Book Description
Originally designed to be an intelligent, robust working dog, today's Collie, whether clad in its soft, furry Rough coat or in its dense Smooth coat, is a beautiful, appealing dog with a sweet, dignified expression. The Collie excels as an obedient, instantly trainable dog with a near-human personality and devotion to humankind that is second to none. As a companion for a family with children, the Collie has no rival: start the camera rolling, the Collie is the nanny of the dog world, the most loyal friend any child could dream of.
Illustrated with over 135 color photographs, this introductory guide provides discussions on breed history, characteristics and standard, as well as puppy selection, feeding, grooming, obedience training, preventative health care and showing. The new owner will welcome advice about puppy-proofing the home, preparing for the pup's arrival, housebreaking and preventing puppy problems. Helpful hints and important information are highlighted to provide easy access to everything the reader needs to know about life with a Collie from puppyhood to the senior years.

Good Info .......2006-10-26
The book has great photographs very informative, it has lot of important information well organizet easy to read and understand. I found the information I needed for the problems that can be prevented from puppyhood through senior years. Is very practical informative and still fun to read.
Great Visuals.......2006-07-09
I own two rough collies, a tri-colored and a blue merle. This book had great photographs and information regarding the collie. It has great information on plants that collies should stay away from such as the common daisy. Also, it praises the crate method, something I was against until I tried it with the collies and determined they love having their own space.
This book is full of good information about every aspect of owning a collie.
Awful book, full of misinformation.......2005-08-15
I purchased this book because I own a Collie. I am dismayed at the amount of misinformation and disinformation contained within this book. The book is poorly written in parts, which creates contradictions from chapter to chapter. A novice would not be able to purchase and care for a Collie based on the information as it is presented
I am convinced that the author never owned a Collie, nor even spent much time with one. The author states that the Collie requires more exercise than most breeds; this simply is not so. The Border Collie does, but not the Scotch Collie. It requires exercise, to be sure, and it is a large breed dog, but it is less active than a Parson Russell Terrier half its size!
The author is most egregious in the health chapters. The author is pushing a personal agenda that is not only dangerous for the dog, but could result in a dog being impounded by municipal animal control. In one sidebar, the author recommends against monthly treatment with a heartworm preventive, yet almost every municipality (or breeder contract, or adoption/rescue contract) requires the treatment with vermifuge! The author refers to the medicine as "poison" (does she even know that Ivermectin is used for people, I wonder?) and recommends using the vermifuge every other month or every three months, which is not how it is supposed to be used. A dog in poor health due to heartworms may be removed from its owner by local human authorities, and unfortunately, at this stage the treatment may very well kill the dog (the dying worms may put the dog into fatal shock). The author also recommends that in place of conventional veterinary medicine (again, see stipulations regarding dog health that originate from municipalities and contracts) owners should use homeopathic nostrums, which are nothing but water (something diluted millions or billions of times in water is water-- someone who had only high school chemistry can tell you that). She also recommends against the use of prescribed flea and tick preventives, yet never mentions Lyme disease by name (although she identifies the bacterium that causes it). Lyme disease is a menace to people as well as to dogs, and the use of Frontline Plus or something similar on the dog is essential throughout the US.
Yet, she does not mention that the Collie breed is sensitive to certain medicines! Collies are prescribed a non-Ivermectin vermifuge (mine gets Interceptor), Colies should not be given Pepto-Bismol or other bismuth-based anti-diarrheal medicines, and so forth (great information is available on the Collie Health Foundation website, which is not mentioned).
Buy the Collie Concept by Bobbee Roos, it remains the standard book on the Collie breed.

A Bit Too General.......2007-03-25
Some good information, but a lot of the information could apply to any other breed. It's very easy to read and reads quickly. Would have given it 5 stars if it'd been a bit more in-depth and thicker. Good book, just needs to have more in it.
Book lovely - Service slow.......2007-03-18
The book is good for a beginning collie owner. Beautiful pictures. Wish they identified the dogs in the pictures. Took longer than any other order from or through Amazon.

Why should I buy this? .......2007-04-30
Like many breeds, the Border Collie deserves understanding by potential and current owners. I don't feel however this book was intended to do that. A basic dog care book would suffice for most of it and in spending too much time on this, diminishes the challenge and understanding this breed demands of its owners.
The contention of the author that the Border Collie is relatively a new breed is, in my mind patently dishonest. Border Collie records are well documented and go back well over a hundred years, but for the AKC, that decided to recognize the breed recently, it is "recent" and, I presume that is the authors perspective in writing this.
On this point, it should also be noted by the author (but is not) that registered AKC Border Collies were created based on "looks like" and not on herding or intelligence or even the historical records for the breed.
Today, there are two registries that exist competing with each other. Those that are recognized to be Border Collie workding dogs and those that are recognized by the AKC.
New Border Collie Owner.......2007-03-14
This is a very interesting book with a lot of specific information about Border Collies. I have found it to be very helpful, and refer to it on a daily basis regarding the many questions I, as new owner of a BC, encounter when dealing with my young BC. These are very complex dogs, not to be taken on casually, and this book acknowledges their potential difficulties, but also their extreme intelligence and need to work.
affectionate discussion of border collies.......2007-02-24
This book is clearly written by a border collie lover. The photographs are good and have cute captions, there are a number of drawings of the dogs, and the issues of living with a border collie are straight-forward and informative. I loved this book. I keep returning to some of the pictures I enjoyed most.
Border Collies (Complete Pet Owner's Manuals).......2006-11-10
Excellent book which taught me all I needed to know about my new Border Collie. Highly recommended.
Border Collies: Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Breeding, Behavior, and Training.......2005-12-20
This is a great book for first time Border Collie owners. We adopted a dog identified only as a Collie mix from our local shelter. After attending a pet expo and encountering some Border rescue people they insisted he was definitely a Border. I started looking for some books about Borders and after reading this one it really became clear that we do have a Border! I really appreciated the facts of some of the idiosyncrasies of this breed such as how they are not big eaters and how they are such escape artists, something our dog definitely proved in the first days that we had him! While this book doesn't go into great detail on advanced training it is perfect for first time owners and gives a lot of great information.
Book Description
Gray Dawn, a blue collie born in Sunnybank, never does things as the others do, or as the others before him. He is extremely large and awkward, and manages to get into one fiasco after another, much to his Master's chagrin. Early on, the Master is convinced that Gray Dawn is a hopeless case, and is about to sell him to another breeder, despite his wife's protestations. But Gray Dawn is spared at the last moment by performing a courageous deed that wins his Master's heart. He becomes one of the most favored collies in the Terhune household.

A handsome package of an old favorite.......2002-06-03
Gray Dawn is a reissued paperback edition of the stories written by Albert Payson Terhune for The Ladies' Home Journal in 1927 in serial form. Many of us whose childhood spanned the 40's and 50's remember reading about the merle collie with the steadfast, loyal heart who was such a charming personality and unexpected clown. My mother-in-law reread it and remembered that reading Albert Payson Terhune's books about collies had inspired her to begin breeding collies. Her story is not unique. Terhune's tales of collies have touched all readers deeply over the years. It is good to see a lovely reprint of the Gray Dawn stories. My first reading of them came when I received a box of my uncle's childhood literary favorites which included Lad, A Dog, Gray Dawn, and at least eight or ten other Terhune titles. This was back in about 1953. Although Terhune has a reputation as a juvenile fiction writer, his books are not written "down" to children, and they hold continued appeal for the adult audience. There will always be a need for the authentic portrayal of the values of courage, honor, natural beauty, loyalty, and love of life. These are readily found in Gray Dawn, in addition to humour, intricate descriptive detail of natural surroundings, and an overflowing reverence for life. Introduced by Terhune scholar Wayne Lewis, this lovely new edition of Gray Dawn with its full color portrait of the grey collie on its cover is a handsome package of an old favorite ready for rediscovery by yet another generation. Perhaps many readers, like myself, will experience the joy of nostalgia while rereading the vivid pages. Terhune wears well.

No nonsense guide to your border collie.......2007-08-22
This is book #2 for me on raising border collies. I started with what I would call 'Border Collies for Dummies' Your Border Collies Life : Your Complete Guide to Raising Your Pet from Puppy to Companion, which I highly recommend as an introduction to the breed. This book by Marjorie Quarton picks up where the other left off. Ms. Quarton's experience with and deep sensitivity to this breed shows throughout the book. She is so close to the land and the patterns of the dog's life that I want to jump right into the scene with her. That said, for American readers in particular, 'The Working Border Collie' is better read after the primer book has been digested. This book by Ms. Quarton does focus more on working dogs, but I found it 80% or more relevant to the breed in general. I give this book my highest rating, for a combination of content and style. There may be more information than the average owner wants to know about breeding, but I found the material rather interesting even though breeding is not my intent. It will allow me to ask better questions of breeders for my next dog. A nice supplement to this book is the latter section by Carole Presberg, from Massachusetts, on the American border collie. We do view our dogs somewhat differently here than the English/Irish do, and this section gives an American context to some of the breed definition and club/organization topics covered by Ms. Quarton. I confess however to being delightfully amused at times with the core sections written by Marjorie Quarton, in all of their Irish/Englishness; a litte bit of Barbara Woodhouse and James Harriot combined.
i liked the book a lot........1999-06-01
This book was good. It helped me learn things about my dog that I never knew before. I wish I had this book before. If you have a border collie you really need to read this book.

A wonderful Collie book!!.......2002-02-26
I thought this book was great. It was packed with a whole lot of information for such a tiny book. I would recommend this book for anyone who has a collie!! It has everything.. from grooming to little specifics about the breed. This is definately one of the best books to have as part of any dog manual collection!!
A must read for new Collie owners.......2001-12-03
As a previous dog owner, but new to the Collie breed, I found this book very helpful. Collies are just "different" from other dogs, and their care and training has to be treated as such. Information included in this book was a huge help to me as a new collie owner. If you've never had a collie before and are thinking of adding one to your family, buy this book.
Not worth the paper it's printed on........2001-05-10
This book has very little information for someone who already understands how to take care of any dog. Don't waste your money.
Collies are cool.......2001-04-02
this is a pretty good book. I learned a lot from it. It really helps you learn about collies before you get one. I wouldn't have known how to take care of my collie if i wouldn't have read the book. It's a good buy and if you want a collie you should buy this book. It will help a lot.
A Necessary Manual for Collie Owners, New and Experienced.......2000-06-19
What a delightful experience to read this little book. It contains information critical to every owner of a Collie, no matter how long the person has had this beautiful breed. Mr. Sundstrom has touched on virtually every aspect of the Collie from heritary health problems to rescue groups dedicated to finding homes for those dogs who have been abandoned or surrendered to Humane Societies. Had this book been available years ago, as a Collie breeder, I would have given one to each puppy buyer.
Congratulations to Hal Sundstrom and to Amazon for making this wonderful rendering available.

Primer for every first time bornder collie owner!.......2007-08-10
An essential book for every new border collie owner. This book covers all the basics: from puppy selection to rearing, from training to feeding. This IS your reference manual. Call is 'Border Collies for Dummies'. I am new to the breed, and these dogs truly are differernt. So glad to have found this book. Don't let other reviewers steer you away: this book is definitely about border collies. I recommend buying 2-3 books on border collies, since there will be differing perspectives and opinions on some matters. Also, there are unique insights that other breeders/experts bring to raising and owning a border collie. Either The Ultimate Border Collie or The Working Border Collie is a good companion to this book.
Insightful.......2003-10-06
This is a well written, easy to read, guide. The authors are knowledgeable and expressive. Subject coverage is complete and this book is an excellent addition to one's BC library.
Too Nonspecific.......2002-10-14
This book is okay, but I was disappointed to see how much general dog information is included in the book. This information applies to all dogs, not just Border Collies. I've got many books to use as a resource for this type of general info. I am looking for Border Collie specific information and found only a small part of this book dedicated strictly to Border Collies. Very disappointing.
A wonderful book! A real Winner.......2001-03-03
If you have any questions on Border Collies, this is the book to have!I was very impressed. It is filled with all kinds of doggie tips & fun facts. This covers all aspects of this wonderful dog.It includes chapters on why you might want a Border Collie, preparing to bring you dog home, grooming, training, and for those of you who already have a Border Collie, curbing the herding instinct & correcting problems such as barking or biting. A wonderful book to have, I loved it.
A very informative book about Border collies.......2001-02-26
This book is a wonderful book if you want to know all about border collies. It offers a detailed description of all aspects of dog care, breed-specific training tips, and all the facts about Border Collies. If you are thinking about getting a border collie puppy or adult this is a very informative resource. I highly recommend it.
