A worthwhile study guide.......2006-11-29
People studying for Cisco certification exams have always been able to get solid study guides directly from Cisco Press. Like its brethren, the third edition of the CCSP SNPA will give the student a well-mapped path for preparing for the certification exam.
The book, like the exam, covers the configuration and functionality of PIX 500 series firewalls and the ASA 5500 series Adaptive Security Appliances. It begins with chapters in network security and firewall technologies in general, then describes Cisco's technologies in particular. Subsequent chapters deal with controlling access; failover; VPNs; authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA); and intrusion protection functions together with rarer protocols. The book teaches concepts and CLI commands first and only gets to the use of the GUI, the Adaptive Security Device Manager (ADSM), later. It ends with a case study that brings everything together.
Each chapter begins with a set of multiple choice questions to enable readers to determine whether they know the material well enough to skip the chapter. Each chapter ends end with a summary section and another set of questions to reinforce what the student has just learned. These require short answers rather than simply choosing or guessing the right one. Students who can provide the answer to these without looking them up can be confident that they have mastered the material.
The book is not perfect. The vocabulary used for the overview of network security will be strange to many: how many people refer to vertical and horizontal scans, for instance? That may be less a problem with this book than with Cisco, but the difficulty created is needless.
One chapter, on VPNs, has a scenario, complete with fill-in-the-blank configurations, that may be as close to hands-on as a reader can get without opening a command prompt. Similar exercises to accompany other chapters would have been useful.
Some concepts could use fuller explanations. RIP and OSPF and the differences between link status and distance vector routing protocols in an early chapter, and then voice over IP protocols later are only touched on. As this is not a book on routing or VOIP, the editors may have considered it wasteful to spend more ink on these topics, but at least a reference or two to go to for fuller explanations would be welcome to many readers.
As with most Cisco books, the prose style is serviceable and generally clear. It gets the job done. Unfortunately, the text is marred by sporadic explosions of typos, which occur just frequently enough to be slightly jarring.
The CD-ROM contains an electronic copy of the book, copies of chapters of other Cisco Press books, a printable version of the appendix with the questions that appear in the text with their answers, and a test engine with 281 questions. The last is from BOSON, long the standard for CISCO practice tests. The questions include those from the text and 98 more. With the questions divided among 19 categories, this is a minimal amount that many will find inadequate, but more questions can be purchased through a link found on the CD.

Good book with tons of errors.......2006-10-22
It's a very good written book, but the shame is: too many errors in the book. And the worse part is, in ciscopress site, the errota didn't include any of them. The "Do I know This already Quiz" is terriblly written, and the answer keys are wrong all the time. Very funny the end of Chapter Q&A, same question, but the answer is one that's deemed to be wrong in the "Do I know this Already Quiz". The end of Chapter Q&A normally is the right answer.
Another ridiculous part is: For example, a question with for choices, A state this, B state that, D says both A and B correct. for this kind of question, the answer key sometime is ABD, sometime is AB, sometime is D. You got the point both A and B are right, but when you check the keys, you found you got wrong answer, it's super annoying.
Another major drawback of the questions is: too many trivial questions, like which model has how many interfaces etc. Is this really the purpose of this exam? and the answer seems to be yes. Because I just took the exam, passed it, and I saw a lot of such questions in real exam. Why should we mechanically memorize those models?
Title........2006-09-06
This book only seems to prepare for about half the SNPA test and offer a lot of other information that's nice to know but not needed. One thing people might want to study is the stuff that has only one sentence written about it. For instance, that's great 5 pages might be written on phase 1 and 2 for VPN set up, but if there's one sentence written about how the "nat" command affects anything at all to do with VPN, study that.

Network security consultant Michael Gibbs shares preparation tips and test-taking tips and points out common areas of weakness and places where refresher information comes in handy. The companion cd-rom offers a testing engine for either individual topic areas or the overall, timed exams and allows readers to self-test their knowledge, while chapters survey VPS remote configuration, Cisco access control servers, and more. A top pick students will appreciate.

As anyone who has ever experienced a virus or network break in clearly understands, network security has become a major part of the management of any network that is exposed to the outside world. And I doubt that there is a major network anywhere that doesn't have at least some Cisco equipment. To go with the Cisco equipment has come an examination based certification procedure. This began with the CCSP (Cisco Certified Secure PIX firewall). As the equipment has progressed so has the examination. This book covers the current SNPA (Secure Network PIX ASA) exam, 642-522.
This third edition of this book builds on the successful format established with the earlier editions. Each chapter begins with a 'Do I Know This Already?' quiz. If you know the answers to these questions, you can skip or at least minimize your study of this chapter.
If you decide to study the chapter it is organized with a tell them what you're going to tell them, then tell them, then, tell them what you've told them and conclude with another quiz.
The CD supplied with the book contains an electronic copy of this book. (which I find very helpful to use on airplanes where I have to carry a laptop PC but can leave the heavy book at home.) There is also an electronic testing engine with a sample of the exam with more than 200 questions in various formats to prep you for the real test.
The earlier editions have develped an excellent reputation for successfully passing the exam. There is every reason to believe that this will continue with the current book.

Not the easiest exam, but a must have book for me.......2007-04-27
This one of those strange exams, well thats my opinion anyway, the subject is a bit all over the place, and for me i found i really did need this book for coverage.
I don't know if i will use it as a reference in the future, but it did succeed in helping me gain my pass.
Disappointing.......2007-02-23
I've purchased numerous Cisco Press certification books over the years. This one is very disappointing from the editing stand-point. Command formats are listed in the text throughout the book and when the command is used in a configuration example, it differs from the format in the text. You are left to decide if there is a hyphen between words or a space. I found that I needed to consult Cisco's web page very often for clarification. This should not be required when you purchase a book that is supposed to prepare you for an exam. You're left feeling uncertain if what you've learned is correct and that's not what you want before an exam. The test engine that is included has even more errors than the book. The "correct" answers to numerous questions are blatantly wrong. There were several questions where you are told to make 3 selections and the test engine is expecting 4. Some questions wouldn't accept any answer, so the correct answer was no answer. Also, you are asked to determine the results of a configuration, but no configuration is displayed. Very disappointing. I haven't taken the exam yet, so I don't know if this book was worth the price/effort.
A Must Have!.......2006-03-30
I'm an old CCIE/CNE/CISSP, and I have purchased dozens of technical study guides over the years. I believe this is one of the better exam certification guides.
Additionally, it contains real world examples and explanations. I refer to this book often in my day-to-day operations.
If you want the best study guide out there for the SNRS exam, then you need not look any further. Good luck!

Best reference for the exam. It covered everything necessary for the SNRS exam. I wish all the books gave me as much information as this for the specific exam. Nice job!
CCSP SNRS Exam Certification Guide.......2006-03-14
This Exam Certification Guide is intended for candidates preparing to take the SNRS Exam in pursuit of CCSP certification. The book covers all of the exam objectives posted on Cisco.com sufficiently. The accompanying CD provides the book in PDF format, as well as a practice test engine to help the reader validate his/her comprehension of the material. Like other Exam Certification Guides from Cisco Press, each chapter starts with a "Do I Know This Already?" and ends with a additional Q&A.
The book is divided into eight parts, with each part containing multiple chapters. The book begins by providing a good overview on security from both a technical and organizational perspective. The second part gets into router and switch management basics. Assuming that someone reading this book would already have a CCNA level of understanding, the sections on router configuration modes seem unnecessary. If the reader finds themselves needing this information, they might find the remainder of the book a little difficult. The third part covers AAA. This section does a good job of explaining the topics, and then provides configuration examples to backup learning. Also, the included troubleshooting section provides the reader with good examples of common mistakes. The fourth part is titled IOS Firewall Feature set. The material again does a good job of providing a surface overview, but might leave the reader needing to supplement their study for the exam. The chapter on Mitigating Layer 2 Attacks was particularly helpful, as this is an area that is often overlooked in production networks today. The fifth part, VPN, covers various ways to establish VPNs using Cisco IOS. My only complaint about this section is that while there are snippets of configuration throughout, there is lack of final configurations at the end of the chapters. I would like to information on GRE and DMVPN, but as these are not exam objectives, I understand their omission. Part six specifically covers management through SDM. I would have liked this section to be more in depth, but it does adequately cover the exam objectives. Part seven covers final scenarios. Again, the lack of final configs for each section is a negative to me. The final part is the appendix providing answers to all of the "Do I Know This Already?" and the end of chapter Q&A.
Formatting of the book could have used a little more attention. There are many instances where diagrams, examples, etc., are not on the same page as the explanation causing the reader to flip pages back and forth. While this is a small detail, and not related to depth of content, it is annoying.
While I think the book does a good job of meeting its intended purpose, preparing an individual to take the SNRS exam, it does not provide adequate detail to serve as a field manual or deployment guide.

It's a tough market these days for network consultants, but the one commodity there's lots of is fear. There's loads of stuff to be scared of. Which means that canny network experts can get some work by offering to protect computer networks from unauthorized access. It's best to earn a certification before you go touting yourself for work, though. Cisco Systems' Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced (CSPFA) rating is a good vendor-specific one, and is sure to help get you in the door for security work at places with lots of Cisco equipment. CCSP Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced Exam Certification Guide brings you up to speed on the PIX firewall line, with emphasis on the coverage of the CSPFA exam.
Like the other books in the Cisco Press certification line, this one reads like an instructor's lecture, albeit frequently supplemented by reference material (command documentation, for example). The authors begin with material that should be familiar to a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or anyone else with basic network grounding, and build from there into the more specialized areas of VPNs, NAT, and access-control lists as they pertain to PIX environments. As always, you'll learn more if you have a testbed PIX firewall on which to try the procedures that appear in the text (the companion CD-ROM holds no simulator, only a quiz program), but this book gives test candidate a great base from which to work. --David Wall

This book was worthless..........2005-04-21
Just took the exam and passed - barely. If I hadn't taken the actual Cisco training class I would have failed and this book would have been the prime reason. The exam was MUCH more in depth on a NUMBER of areas that the book did not even being to go deeper then about a paragraph into, if at all. This book was poorly written, difficult to use, the examples were horrible and it CERTAINLY WAS NO USE FOR EXAM PREP - DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.
The Pix FOS is already pretty unfriendly (compared to IOS) and a book that didn't just show you the help output and then break the option into tables (which looked lifted from CCO) would have been a big help - you know, something with actual explanations of how things are configured an such. This book was nowhere near this and a real disappointment, especially since it's a "Cisco Press" book. What the book turned out to be is was a hack job that was poorly put together, inaccurate, and useless for exam prep - which is horrible since it is marketed as a CCSP "self study guide." There were even examples that were wrong within the book.

Fair at best, very poor practice exam.......2004-04-12
The study guide is only moderately valuable, and sometimes confusing. Worse, the practice exam is sometimes blatantly incorrect.
Example: What kind of protocol is easiest to spoof?
Possible answers: UDP, TCP, ICMP, All protocols, or DNS
The "correct" answer is "TCP is the more difficult to spoof..."
I've found a few other errors, making the practice test virtually useless. In the example, the given answer is correct for a different question. In some cases, the answer is actually wrong for the question.
I'm disappointed that an "official" study guide from Cisco Press has so many issues.
Don't waste your time.......2004-03-05
I can't add much to the comments already posted here, except to support the view that this book is a waste of time and money. It will NOT help you pass the exam. Even if it covered all the material (in my estimation, it omits ~20% of the required curriculum), it still simply copies or paraphrases the (free) Cisco Configuration and Command Reference guides.
At best it's a waste of money, at worst it will give you a false sense of what is required for the exam.
Incomplete and Replete with Errors.......2004-02-17
The previous reviewer's comment that it's better than nothing is pretty accurate. The book is not organized with the exam objectives in mind, and it appears to have undergone no quality control checks whatsoever. To call some of these mistakes typographical errors is graciously optimistic.
Even the accompanying practice exam was flawed. About 10 minutes into it I got a question whose "correct" answer logically contradicted the parameters of question itself. I'll never know how good or bad the remainder of the exam was, because I immediately uninstalled the program in disgust.
My biggest complaint, however, is that too much material covered on the exam is missing from the book. Sure, the book will get you throught he basics of setting up a PIX firewall, but topics such as the Firewall Services Module, the CiscoWorks Firewall Management Console, and the Auto Update Server are conspicuously absent. And these topics were prevalent on the exam.
With that said, I did pass the exam on the first attempt. But it was thanks to some of the other practice exams and source materials that I was able to make up for the deficiencies and errors in this book. Had I taken this book as gospel, I have no doubt that I would have failed.
I need these study guide books to get me through the CCSP certification, but I am certainly going to avoid anything else by these two authors if possible. Frankly, I'm not sure they understand how some of these technologies (e.g., VPN protocols) really work. They certainly haven't explained them well to me.
Fair Reference... Poor Study Guide.......2004-01-19
CCSP Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced - Exam Certification Guide by: Greg Bastien and Christian Abera Degu is a good source for anyone that is interested in setting up and configuring a Cisco PIX. I found page after page of useful information without all the unnecessary filler introduced by other authors.
If you have no experience with a Cisco PIX this book is a good start. It can help you select the proper model for your needs. Each model has different features that may or may not be important to your use. The differences are outline in a model by model summary followed by a complete comparison chart of the all the models.
Once you select your model you will need the basics to get going. The authors do a great job of covering the commands that you will need to get started. Examples highlight the usage, which helps when there are multiple arguments available for a single command.
As you progress through the book the subject matter increases in complexity, but the authors keep you informed. Cicso has built in the power to their operating system, but unleashing that power needs some explaining. The advanced commands are helpful since there are times when difficult configurations push us to the test. Having the insight to the power and proper use of certain commands and configurations help us overcome these obstacles.
I was impressed with the scenarios provided in the end. I like the way that the authors challenged me with their configurations and tested my skill and understanding. Their explanations have helped me to reconsider and change my configuration and setup to provide for a more secure network, which is something that we all need these days.
On the book's negative side I found quite a few errors in spelling and grammar. It seems to have been poorly proofread. I found the word "network" spelled "netowrk." How does that get by? My spellchecker corrected it for me, but somehow this made it passed the spellchecker used by the authors and was not caught by the proofreaders.
There are a few sections where I found some copy and paste errors. For example in the section regarding the Cisco 520, the body text reads "Cisco 515" in error. This leads to some confusion if you are not alert. It could easily lead you to believe the Cisco 515 can function the same as a Cisco 520, which is not always the case.
Another annoyance is the fact that some of the figures in the book do not use the same IP scheme as what is written in the text. It is as if the scenario or configuration was written and the figure was not updated to correspond, or vise versa. This makes it a little hard to follow along. I found it easier to correct the figure with a pen then to change the text.
Overall I feel that the book is a good reference guide, but does not make the cut for a study guide. There are too many errors that are distractions while studying. I should not need to hold a pen in my hand as I read along to make corrections. That is the job of proofreading.

Wonderful Book!.......2001-05-11
Since I had already spent countless hours on the Internet searching for information on the care of degus, I thought that this book may be a waste of my time. I ordered it anyway (the price was right & afterall it was the first published English book on degus). I was extremely surprised at the amount of information contained in the book. Those who already own degus will not be disappointed, and will be surprised at some of the information (which may be contrary to what some internet sites claim) in it. For those who are new degus owners, or thinking about becoming an owner, I dare say that you should not consider buying such an exotic pet until you have read this book. The book "Degus" references many scientific studies from which some of the information was gathered. This book will certainly improve your understanding of your pets needs, and the quality of care that you provide them. :)

The complete range of essential knowledge has been brought together by the author, including virtually everything that one needs to know to select, house, feed, breed and identify common problems with this fascinating group of South American rodents. A Health Check Sheet gives Degu lovers an easy table of signs to look for that suggest medical problems, but this manual is really about how to prevent them. This manual is loaded with illustrations on housing, feeding, handling and medical care. A particularly useful section describes all of the typical places in the household that represent hazards to these agile little creatures. This book argues that refugee migration has not only resulted from the social (re) construction of the state as territorial sovereign entity but also from the (re) construction of the international states-system with all its injustices, inequalities, exploitation and uneven development within which Africa has seriously been marginalized. The refugee is an integral part of state and identity construction, the art of imagining and socially producing the state's territorial universal order. Thus, in order to understand the refugee crisis better it is imperative to understand the process of modern statecraft and the role it plays in the production of refugees and vice versa. In this process of modern statecraft, as the author argues, African countries have failed to (re) construct political communities based on unity and purpose. Instead they remain fragmented into different sub-national communities. Political leaders and elite have also not succeeded in creating new principles of political accountability, which correspond to their newly independent countries. In addition, postcolonial nationalist leaders have failed to create deeply rooted national identity over and above sub-national identities. The process of European-styled state building does not hold as a universal idea in Africa, and the institutions and structures of the existing postcolonial states have collapsed producing huge refugee flows. However, in order to understand contemporary politics in Africa, the prevailing crisis, and the resulting refugee migration more fully, this book argues that it would not be enough to focus only on the state per se since the post-colonial state is the result of complex factors and process, both precolonial, colonial and postcolonial-and involves the construction of political community, political accountability, national and sub-national identities, and the complex and never-ending process of statecraft.

Octodon degus, a social hystricomorph rodent, responds to olfactory cues from a gonadally intact female entrained to a light-dark cycle (LD) by accelerating reentrainment of running wheel activity following a 6-h phase advance of the LD cycle. In this study, we examined the role of ovarian hormones in the production of and responsiveness to olfactory social cues in females. Experiment 1: intact females were sequentially phase-advanced 6 h with photic cues alone, or in the presence of an intact female donor, ovariectomized (OVX) donor, a castrated male, or a castrated male with testosterone replacement. Acceleration of reentrainment occurred only in the presence of the intact female donor while reentrainment was delayed by OVX donors. Experiment 2: OVX females undergoing a 6-h phase advance did not accelerate reentrainment in the presence of an intact female donor compared to reentrainment with photic cues alone. Thus, ovarian hormones are necessary for both the production of and responsiveness to olfactory cues. Experiment 3: OVX females implanted with estrogen-filled Silastic capsules did not accelerate reentrainment following the 6-h phase advance in the presence of an intact donor, whereas animals implanted with a combination of estrogen- and progesterone-filled capsules (Experiment 4) reduced the length of time needed to reentrain in the presence of an intact donor. Therefore, combined progesterone and estrogen are sufficient for responsiveness to the effective olfactory cue in intact donor females. These data clarify that the sex difference in sensitivity to non-photic odor effects on circadian reentrainment is caused by both the testosterone's inhibitory effects (Octodon degus. J. Biol. Rhythms 18 (2003) 43-50) and the enhancing effects of progesterone and estrogen.
