read. Super book--super breed!
Best book for new Yorkie Owners out there.......1999-07-13
This is a most comprehensive book, written with humor and obvious delight and love for the breed. I wish I'd had this book when we were training our first Yorkie. I highly recommend this book!

Great tips on grooming, show, breeding, obedience, and many other things about your Yorkie. I think this is a wonderful book and wouldn't trade it for the world.

Helpful- a good guide!.......2002-07-08
This is a really helpful, interesting book about Yorkies, and dogs in general! This is a great book is you're getting you're first dog, or first Yorkshire Terrier! It covers all the basics, and if you're thinking about getting dog this is a great book. Although some things like training would require aditional information, this book is a clear, easy to read guide to owning a dog, more specifically a Yorkie. I have refered back to this book many times in my first year with my dog!
Not as good as 1st edition with Jurgen Grunn as co-author.......1999-07-04
The first edition had better photographs, less obedience information, more on the Yorkshire Terrier, less general information - (which does not apply to Toy dogs usually). In the first edition - which had Jurgen Grunn as co-author, there was a photograph on page 29 which shows the difference between a very young puppy and its dam. This has been extremely useful to show buyers who sometimes wonder, seeing an 8 week-old puppy, if that is a pure-bred Yorkie since it so very different from its parents.
A very basic beginners book for someone researching yorkies........1998-08-24
A very basic book for someone trying to learn a little more about yorkies. Especially good for someone trying to decide if a yorkie is the dog breed for them. Reviews the AKC standard, the basic care, grooming and feeding requirements of yorkies. A very informative book for the novice buyer.

Very little breed specific information.......2006-12-20
The fact that this book is mostly made up of generic dog information is only part of the problem. I picked up this book because I wanted more information on Yorkies specifically. Since Yorkies are so small, there's a lot of stuff that may be different when caring for them as compared to, say, a Golden Retriever. Don't get me wrong; much of that kind of information is universal, and it is helpful to know the things that apply to all dogs. But this book is being sold as a book about caring for Yorkies, and that is what I expected. There are many generic dog care books out there, and frankly, many of them are much better than this one.
Aside from that, this book is poorly written and edited. I found many grammatical and syntactic errors in the first few chapters.
I also have Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies, and I think it is a much better book than this one. Choose that one instead.
Your Yorkshire Terrier's Life.......2006-03-22
Great book for anyone who is planning on getting a Yorkie and an awesome reference for you after you get your Yorkie !! I have had my 2 Yorkies for 4 weeks and have referenced it MANY times. I highly recommend it.
Your Yorkshire Terriers Life.......2006-03-15
Alot of good information I didn't know. Very helpful for someone who has never had one of these unique little doggies. This book probably helped to save my puppies life by describing symptoms of a genetic disease common to Yorkies I kept persuing answers to my dogs unusual behavior. He eventalyy was diagnosed with a liver shunt and under went surgery 2 weeks ago. All is GREAT now.
A lot of health information........2004-06-22
I found this book to be helpful. I am not yet a Yorkie owner but a Yorkie owner in training. This book has a great deal of health-related information about Yorkies, including the standards tips for raising a puppy vs. an adult dog. It was very similar to The Complete Idiot's Guide to Yorkshire Terriers, by Liz Palika, which I liked better for the information regarding potty training and obedience training.
Clear advice for new Yorkie owners.......2004-04-09
I've been researching purchasing a Yorkie puppy (as a pet and companion not to show or breed) and this is the best of the books on caring for the breed that I've read thus far. I started with Janet Jackson's book and the Complete Idiot's Guide to Yorkshire Terriers by Liz Palika. Both are very good, but I found Gewirtz's book to be more thorough for my needs. It doesn't just stress the importance of socialization or obedience training, but tells you the right age to begin these processes. Also, the information is presented in a clear, well-organized fashion. It's simply easier to find the information you need. Obviously, you shouldn't just buy one book on the breed or raising your dog, but this should definitely be on your list.

Book Description
The story of Little Big Dog
The history of the Yorkshire Terrier is truly a rags to riches saga. Originally bred as a ratter, the earliest Yorkies were considerably larger than the glamorous little dogs we are familiar with today, but they were working terriers that provided both sanitation and sport for the Scottish weavers who bred them in England's industrial north. Now a world authority on the breed traces her favorite from its humble beginnings to its emergence as the canine epitome of style. In fourteen chapters, the whole story of the Yorkshire is charmingly told. Chapters on origin, history and standard join discussions of puppies, rearing, showing and breeding. Of particular excellence is the chapter on grooming, so essential to the health and beauty of the Yorkie.

Today's Yorkie, Not Just A Pretty Face.......2000-11-30
Ms. Sameja-Hilliard has captured the versatility of the yorkshire terrier. The book covers everything from your new puppy, to showing and training your yorkie in conformation, obedience, and performance events. History of the yorkie, complete with many photos of the early yorkshire terrier, shows how this breed has evolved. The breed standard is also covered, as well as grooming and health issues. Although this is a Britsh author, American yorkie breeder/judge Betty Dullinger also discusses the American yorkies today in the final chapter. A good book for any yorkie enthusiast. Easy reading, nice layout, and lots of pictures to correlate with the text.
