Book Description
The majestic Great Dane is indeed the giant of the dog world, although his physical size is not the only asset he offers the right owner. The Great Dane excels as a companion for the family and children, providing protection and convincing deterrence; as a personal friend, always responding with outgoing kindness; and as a performance animal, competing in obedience trials and the show ring alike. The Great Dane, of course, comes with his considerable demands as well, requiring an owner with a sizeable yard and pocketbook, plus the confidence to handle 120 lbs. of canine power. This book provides the much-needed information about the Great Dane's remarkable history, an insightful look at the breed's characteristics and standard, as well as puppy selection, feeding, training, and preventative health care.
In addition to an extremely authoritative text, this book presents over 135 photographs in full color, which prove to be as informative as they are attractive. Helpful hints and important information are highlighted to provide easy access to everything the reader needs to know about life with a Great Dane from puppyhood to the senior years.

A Nice Guide.......2007-02-06
My family recently decided to add a dog to our house. All, except the cat, were in agreement. I argued for a Great Dane. I had some friends who raised them when I was a kid and a professor who had one when I was in seminary. I remembered them as being impressing, friendly and faithful. Just to be sure, though, I bought this book to learn a little bit more. I'm glad I did.
The book does a fair job of covering the basics that any dog owner would need to know and does them from the point of view of having a dog that may well be the second largest member of the family. It is common sense to know that a Great Dane can steal food off your counter top a lot more effectively than a Chihuahua but there are other factors that are not so obvious. The book also does a reasonable job of going through the early training process and getting the dog house broken. This turned out to be of less use to us because the dog we obtained was already an adult and had been trained. Still, it might come in handy in the future.
For me, information about the breed was of the most use. This included discussion of temperament, differing varieties and such. After reading it, I felt able to make an informed decision about getting the dog. Clyde is now a loved member of the family and the cat is still hacked off.
This is the Great Dane book you need.......2005-09-30
This is the best Great Dane book that I have read and I've read four recently. We are planning on breeding and possibly showing Great Danes and I have been reading everything I can get my hands on. Not only is this book easy to read, but also the most comprehensive. I also feel that it is the most balanced. Some books are written by dog fanatics and are a little extreme. This book seemed to be very centered with an understanding of reality. It gives good information on conformation (much more than the other books), breeding, training a dog (nice section on housebreaking), and even a little on showing your dog. If you are only going to buy one book on Great Danes, I would buy this one.
Book Description
It was love at first sight. Amid the frenzied barking and prancing of a house full of Great Danes, one pup was shivering in the corner. Gracie. But when Dan Dye reached her, she struggled to her feet like a clumsy foal, raised her forehead to his, and announced, as clearly as if she had actually spoken the words, You know I'm the one. No get me outta here!
By turns funny, moving, tender, and inspiring, Gracie's tale is a treat for every dog lover. There is Gracie's first morning, racing around Dan in the snowy yard. Gracie's first determination to prove to her step-sisters, Dottie the Dalmation and Sarah the Black Lab, that she's one of the girls. Gracie's defiant romance with a pint-size charmer named Byron, a Boston Terrier from the wrong side of the fence.
Then born of necessity, the eureka moment: When Gracie's delicate constitution starts turning into anorexia, Dan teaches himself how to cook, and in three days is baking her the cookies that will spur her appetite, launch Three Dog Bakery, and transform their lives forever.
Courage. Compassion. Kindness. Soul. Tenacity. And joy, above all, joy. These qualities Gracie possessed in abundance, and shared with everyone, human or canine, who had the good fortune to cross her path.

give this poor dog a bone.......2007-09-02
This is a fun, sweet, and eventually poignant story, and an interesting account of the startup of the three dog bakery. I loved to hear about Gracie, and she sure makes the idea of a Dane tempting (I've got GSDs myself). What I couldn't figure out though, was why the emphasis on feeding this poor dog whole wheat flour, fruits and veggies. The author talks about poor Gracie potentially starving to death, while he searches for the perfect "nonmeat, nonchocolate, nonsalt, nonsugar ingredient" and discusses carrots, spinach, bananas, apples, pears, etc. And I'm thinking -- why nonmeat? I mean, dogs are carnivores, after all. Why not give up on the pears and hand this starving dog vanishing into thin air half a raw chicken and see what she does with it and how she makes out?
Perhaps because my dogs are raw fed that I am so puzzled by the non meat reference. They do eat a few Castor and Pollux organic chicken cookies on rare occasions (we don't have a Three Dog bakery around here) but the first ingredient even of those is chicken liver, not grain flour, which I can't honestly see how dogs could need or want, for that matter. I'm glad Gracie survived, and more power to Dan and Mark for their incredible business success, and Dan's dedication to keep Gracie going one pan of cookies at a time. But after reading this account of feverish and desperate mixing and baking and substituting ingredients (long before they even had the idea for a business), to keep Gracie fed, I kept thinking how misguided the effort, how much easier and more natural it is just to raw feed and why Dan didn't consider giving her a nice raw meaty bone instead of searching for the perfect "nonmeat" ingredients. I still don't understand that. Later he does talk about baking vegetable beef biscuits, but it still seems to me if I had a starving dog I'd cut a chicken in half -- or for a dog that big, perhaps a whole chicken, and just feed her naturally. Better for her, and so much easier. But apart from that, it's a great tail. I mean tale :)
Humorous Dog Story.......2007-08-16
This book is hilarious and very well written. Dan Dye describes the scenarios with such perfect pitch that I found myself laughing out loud throughout the book. He artfully describes his mis-adventures while raising an almost blind and deaf Great Dane puppy and the people that he comes to know and understand while doing so.
Gracie........2007-06-12
One of the most heartwarming dog stories ever written!
Everybody should read this book, dog lover or not, to experience all the different emotions that express love.
Amazing Dan Dye & Mark Beckloff.......2007-03-24
I have given as presents at least ten copies of "Amazing Gracie: A Dog's Tale". It is such an inspirational and heartwarming story. I will forever be grateful to Dan Dye and Mark Beckloff for sharing the story of Gracie with us. Because of Gracie, they started the Three Dog Bakery, a gourmet food store for pets. Through Three Dog Bakery, Dan and Mark have helped raise money for many homeless dogs. In today's world, it is nice to know that there are people like Dan & Mark.
Sweet Story...........2007-03-06
A really Sweet book about the kind of dog we would all like to have, and the kind of story we all like to hear. A dog noone wanted turns out to be the best dog....smart, loving,protective....I read this in two days because I couldn't stop reading it....I loved the illustrations in the book, they are just as amusing as the story. You will probably shed a tear but it is more a happy story than sad. Like they say....the only thing wrong with our canine companions is they they don't live long enough. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

The Guide To Owning A Great Dane.......2006-02-04
The book had some really great glossy pictures. I did not think the book was very informative it sort of touched on different subjects but nothing in depth it was VERY basic. It did not help me on my decision on whether or not to add a Great Dane to my family. I am considering getting a Great Dane and this book was not helpful at all except to show me some very nice pictures of some gorgeous dogs and puppies. It was a nice read but not very helpful or informative.
Guide to owning a Great Dane.......2003-08-21
Great! An informative and interesting read for the average prerson who is looking into the breed. The high gloss pages and many photos in the book were beautiful. It is a high quality book for the price. I would recomend this book to anyone interested in the great dane.
This is a very good book for someone thinking about buying a Dane or for the first time Dane owner........1998-07-18
This book was quite informative and easy to read. It would be particularly beneficial to someone thinking about purchasing a Dane. It gives a lot of information without being difficult to read or going into more detail than is necessary for a novice Dane owner.

Customer Reviews:
A Little Girl's Invisible Best Friend.......2007-04-05
The author of the junior novel which the film Babe was based on has written a great tale about a dog named Henry. The Invisible Dog is a quick and simple read that both children and adults will enjoy. There are also a few illustrations inside as well.
Henry is a Great Dane and only a little girl named Janie and an old lady at the end of the street can see him. To everyone else Henry is invisible at a disturbing at times imagination of Janie who just seems to be carrying the family's dead dog's collar around the place. Janie knows Henry is real, she feeds it invisible food and cleans up its invisible waste and her father has told if she can raise $500 they'll get a dog everyone can see. Janie is very specific though, she knows the colour and everything that the dog they will get will be, because she's been walking it everyday for a long time now.
Funny storyline.......2006-08-27
I am always looking for "animal" stories to interest my daughter. This author has written many stories that keep her interest and The Invisible Dog is no exception. The story is simple, a girl wants a dog, her parents are reluctant. The girl finds an old collar and leash and imagines her pet. Through a series of remarkable coincidences, her dream comes true at the end of the story.
A Great Dog.......2001-11-16
This book is about a girl named Janie who finds a collar that belonged to her Great Dane, Rupert, who died when she was younger.
She carries it with her down the street. Mrs. Garrow, one of her neighbors, sees her and makes believe that she is petting a dog and gives Janie compliments on it. So Janie names her invisible harlequin Great Dane, Henry. She takes him everywhere she goes except school.
When her birthday comes her parents surprise her and take her to a dog show. She hopes the Harlequin Great Dane will win.
Read the book to find out who wins the show, what Mrs. Garrow finds in the teacup and how Janie's dream of owning a Great Dane comes true.
If you enjoy books that you can't put down, you'll love this one. I really love books about dogs so that is why I would recommend it to others who love dog stories.

Another Solid Entry.......2006-08-30
Cadfael is out and about again, this time in the company of his favorite Brother, Mark, and the story is free, except incidentally, of the Maud/Stephen eternal wrangle for the crown. Summer of the Danes brings the oft mentioned Owain Gwynedd to the fore along with his ambitious, untrustworthy and terribly flawed younger brother Cadwaladr in an intricate tale involving the Danes, who seem to comport themselves rather well given all bad press they usually come in for. The mystery is minor, romance flourishes and, while Cadfael plays his part, he's not the story, alas. Neither is Mark who seems a bit odd in this one. On his way to a sainted greatness no doubt. While you may wonder, as I oft have done, why books of this series are called medieval novels of suspense, rest assured that Peter's ability to limn a character, evoke a time, and place you in the scene are rarely equaled. We must, therefore, with good grace, allow Cadfael to play second fiddle from time to time and tolerate her unrelenting devotion to romance. Small price to pay for a satisfying series.
Strained relations.......2006-05-16
This 18th chronicle of Brother Cadfael has less about him and more about history. In fact, he really only appears at the beginning and at the ending and doesn't have any hand at all in the solving of crimes. The story springs from the tempestuous relationship between Owain Gwynedd, Prince of Wales and Cadwaladr, his treacherous and headstrong younger brother. The brothers have had no peace between them for years as Cadwaladr is forever plotting to seize power for himself, being beaten at this game by his brother and then counting on the strong family ties that exist in all Welshmen, to be forgiven and taken back into the fold. This time, he has gone too far however, and has hired Danish mercenaries to attack Owain's troops. These Danes have been settled in Ireland for generations (a fact I did not know) and were just as much Irish as Danish and were Christian to boot! It was an interesting read for the historical contents alone, even if Cadfael scarcely appeared.
not quite as good as the rest of the series.......2006-03-15
The first 50 pages are mostly travelogue, and the next 50 pages are mostly set-up. The story doesn't really take off until around page 115. Once it gets going, it's good, but I found myself skimming huge paragraphs of bucolic description in the beginning. It's worth reading if you're working your way through the series, but if you're looking for an introduction to the Cadfael series, don't start with this book.
The Summer of the Danes.......2004-04-15
I found this a marvelous mystery, though, as in most of this author's mysteries, the mystery is not important. The important thing is the words, the well-developed characters, and the lack of stereotypical characters.
I have a question for the person who said that all Peter's heroes were tall, blond, and muscular. I would like to ask how many he has read, as it is actually rare that the heroes are blond. Take a look at Hugh Beringar, Torold Blund and Brother Cadfael himself for some examples! And in the Hermit of Eyton Forest, the protagonist is a child with many childish characteristics.
The books are very good in general, though there are one or two that are not up to par. This is not one of her best, however, so you might try A Morbid Taste for Bones or One Corpse Too Many, which are both very good. I recommend this series to anyone who likes medieval mysteries!
Peters' Cadfael takes on a Danish role!.......2000-05-05
It is not the summer of his discontent, washed by the sun of Yorke; however, it is the season for another Cadfael adventure and mystery! And Ellis Peters, in her usual intriguing way, presents us with her 18th Brother Cadfael episode in "The Summer of the Danes."
The year is 1144--the civil war between King Stephen and Empress Maud still rages on--and Brother Cadfael is called upon to be an interpreter to the Welsh village of Saint Asaph. Cadfael is Welsh born and he welcomes the journey to his homeland as a pleasant break from his duties as a brother at the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Shrewsbury.
As it turns out--and naturally, as this is an Ellis Peters mystery!--a Danish fleet is sighted along the coast of Wales, a real menace, indeed. Then a young girl goes missing. Then a body is found. And Cadfael is off and running.
So is the reader! Having read all the Brother Cadfael series, I found this to be one of my favorites. Peters wastes no time in developing her story and does not hesitate to flavor her plot with plenty of Welsh history and lore. Will the Danes invade? Will the murderer be brought to justice? Cadfael's expertise, once again, proves to be essential in the resolution of the crimes.
Cadfael is the former crusader now turned monk who, while not solving murder cases, works as the Abbey's herbalist and is known throughout the area for his skills in medicine. The "Sunday Express" writes: "Cadfael...springs to life in her books, which are novels with depth. He is a man of warmth, humanity and engaging nosiness."
Do not be misled by the British TV series of the Cadfael stories. While on the surface they are quite adequate (Derek Jacobi is an ideal Cadfael), the 50-minute recounting of any of Peters' books does not do justice to the novel, which is a pity, for there are great gaps of (mis)understanding that simply cannot be supplied in such short time. Stay with the books! They are well-worth the read. Cadfael is a character worth knowing!

Pretty basic overview.......2006-11-05
This was an ok Dane book. I bought Great Dane: Model of Nobility and that is the best book for anyone wanting to know about Great Danes. It gives all the info you could ever want. It is out of print, but you can get it from a marketplace vendor or you can go to the author's dane website. Just google Jill Swedlow and you will find it. She has where you can print it out for free off of her site.
Biased AGainst New Owners.......2005-04-01
From the first sentence of the boook, there is a recurring theme that "Giant Dogs bring Giant Responsibilities." While this is certainly good advice, it was repeated so often throughout the book that I got the impression that the author was trying to discourage readers from getting a Great Dane. He spent a lot of time discussing health issues (always the problems the dog can get)but little time discussing what to do about them. AFter reading the book, it is enough to make a prospective owner consider opting for another breed. If you read the book, balance it with information from another Great Dane book, as this one is biased against new owners.
Great service and new book in good condition.......2003-07-18
Service is great and the book arrived in new condition. Its a great resource for people willing to have a great dane puppy.
good breed specific.......2003-06-09
I purchased a great dane and really was looking for something breed specific to find information to help me to care for my dane correctly. It answered my questions very well and in easy to read and understand language. A must for any first-time dane owner. Many beautiful Dane pictures. And very economically priced.
Good Job.......2003-03-23
I like this book to loan people who are considering getting a dane, as well as keeping a copy for myself. I think it explains how wonderful they truly are, but also explains the responsibilities of owning this breed. In many ways, they're more like an exotic pet and do have special care requirements, which he explains. He tells of the ups and the downs and makes you realize that your life won't be the same and you must be sure that this is what you want. Of the two people I've loaned my spare copy to, one got a dane and adored it & another decided against it. And I have another person who wants to borrow it, as they're considering a dane. Very helpful to a new or prospective dane owner. Also has many beautiful, naturally-taken dane pictures throughout.

GOOD BOOK--AND IT EVEN HAD A PICTURE OF A FRIEND OF MINE IN IT, WHICH WAS SURPRISING.
LOOKS GOOD ON THE TOILET TOP, ALSO.
A lot of Nothing.......2002-10-04
As I read through Dr. Ackerman's Book if the Great Dane, I found myself wanting more information than what was given. It was almost as if the author was trying to beat a deadline; so minimal information was given on a vast number of subjects. If you are getting a Dane or have a Dane and wanting a book to help you get a better understanding of the breed, look elsewhere. This book only left me asking more questions.
The stars given are for the illustrations. It's completely illustrated in color.
It is a very basic book.......2001-07-12
Beautiful color photos; great dust cover! Primarily, a basic level book. Good for the price. 95 pages total, so it's a small book. Pages 6-13 Breed History; pages 14-25 Mind and Body; pages 26-33 Selection of the Great Dane; pages 32-41 Feeding and Nutrition; pages 42-95 Health related.
EXCELLENT!.......2000-06-22
Dr.Ackerman does a wonderful job of making sure the reader understands the Great Dane. He lets it be known that the Great Dane isn't for everyone because of it's incredible size. He talks about all the different diseases, temperament, breeding, showing, etc.I highly recommened this book to the Great Dane owner to-be.
Book Description
This all-new book about the popular canine giant is the first in-depth work on the breed for Howell Book House since 1981. It is intended as a complete reference on the breed for every Dane owner from the reader with a first puppy to the serious breeder with a kennel full of champions. Completely authoritative, it also sparkles with the author's good humor and her obvious love of the bree—a must for the Dane fancier's library.

Realistic.......2007-07-16
I bought this book because I was considering getting a Great Dane. I wanted to study up on the breed before committing to having one. It was good because it did bring up both good and bad things about the breed. Danes are not for everyone. However, I wish it would have had more info on everyday living with a Dane and not so much on breeding. And yes, I did get a Dane.
If your looking for a dane or own a dane...........2000-10-15
BUY THIS BOOK! I had purchased and read over a dozen books in preparation for bringing my puppy home, and this by far is the best.
The section on choosing a breeder is wonderful, and has some very important information you need to know before you buy a Dane from someone.
Bottom line, get it, read it, keep it for reference.
Great Starter Information and Fun to Read.......2000-02-17
I loved this book. I learned enough in the care section to save at least one trip to the vet (normal stuff that doesn't seem so - callouses for big dogs). This book was fun to read, in addition to being so informative. Great for better understanding my Great Dane.
Great Dane Help.......2000-02-05
This was a very informative and helpful book. The Author provides keen insight into the care, responsibilities and phsyche of the Apollo of dogs.
Perfect for the New Dane Owner.......1999-12-26
This book answered all my questions about temperment, exercise and medical issues. I also really appreciated the balanced view - all the up and down side of owning a Great Dane from puppy to old age and death. Thanks to Jill for providing excellant information - I'm sure our new Dane will apprecitate it when he/she arrives!
