How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend, an informal, friendly guide by The Monks of New Skete, is really two books in one: a step-by-step training manual and a philosophical discussion of the spiritual benefits of owning a dog. The Monks, who support their community in upstate New York by breeding and training German shepherds, reveal a profound devotion to all breeds in this detailed guide to every imaginable aspect of dog ownership. They cover it all: naming the puppy, training with eye contact and jingling keys, establishing the best sleeping arrangements, even dealing with pet loneliness. Owners are advised to think of themselves as the dog's alpha figure, to train with praise instead of punishment, and to beware of becoming the dog's maid or doorman. Throughout, the authors reflect on the deep spiritual connection possible between humans and dogs. Generations of dogs have been trained with the bestselling 1978 edition of this book. With this update, the Monks are bound to gain many new fans--happy humans and obedient canines alike. With modesty and generosity, the Monks offer an extensive list of other helpful books about dogs, as well as a useful appendix of American Kennel Club titles and terms. --Judy Fireman

When you've got enough time on your hand..........2007-09-04
Who better than a bunch of rural New England living monks to spend their days raising German Shepards and writing about it... Between living the monastic life (young pups tethered to their frocks), these monks raise, breed and train dogs... and have written a book (this) which is considered by many the definitive dog owners guide... and when it comes to straightforward, in-depth non-gimmicky practicality... this manual may very well live up to its reputation... and quite worldly and dog centered with the exception on their philosophy of discipline... and this is why I only give it four stars... not that I agree or disagree, but its important to realize that their method is neither RADICAL, nor exactly modern... Basically if you've been reading most of the newer books you're told "Never punish a puppy..." in contrast, the Monk's go into quite a bit of detail on how to get yours to yelp should he try to pull certain offenses... Included are maneuvers which the monks describe as more drama than violence, but definitely are corporal punishment... with those controversial ALPHA ROLLS for toppers... and this is where I have a problem: I would really like to see the average non-professional dog trainer little old lady try to slap then alpha roll a large breed dog with an aggression problem and see what happens (a face full of stitches perhaps?) If such maneuvers are meant as a LAST RESORT, wouldn't that mean that the dog may very well need to be handled by a professional with a bit more experience... Trust me... I can't even play with my toy poodle without now and then having my nose chewed on... wrestling Rottweilers... forget it. - - I hope atleast one person agrees with me that even if this type of discipline is appropriate to get the dog to submit, it should not be done by someone unless they really know what they're doing... and even if not abusive when PROPERLY ADMINISTERED can be traumatic if not dangerous to the handler and dog if IMPROPERLY done. (I will admit though, the setting the dog up not to chase cars trick does sound rather fun!)
That said, this book is chock full of advice... not mere obedience but everything including very sensible advice many books miss out on... For example, the Monk's plead for a lifestyle that keeps the dog active, occupied and socialized, not merely disciplined and tied up in a yard...
and they go into the specifics how, even offering advice on how to make toys and sports good for both city and country. - - They also have a rather interesting trick they use with keys (similar to clicker training.)
My end advice... get it, but also read other books for balance... nonetheless, get it before you get your pup...
Absolutely Essential!.......2007-08-31
My own dog's trainer does not approve of the Monks, but in my world there is plenty of room for difference of opinion!
The Monks' book is valuable no matter what method you eventually settle on as a good fit for your temperament and your dog's needs, because the Monks' advice is about so much more than training methods: it is about a lifestyle and outlook, and dedication to your dog as a member of the family, with needs very different from those of the human members. It is that sense of confidence and kind authority, without being stern or strict, that makes training work- not the style of training itself. This book helps you achieve that state, which gives your dog the restful assurance that Master or Mistress is in charge, so he can relax and do his best at being your dog.
Great Training Manual.......2007-08-28
I got this because of my border collie. I am very glad I got this book. It was hard to choose which book to get since there are so many out there. I researched many books before deciding on this one. If you want to train your dog, buy this book!
How to be your Dog's Best Friend.......2007-08-28
When we adopted our black lab/shepard mix we sent for a copy of this book and felt that we successfully trained our dog using the monks' methods. Then our daughter (a school teacher) just got a purebred yellow lab so we obtained this particular copy of the book for her to use. She and her husband have read the book and using their methods of training. We and they are very happy with the results of the training of our dogs.
Your dog is a dog and not a human.......2007-08-14
Most other books about dogtraining have prettier pictures, and simpler advice. However, this book gives really exhaustive advice on how to train your dog in a way the dog understands and accepts. I also think that many other books about dogs anthropomizes the dogs. This one doesn't, it all the times reminds the reader that a dog is a dog (and 100% genetically wolf), and all the training is based on that fact. It is not denigrating to the dogs, rather it focuses on the dogs feelings and point of view, so, rather, it is more respectful of the dog.
There are some caveats with this book though: these guys raise big dogs, so, naturally, their advice works best with big, and more powerful dogs - like labradors. Secondly, this book does not really focus on puppies, so you might want a comeplementary book which deals with the art of raising puppies.

All-inclusive working dog reveiw.......2006-08-18
This book covers many different possible 'occupations' of a working dog, and is written clearly. Not many pictures, it is full of information. If you are considering raising a working dog, this book outlines the various levels and certifications you (the handler) and the dog will need to complete. If you are interested in learning about a particular aspect more, this book will provide a description of that occupation and what that occupation entails.
Top Working Dogs.......2006-03-09
Found the font size small, not that easy to read. However, the content is superb, if there is an updated version (training methods etc. change)I would be first in line.
It is so good to get a book from a pro, someone who's been there, done that, got the T shirt at the very highest level.
For Serious Schutzhund Enthusiasts.......2005-07-27
After purchasing many dog training manuals and finding them not quite up to snuff, I was very pleased to finally find a book which was comprehensive and authoritative. It breaks each area of the sport down and is easy to follow. The book is intelligently written.
Great information IF you can read it!.......2004-06-24
The 3rd edition (1994) of this book is VERY HARD TO READ. The font set is about 5 or 6 points, single spaced, very tightly packed. You need great eyesight and still must be ready for eyestrain. I can read anything up close, but this is the worst book, PHYSICALLY, I've ever had to read. Still, you can't fault the quantity of information and the first (brief) perusal makes me want to read more. I was dismayed when I opened the book so I'm giving you a heads up. I'm going to buy a magnifying glass.
A great all-rounder.......2000-06-24
I have owned this book since shortly after it was published, except for the short period of time when a local police dog-man "borrowed" it. I ended up repurchasing it! This book is solid and sound in content, and has information that will appeal to beginners and experts alike in the fields of tracking, obedience and man-work. I review it as a resource book whenever I need a fresh training idea for a dog or a group of trainers. I no longer loan it - I recommend you buy your own.

An obedience instructor's bible!.......2000-07-16
I have been teaching obedience for many years. This book really opens up a whole new world for you. The book is very detailed, descriptive, and written for everyone. A real must have in every dog owners home!
The best handbook ever for trainers!.......1998-03-19
Dr. Volhard & Ms. Fisher have once again collaborated on a useful, motivational, and entertaining handbook for dog obedience. This time they focus on the instructor. They give detailed advise on the hows and whys of taking a group of handlers through a successful session. The fundamental point of the handbook is that training a dog is one thing - but, teaching a class how to train their dogs is quite different. Remarkably well written and entertaining: a MUST for all training directors and should be in all dog club and dog school libraries.
Book Description
In tracking, a dog follows the scent left by a person walking through a field and finds one or more articles left along the way. Dogs have amazing scenting ability and love using their nose. As dogs develop their scenting ability and as handlers become adept at following their dog along a track, they join that special fraternity of tracking enthusiasts who experience the joy of completing an unknown track. The training method described here is a systematic technique that works for almost all dogs. It is a structured and careful method, leaving very little learning to chance. Because the dog must lead the handler down the track, motivational techniques are emphasized throughout the training process. The method prepares a dog and handler both for their first tracking test and the advanced TDX test. This training method is ideal for trainers who want a well laid-out plan that has a long history of success in training dogs to track. Throughout the book, you will find detailed descriptions of tracklayer and handler procedures as well as problem avoidance and problem solving techniques. A field ready map is included for each session to help the tracklayer lay the correct track for the dog.

A GREAT book for the layman or the experianced!.......2006-09-30
No fanfare or complications. Just a simple book with simple terms and diagrams that anyone can understand. I have met Sil a few times at Earth Dog trials. VERY good dog trainer.
Wonderful from start to finish.......2006-08-26
I bought this book hoping for starter help with my first tracking dog. This has been a great asset to me and my friends. It was not written at a time when there was a VST title but if you can get to the TDX level then I think that is a great start.
for beginner.......2006-07-05
This is quite nice starting points, for more experienced there is some thoughts. But this is in general for people who hasn't tracked before.
Enthusiastic Tracking, The Step-by-Step Training Manual.......2004-07-30
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to track with any kind of dog. The method is designed for the dog to always have success, and it's fun for both owner & dog. I am fortunate to have this book in my library & also to have attended a seminar by the author & to have been given tracklaying pointers by him the first time I laid a track for a tracking test. I can attest that he is an excellent teacher!

very easy to follow.......2007-04-26
nice great book, een if youve already started training your dog. i noticed a difference the first day!
AWESOME and EFFECTIVE.......2007-01-10
I've been trying to train my bitch Spaniel (CoCo) for a long time but she is so high-strung and independent that I've had terrible problems....until I found THIS book.
I cannot stress enough how helpful, clearly written, and effective this book is for dog owners of all ages.
The cognitive behavioral aspects delving into the intricacies of canine development ensure that owners truly understand what to expect from their dogs at each developmental stage as well as the reasons behind canine behavior - all immeasurably important issues.
This book is awesome and is THE BIBLE of how to train your dog.
It really works!!!.......2004-06-09
Hello! I'm training my Golden Retriever puppy with this book, and Volhard & Fisher's training methods have worked wonders!!! My puppy, at four months of age, has been taught to sit on command, heel on command, and down on command. You can also teach your dog signals for the commands you want them to do, which can come in handy if you're talking on the telephone or chatting with a friend while walking your puppy. The main idea Volhar and Fisher teach you during this book is "positive reinforcement", which is a really handy training method to use. If their methods can work on my stubborn, rambunctious, sly Golden Retriever puppy, this book can definetly perform miracles with YOUR dogs!!!
Also helpful to kids training their puppies, too!.......2004-06-07
Hello! I am a twelve-year old that recently found this book in my public library. I don't have a puppy, yet, but reading this book helped me to understand the mind of the dog. I think it's so cool you can start training your puppy as soon as you bring him home!
Several times I have considered switching my training books to more faster methods, but in the end, many people find out that the "fast" methods don't work. It's better to take your puppy's training slow, I mean, if you're lazy and can't take fifteen minutes of your time every day for eight weeks to train your dog, then you shoudn't own a puppy at all.
The book itself, considered by many people "boring", is actually very awesome! The little cartoons and comic strips found inside made me laugh my head off. The whole book has a light, humorous plot to it, which made the book appeal to me in the first place.
So, trash your other training books and the little electric collars and the rolled up newspapers and start reading "Training your Dog". I am so excited to start training MY puppy with this book!
Oldie and Goodie.......2002-05-24
I have trained dogs for many years (service dogs, obedience dogs, hunting dogs, people's pets) and this is always the first book I recommend. It is clear straight forward and effective. A great book for students to take home and practice with or for a new dog owner.
That is not to say there are not other ways to train, but this works. My own personal style includes food motivation especially with puppies and play training with older pups and dogs. Other favorites to read with this are Mother Knows Best and Play Training Your Dog.
Book Description
Although this aristocratic animal is an all-purpose field dog, its high intelligence makes it ideal as a watchdog, and its good nature makes it a companionable family pet. Like all dogs bred for the hunt, this animal should have plenty of exercise. This manual offers sound advice on all aspects of care for German Shorthaired Pointers, and is handsomely illustrated with color photos.

Complete and Accurate.......2007-01-09
As a breeder of German Shorthaired Pointers at [....], I give this book with each puppy sold. Allot of other books, even some with GSP in their title are warmed over generic puppy books. This book is specific to my breed and full of valuable information for the beginner and the experienced GSP owner.
a must have for a anyone considering a German Shorthair.......2003-06-11
This book is an excellent, concise introduction to anyone even remotely considering getting one of these dogs. It covers everything from how to pick a puppy, deciding if these are the right type of dog for you and how to find this out, diseases and ailments that these dogs are prone to, basic puppy and dog training methods, housetraining, and basic hunting methods. Along with a complete description of the accepted breed standard and competitions available for your dog. Though this should not be the only book a new GSP owner should get, it is recommended as the first one to get when deciding.
Good Jumping off Point.......2001-12-22
This book touches all the bases. Excellent for the new dog owner. Make no mistake, it is NOT the end of ones personal gsp library, unless using the dog as "just" a pet. I would recommend others as well. This book does just what it is intended to, introduce the GSP owner with brief history and insight into his/her new K9 friend. For the price you can't beat it.
Not worth the box it is shipped in........2001-01-08
This is a generic "how to feed your puppy" book with a couple of pictures of GSP's and one extra chapter devoted to the breed. If you don't already know the information contained in the book, you have never owned a dog in your life. Spend the extra cash on "New Complete GSP's" or "GSP's Today"
Great to teach your German short haired pointer to hunt!.......1999-01-30
I bought this book a few weeks ago and ever since I started reading it my pointer has made extreme progress I would recomend this book to any one looking to train there pointer.

Tells it like it is.......2006-01-26
Briefly..
We read this book, and others before adopting our Malamute. We found it to be right on the money. Especially important are the parts of the book that discuss on whether you personally are up to adopting a Malamute.
Personally, I wouldn't have another Dog, period. But they are absolutely not for everybody. Better read this book and some others before getting one of these precious and gorgeous animals. If you decide not to, it makes a beautiful addition to any library.
A Prospective Mal Owner.......2002-03-17
As a prospective Mal owner I found this book very imformative, more so than some of the larger and more expensive books which I have in my collection. Especially the section ARE YOU THE RIGHT PERSON FOR A MAL. I found this especially interesting as a Mal is not suitable for just anyone. A well written book with plenty of good information which some other books don't cover enough. I recommend this book to anyone, new and old Mal owners alike.
Wonderful Book!.......2000-11-14
I am owned by a Malamute - only mine is the giant breed and I have to say that this book is EXCELLENT and right on the mark. I loved the history of the breed as well as what I can expect. Yes, they are stubborn. Yes, they are pack animals, with the family as their pack and yes they do howl! The section on whether or not this dog is right for you was great! Not everyone can be owned by a Mal - and I thank the author for that!!
The information is precise and well researched and the pictures are absolutely beautiful. After being owned one of these gorgeous creatures, you won't want any other kind of dog!
I have the book lying out on my table and everyone always wants to look through it.
If you are a Mal owner - this is one great book to have!
Excellent resource.......2000-04-13
I purchased this book because I was considering a Malamute for a pet. After reading it, I decided that I didn't have the right environment for a Malamute. I still think they are beautiful dogs, but I'm not the right owner for one. It's very informative and easy to understand.
The book every malamute owner or potential owner should have.......1999-02-14
A fantastic book filled with such good, sound information the reader wonders how they got it all into so few pages. The book tells all about the normal things like grooming, feeding, and health, but it tells you so much about the history, how to train or find the right trainer, activity needs, and breeding issues. The book also has a wonderful section on "Do you know what you're getting into?". The excellent pictures in this book alone are worth the price.

Generic Information - A bit of a Letdown.......2003-07-10
If you are looking for generic information that would pertain to any breed, this book serves the purpose. There is basic information presented pertaining to the Brittany but I found little substance. If you are familiar with breed books from Barrons you understand what I mean. The Brittany is a unique, fiesty little dog and I was looking for a book that would delve into the temperment, development and point me in the right direction as far as training needs for my special companion. The information provided in this book does not concentrate on the Brittany and except for the pictures and brief chapters touching on the breed as a dual purpose companion/upland game hunter you can basically find the exact information on any breed in a Barrons book. I have trained Collies and Golden Retrievers and being a first time Brittany owner was hoping for a lot more information. You can go to the akc.org page and get the breed standard information for free. The book touches on hunting and retrieving but again, more in depth information can be found on most of the reputable breeder sites online. If you are looking to really get inside the breed, save your money, this book is nothing more than basic health care information that would pertain to any dog. A "complete owner's manual" it is not. I don't need to buy a book to tell me that my dog needs fresh water every day. The brief section on training says nothing about the "soft" temperment of this dog and the need for gentle positive reward methods and the risk of raising a timid fearful dog with problems that may be hard for the inexperienced owner to correct. If you are looking for a book with basic care instructions such as nail clipping, grooming, basic daily care and information on various potential health problems such as parasitic infection, explanations of the common diseases that we vaccinate our pups to be protected from, you will find the information in this book.
Bottom line- if you are new to dog ownership you may find the information useful and valuable. If you are an experienced dog owner, pass on this one.
Cute Pictures, Informative.......2003-03-17
When I put a down payment on a Brittany pup, I purchased this book in order to gain knowledge about the breed. My Brittany is now 3 years old and I continue to look at this book as a reference.
OK, with some errors.......2002-01-11
This book is OK, but contains a few errors. The first review is also wrong, tri-color is not common or acceptable in American Brittanys. That is a feature of a French Brittany, and the bloodlines are distinct. One thing the book fails to underscore sufficiently is how "hyper" a brittany is: if you have never been around a pointing dog, please take some time to do so before getting a brittany so it doesn't wind up being orphaned. They are sweet, biddable dogs, but need to run alot every day. This is particularly true of a well-bred britt, since it will come from lines that maintain field traits. Good luck.
New Brittany Owner.......2001-07-30
Excellent book for the new Brittany owner. I've bought 4 other books since I got my pup, and this one is the best. Plenty of general purpose info for any dog owner, plus lots of specifics about Brittanys. Training information is also provided.
The book was well written, easy to read and in depth........1998-06-23
Any one planning on purchasing a well mannered, friendly, active, loving, inteligent family oriented dog, should investigate Dan Rice's book first. They may find through this in depth and easy to read book that the loveable Brittany is for them. Note: Since the publication of this book, the AKC has changed the Brittany Spaniel's name to just Brittany. You may also like to know that the Brittany comes in other colors than just orange and white. Liver and white, is also common and although considered a discualification from shows, black and white or tri-colored are also commonly seen.

Product Description
This relatively new breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1980, though its ancestors have been working on Australian ranches since early in this century. The sturdy, active Australian Cattle Dog was bred from Collies, Dalmatians, and the native Australian Dingo, and is noted for its loyalty and protective instincts. Here is advice on training, grooming, diet, health maintenance, and much more. Paperback / 96 Pages / 6 1/2 x 7 7/8 / 1997
Customer Reviews:
ACD.......2007-08-23
I enjoyed the book. I didn't know to much about Cattle Dogs. Its a good basis for first books. But I was hoping it would have gone into more information then it did.
Great Book.......2007-07-02
book is great .. everything is straight forward .. good ideas and reccomendations .. easy to read ..
useful.......2006-10-24
Unlike many low-cost "breed" books, this one actually does have breed specific information in it. Discusses typical Heeler temperament and behavior. Plus, lots of nice photos.
Not for deaf ACD owners.......2002-12-07
I do not recommend this book if you are a deaf ACD owner. The book states that deaf dogs do not make good companion dogs and does not give any facts for their statement. As the owner of two deaf ACD's , I am glad I didn't take the advise of the author. I would have to agree that this is a breeder book and is not for those who wish to aid the overpopulation instead of add to it.
Pretty good.......2001-08-01
I have an Australian Cattle Dog myself, and this is the book that I had from the very beginning. It was pretty good, though it didn't give much info on how to deal with the Cattle Dogs large amount of energy. If you want a book on the background of the Australian Cattle dog, this is a good book, but don't get it if you are looking to solve problems.
Book Description
One of the most photogenic, gentle, and lovable of all dogs, the basset can also be stubborn and independent, which means that it usually requires firm obedience training. This book describes the basset's origins and characteristics in detail, and offers expert advice on purchasing, training, feeding, grooming, and health maintenance.
Customer Reviews:
Ah, Bassets.......2005-10-10
The book is very helpful in telling you WHY Bassets behave (oxymoronic phrase) the way they do. Not even this wonderful book can make them less stubborn, alas.
Getting to know her.......2005-08-09
Lots of valuable information in the manual that has helped me understand my Basset Hound. Worth having.
Not What I Expected............2003-03-09
This book was not at all what I expected! I thought it was written by a lover and owner of basset hounds?? It seems as if this guy thinks basset hounds are pains!!! Not to mention the type of dog he describes is nothing like my dog! My dog is very playfull, not calm or sluggish at all! He talks about Basset Hounds like they are the most fragile dogs in the world! This book was not as good as I thought it would be.
brian.......2001-11-11
This book is excellent for the first time Bassett owner. I found it helpful in raising my own Bassett Hounds and giving advice to friends and family that had decided to get a Bassett of their own. The only drawback is it could offer a little more detail that is specific to Bassett Hounds and not just dogs in general. All in all, it was very helpful in understanding some of the unique traits of Bassett Hounds.
great book about bassets.......1997-12-04
This was a very good book for me as I am looking for a basset hound puppy. It is very informative and to the point.
