Handy and Complete.......2005-04-30
Definitely a very good reference guide for any freshwater enthusiast. The mini-atlas has every freshwater species beautifully diplayed in color photo. Under each color photo is a group of symbols. These symbols are defined in the book itself. The symbols convey what water conditions are appropriate, size of tank, food, swimming level, breeding type and level of aggression. The mini-atlas also has separate chapters on breeding, fish diseases, aquarium plants and tank set-up.
The only negative point is that each fish is called by its scientific name. If you desire to know the common name (the name used in aquarium shops) you have to go to the back of the book and search an index of scientific names which then refers to the common name. This process is a bit cumbersome.
All in all, this book is a nice addition to one's personal freshwater library. It's very complete and I find myself referring to it often.
A disappointment........2004-08-19
From the reviews, I expected alot from this book. I know that it is old, but I was really disappointed. The information is not consistent and incomplete. Here are my issues:
(1) All the pictures are grouped (i.e. Ciclids, etc.) together followed by the complete text instead of a picture with text of each kind of fish.
(2) Everything is ordered by scientific name instead of common name. This makes the book less usefull to those who are new to freshwater fish.
(3) Compared to other books, the photographs are not that good. In fact, some of them are out of focus.
(4) The fact guide is totally useless as the information on how to intepret the what the legend means is not clear. For example, you see a temparature guide but not the upper or lower temperature.
(5) With that many pictures the book, I expected the book to focus on different species but instead there are multiple pictures of the same kinds of certain fish just because they have different color scheme.
(6) The biggest complaint that I have is that the information is not consistent and some are missing. Some pictures have both scientific and common names while others have just one name. Some have complete information, while others have partial (i.e. tank size, compatibility, etc.) or NO information at all.
If you are buying this book because you just want something to read, go ahead and buy it. However, if you are buying this book because you are new to the freshwater fish keeping and need information about different kinds of fish to choose from...this book is totally useless. Useless, I say because there are more books out there with more complete information. If you look at the index and can't find the names of the fishes that you commonly see in aquarium fish shops, then the book is useless.
Occasionally difficult, but a great reference.......2002-08-03
Need to know if a certain breed of unusual fish is compatible with, say, your angelfish? Dr. Axelrod knows. This atlas is amazing in it's depth for a "mini-atlas," with page after page of freshwater fish. And then he gets into the real meat of fishkeeping after that! Although it can occasionally be difficult to use (the fish are listed by their scientific name in general, not their common name, which can make looking up a certain fish difficult), all in all this is an incredible book, and one every fishkeeper should have on their bookshelf.
Informative.......2002-02-26
This book was great. The pictures were fantastic and it was very informative. It is simple enough for a child to use.
One of the best resources for the freshwater fish keeper........2000-12-14
This is one of my favorite books. It provides information and more importantly photos on nearly 2000 fish. The information gives you the basics about each fish, how big they get, what they eat, are they agressive, etc. But the best aspect is the photos. With over 1900 photos it is the first book I go to when I want to look up a fish. Or when I'm thinking of what to put in that empty tank I'll often browse through this book looking for neat fish.
This book gives you the most for your money!

Excellent.......2007-06-04
I bought this book when I started getting really into the hobby and I absolutely am impressed with the quality of the photos, how the fish are separated by continent and other useful information. I frequently check back with the names of the fish and where these fish come from. I guess the only not serious complaint is that it does not contain the common name for the fish, only the latin. Although, I could see how hard it could be to list the several common names of each fish, since it's already so huge!
Dr Axelrod's Atlas of Freshwater Aquarium Fishes.......2007-01-10
The book delivered by Amazon was in Excellent Condition.
This Book displays pictures and details of fishes not available in other Atlas I have bought, so it is worth every dime.
Large, clear pictures of all freshwater fishes, great for reference.
Lots of pictures... but what is this fish?.......2006-08-16
I bought this book to help me identify fish. Have it worked so far? No.
First, it only names the fish in latin (scientific) name, which is a little frustrating to me. Sometimes, I need to cross info from other sources to reach the specimen I'm looking for.
Second, you need to know the continent where it comes from.
I've also found some errors in the information. The freshwater stingray, for example, is catalogued as an egglayer, while it's a livebearer fish.
This books is huge, and looks great in your library or stacked in your desk.
Impressive Picture book; useless otherwise.......2006-07-26
This book has changed a lot since the first edition. Mostly, it has removed information and added pictures. LOTS of pictures. It is more of a coffee-table book than any kind of aquarium guide. But even the pictures are of uneven quality. I was shocked that the only picture included for a couple of fairly common fish were of dead, poorly-preserved specimens. Yikes!
The authors' stated purpose for this book is "This book was created with the express purpose of making the identification of fishes easier for hobbyists, aquarists, and scientists alike."
Well, if that was the goal, it fails miserably. The book is organized based on geographic area where the fish originates. Think about it. If you saw a fish and wanted to know what it was, would you somehow instinctively know which continent it came from? Of course not. You might want to identify it based on its colors or shape or whatever. The book does not function as an identification guide.
Although most info has been removed, there is some very terse info below each picture as small text and icons. The text lists info such as pH, ideal water temperature (in Centigrade), maximum adult length (in cm), and minimum tank size (in litres). Although it does not tell you what these mean, any intermediate or higher fishhkeeper should be able to figure it out.
The icons are not particularly clear unless you already know the fish. For example, the icon for egg-scatterer versus livebearer is only obvious if you know what the fish is to begin with. More importantly, I can find nowhere in the book where it actually tells what the icons mean. This is very sloppy.
The index is also horrendous, failing to include a number of entries, and including numerous false entries. For example, the first page entry listed for Scleropages jardini sends you to a page that does not contain pictures of jardini, and in fact is a section for a different continent.
Even the quality of the pictures is uneven. For some fish, the coverage is extensive, with a lot of pictures showing different color strains, breeding colors, and so on. Yet for other fish, the coverage is incomplete. For example, there are three pictures of Silver Arrowana, and all three show just-hatched arrowanas. Why not show an adult? The fish changes as it gets older. Also, there are only four pictures of Astronatus (Oscars), showing only 4 color patterns. It's absolutely shocking to me that the abino and tiger albino forms are not shown. They've been in the trade for well over a decade before this edition was published.
My last complaint is that they have been adding pages by adding them as decimal additions. For example, they added 16 pages of pictures of Swordtails (16 pages!) after page 432, and numbered them as pages 432.01, 432.02, etc. The reason for this, of course, is that it means less work adjusting the index, etc., and 16 pages in one place from a publishing standpoint is easier, because it means not changing the rest of the plates. But from a reader's standpoint, it is sloppy and unforgivable, considering the price of the book.
To summarize, this book contains an incredible array of pictures. On the plus side, it has pictures of many fish you'll find nowhere else. It is massive and impressive. The pages are slick and glossy and the physical production standards are high. On the down side, it is badly in need of extensive, high-quality, detailed editing to correct the numerous glaring errors and omissions.
Frankly, this is overall a hugely disappointing effort and I simply can't recommend plunking down such a high price for this edition.
An Atlas and Little Else .......2006-03-26
"ATLAS" is defined: A volume of tables, charts, or plates that systematically illustrates a particular subject: an anatomical atlas. That's what this book is and nothing else. It has both a scientific name index and a somewhat handy Popular Names index and usually several plates (pictures) of each species. This book can be used for two purposes. If you have the name of the fish, you can find pictures of the species from the indexes. One can also puruse the many pages of pictures and find something that interests them and then go to another book for detailed information. That's about it.
There is some very basic information on the plates given in symbols including pH, hardness, temperature, length, (no ranges given, just apparently the conditions when the picture was taken). Also minimum tank size, feeding, reproduction (i.e. egg layer or something else), lighting, temperament, aquarium set up (i.e. substrate or none; plants or none, etc.) and swimming habits. That is very minimal information. The book does devote 85 pages of pictures to Koi (Cyprinus carpio). I also noted that 2 of the 4 pictures of the Siamese Flying Fox (Crossocheilus siamensis) appear to be wrong as the lateral line does not go into the tail and the edges are smooth. For most aquarium fish hobbyists, this book would be a disappointment. If you are looking for many pictures to aid in identification and little else, then this Atlas is for you.

Only the Best.......2006-02-17
Just as many other tropical fish hobbyists, I have quite a few books-primarily reference books-that I use to identify and learn some essential information about the biology, habitats, and behavior of the fish that I choose to keep.
The Axelrod Encyclopedias are excellent, The Amano books on planted freshwater aquariums are also very good. When it comes to the one reference that I refer to most frequently-it is the Baensch series. They are throrough, contain much more info than any equivalent book, often in the articles that open each volume, and have the best combination of photos, habitat info, and scientific taxonomy on the individual fish specimens than are to be found in any other reference for the general public.
Each new volume expands their usefulness, and although pricey-especially in hardback-they are worth every penny. They are a quality product and not only are indispensible in a practical sense of fish keeping, but add a range of information and credible knowledge that increases anyone's appreciation of this fascinating hobby.
If you are a tropical fish hobbyist, beginner or expert, buy these books!
The best freshwater aquarium reference books I've found.......2005-09-19
Although the preface of Vol. 4 says the species included may not, for the most part, be encountered by the average aquarist, I found several loaches included that we are currently keeping. What I love about the Baensch Atlases is the combination of beautiful pictures and comprehensive text descriptions. Anyone who is truly interested in keeping tropical fish, and learning about them, should have these atlases. Vol. 4 includes a large section on kilifish.

Product Description
This book is written to fill the gap between the simple guides, those small books on special topics, and the big books only a few hobbyists need...and for which fewer have the funds. It offers mega-doses of information, concentrated so that it is informative and interesting. Included in this book are photos of over 600 species of fish and 100 aquatic plants, yet this is not an encyclopedia of fish and plants but a practical guide on the keeping, care, breeding and adaptation of aquarium fish and plants. For both biological and aesthetic reasons, we feel live plants and fish belong together. It is a World Class Atlas for the dedicated aquarist.

Not Sure of All The Hype For This Series.......2007-01-28
This is consistently recommended as the bible for fresh water aquariumists, but to be honest, I'm not sure why. The set-up and tip sections are patchy and sketchy. It is clearly evident that the author's first language is not english. The bulk of the book includes fish descriptions with a lot of irrelevant information, and the overall layout of the book is not user friendly. The technology mentioned is outdated and more focused on European hobbyists. There are some many species that will never be found in even the most elite aquarium stores. It would have been nice to have more in depth information on the 100 most common species instead of a little information on fish that most of us will never own, let alone see. Don't get me wrong, it is not a horrible book. Just really over-rated.

Customer Reviews:
Great for identification and quick reference........2002-05-05
The Baensch Photo Index 1-5 is one of the most recent additions to the fine series of Baensch aquarium books.
Excellent from a technical perspective (a clean, easty-to-follow layout with stunning photography) the book really excells because of the huge amount of information it packs into a small space. It is ideally suited to the task of fish identification, although the sheer number of species listed may make this a daunting task for the beginning hobbist.
Potential buyers should note however that the amount of written information in this book is not as extensive as other volumes. Rather than a deficiency, this has to be viewed as a necessary evil, as the book's aim is to present as much as it can while remaining portable. Even so, the information listed is nothing to scoff at.
This book has become my most used reference source and I highly recommend it to beginner and advanced aquarists alike.
Review of Baensch Aquarium Atlas Photo Index Vols 1-5.......2000-07-08
Stunning. I have never seen so may fish photographs in one book, although information on each species pictured is limited to a few symbols and words, these are functional and in most cases all that is required. Words however are not this books main purpose easy access to visual information is.
For the catfish keeper : 146 catfish pages with usually 6 photograph thumbnails per page = approximately 846 pictures. I didn't count them but I think it's fair to say that's over 500 species all with excellent photographs.
Many rare and unidentified or described species appear alongside aquarium mainstays. This is applicable to all types of freshwater fish which are featured in equal volume.
This book is one big index for the other 5 volumes, but what an index! About 1/3 of the whole book is a common, current and old scientific name index covering all fives volumes and the photo index itself. Now that's useful!
I love this book.

This is a LARGE HEAVY book, with high gloss pages and many photos. Great species book with good commentary - though dated. Should be on the bookshelf of all livebearer hobbyists. General hobbyists who likelivebearers can just use the Baensch Atlases.

outdated.......2007-07-30
most of the photos are old and not very nice - missing are common names and explanation for each genus of common features - behaviour...
I don't reco.
Great reference book, but must know how to use it.......2006-03-11
This book is not for lazy people , have a lot of fishes and information about fishes on it, but you must learn to read this book, because the info is on simbols and the reference is in the index.
Once you know how to use this book, it can be of great help identifying fish ,their origins, foods, care, and needs.
All i have to say is, if you want a book about fishes, and want to learn a lot about them, this is the book that you are looking for.
Nice additional reference, but can't be primary.......2005-05-05
This book has endless pictures and drawings of fish. Many pictures are good, although there are plenty that appear as taken long ago with inferior film and recently scanned. It is a great to find a particular fish, especially if coloration is different. Here, many times there are many different pictures for a single fish to show differences which is very nice.
The book has icons regarding lighting, salinity, foods, etc., for each picture. The icons could o a better job showing compatibility or aggressiveness.
What this book does not have is a description that is very helpful to the aquariust such as "this fish will eat your hermit crabs", "this fish becomes a bully to conspecifics", "this fish may nibble corals" on either the family or species level. The short rundown on each family is not enough.
By all means buy this book to increase your collection, but if it is your first fish book to make selection choices, I suggest you look elsewhere and that is not even considering the price.
Major Help for Newcomers.......2002-10-29
This book was probably designed for intermediate to advanced marine hobbyists. However, I bought it just getting into the hobby and it was invaluable for one reason. It shows every known fish, and as another reviewer says, talks about sociability, smallest tank size (big one), and diet. What was most useful for me was to help me design my ultimate tank as far as colors, types, compatability, etc without ever spending a dime. Well worth the money just for the comprehensiveness.
Complete Disappointment.......2002-05-10
I read the other reviews before I bought the book, and I can't help but wonder if we're talking about the same book. Yes, it has really nice pictures, and yes, it covers a tremendous range of fishes, but the information is way too general to be at all useful. I will admit that my opinions result from being an aquarium owner, but I simply don't see any practical applications here for most of the general public unless you just want to see pretty pictures.
For those who are considering buying this book, I seriously suggest that, if at all possible, give it a quick read and find out what you're truly getting.

If you liked the first book you need to have this one too. Very good continuation to first one. Lots of new fish and plant species and some mistakes done in the first book are corrected in this one.
A 2nd volume to, IMHO, the best all-round aquaria reference.......1998-10-10
A large and recommendable guide to fresh and brackish water fishes and plants, in the style and format of volume 1 (to which it often refers for further information on related species).
Contents:
- A section on aquatic plants both sub-aquatic and emersed, including 22 pages dedicated to the flowers of the plants featured (mostly pictures - from the small and humble to the impressively coloured and shaped). 150 plants are described (according to their count).
- A section on iron and other nutrients: symptoms of deficiencies, fertilisation, CO2 addition and general plant care and choice guidelines (about 10 pages total, includes some pictures of symptoms of common plant problems)
- A section on algae, including description, pictures and control for: blue-green algae (cyanobacteria), diatoms (a.k.a. brown algae), and cluster, beard, green bunch, green spot, black spot, pelt, black brush, filamentous and suspended algae (9 pages, with pictures).
- Some 22 pages on anatomy and physiology of fishes.
- The largest section (almost 2000 pages) describes and contains pictures of some 850 species (again, on editor's count). From time to time a picture of a biotope is included - sometimes with specifications as to the fishy inhabitants, sometimes with miscellaneous comments. The origin of these is quite unbalanced: while South America scores some 17 photos, lake Malawi makes do with 4 (though 2 are underwater ones - the only ones to be so!), lake Tanganyka with just one, Australia with 3 and Asia with 1. The rest go completely unrecorded. To make matters worse most of these are landscape pictures giving little information about the actual habitat of the fish or plants. Only in one picture can aquatic plants clearly be seen (apart from water lilies, that is) - no specific biotope information is given for plants at all.
All in all this is, I believe, a great reference book on plants and fish. It shows many remarkable plants and fish, many of which are not even normally commercialised. Great for the terminally curious and those whose imagination runs ahead of their tanks' possibilities. But not a good source of biotope information (other than short descriptions and hints contained in the individual species descriptions).

Customer Reviews:
best aquarium book.......2005-09-29
This is the best book about fish and plant species that I know. Good stats and very extensive book every way. Pictures are good or at least ok.
Good.......2004-10-29
A really nice reference with lots of useful stats.
Very comprehensive and stylish atlas.......2003-05-28
Anyone looking for a handy reference for freshwater aquarium fish would do well to buy this book. Its small size aids in its active usage, and its index of common and scientific names helps in locating the species you are curious about. It has good pictures and descriptions for all the fish contained within, and you would do well to follow the indications given, as in many cases one is hard-pressed to find any alternate sources of information on rare fish.
For the most part, the translation from German is without error. It is understandable in all cases, slightly awkward in a few. However, there are certain instances where data is incorrect, or pictures switched or missing. These are few, but notably occur with the Siamese Algae Eater and Corydoras julii entries, where there is an incorrect and missing picture, respectively.
Overall, a great fishkeeping resource.
An Excellent Book for Any Aquarist.......2002-09-30
This is a wonderful and consise guide to the amazing variety of tropical fresh water fish. The photographs are clear and descriptions of the various species are informative and helpful. This is the only book I've found helped me identify a previously purchased fish that had been wrongly identified. Information on various plants and diseases are very helpful as well. Everyone with a freshwater aquarium needs this book!
This one toasts the old Axelrod standard.......2002-07-17
The Axelrod atlas was the standard for years, but this one makes that book look bad. The reason: Every fish has a detailed description including origin location, maintenance, food, and breeding. Plus, it lists synonyms and erroneous names the species is sold under.
This is probably the most in-depth, relevant, high-quality single-volume reference book I have found in any field that I have personally researched. Just buy it.
