Book Description
What you see is not always what you get - and this true story of a man and his dog is no exception. Woven just under the surface of this simple parable, Keller presents profound spiritual truth. It is the story of Lass, a worthless animal thought to be untrainable, who becomes a magnificent and valuable sheepdog - not terribly unlike how God's love can transform our worst characteristics into blessings that serve to further His Kingdom. Allow yourself to see Biblical truth in this classic tale of what can happen when you yield to the Master.

Excellent Books / Excellent Buy.......2007-09-28
Loved this book - a wonderful story of Love through the eyes of a shepherd. Lass is a sheepdog who is abused and unloved. Her transformation when she is loved by her master is a picture of our transformation when we receive God's (our master's) love.
Lessons from a Sheep Dog.......2007-04-28
The write ups were misleading. I bought this book for my grandson, only to find it contained Christian propaganda. "Obey the Master's voice" ??? please...
Engaging, light read - recommend for all.......2006-10-09
This book is warm story that shows the relationship of trust and loyalty built between an abused dog and his new owner. I highly recommend it to any and all.
Worthy of a re-read from time to time. Among other messages, a gentle reminder of the spirit of service we are all meant to demonstrate!
Great book for dog lovers.......2006-07-09
I gave this book to a friend for her birthday. She has a dog just like Lass and could relate very closely to the author's experiences. She loved the book. I am reading it now and agree completely. Great book for any dog lover.
Lessons from a Sheep Dog.......2006-03-20
Be sure to get this little book to go with "A shepherd looks at psalm 23". It will open you eyes to your relationship with our good shepherd and it may put you to shame as to how willing are you to follow His call.

Nop's Trials: One of The Most Excellent Books I Have Ever Read.......2006-03-05
Nop's Trials, by Donald McCaig, is a heart-warming story of Lewis Burkholder's prize border collie, who is stolen while wandering a bit to far with the puppy. He is then, of course abused by redneck Grady Gumm, who is later killed in the end of the story. Nop, the main character, is then transported all over the place by dog abusers, dog lovers, dog haters, and dog users. This is a story where you will be happy at some times, be sad, cry, and feel the pain of Lewis' determined journey to find his best friend, Nop. If you havn't read this story, I reccommend you read it now!!
AWESOME book.......2005-11-20
If you have or are thinking of getting a border collie this book will give you insight (good and bad) into their head. They aren't like other dogs...but I saw my border collies in "Nop". Excellent way of explaining and describing factual things that sprinkle through this book. If you liked the Lad books of old; Lassie Come Home and others you'll like this book. Highly recommended for dog lovers.
Horrified!.......2005-03-17
Being the dog lover I am, and living with two amazing border collies, I had high HOPES for this book. However, after getting only to page 44, I felt sick and horrified! I couldn't believe I was actually reading this. This is by far the worst book I can remember, and I will not spend anymore time discussing it. My only hope is that I can save someone else from wasting time and dealing with such agony.
Heartwarming but heartbreaking.......2003-04-25
This is a fantastic book for dog lovers, and Border Collie fans in particular. Written in a very readable style, with subtle humor and warmth, it is hard to put down. I especially liked the insights into the thoughts of the individual dogs, and their "conversations". It is very obvious that the author both loves and understands dogs. However, I did find some scenes concerning the abuse of dogs to be highly upsetting, even though the actual abuse was not generally graphic but the results were obvious. To be made aware that people treat animals so inhumanely left me feeling very distressed although the book, as a whole, was wonderful.
For Dog & Animal Lovers.......2003-02-21
I first read a condensed version of this story years ago, and it haunted me. I had to learn what I was missing and was highly pleased recently to attain a copy of this complete book for my very own. McCaig writes in a very simplistic, to the point style which flows smoothly and quickly, telling a story of how an honest, hardworking farm man loses his newest stockdog in an unfortunate series of events which only seem to bring the two even closer together at the end. Nop's trials describe not only Border Collie stockdog trials--herding sheep and such for prizes--but the trials he must endure just surviving, wondering if he will ever see his master again or work again on his farm. It is intriguing to note that while you may occasionally "hear" what the dog's point of view is, he is speaking in his own dog language which humans may interpret or misinterpret as they will. A great read for any age, there are a few disturbing scenes described which may upset very young or particularly zealous animal lovers of any kind. Overall, this book deserves its place with all the other great animal stories like Watership Down, Tailchaser's Song, Firebringer, White Fang, The Black Stallion, and The Plague Dogs.

Why should I buy this? .......2007-04-30
Like many breeds, the Border Collie deserves understanding by potential and current owners. I don't feel however this book was intended to do that. A basic dog care book would suffice for most of it and in spending too much time on this, diminishes the challenge and understanding this breed demands of its owners.
The contention of the author that the Border Collie is relatively a new breed is, in my mind patently dishonest. Border Collie records are well documented and go back well over a hundred years, but for the AKC, that decided to recognize the breed recently, it is "recent" and, I presume that is the authors perspective in writing this.
On this point, it should also be noted by the author (but is not) that registered AKC Border Collies were created based on "looks like" and not on herding or intelligence or even the historical records for the breed.
Today, there are two registries that exist competing with each other. Those that are recognized to be Border Collie workding dogs and those that are recognized by the AKC.
New Border Collie Owner.......2007-03-14
This is a very interesting book with a lot of specific information about Border Collies. I have found it to be very helpful, and refer to it on a daily basis regarding the many questions I, as new owner of a BC, encounter when dealing with my young BC. These are very complex dogs, not to be taken on casually, and this book acknowledges their potential difficulties, but also their extreme intelligence and need to work.
affectionate discussion of border collies.......2007-02-24
This book is clearly written by a border collie lover. The photographs are good and have cute captions, there are a number of drawings of the dogs, and the issues of living with a border collie are straight-forward and informative. I loved this book. I keep returning to some of the pictures I enjoyed most.

Excellent book which taught me all I needed to know about my new Border Collie. Highly recommended.
Border Collies: Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Breeding, Behavior, and Training.......2005-12-20
This is a great book for first time Border Collie owners. We adopted a dog identified only as a Collie mix from our local shelter. After attending a pet expo and encountering some Border rescue people they insisted he was definitely a Border. I started looking for some books about Borders and after reading this one it really became clear that we do have a Border! I really appreciated the facts of some of the idiosyncrasies of this breed such as how they are not big eaters and how they are such escape artists, something our dog definitely proved in the first days that we had him! While this book doesn't go into great detail on advanced training it is perfect for first time owners and gives a lot of great information.

Another great book.......2007-06-27
The only problem with his books are that they seem to read far too quickly. I find myself putting them down just to make them last. He knows how to pull you into a good story. "Nop's Trials" is a particularly great story. Unfortunately for me I stayed up all night with this one in hand until the very last page. Tired but glad to have read this one.
"Eminent Dogs, Dangerous Men" reads great but I'll lose no sleep from this one. A wonderful and captivating read. A real insiders perspective on working dogs and the sheepmen who work with them.
Great Read for People Who Shouldn't Get a Border Collie.......2007-04-25
This is a fascinating read for dog lovers.
I have occasionally had friends decide they wanted a Border Collie - friends I knew should not get a Border Collie. I give them this book and it does a great job of changing their minds. And it entertains them at the same time.
True story and entertaining.......2005-11-20
I liked this book so much and it stuck with me so when I first read it - the many comments of his "wee bitch" and naming her Gael that my Gael was named from this book. Border collie enthusiasts who see just names on the papers of their dogs may well see some of those names in here. Wonderful people and dogs in real life and an enjoyable read of working dogs, both trials and every day dogs, in Scotland. Loved the book...as someone else mentioned if you're not a fan of border collies you might not find it quite as engaging. Recommended reading for border collie owners!!
Wonderfully enjoyable and marvelously insightful!.......2003-04-25
A Border Collie owner, I could hardly wait to read this book, and the author's other books, Nop's Trials and Nop's Hope. A one-time visitor to Scotland who can't wait to go back, I eagerly looked forward to this book. And, I was not in the least bit disappointed on either count! The author's style is easy-going and readable, with a subtle humor throughout. His images are brilliant and I just felt like I was present for each scene that he wrote and a part of the action. Someone who has no interest in the working Border Collie might find the book dull. So also might someone who is not particularly interested in the very different lifestyle of the shepherd of Scotland. But for us who love the working Border Collie and find the life of the Scottish shepherd and his/her dog intriguing, this is an absolutely must-read book, over and over again!
Excellent read.......2001-10-01
This is a wonderful book any dog lover will thoroughly enjoy

Book Description
The sheep closed in around him like a big, woolly blanket. The
puppy had never been so scared or so excited in his life. Soon
he was racing, feinting, dodging – learning what it means to be
one of the proud breed of Border collies, the finest sheepherders
in the world. Then, almost overnight, his life is turned upside
down. He finds himself in a series of strange places, with no
sheep, his family gone. With nothing but the courage he was
born with and a dream, he searches for the life he once knew,
gathering names and adventures as he goes. For a short time,
he’s called Blackie. To the Goat Man, he’s Shep. To Hollerin,
he’s Spot. There’s one name that threatens to forever haunt
him – Sparky, the name Billy the circus man calls him when he
reaches for the whip. But there’s another name that he is given,
one that finally makes him feel at home . . .
Known for her rich character development, the author brings
all her skills to delving into the mind of a clever, philosophical,
and hopeful dog searching for a home.

Great children's book!.......2007-08-17
I purchased this book by accident and fell in love with it's character Jack the Border Collie and his quest for the perfect home. A heart warming story where Jack runs away from the spoiled child who dresses him up in doll cloths, the ultimate humiliation for a sheep dog. His adventures include hooking up with the Goat Man. I recommend it highly....!
*LET THIS DOG DANCE INTO YOUR HEART* .......2006-07-15
NO, wait a minute! Author Valerie Hobbs believes with " 'boy' ~ 'Blackie' ~ 'Shep' ~ 'Spot' ~ 'Sparky' ~ 'JACK' " that Dogs are NOT for Dancing.
The eyes of this multiple-named border collie tug at your heart from the cover of Valerie Hobbs' "SHEEP." 'Jack' is poised on the brink of adventure. He tells us all about his experiences on the way to achieving his life's dream: "A fellow's got to know he's made a difference." 'Jack' tells us that his passion is to be the best sheepherder ever. Valerie Hobbs' story may have been told many times but in the saga of 'Jack' there is a difference. This border collie has 'character' & 'determination' - - traits that most parents want to see in their offspring/litters of pups. The author includes the requisite reality checks from a sly hobo to a cruel circus master. As counter-balance 'Jack' absorbs a smattering of philosophy, Eisenhower vintage, from friendly adopted owner, the Goat Man: "Love and Grief grow in the same garden" / & / "make your sails of Patience."
Strengthening the story outline is a 'sniffing-out' of a dog's life told convincingly in 'first-person Canine.' This is the strongest part and reminds us that so-called "boys' stories" have great appeal for girls, too, and also grandmas brought up on "The Heart of a Dog" by Albert Payson Terhune (# 0899669840). Hobbs is as deft building her tale as 'Jack' becomes at streaking across fields and feinting sheep. So it is that 'Jack' continues to win (manage) friends and influence (herd) people to do what is good for them - - while delighting the readers of his auto-biography. .
Reviewer mcHAIKU suggests that 'Jack' may gain proud status as a classic.
Best of breed.......2006-04-11
People just don't give cover art enough credit. The cover of a book can make or break a novel, you know. Especially one for children. For example, if the art looks like it stepped out of a 1985 Twisted Sister music video, the book is going to suffer. If it's shiny and has lots of fantastical images crowding for attention, it will possibly do well as an impulse buy. Then you come to covers like the one accompanying Valerie Hobbs's, "Sheep". First of all, nice use of white space. Clever concept too. Who's gonna resist a picture of a dog imagining a sheep? But then you begin to understand just how smart the picture was. This is a book about a young border collie who dreams of herding sheep in spite of the increasingly difficult situations he finds himself in. The dog on the cover of this book is EXACTLY the right age. He's not too old and he's not too young. Add in the intelligent but quizzical look the dog is throwing you and you have a perfect complement to a lovely little book. So a tip of the hat to Patrick Doyle and a big big bow to Valerie Hobbs. "Sheep" is a lovely succinct little tale of a dog, his quest, and his place in the world.
Our hero has had lots of names over the years, but for the purposes of this review let's just call him Jack. Now Jack was born a border collie and he's a border collie through and through. His entire life is bent on the sole purpose of herding sheep someday. Unfortunately, tragedy hits his ranch long before he's old enough to start working alongside his father. When a fire forces Jack's owner to sell him off to the wide wide world, the little pup is devastated. He finds himself in a pet shop and sold to a little girl with let's-dress-the-dog-up-in-baby-clothes issues. With a quick leap over the fence and away, Jack is soon on the road and meeting all kinds of people. He jolts around with a man who lives entirely with a pack of goats. He takes up with a pair of "Of Mice and Men" type cons and after that is made to suffer in a two-bit circus. At last he finds a boy like himself who's alone in the world, and Jack finds that he can still make a difference in someone's life. Even if it doesn't involve herding sheep.
At a scant 115 pages, "Sheep" is an ideal book for any kid who's just gotten comfortable reading chapter books that don't have pictures in them. Jack's tale is always exciting but that doesn't mean it has to rely on constant action. If Hobbs is good at anything she knows how to carry a theme through a book without making it overly obvious or simplified. One of the things I liked about this story was how Jack had a certain innate dignity. Any time that dignity was compromised he would extricate himself from the situation and move on to another. This happens with his first adoption, results in a severe beating he receives later on, and is at the core of why he sticks with the boy he loves at the end. Add in the title's humor and the fact that you never have a moment's doubt that this is a dog you're listening to and you've got yourself a fine little book.
Of course books from a dog's point of view are hardly new. The first thing I thought of when I saw, "Sheep" was Ann Martin's, "A Dog's Life". Dog P.O.V.s exist in everything from the fantastical ("Dogsbody" by Diana Wynne Jones) to the comical ("I, Jack" by Patricia Finney). No one ever gets sick of them and it seems as if you can never have enough of them around. Certainly "Sheep" feels fresh and fine with every page. A great title for kids who refuse to read anything but dog books, kids who are reluctant readers, and kids who just like a good story. Simply swell.
Book Description
The Border Collie's strong instincts, quick wits and intelligence have proved both a delight and a challenge to owners. The book explains how to address this intelligence, through training, work and socialization.
Customer Reviews:
Very informative and full of nifty pictures.......2007-09-08
While the entire book was jammed packed with useful information and background history of the Border Collie, I especially enjoyed the chapter where 6 dogs were comparatively judged. Head shots, front, side and rear views of 3 male and 3 female black & white Border Collies were each critiqued by judges from England, the U.S. and New Zealand. Very interesting how each judge interpreted his/her country's standard of ideal Border Collie conformation, as well as being helpful in pointing out flaws of basic dog anatomy in general..
A must read before you purchase that puppy!
The Ultimate Border Collie.......2007-03-08
I got this for my daughter-in-law for Christmas. She has it "dog-earred" and says it is truly the ultimate border collie book
Wonderful book!.......2003-03-06
Thank goodness for the wise writing and lovely pictures in this book. She does her best to dispell the myth of the 'genius'dog and the other myth of the 'border collies are black and white and stick thin small dogs'.
As an owner of a mostly white border collie, who is sometimes dismayed by people's comments about 'well she must have (insert breed) in her to be white', it is heartening to see pictures of every possible shade and shape of border collie. Border collies are very diverse - that's because the emphasis is (until recently, some may say) on a working dog, not a certain 'look'. It's their quirky minds that make them so different. A few hours with an obsessive fly chaser and you'll understand :-)
She has great sections on puppies, activities for your BC and lots of history and opinion. Some of the information may rub people the wrong way - bc people tend to be opinionated!
Absolutely worth reading.......2002-06-11
As a soon-to-be Border Collie owner, this book has proven to be very helpful. Its chapter on puppies and puppy care from the day you bring it to your home is very good. Living in Denmark, you cannot find many books about the Border Collie so I was very pleased to find this one. I am picking up my little puppy in less than 3 weeks and after reading this book, I feel confident that we have made the right choice regarding dog breed and the breeder. I can especially recommend this book if it's the first time you're getting a dog.
Great book on Border Collies, written by a true expert.......2002-01-11
This author has done an excellent job describing the Border Collie. Whether it's behavior, motivations, breed history, stregths, weaknesses, she demonstrates that she is truly an expert. This is not a generic dog book with Border Collie pictures pasted in, it is an excellent reference that I intend to use for many years to come. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who has or is considering purchasing a Border Collie.

No nonsense guide to your border collie.......2007-08-22
This is book #2 for me on raising border collies. I started with what I would call 'Border Collies for Dummies' Your Border Collies Life : Your Complete Guide to Raising Your Pet from Puppy to Companion, which I highly recommend as an introduction to the breed. This book by Marjorie Quarton picks up where the other left off. Ms. Quarton's experience with and deep sensitivity to this breed shows throughout the book. She is so close to the land and the patterns of the dog's life that I want to jump right into the scene with her. That said, for American readers in particular, 'The Working Border Collie' is better read after the primer book has been digested. This book by Ms. Quarton does focus more on working dogs, but I found it 80% or more relevant to the breed in general. I give this book my highest rating, for a combination of content and style. There may be more information than the average owner wants to know about breeding, but I found the material rather interesting even though breeding is not my intent. It will allow me to ask better questions of breeders for my next dog. A nice supplement to this book is the latter section by Carole Presberg, from Massachusetts, on the American border collie. We do view our dogs somewhat differently here than the English/Irish do, and this section gives an American context to some of the breed definition and club/organization topics covered by Ms. Quarton. I confess however to being delightfully amused at times with the core sections written by Marjorie Quarton, in all of their Irish/Englishness; a litte bit of Barbara Woodhouse and James Harriot combined.
i liked the book a lot........1999-06-01
This book was good. It helped me learn things about my dog that I never knew before. I wish I had this book before. If you have a border collie you really need to read this book.
