Best Puppy Book for Kids!.......2007-10-05
As preparation for a puppy for our 10-year-old son, we had him commit to reading this book first. Each night he read alone, and then we read together. It was not only informative, easy to read and follow, but a great shared time as well! It was the perfect "first" book to introduce our son into the upcoming responsibilities of having a dog. I also realized how neglectful I was in raising our now adult Labrador, and how much I want to re-train her with our son's puppy, too!
Great book for kids.......2007-08-23
If you have a puppy or young dog, this book is great for your kids who want to help train it. It has great pictures and some neat tricks for the dog to learn.
Very informative book for children 9 and up........2006-01-30
The illustrations in this book are beautiful and easy to understand. Children can follow and understand how to care for and train their new puppy. This is not a book for people who are looking to learn about dog behavior the history of a dog. You will need to find a more informative book like; Good Owners, Great Dogs by Brian Kilcommons for that kind of information. But for older children who want to learn to care for their dog this is a good book for them.
JoAnn Dahan author of Kids Training Puppies in 5 Minutes and TV Show Host of Kids Training Puppies.
excellent book for children.......2005-02-24
This is an excellent book for your children if you plan to make puppy a new member of your family. It guides the children through the various stages of training a puppy, has good photographs supporting the text and highlights certain important phrases. Whislt it, of course, does not cover all aspects of dog traing, it does not need to do that: the training will be the adults responsibility, and not the child's. The child however can and should support those efforts and by reading this book can add to the training and hence become a responsible dog owner her/ himself.
PRETTY GOOD BOOK.......2003-10-18
Pretty good. Easy to understand unlike a lot of other dog books. I think it's just a little lacking in information, but it's a great book to start with, above average.

Terrific book for all parents of kids & dogs!.......2007-08-14
This is one of the very best resources I've found for families with children and dogs. It has lots of practical kid-friendly and dog-friendly tips and ideas. I've recently read hundreds of books on similar topics while researching a book I'm writing, and this one really stood out. As a child/family psychologist, I was impressed with how solid it was, and as a therapy dog trainer, I thought the advice about dogs was spot-on! It deserves all the stars that everyone has given it!!
Practical and positive!.......2007-05-30
Colleen writes in a reader friendly manner. Her life experiences as Mom and dog trainer have brought together this wonderful resourceful book families can turn to time and time again! I recommend this book to all families I work with as it describes practical and positive solutions for challenging and hectic lives! :)
Two Thumbs Up!.......2007-04-06
There are certainly other kids and dogs books out there but, this one is so far the best I've found. Colleen Pelar gives great, practical tips for parents of children at all ages that can be put to use immediately. I don't have children but, am active in rescue and am always looking for more training to help adopters and I learned so much. This book will be required reading for all adopters with children going forward. GREAT read!!!
Finally-- a really great kids and dogs book!.......2006-04-22
Finally-- A really good book on how to live with kids and dogs. Most dog trainers don't have a lot of good things to say about kids (although I overhead one saying that she thought they tasted a lot like chicken!), but Colleen has written a book for parents by a parent who is also an excellent dog trainer. Colleen tells it like it is, from someone who knows. Her child-friendly, family-friendly and dog-friendly approach is realistic, safe, and right on the mark. I cannot say enough good things about Ms. Pelar or this book. Please read it and get a copy for your favorite family!
As the director of training for the 4th largest shelter in the country, I see every day that the consequences of people not having this information is that dogs end up in shelters. I applaud Ms. Pelar for writing it and helping keep dogs in their homes through education.

A "must-have" for any parent considering a canine addition to the family.......2005-11-11
Living with Kids and Dogs... Without Losing Your Mind is a no-nonsense advice guide for parents that emphasizes realistic and practical solutions to common parent/pet-owner problems. Dog training facility manager Colleen Pelar covers when not to get a dog (children under 5 are not old enough to interact with a pet responsibly and require supervision around animals; children in general cannot be burdened with the requirement to care for the pet or see it taken away - if the parent doesn't have the resources to follow up on a child's dog care then the family should not get a dog!), how to select an animal with suitable family temperament, how to prevent dog bites, and issues specific to children of various age groups from infant to teenager, and how to help one's children say goodbye to a beloved family pet when it passes on. Black-and-white photographs illustrate this no-nonsense, plain terms guide to dog care and managing a family with kids and dogs. A "must-have" for any parent considering a canine addition to the family.

Good Book on Dog Training.......2004-05-17
This book might be old, but it is very helpful. I use it to train all my dogs and some of them are very well behaved. (It even works with stubborn breeds!). DTFK tells about housebreaking, obedience training, tricks, and problem solving. The methods work and the dogs like them. If you get a dog, please buy this book too. Read it cover to cover before you begin with your dog's training, though.
out of date techniques.......2002-10-30
The latest version of this book is from 1988 and the book uses lots of traditional, but largely out of date corrections that have been replaced in most obedience training circles with postitive training techniques. I have elected to return the book instead of having my niece learn these dog obedience techniques.
Awsome.......2001-09-24

Making training elementary.......2007-04-20
Reviewed by Stephanie and J.T. (age 9) Rollins for Reader Views (4/07)
"Kids Training Puppies in 5 Minutes" is simple to read. All the words are appropriate for those beginning to read. On most pages, the message is simple and concise. There is a list of tips that are in bullet point form.
There are two different puppies shown throughout the book. A little boy and a girl are shown demonstrating the training tips.
Repetition is used throughout "Kids Training Puppies in 5 Minutes." J.T. asked at one time if he was reading the same page over, because the concepts are the same in many cases. Throughout the book, it is stressed that the children/trainers must develop a relationship with their puppies.
J.T.: "This book is good. I liked it. My friends would like it, too. I do not have a puppy. I have a dog. I am going to train my dog with this book."
This book can be used with preschoolers, also. The pictures are attention-grabbing. The concept is simple. There is a lot of repetition.
I wish there were more children involved in the photographs. There are only two children in the book. To show some diversity would allow all children to relate more to the trainers/children.
JoAnn Dahan and photographer, Walter George, created a wonderful book. "Kids Training Puppies in 5 Minutes" is not only effective in teaching children; it is also enjoyable to read. This book will teach your child the responsibility they have when they have a puppy. It also will help your child create a bond with their pet.
Enthusiastically recommended especially for young dog owners........2007-02-04
Written by veteran dog trainer JoAnn Dahan, Kids Training Puppies in 5 Minutes is a guide written to teach young children puppy training basics. Housebreaking, sitting or lying down on command, coming when called, and learning to stay or heel when told are all covered. The very simple instructions and color photographs make Kids Training Puppies in 5 Minutes quite easy to understand, and the accompanying DVD makes step-by-step instruction crystal clear. Enthusiastically recommended especially for young dog owners. "House Breaking: When you wake up, take your puppy outside. Once outside say, 'Hurry, Sam, hurry.' This will help your puppy go potty. When your puppy goes potty say, 'Good Sam.' (Remember to use your puppy's name.) A puppy will have to go potty shortly after you feed him."
The ease and enjoyment of the book, even for adults!.......2004-07-23
I was immediately impressed with how easy and clearly illustrative the book is. My youngest child was able to read the book herself. She found the pictures of the puppies and children aspects of the book she could relate to personally.
It's clear that JoAnn Dahan has a real handle on how to instruct children, training puppies, and making it easy for parents!

My name is Christi, I am 7 years old. I just got a new lab puppy from my Mom and Dad her name is Ginny. Before I could have Ginny I had to promised I would care for her and train her. This book is so great,it is very easy to read and the pictures of the lab puppies and kids are so cute. I taught Ginny to sit and lie down really fast. I think every kid with a puppy should have this book.

Book Description
In this novel book the author points out that neither the dog nor the child will undertake the responsibility to train itself; therefore, it is up to you to determine the behaviour you wish to see, then communicate your desires to your pet (child). This book will teach you to communicate in Canine. Ancedotes in the book are often unusual and sometimes outrageous, but they work. Instructions are in an easy to follow format and you and your child and dogs will profit from it.

Excellent parenting insights for dogs and children.......1999-01-10
The book surveys the developmental stages of a dog's life, focusing on the training/parenting needs of each stage and paralleling these stages with those of our own children.
The comparisons are interesting both for application to man's best friend and children. The key concept developed is what is leadership and what are the responsibilities of the pack leader (Alpha--male/female).
The text is very application-oriented and provides many examples, both positive and negative, of behaviors and responses.
Finally, the leadership skills discussed in the text may very well have applications beyond just dogs and children, perhaps business management as well.
Fun reading with many applications and yet doesn't fail to maintain the focus on developing a better relationship with your canine friend.

Excellent book for kids who LOVE dogs!!.......1998-12-25
This book is GREAT! I am activly involved with showing my Flat Coated Retriever in conformation, juniors, and obedience, this book told me alot. Altough it doesn't tell you to actually train your dog for competition, it gives you the low down. It tells which orginizations sponser it and if it group- specific, what breeds are allowed. An excellent addittion to any dog crazy kid's bookshelf!
