a surprising find.......2007-03-08
This book, although small is jam packed with the greatest information for basenji owners. It is a great way to introduce the basenji to prospective owners and makes an affordable gift to send home with puppies and their new owners.
Helpful, informative book for the first time Basenji owner.......2007-02-14
This book is a keeper for my library. It explained a lot about the quirks, care, mating and whelping of the basenji (we are about to breed with our gorgeous girl). Recommended for those on trainer wheels in the breeding and owning of basenjis.
What You Need to Know Before Buying a Basenji.......2006-02-28
After 30+ years breeding, showing and now judging the Basenji breed, we were delighted to discover this wonderful book! Basenjis are an unusual breed, and prospective owners need to learn a great deal before they get one. This book puts into words all the things you need to know (and which Basenjis have taught many owners over the years). . . . . We are unfortunately no longer breeding, but do recommend that anyone interested in the breed study this book cover to cover before they purchase a dog.

Not a good buy..........2007-07-18
I recently bought this book expecting to find out all that wasn't accessible online, only to find that it doesn't really say much. The author owned many basenjis, and knew about as much as I did after a few minutes of google searching the basenji. Check out My Smart Puppy, its a general book but its the only thing that I can say relates to, and has helped me with my basenji, Simone.
A great book for a great breed of dog!.......2007-03-23
A true wealth of information on the amazing Basenji breed. The book provided a concise history of the dog and its migration to other parts of the world. My only complaint is that the pictures were not in color only b&w. Still worth the purchase price. If you are lucky enough to own a Basenji, buy the book. Thinking about owning a Basenji, buy the book and read another. Basneji's are truly unlike any other dog and deserve a person who knows, accepts and appreciates their distinct differences.
A TRULY BEAUTIFUL, EXOTIC DOG.......2002-03-06
This book is sure to delight everyone, from people who breed and show basenjis to the owner of the cherished pet.
A long established breed originating from Africa, the basenji is indeed a distinctive dog. Basenjis have deeply wrinkled foreheads, double curls in their tails, clean themselves like cats, run like antelopes and yodel instead of bark. They can also shed tears. Basenjis are known for their determination, loyalty to their owners and their keen hunting ability. Their cleanliness, natural beauty and gracefulness make them cherished pets indeed.
This book is a good teaching tool for folks who own basenjis, a good resource tool for folks interested in basenjis and certainly a well written wealth of information.
From the author of "August Magic", Veronica Anne Starbuck.......2000-08-08
An excellent resource on Basenjis for both the novice and the experienced owner!
Great history and health facts........2000-03-21
A must for a Basenji owner. The pictures are great, good tool to explain the African history to friends. The historical aspect is the most compelling to me, a good coffee table book unless your Basenji pulls books off the table !

Customer Reviews:
Not recommended for the first time basenji owner..........2007-02-14
This book went on a bit about specific basenjis and their blood lines. I found it a bit technical to tell you the truth. The first couple of chapters were excellent though where the author describes the personality of the fabulously independent basenji dog. Probably great if you are a breeder or seriously into the history of the basenji.
All about basenjis.......2004-12-19
If you own a basenji or are curious about them, this book is for you!
Coe tells us plenty about basenjis, which are native to eastern Zaire. These expressive dogs rarely pant, they rarely bark, and they rarely are obedient. More than any other dogs, they will look you straight in the eye. And they yodel in approval when you show up or offer food.
These 30-pound dogs are very handsome, as they each sit like an Anubis. A black-and-white one will appear to be wearing a perpetual tuxedo, with ears up and a curled-up tail. They are fast and energetic escape artists. They are short-haired, and dislike cold or wet weather. One problem is that many of them have a tendency to nip at people without provocation.
The author has a discussion of top show basenjis, with pictures of several of them. And advice for those who want to take their basenjis hunting, or racing (lure coursing), or enter their dog in obedience competitions (good luck!). And there's plenty of advice on breeding basenjis and caring for them.
It's a great book for those who are interested in this unusual breed.
BEAUTIFUL, EXOTIC HOUND.......2002-02-16
The basenji is a beautiful and exotic dog. They are very distinctive looking from their high, wrinkled foreheads to their doubly curled tails. Swift and long legged, the basenji moves with the grace of an Impala (the antelope, not the Chevrolet). Basenjis laugh and make a yodeling sound instead of barking. They also don't shed. Females come into season once a year whereas other breeds come into season twice a year.
Basenjis have a long established history. They were the beloved pets of ancient Egyptian nobility. They figured prominently in art and Egyptian culture. Anubis, the Egyptian God of the underworld had a basenji head. Basenji shaped footstools and paintings of the exotic dog graced Egyptian homes and can now be found in museums.
Basenjis were brought from Africa to Europe in the 1930s and have since become a loved and recognized breed worldwide.
This book is a treasure trove of history about a delightful ancient breed. The pictures alone will delight any reader. Basenjis are truly special, lovable dogs.
Excellent resource on the history.......2001-12-18
This is a must have anyone that loves the Basenji. It is filled with an excellent history of the Basenji breed.
Best book on Basenjis.......2001-11-03
I own and love these dogs. This book helped a lot in answering many questions about the breed. A must for any Basenji household.

Candle will touch your heart........2004-05-08
Candle is a gentle, refined Basenji who "brought a glow into human hearts when she was near." Her story explains several Basenji physical traits as relating to the birth of Christ and her journey with the wise men. This must have been written by someone who loves a Basenji as much as I love my Basenji companion. The care given to the illustrations and the joy within them captures the Basenji spirit and soul. It may seem like a child's Christmas story but anyone who loves a Basenji will delight in it. It is a small cost for something that brings deep joy and although I bought it on a whim it has become one of my most treasured books. If you know a Basenji lover, scoop this one up.
Touching story for basenji lovers of all ages.......2003-01-31
This story is not only wonderful for children, but also adult basenji lovers. A must for ever family who has ever had or known a basenji. Candle will find a place in your heart forever!
WILL LIGHT THE WAY TO FAITH.......2002-02-14
A basenji friendly household boasted of a pair of breeding basenjis and their two adorable puppies. The senior basenjis told their puppies the story of Candle, a basenji ancestor who really did show everyone the way.
An African breed that boasts of a more than 2,000 year history, the famed "barkless" dog (basenjis yodel and make laughing noises instead), these dogs were the loved pets of Egyptian aristocracy and nobility. The story of Candle takes place in Egypt.
A lovable young basenji named Candle is the adored pet in a royal household. Basenjis, naturally intelligent and curious were aware that something wonderful and miraculous was about to take place. The "basenji network" were aware that the days of excess and idolatry were soon to be challenged; a miracle was on the way.
Candle and her owner, a young Egyptian gentleman saw the Star shining brightly in the East and knew they had to follow it....
Readers will yodel with delight as well. This is truly a wonderful family bonding book and it is certainly a beautiful illustration of love and faith. I can't recommend it highly enough. I love it! The lovely illustrations and the gentle story will captivate readers of all ages.
Candle will light a path to the hearts of all who read her story.
Veronica Anne Starbuck, author of "August Magic" on "Candle".......2000-08-08
A delightful story for all ages, this beautifully illustrated tale of the little Basenji who shares in the joy and wonder of the first Christmas is truly a timeless classic!
Sweet book for Basenji loving children........2000-03-21
A must for a Basenji lover's library.
Book Description
The "barkless dog of Africa," the Basenji comes to America via the jungles of the Congo. Unique not only for his yodel-like voice, this affectionate and aristocratic canine possesses the grace and cleanliness of a feline, the hunting instincts of a terrier, the speed of a greyhound and the smarts and naughtiness of a typical teenager. As a family dog, companion, weekend sports dog and show dog, the Basenji is a delightful choice for the experienced, patient owner, willing to devote the necessary time to raise and train this sensitive, independent canine.
Sighthound author, judge and breeder, Juliette Cunliffe provides an insightful retelling of the Basenji's origins and development in Africa as well as the breed's rise to fame in the US. The breed's characteristics and breed standard are presented in addition to excellent advice about selecting, raising and house-training a puppy. All Basenji owners will welcome the author's helpful chapters on everyday care, including feeding, grooming and exercise, and obedience training and problem-solving based on a positive training and commonsense approach. This book is the responsible first choice of every new owner of a Basenji.

Curly Tailed Yodelers.......2007-09-17
Basenjis are exotic African dogs, long hailed as the Barkless Dogs of Africa. The basenji has a long history - they were the loved and doted upon dogs of the ancient Egyptian noble gentry. Basenjis are a part of Egyptian art - basenjis were featured in paintings; people had basenji shaped footstools and Anubis, the God of the Underworld had a basenji head. (Egyptologists maintain Anubis had a jackal head as a jackal was a scavanger. In looking at the drawings of Anubis, he does indeed have the head of a basenji).
These beautiful dogs with the double curl in their tails are indeed distinctive - they laugh, cry and make a yodeling sound. Females come into season once every year. Basenjis don't shed or smell and they clean themselves the way cats do. These exotic dogs move gracefully and are known for their loyalty to their owners. Readers will come away with a wealth of information about this exotic dog and the breeding standards and care these curly tailed dogs require.

Compelling, Intriguing, and Well Worth the Time!.......2007-04-10
The Basenji Revelation is an exceptional book. The horror portion of the book is genuinely scary. The author uses a combination of heart-pumping
action scenes, mythological references, and rich vocabulary to make the reader feel each action of the protagonist. An example is the nightmare Maggie has right before her husband lapses into his first public display of madness. For me, this episode remains one of the rare, truly frightening pieces of literature I've personally read. However, horror was not the only thing that attracted me to this book. I've been toying with the idea of getting a basenji breed for about a year. I
wanted to learn more of this particular breed, especially about its origin. When I searched online, I found good information on Wikipedia and there I read about Simon Cleveland's book. The book is rich with historical and mythological details about the breed and its link to the Egyptian culture and religion. What's really fascinating is how the author links modern society with the ancient people. In the character of Sam he reveals more than just a burnt out workaholic with mental issues. Sam is a product of the impacts of modern technology and cultural values. The wife's character, Maggie, symbolizes the natural human response to mental illness, mainly the desire to help and the confusion or lack of knowledge on how to achieve that. The book never failed to entertain me. The end is probably what I found the most compelling. It suggests much greater symbolic meaning to the book than the dramatic conclusion and I think that any reader would be impressed with it.
I thought it was amazing.......2006-06-16
I can still hear the call of the Basenji. I have a basenji in fact. No wonder it's called the barkless dog, it sounds like a female crying. This book gives a new meaning to mythological horror. It's both a contemporary mystery and psychological thriller, except it has a fully developed historical research to tie it nicely to the overall story. Before I bought it I read one of the reviews below that said something like: Try not to read it with the lights off and something about giving you the shivers. Both are very true. In one of the scenes where the psychologist is alone with the Basenji in the middle of the night, boy it freaked me out. Does anyone know anything about the Rosetta stone? Are the creature's phrases really based on the Demotic and Coptic languages from the ancient Egypt? Wow, what a book.
Hungry for horror in the style of 'The Mummy'? Look out King.......2006-06-03
This is one of the best books I've read in a while. The story seizes you immediately from the start and before you know it, you're turning the last page. This author has a wild imagination, that's for sure. There's a fully developed horror story around a 6,000 year-old Egyptian deity and the final revelation made the heirs on the back of my neck stand.
The way he explains some of the scenes, I felt as if I was part of the action. Definitely gets a high score in my book.
reader from pa.......2006-04-14
I found this book an intruiging read. I disagree with another reader about giving the breed a bad name. I own a basenji myself, and anyone that owns or has been around them knows they're sweet, clever, silly little dogs. I don't think any less of St. Bernards because of "Cujo".
Powerful symbolism - frightful yet thought provoking.......2006-02-09
There are few books written in the horror genre that deserve special attention. These are the treasures that possess both the power to frighten and the capacity to compel by responding to the reader's expectations and fears. The Basenji Revelation is one of these rare treasures. Simon Cleveland had fashioned a powerful drama, which although supernatural in its core never escapes actual human reality. The story is quite interesting. It combines elements of both the mythical and the modern as it charms the readers with a rich history. In the end, the author's message goes beyond the unexplained. It leaps forward in search of the symbolic nature of the super human - the one who ultimately becomes aware of all life's mysteries. And it is this leap forward that transitions the Basenji Revelation out of the routine realm of horror and marries it with the one of magical realism. A very, very good read indeed.

Not very specific for Basenji owners..........2003-12-14
I will not ruminate about what the previous reviewer said. I will just say that they are absolutely correct when they say this is a "formula book" save a few pages specifically about this breed and most of the pictures are of basenjis.
I just wanted to add that if you have any doubt of what I speak, I will just say that pages 100-106 describe ways to "modify the behavior of your dog" and are about how to stop your dog from BARKING and waking up the neighbors!!!
I think that's enough said on that. If you have or have been around a basenji, you know that this is a preposterous thing to spend four pages on... :-)
not my first choice.......2003-08-07
This book has a very small section that talks specifically about Basenjis.
The rest of this book is a formula book. The remaining pages are
a standard text of average quality advice on dog care some of which
may be irrelevant to Basenjis.
The
publisher has one for many breeds and they are all exactly the same-save
a small section on the specific breed. If I had to choose only one
Basenji book it would not be this one. I would Choose Susan Coes
and Elspet Fords would be my second. I also own Stacked and Moving
A unique book worth owning, but perhaps only to one interested in the
showring.
So I would say that owning Basenjis by Jack Shafer, and R. Mankey
is nice, there are by the way nice color photos, but not if you need a definative text on the subject
of Basenjis.
BEAUTIFUL & EXOTIC.......2002-03-09
Basenjis are beautiful, exotic African hounds who have a history that spans upward of 2,000 years. The basenji is a very unique breed of dog indeed. Basenjis can shed tears, they yodel instead of bark and run with the grace and speed of antelopes.
A beautiful, unusual dog, the basenji is singuarly distinct in having a wrinkled forehead, a tightly curled tail (usually the tail is a double curl) and long graceful limbs. Basenjis clean themselves like cats and female basenjis come into heat once a year.
This wonderful book gives a good overview of this very unusual dog. It is something all dog lovers, not just basenji lovers will treasure.

BASENJIS ARE BEAUTIFUL.......2002-03-09
This beautifully illustrated book brings the basenji to the forefront of readers' consciousness. The exotic African dog is indeed unique; basenjis shed tears, they yodel instead of bark and they clean themselves like cats. A spirited hound, the basenji is also notable for having the grace and agility of an antelope. Female basenjis come into heat once a year.
The basenji, a long established breed has a history spanning some 2,000 years. This book does an excellent job of introducing readers at large to this exotic little dog. From breeders and people who show their basenjis to the happy pet owner, this book is really a treasure indeed.
Informative!.......2000-05-22
If you are looking for a book to give you the necessary information to show or breed basenjis, this is the book for you! There are lot's of great pics and illustrations given of good and poor breed standard. The book does contain some information on temperament but is mostly about what makes a dog a champion!
