A Must for new puppy owners.......2007-07-14
Wonderful book with many common sense tips for the new dog owner, but do be prepared with tissues as it will make you cry. It will make you laugh as well though. I wish I had bought this book before I got my puppy
A wonderful addition!!.......2006-06-27
This item arrived quickly and in perfect condition. It has been a great joy to read and the photos are enchanting. A must read for every corgi lover!!!
A memoir to a beautiful and courageous corgi.......2006-04-10
As an owner of two lovable welsh corgis and past owner of one who is enjoying life over the Rainbow Bridge (probably frolicking with Mail Order Annie) this book was an absolute joy. The personalities of Corgis are so similar and yet each had its own quirkiness. The story of Annie's demise was so similar to what we experienced with our Indy it was a stirring and poignant memory. Indy also died in our arms on the way to the vet. Indy was also bred at Terenelf. I hope everyone has the experience of life with a dog, it is as rewarding and joyful as Mr. Weinstein beautifully illustrates.
insightful book for dog owners and dog lovers.......2005-05-26
...What really amazed me was how well Mr. Weinstein captured Annie's personality and spirit, and truly brought her to life on every page...
As more people read this book, I predict that a new word will creep into the lexicon...the "corgi-cule," defined by Mr. Weinstein as "the smallest particle of food still discernable to the eyes and/or nose of a Welsh Corgi -- and often too small to be detected by humans (or, possibly, even electron microscopes)."
It is moments like these -- or when his 4-year-old neighbor tells her parents that the stars are Annie's footprints going to Heaven -- that make you laugh and cry and truly touch your heart...
This is a wonderfully insightful book for new puppy-owners, especially Corgi puppy-owners...
The funny thing about Annie is that she was no more special or
extraordinary than my dog or yours. But what Mr. Weinstein manages to do is write the beautiful memoir that I would want to write for my dog.

We Love Mail Order Annie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-05-16
My son and I read this book shortly after we received our first little Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Minnie and we fell in love with it, just as we have with our little Min Min!!. The book is a wonderful story of Mail Order Annie and her owner, Howard. It is amazing just how smart and special Pems are and Howard tells the story wonderfully with a great amount of cute photos of little Annie. If anyone is considering getting a Pembroke (or if you just love wonderful dog stories), I whole-heartedly recommend Howard's book!! You will soon realize how these little sweetiepies can touch your heart and never let go.....Thanks so much, Howard!!

Book Description
A major rediscovery! This gripping domestic drama set in 1920s Montana is the finest, most powerful work by a much admired (and unjustly overlooked) novelist of the American West. It tells the story of two brothers - and a woman and her son, whose arrival on the brothers' ranch shatters an already uneasy peace.
Customer Reviews:
Horribly boring!!!!!.......2007-10-02
I am stunned by all of the wonderful reviews for this book. I thought it was by far, the worst book I have read since high school. It could not have moved any slower. The thing I did like about it was the ending and things turn around to get you. Just so much of it was completely out of left field. Boring! Boring! Boring!
Love to hate Phil!.......2007-08-05
This is an unbelievably wonderful novel to sink your teeth into. A page turner of high literary merit, accessible and intelligent. Fabulous craft and language, a most diabolical villain who drives even saints to wish him ill.
Yes he is intelligent, arrogant, rough, caustic, poisonous, and evil, all to hide one tiny chink in his armor that nonetheless, one person manages to find.
Read this book! My one regret is that Thomas Savage doesn't know how popular he is today.
The afterword by Annie Proulx reveals even more about Savage's motivation for the novel, and provides an extra ounce of satisfaction to to novel's end.
Delicious.......2007-01-22
Read this novel as slowly as you possibly can, for every paragraph is painted with no fewer than two rich coats of molasses-thick paint, and sometimes silver paint in one layer reflects off of another.
Hunted by a dog, chasing prey as a dog, or dog pursuing dog?
Savage leaves nothing to chance, for this novel will speak to all three.
Skip the after-word, initially.
Cruel, stunning, haunting.......2006-11-11
A completely unexpected and disturbingly powerful character study of a small group of characters in the West, circa 1940s. The prose here is incredible, and the plot unfolds slowly and myteriously. Palpable tension-- the author knew precisely what he woas doing-- with an ending I truly didn't see coming. One of the most remarkable books I've ever read.
A work of art........2006-07-17
Thank you, Amazon, for recommending this exquisite novel to me as a Gold Box special. With an afterword by Annie Proulx and the recent success of Brokeback Mountain, this exceptional piece of western literature should now find the audience Thomas Savage so richly deserved in 1967. As restrained and sparing in language as its central antagonist, Phil Burbank, Savage has the uncanny gift of eloquence through omission, allowing the reader to read between the lines. I was captivated by his talent, and jolted by an entirely unexpected but immensely satisfying conclusion. This book has been five times optioned for film, yet never made. I doubt that will go on much longer.
Book Description
Two hot topics—male knitters and knits for dogs—come together in this one fabulous, fun volume! It’s a stand-out-from-the-crowd collection that features strong, colorful, and masculine designs that will appeal to men of all ages...plus companion items for their four-legged friends. The writing is informative, supportive, and humorous; crowd-pleasing images of well-dressed pooches with their sartorially splendid owners add to the entertainment. Geared toward knitters of all levels—but with an emphasis on intermediate and advanced techniques—the projects will wow readers. Imagine a quirky Rasta-inspired hat and a cool matching doggie jacket. Or a classic gray, cabled vest in merino wool and cashmere—one for him and one for Fido. Hit the town in a colorful patchwork pullover; matching saddlebags turn walk time into a fashionable outing. The projects are offered in a wide range of sizes to fit a variety of male and doggie body types—and, as an added feature, there are tips and anecdotes from more than a dozen male knitters.

Great designs.......2007-09-02
I bought this book after seeing one of the hats on "Knitty Gritty" and was not disappointed. The designs are wearable and just beautiful, and instructions are clear and thoughtfully given. There are many sweater designs here that I will eventually knit up. Can't wait.
Something for all experience levels.......2007-03-01
I love this book! It's as simple as that. I love the dogs (how did the photographer get them to do that?), I love to look at the handsome (the "take home to met the folks" type) male models, and most of all I love the patterns. There is something for every experience level, from small/easy dog toys to a sweater that incorporated cables AND fair isle, which will be my first project as soon as I finish my current project. (I can't wait) I've read a few tutorials in the front of a few knitting books in my time, and this one is very well written, with easy to understand sizing charts for men and for dogs, both of which can be hard to find.
You won't be disappointed.
A great one for your knitting library.......2007-02-28
It is so hard to get decent knitting patterns for men --this book delivers. The doggie patterns are cute too.
Love the book!.......2007-02-28
I currently have no family of the four legged variety (does one count a crawling baby?) but I have plenty of plans for the mens patterns! Snatched this from my local B&N as soon as it came out, and I love it. Definetely recommend!
it's ok.......2007-01-10
men's fashion has always been disappointing, and men's knitting projects are no exception. try as they may to push the envelope, most of the designs look acceptable for heathclif huxtable and no one else. a few of the patterns have potential if you change yarns from those suggested, but there really isn't anything here that you can't find in every other men's knitting books.
overall, it's just ok. not a lot to get excited about.
Customer Reviews:
Not Overly Charming.......2007-03-07
The only reason I read this book is because there is one character with autism. Katani, of Beacon Street Girls (Boston) fame has an older sister named Kelley who has autism.
Katani is friends with a group of girls in the Boston area. They call themselves the Beacon Street Girls as a nod to their neighborhood. Although I didn't care for most of the characters, save for Katani and her family and the adult characters, I did like the realistic way Kelley was presented. The second youngest of 4 daughters, Kelley has limited social skills; her verbalizations are bizarre to those who don't know her; is highly charged; cannot stand bright lights or loud noises. At the story's opening, the girls go to an outdoor festival. Disaster abounds whn the BSG mascot (an adorable mixed breed dog) runs away. The girls go frantic; send each other text messages and e-mails; blame and self recrimination abounds. Kelley has a believable meltdown as she loves the dog and can't bear noise and confusion.
Luckily, a program called hippotherapy (horseback riding treatment) for autistic youth becomes available. Kelley is enrolled. Katani is enrolled against her will as Kelley has to have "a peer to supervise her." Naturally Katani grows to love riding; proves to have talent and enjoys trotting off with her sister.
Another disaster - the stable may close due to lack of funding. As you have already guessed by now, the BSG saves the stable; the dog is returned and readers will have to wade through the book to find out how.
A bit too girly for me - I could not stand the inane and irksome "OMG" talk among other things; pink and lavender (IKKKK); those silly girls save for Katani and her sisters, but I did like the Boston setting.
A good book to pair this one with is A challenge for Brittany (Choose the right)
THE BEST BOOK EVER!!!.......2006-12-07
Marty- the BSG's little mascot is lost but is finally found by the famous Robbie Flores. Flores offers 10,000 for the little dude and half of the BSG want to accept it. Katani would like to except the award because High Hopes riding stable (a stable that helps autistic kids like Katani's sister horseback ride)would be shutting down if it doesn't raise 10,000 dollars in a week. Charolotte though is putting articles about Marty everywhere, desperatly trying to find Marty. The BSG has one HUGE problem:they don't know if they should take the money or not. A MUST READ!!!!!!!
Amazing!.......2006-07-13
This is a great book! Along with all the other BSG books this is great! A MUST read for all girls!!!
The Best BSG!.......2006-06-24
Wow! THis book is great! Its the best one yet, a MUST read!

Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-01-19
I have met the author when she visited my school she is very nice, My teacher read us this story because the author came and everybody loved it. It teaches you people do get better. It is a great book for children and teaches a great lesson.
"Annie Loses Her Leg but Finds Her Way"......ALL THUMBS UP!!.......2002-11-22
I had heard about the book on a television program which showed how this book was being read in hospitals to children who were cancer patients in order to help them understand the reasons for surgery, treatment, etc. So I purchased this book for my 4 year old daughter after learning that I had myself had breast cancer, and required a mastectomy.
In this book, Annie, a dog, gets cancer. Her owners take her to the veterinarian for surgery. When Annie comes home, she only has three legs. Max, her dog brother, doesn't understand this. Annie explains that she lost her leg in order to save her life!
This book is wonderful! It really helped my daughter understand my situation in a way that only good children's literature can!
(I am a 14 year veteran public school teacher, by the way, so I know good children's literature when I see it!)
If you, your child, a family member, your pet, or anyone else you know is going through this horrible disease, get this book and read it to your child!
(I am happy to report that I am now cancer-free, by the way!)
Dog-gone Cancer.......2002-08-17
I teach a summer class about different dog breeds. I use episodes of Breed All About It from Animal Planet channel. The episode was about Springer Spaniels, and this book as well as the author were featured. This inspired me to purchase the books for an after-school program I run. I love dogs and I am also an EMT, this is a great way to incoporate both of my interests into the program and help those children who made need to deal with this issue at a point in their lives.
Delightful fun for kids and dog lovers!.......2001-05-26
This is a sweet book about two family pets--Springer spaniels--and how they communicate when Annie, the older dog, loses her leg to cancer. The mischievious younger dog Max brings a smile to all with his antics and attitude. This is an excellent tool for getting kids to use their imagination, talk about writing, mental and visual images. This book sets the stage for the author's later books with more adventures for Max and Annie.
What a wonderful book!.......1999-12-31
My kids and I met the author at a book signing in Chagrin Falls, OH and she is a neat lady. She brought her dogs, Annie and Max, and sold this book and the other about Max. They are great books for kids and teach great lessons. In this book, Annie loses her leg to cancer but recovers and teaches kids that you don't have to be perfect to be happy and live a great life. Get this book and Max's Wild Goose Chase for your kids!

Cute story.......2001-06-19
Actually, I haven't read this book---my daughter did. To me. Shes a beginning reader and did quite well. She was able to enjoy the story and read it capably---which says something, I think, about the excellent quality of the author. The illustrations were fun, too. Henry's cousin, Annie, "deserves" a nice pet. Search out the perfect pet for her with Henry and his parents.
Henry and Mudge and Annie's Perfect Pet.......2000-06-20
My name is Morgan ...... and I am six years old. I have read all of the Henry and Mudge books and this one is my all time favorite. I am a big pet fan and Annie finding the perfect pet (she got to choose from a bunch) made me very happy. I could not wait to turn the pages and find out which pet Annie would pick. I was very happy that she choose the cute white bunny. Henry and Mudge books are the best! And my mom loves them too!

A Puppy for Annie.......2007-03-25
This is the sweetest book and the illustrations are beautiful. The title caught my eye because my 3 year old's name is Annie - she loves this book and we read it together all of the time. This book will go in her keepsake box. I wanted to buy it at Barnes & Noble but Amazon was way cheaper. Worth the price - its a great story.

Inexperienced handlers need to read this .......2007-05-12
If you are new to the show world this is a must. Annie describes her early days before she became a judge as well as when she began judging. Some of the antics that went on are priceless!
Annie.......2007-03-09
Annie On Dogs is a compilation of magazine articles written by Anne Rogers Clark...one of the most respected judges in the dog world. When Mrs Clark spoke, you listened!! And learned!! Her death in December 2006 was a blow to all who knew her and she may never be "replaced".
If you wish to learn how to conduct yourself in various dog show situations (some very funny), then this is the book for you. If you wish to understand what goes on behind the glamour of televised dog shows, wish to understand things about those crazy people in the ring and just WHY that judge chose that dog, get this book and start reading at the beginning. The wisdom on the pages will astound you.
I was fortunate enough to both show under and steward for Mrs Clark and base my own judging format on her example. Read Mrs Clark's book and you'll never regret it!!! A 5 star rating is not high enough. Make this a 20!!!!!!

Loving pets in loving stories.......2002-11-04
This fun anthology gives us four different novellas, each including a Christmas setting and delightful dogs. We get to understand people and events from the dogs' points of view and their uncanny senses--and the way they can sometimes gently nudge their people together. Loving pets combine with loving stories to make a marvelous combination that's a great read any time of year.
Victoria Alexander starts off with "Shakespeare and the Three Kings," set in 19th century England. Sir Oliver Stanhope's great aunt, the woman who raised him so lovingly, has died and left Oliver charged with the care of her three beloved Yorkshire Terriers, Melchoir, Balthazar, and Gaspar. She has also arranged for one D.K. Lawrence to come and train the Yorkies for him. When Diana Lawrence, once the love of Oliver's life, shows up at his home with her Great Dane Shakespeare in tow, Oliver wonders at his Aunt Ellie's true motives--but of course goes along with his aunt's last wish. Lady Eleanor's hopes for her nephew to find true love tug at the reader's heart--be sure to have a hanky ready.
In "Athena's Christmas Tail" by Nina Coombs, Athena that knows her mistress, Mercy, isn't as happy as she should be, especially since she is newly married. And Viscount Brockton acts strangely towards his bride, as well. Athena knows he likes his new wife, but why is he so distant from her? When they buy Hannibal from a cruel master, the two dogs put their noses together to try to get their master and mistress to see what any dog can tell immediately--that they really do care for each other. Another sweet, emotional story.
We move to the present day for "Away in a Shelter" by Annie Kimberlin, a funny, original twist on the snowed-in-log-cabin story. When they signed up to volunteer for the Christmas holidays at the animal shelter, neither Camille nor Roger realized they'd be sharing duty with the volunteer they liked least: the snobby lady lawyer and the big guy who always looked at her like she was a pariah. Both of them want to adopt the little dog who was left on the steps of the shelter; Camille calls her Gracie and Roger calls her Splinter. When the snow storm doesn't allow Camille and Roger to leave the shelter on Christmas Eve, they are forced to get to know each other as human beings--and find not only do they have a love of dogs and cats in common, but that they actually enjoy each other's company, and made some bad assumptions about each other at the outset. This is one of the best contemporary romances I've read all year. The characters and setting are all so very real, likeable and sympathetic. I was very sorry to see this story end and am very much looking forward to more from Ms. Kimberlin. (Writing as Annie Smith as of October 2002, with a new novel out -- yahoo!)
Miriam Raftery wraps it up with "Mr. Wright's Christmas Angel," which opens in present-day Los Angeles. Joy is upset that she won't be able to fulfill her daughter's fondest Christmas wish: she wants a daddy. The Santa Claus at the hospital that Joy has just been fired from gives Joy two airline tickets to Alaska, saying that perhaps a vacation from insurance forms and administration is just what she and her daughter Holly need. When Joy and Holly reach Noel, Alaska, the location of the cabin of Kriss Kringle, where they are to be guests for a few days, their rental car runs into a snowbank--they'll have to walk to the cabin. A big white dog, Frankincense, finds them and leads his master, Nicholas, Mr. Kringle's caretaker, to them. Nicholas is kind, if gruff and old-fashioned, not understanding what Joy means by "car" and "telephone." In fact, Joy marvels, Mr. Kringle's cabin has no electricity, no plumbing, and of course no phone. What kind of strange neighborhood have she and Holly been brought to? When a blizzard makes travel even out to the road impossible, Joy, Nicholas, and Holly all have more time to get to know each other... and like what they find. A happy story and satisfying end to this collection.
Warm and Cuddly Christmas.......2000-06-19
This is just a great collection of Chrismas stories. If you are a animal (more specifically a dog) lover you will truly enjoy this collection. My personal favorite is "Away in a Shelter" by Annie Kimberlin. The main characters Camille and Roger are a lot of fun to get to know and "Splinter" or "Grace" which ever you prefer is a true matchmaker. Victoria Alexander contributes a great historical piece with so many matchmakers the hero and heroine cannot help but finally get together. This story definatly contains lots of dog matchmaking fun. This book is well worth the read and it is extremely enjoyable...especially with a cup of hot coco and a furry friend.
Four Stories in One.......1998-07-01
This collection of novellas is a delight for the dog and romance lover. My favorite was Away in a Shelter, by Annie Kimberlin. An innocent puppy, two lonely dog-loving volunteers, a Christmas Eve blizzard that strands the three at the animal shelter--what more do you need for love to blossom? The puppy is wonderful--very much a character in her own right, and yet totally canine. Nothing mystical or anthropomorphic about her. Just Puppy Magic--which works on everyone! The man and woman work through their romance-traditional initial dislike very believably, especially considering the amount of time they have to do it. Real characters, honest settings and believable dogs add up to a great Christmas story which could be enjoyed any time of year.
Wonderful, heart-warming, humorous tale........1998-01-16
Set in Victorian England, this book has a great beginning, and it gets better and better the more you read. Sir Oliver Thornton Stanhope inherits from the beloved aunt who raised him three spoiled-rotten Yorkshire terriers whom he, at first, sees as nothing but "rats with fur, far too tiny to do anything but yap and get underfoot." To ease the transition, his aunt made provisions before her death for a dog trainer to come teach them some manners. Oliver reluctantly agrees to the houseguest, then is shocked to discover the trainer is the woman he once loved whom he thought betrayed him. The heroine, Diana, and her huge Great Dane, are very appealing characters. The hero is very sympathetic, too, and overall, the book is a funny, touching, truly wonderful read!

Product Description
This book stars Max, Annie and the puppy, Tak. Based on an actual incident, this is the story of what happens when a new puppy joins the Max and Annie family. Annie feels motherly, but Max is mad and sad. He feels he has been replaced. The only way to get everyone's attention and to keep the puppy under his control is to devise a set of rules for the new dog. As usual, Max goes too far and makes up too many rules for his little brother, Tak. Annie steps in and helps everyone in the family appreciate each other, and Max sees his brother in a new light. The book was written in consultation with over 12,000 elementary and middle school students in the midwest and is appropriate for those bringing home a new baby, a new puppy or anyone who wants a good laugh.

Recommended reading for anyone having a new baby .......2004-11-06
Max is a dog who was adopted by a very nice family and who, along with another dog named Annie thought things were just fine -- until the family brings home a puppy called Tak! An unhappy Max lays down a lot of rules to young Tak, rules that don't permit any fun stuff to happen. Until Tak shows Max that the two of them can be friends and have a great deal of rather messy fun together. Charmingly written in a rhyming text by reading specialist Sandra J. Philipson and profusely illustrated by syndicated cartoonist and children's magazine and book illustrator Jenny Campbell, Max's Rules is specifically recommended reading for anyone having a new baby added to their family, those families who are adopting a baby, and those families who are bringing an adopted animal into their home. The additions of enrichment activities including a Readers' Theater, word and vocabulary builders, and writing suggestions, make Max's Rules a particularly appropriate acquisition for school library collections as well.
