Book Description

The Conclave of Shadows has smashed the Nighthawks' dread plot to destroy the Empire of Great Kesh through civil war, putting an end to the murderous brotherhood's reign of terror. But there is no time for the victors to celebrate, for the mad sorcerer, Leso Varen, has taken refuge with the Magicians of the Assembly on the world of Kelewan, and is lost among the most powerful men and women of that empire. And a devastating new threat looms on the horizon: hordes of the Dasati—the most vicious warriors in the known universe—are massing to overrun both Kelewan and Midkemia.

The great sorcerer Pug knows of no power that will vanquish the invaders. And he realizes he must now enter another realm of reality if his world is to survive—and make his way to the poisonous heart of the Dasati Empire to find the answers he needs to defeat the fearsome enemy. Joining him on his quest into the dark unknown will be the brave Magnus and Nakor . . . and a disturbing young stranger named Bek, whose terrifying bloodlust and uncanny strength attest to a host of sinister secrets waiting to be revealed. But the champions of Midkemia will need every ally they can muster if their mission is to succeed in the most terrible place they have ever ventured—as they and all Midkemians prepare for battle against the encroaching doom that would swallow their world.

2 out of 5 stars Most Original Feist Novel in Years . . . But Horribly Written.......2007-10-11

I feel a little bit like Jake Gyllenhal's character in 'Brokeback Mountain.' I've been reading novels of Midkemia for so long (my first grown-up chapter books in elementary school)that I just can't quit you, Raymond Feist, no matter how bad a writer you have become!

I went back to Feist's original Riftwar books to see if he was always such a bad writer. Nope. I re-read a few chapters of 'Magician,' and that book has tolerable prose, and the dialogue doesn't make me wince. Could it be that Feist didn't write the more recent novels of Midkemia? Could it be that he just jots down story ideas and hands them over to a high school Sophomore for fleshing out? The cheap, easy sentiment (Pug's son marrying an admirable young widow and adopting her impoverished-yet-cheerful sons into a life of privilege and opportunity) and teen-movie cliches (said sons going to boarding school, beating up the school bully, then becoming friends with the bully and the hero-worshipping nerd who ends up being the King's son) just ruin what could have been the best Feist book in years.

About a third of the novel is from the Dasati point of view.
When Feist first introduced the Dasati, it seemed a lame attempt to create new villains worse than the last villains the Midkemians overcame. But in this story, Feist takes us into the lives of the Dasati, and it is more engaging and unique than anything Feist has ever written. The author has really put some thought into what a culture of Evil would be and how such a culture in fact cannot really exist.

I was very happily surprised at the complexity of Feist's Dasati narrative, but it is not enough to save the book from the awful prose and paper-thin characters.

4 out of 5 stars Into a Dark Realm.......2007-08-23

This is a good Feist piece of work. It does not live up the Riftwar Saga, but the Magician series was by far his finest works. However, Feist is beginning to introduce and utilize many new characters. For many this will be a welcome change. I enjoyed Feist's other series that leveraged new characters. The Tsurani series was great.

The Conclave is still at the heart of the book so those with attachment to Pug and Nakor will find them plenty to keep you interested.

All in all, I recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Into a Dark Realm (The Darkwar Saga, Book 2).......2007-07-12

Feist did a wonderful job bringing his past and present works together in this book. I love the direction that the story line is progressing towards. He leaves you waiting with anticipation for the next book (as usual).

5 out of 5 stars The Story Continues.......2007-06-26

The Magician Pug, his family and friends continue in their fight to allow both worlds to survie free and not part of the dark realm. The story is well written and continues the saga of Pug over a very long life time and his war with the dark power which is trying to subvert both worlds in which Pug has a stake. Some friends and people, of course, will no longer been seen. At least it seems so, as they are eliminated by the dark power. Its tough fighting a god like force when you are mearly mortal, or near mortal. Pug also must face the time when all his family will pass on to the wheel and leave him behind and alone. But in order to stop this force he must face that reality and move forward in his fight.

5 out of 5 stars more midkemia goodness.......2007-10-11

Feist does it again with this one. if you liked the rest of his works then definitely get this one. otherwise, this is about 20th in the series and not much would make sence. start with Magician: Apprentice first.

3 out of 5 stars More formula.......2007-08-08

Mr. Feist is a very good writer. I started out with his
modern day "Faerie Tale", then "Shadow of a Dark Queen" and the
rest of the Serpentwar books, the went back and read the
rest of the Midkemia books in order. Mr Feist seems to follow
a typical 'Fantasy formula', but has an excellent talent for
making us care about the characters, much better than most
authors. I was glad to see a bit more about Kesh, too, though
it seemed to follow what one would expect from an 'Arabian Nights'
Aladdin saga. I get attached to characters, and with Mr. Feist's
talent for developing a rapport between reader and character, I
don't want too see people die....but in reality they do, and maybe Mr. Feist
gets a bit too attached to his own creations.
Nakor is great, obviously one thinks of veteran actor Mako in the role.
The Talnoys make me think of the Storm troopers from "Star Wars", though
that's just a vague visual connection in my own mind :p

5 out of 5 stars Hurray Pug's back!.......2007-07-13

Finally, Fiest brings back Pug, one of my favorite fantasy characters, into an interesting new series that I'm looking forward to finishing. While the plot was interesting, it was a little confusing at first, but that is only a minor setback. This book also does a lot to set up for the rest, so it reveals only a little and keeps much shrouded in mystery.
Still, Fiest is a great writer, and this book, while not perfect and not nearly as good as Magician, is no exception.

4 out of 5 stars The Saga Continues.......2007-05-31

I am a Feist fan, and as such this book is an automatic choice. It is not Feist's best work, but it is a worthwhile addition, and it does present some changes in that the conclave is the center of this book (and probably the series) and the magicians play a major role.

The book is set mostly in Kesh, which is a pleasing surprise. The creation of Midkemia is by now so well developed I was so far a little disapointed at not having all major nations covered by the plot. The previous series covered the region of Roldem and this one takes us further away, with possible extensions to Kelewan in the next installment.

It's certainly not a book I would recommend for new readers of Feist, but if you reached this far in the Midkemia series, it's a must.

4 out of 5 stars continuing story .......2007-05-29

Holds up to the rest of the body of work for Feist. I am a bit tired of the same old thing though... still a good read, there seems to be nothing even this good from todays' writers of the genre.

5 out of 5 stars Everything Pug Book.......2007-02-07

Great book! Very practical information about what pugs need as far as bathing, skin fold wiping (beware of swamp face), and other general pug hygiene. Very practical training tips, such as belly rubbing to assure your pug that you are dominant (as well as providing a delightful belly rub) and choosing useful words for training, such as "off" instead of "no jumping," so that that your pug can be praised with the same word, for example, "Good Off," which then serves as a built-in reward (and doesn't exhaust the word "No"). Interesting and funny information on pug personalities. What's not to love about a pug?

Having met Alison a number of times both on this side of the Atlantic at the Pug Dog Club of America National Specialties as well as at seeral Crufts shows I was curious to know what her book was like so I quickly ordered it. It arrived the day my litter of one was born. Since I was up for the night anyways I settled next to the new mom and her pugette and began to read the 128 page hardcover book. Each of the ten chapters provided interesting and very valuable information for any one who is considering getting a Pug. The first chapter introduces the breed and gives a bit of history covering their Imperial heritage, their European introduction and British royalty connections. It then crosses the Atlantic to the American Pug and brings you current with names of some rich and famous people who have been Pug fanciers. All this information is pretty much the standard fare for a book on Pugs. But the second chapter is the one that really captured my attention: Choosing a Pug. this chapter is the one that will get me to recommend this book to those who are beginning their search and are wanting, or in my estimation needing, more information on the breed. Each Chapter there after: Ariving Home, Early Lessons, Caring For Your Pug and even Problem Behavior all help someone who is soon to select their future companion to learn more about what they may expect as an owner of a Pug, puppy or adult. The next three chapters address activities owners of Pugs can do with their dog including information on Canine Good Citizen, Obedience, Agility, Freestyle, Carting, Showing, Therapy dogs, and breeding. Sprinkled throughout the book are highlights focusing on some special Pugs and their owners detailing their accomplishments. The last chapter, Health Care, is written by a Veterinarian. Thre is special attention to breed-prone problems. Although Ms Moun is from England she addressed the USA Pug Fanciers interest and concerns thourghly.

I bought this book because I take one of my pugs, a Certified Therapy Dog, to a local library program where kids ages 7-9 read to her (and other dogs). I've built up a library of various books I bring with me, but I'm trying to add quality books that feature pugs. This book has not only a fawn pug (mine is black--we need more picture books with black pugs!), but is also a cute story. Illustrations are appealing as well. As an extra bonus, you learn about trucks...so (even tho' I run the risk of being branded sexist)this book may appeal to boys as well as girls.

    Book Description

Marie Antoinette was one of the most celebrated queens in history…but she was once a little girl, too. As told by her vain but devoted dog, Sebastian, here is the story of the young princess’s life—from her childhood in Austria, to the elaborate preparations leading to her marriage to Louis XVI; from her unhappy rise to power in turbulent times, to the birth of her own children. Lynn Cullen’s spirited text sheds light on a side of Marie Antoinette few have seen—that of a vulnerable young girl thrust into a role much bigger than she could have imagined. Stunning illustrations by Amy Young capture the grandeur of life in 18th century Versailles and the touching intimacy of a child’s lasting love for her pet.

I purchased this book for my 33 year-old daughter, who lives in another state with her little Pug, for several reasons. One; she has a Pug, two; she studied French when she was in High School, three; she's been to Paris and has a special thing for the Eiffel Tower, four; she collects special books regardless of age. She loved the book with it's beautiful colored illustrations and read it to her little Pug, Chloe who also loved it.

When Alfred, a supposedly unlovable pug (or so the cat tells him) meets a new neighbor dog through the solid fence, he can't help himself: "My name is Alfred," he says. "I'm a golden retriever." As long as he can keep the fence between himself and Rex, Alfred is relaxed enough to get to know his new buddy. They share many likes (sleeping in the sun, dog food, and scratching) and dislikes (baths and the vet), and spend hours chatting. But then one day Rex decides to dig a hole under the fence so he can come over to Alfred's side. It's the moment of truth--will Rex find Alfred unlovable when he sees him face to face?

Dan Yaccarino's story about real friendship (and the danger of shaky self esteem) will strike a chord with anyone who has ever told a teeny tiny white lie (or a whopper) on the playground just to boost his or her image a bit. Alfred suffers from a common malady: he believes anything others tell him. But on the final page, readers will rejoice to see Alfred and his pal Rex peeking mischievously over the windowsill at the naughty cat, who is obviously flustered to see that her victim isn't going to take it any more. Yaccarino (illustrator of Circle Dogs, by Kevin Henkes, I Love Going Through This Book, by Robert Burleigh, and many others), whose stylized gouache on watercolor paper illustrations are recognizable a mile away, manages to make this pug positively lovable despite what any feline might say. (Ages 4 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

    Book Description

Alfred the pug dog thinks hes unlovable. Other dogs make fun of his tiny legs and funny face. The cat and the parrot and even the goldfish tease him. Then a new dog, Rex, moves in next door. Because Alfred wants a friend so badly, he tells Rex a little fib about himself. But what will happen when Rex learns the truth? Will he find Alfred unlovable too? Dan Yaccarino has created a charming story about a little pug who learns the true meaning of friendship.

2 out of 5 stars You can only find acceptance among those who are like you?.......2007-09-26

As a strong supporter of anti-bias education, I really, really wanted to like this book. I now wish that I had read the two negative reviews because, unfortunately, I share their opinion. The message that I take from this book is that if you are different, you can only find acceptance among those who think and look just like you. So much for diversity! I'm reluctant to share this book with my kids but may give it a try anyway since it could provide them with an opportunity for critical thinking.

    5 out of 5 stars A Most Adorable Book.......2007-09-20

I have loved pugs since I was a child and now that I have children (and a pug) of my own, this book was simply perfect for my family. It teaches the beauty and value of diversity and of accepting yourself inspite of the way others may treate you (which is a plus since I have Asian children living in a predominately white region). Also, the puggies are just so cute!!! This book is a must for any parent or pug lover.

5 out of 5 stars Unloveable - is completely loveable!!.......2007-07-24

My daughter received this as a gift and it is such a wonderful book! We read it probably once a week and it does not get old. Perfect for anyone who has a pug, loves a pug or any other dog that many consider "so ugly they're cute".

5 out of 5 stars A sweet, good book for little ones and adults........2007-01-24

If you like pugs and know them, this book is especially sweet. All the things that a pug-lover finds (or learns to find) endearing are highlighted as "unlovable" characteristics in one lonely little pug, until he finds someone just like him. It's a sweet book that could be very helpful in teaching kids to appreciate what they've got, but to appreciate it in others, too.

    5 out of 5 stars LOVABLE.......2007-01-10

This is such a sweet book for all ages! Especially if you are a Pug lover!

      5 out of 5 stars Pug Breeder-Recommends!!!.......2002-03-07

I not only like this book, I send it home with all my pups. It has up to date info, great photos and necessary info for new pug owners. I think it is a great book for the basic pet pug owner & because it is reasonably priced I am able to offer it to my customers. Highly recommend!!!!!

Very generic book of dog care. Any general book as helpful.

1 out of 5 stars A little of this, a little of that........2000-04-06

If you want to learn about pugs, read this book, and then go out and buy another book about pugs.

"The Essential Pug" is a hodgepodge of little bits of information, most of it not specific to pugs.

The chapter "On Good Behavior" takes a lot of time to tell you basically nothing. But the author of the chapter seems to agree with me that you need to look to other sources: "Find out all you can about your chosen breed first [the book is supposed to be for pug owners], then master rudimentary training and handling skills."

      No kidding.

Only a few sections are really about pugs. Other places plugged the name "pug" into pre-existing material. But a lot of places they didn't even bother with that. "...your chosen breed."

4 out of 5 stars Good book, great pictures.......1999-08-18

This book, text-wise, is nearly identical to "The Pug:An owner's guide" by Patterson. It's decent, but nothing spectacular. About half the info is generic to any breed (training, illnesses, etc.) This book, though, has wonderful photos. So adorable! It's also several dollars cheaper. I'd recommend this book over "The Pug", but the book by Phil Magitti is better than both.
