This is a fantastic book for anyone interested in the Bernese Mountain Dog or BMD. I love everything about this book. It's hardcover, the pages are smooth and shiny, and there are TONS of color photos. Not to mention, the information that this author churns out in this book is indispensable. Possibly the best book on Berners that are out there right now.

If you enjoy the BMD breed, this book is a must have. The photos capture the beauty and personality of the Berner much beter than other books that I have seen about the breed.
Enchanting, thoroughly absorbing book on the "King of Dogs".......2006-05-16
This book sets the standard of "compleatness" on the Bernese Mountain Dog. It is way beyond that of just a typical guidebook. Bernd Guenther has left, proverbially, no stone unturned here. The author's breadth of research, resources, insights, and details are on a level of the highest competence as to be priceless; this kind of preliminary (for the new and even seasoned owner) information cannot be overestimated.
But it's more than just an information book for breeders and owners; you are made to completely inhabit the world of this legendary, mythological breed. Guenther takes you on a delightful life-guide of several Berners, noting distinct personality traits, whimsical anecdotes, and a good deal of sharp-viewed observations. Without ever being heavy-handed, Guenther takes the reader onto a serious study of the breed. As he makes clear, this is an extraordinary dog, one that needs like considerations. No prospective Berner owner should be without this book, as the author has the kind of sagacity and knowledge that was gleaned as a true lover and connoisseur of not just his own dogs, but for the breed in general. Indeed, some of the information is not to be taken lightly, especially genetic problems, and some tough sacrifices one must potentially make. And - this is a good thing - the book will either make you say a firm "yes" or "no" when considering bringing a Berner into your life. On the one hand, this beautiful, loyal, human-like dog may have you on the phone tomorrow looking for one; on the other, the responsibilities can be made to seem overwhelming - be prepared to GIVE UP your life BB (Before Berner) as you have known it! You cannot get any dog as if you would a piece of furniture, but with Berners, there are absolutely no options: the dog has to be a total part of your family, your life. The Bernese Mountain Dog: A Dog Of Destiny by Bernd Guenter (a member of the Dog Writers Association of America and the World Dog Press Association) is so much more than just a simple coffeetable book of wonderful photographs showcasing a specialized canine breed. The superbly presented and "user friendly" text commences with an introduction and history of the breed, then addresses the "Bernese Mountain Dog Standard". Then their are entire chapters devoted to puppyhood, the adolescent Berner, the adult Berner, showing the Berne (European Style), breeding the Berner, and health issues (including veterinarian selection, vaccinations, deworming, experternal parasites, and specific health problems affecting the breed). Enhanced with appendices for Breed Standards; Useful Addresses; Bibliography; and List of Abbreviations, The Bernese Mountain Dog is comprehensive, exceptionally well written, superbly illustrated throughout, and a "must" addition for the reading list and reference shelf for anyone who's canine companion is the Bernese mountain dog.
A MUST book for Bernese Mountain Dog Lovers.......2004-05-18
Every photograph in Bernd's book is literally a work of art. The detail in the photographs and the background scenery just takes your breath away. I especially love the photographs in "The Berner Circle of Life" on pages 134 through 141. Bernd chronicles the life of a newborn berner through his senior years. He has posed the Berner in the same stance from ages 5 weeks through 9 years. It is fascinating to see the progression from a young puppy, to a gangly teenager, to a full grown adult male who is absolutely gorgeous!!
It is not just the photographs that make this book a "must have" for every Berner person and for those who are seeking information about Berners; the text is also excellent. Bernd Guenter is from Germany and his command of the English language is absolutely amazing!! This fantastic book is full of great
information about the breed - you can tell that Bernd has lived with Berners and has been around Berners and their people for many years and from many countries. He is able to take his knowledge of Berners and turn it into a most informative and delightful book that is easy to read.
You will find yourself shaking your head in agreement, laughing at the antics of the Berners, gaining a lot of knowledge about Berners and staying up late at night to finish just one more chapter. It a book that you will treasure forever.

This is a great book for anybody who is considering bringing a Bernese Mountain Dog into their family. There is a variety of information in this book. There is very important health issues discussed & also what this dog must be offered to be happy. Great book by a well respected breeder of this fine breed.
The Best Bernese Book I have found........2005-06-01
A book which is oriented towards showing and breeding.
But knowing what makes a good Bernese can't be bad for any puppy
purchaser either. This the best book I have found about the Bernese breed and I believe I won't need another on the Bernese now.
Book for Hardcore Berner Lovers.......2004-02-22
This is simply one of the best Berner books on the market today for people who want to seriously study this breed.
This book is written as a comprehensive study on Berners, and includes superb information for breeders and exhibitors.
Newbies or people who are not hardcore Berner people may want to avoid this book because they'll probably find a lot of the information overwhelming and unnecessary.
But for people who want a great in-depth perspective on the Bernese Mtn Dog Breed, this book is a MUST HAVE. As a breeder, and as an exhibitor, I use it often as a research resource.
If you're a newer PET Berner owner, try beginning with a book more geared toward newbies in the breed like Julia Crawford's Owner's Guide to a Healthy, Happy Pet.
One of the best on Berners.......2002-12-04
This is one of the best books on Bernese Mountain Dogs. It has terrific information on the history of the breed and physical structure of the dogs. It contains excellent information on health problems which is critical to anyone who owns a Berner.
This is not a coffee-table book so don't expect color photos. This is not a book about how to train a dog; check out clicker training books instead. This is a book about Bernese Mountain Dogs and is for people who are committed to knowing all they can about the breed.
Not what I expected.......2002-03-04
This book has quite a bit of information for those wanting to show their Berner. I am not interested in showing and was quite disappointed. It does not talk a lot about simple pet training or other issues and has only black & white picture. I find the book quite boring and not too practical.

This book is a general guide for all breeds and does have some photos of bernese mountain dogs and it covers all types of health problems, training, and puppy info and other important issues in owning dogs, however it is in general covering all dog breeds and I would recommend "Bernese Mountain Dogs by "Amy Christiansen". However, these are two of the top books that I would give to anyone who has an interest in the Bernese Mountain Dog. I presently own both books.

I heard this was a great book, and I ordered it May 1st . . . Amazon asked me twice over the next 2 months if I still wanted the book because it was taking so long to ship. The order was finally cancelled in July! I would certainly buy this book if I saw it in a bookstore - Amazon's "usually ships in 12 to 14 days" just didn't hold true for me.

Great foundational book for someone looking for useful information on living with a Bernese Mountain Dog. Well written, easy to understand and can be a quick reference.

Just an "Okay book".......2005-03-29
I bought this book in hopes it would offer some good information about Bernese Mountain Dogs. Instead, I felt I could be reading about most any dog breed (generic) with a few breed specific notes included.
There are better books on the market for Bernese lovers than this book. Try Bernd Gunters book, "Bernese Mountain Dog: A Dog Of Destiny" or the book called "The Beautiful Bernese" by Russ&Rogers. If you want a good Bernese puppy book, try Julia Crawford's "BMD: An Owners Guide to a Happy, Healthy Pet".
If you're a hardcore Berner lover, you could add this book to your collection. But if you're looking for really useful breed specific information, look elsewhere.

This is the coffee table book. It's a reasonably quick read and discusses all the Swiss dogs.
Quick Read But Very Basic.......2003-07-26
This book may be appropriate for anyone completely unfamiliar with Mountain Dogs, who also wants a very brief synopsis about each of these wonderful breeds.
To anyone wanting more than that, this book will probably be a disappointment and not worth the money to buy it.
I personally view this book as a waste of money, time and effort. And I generally advise others to avoid this book because there are much better books on the subject matter that are easily available.
I'm still hoping the author of this book will write another edition of this book and expand with a much more comprehensive coverage of each of these breeds. Now that's a book I could be interested in. But this one? I gave it away soon after I bought it.
Great beginning informational reference book on these dogs.......1998-08-22
This book goes into detail about the history of the Mountain Dogs as well as a complete overview of each of the four breeds within this classification. There is not the geneological references that you may find with other books, and I appreciated that fact as someone who just wanted to "get to know the breed" a bit better. The referece delineates the four breeds and compares each. It can be difficult to find information about the three lesser known Mountain Dogs, so for those looking for information about the Appenzeller, this is a great start.
Included, also, is some basic puppy rearing information, including tips on house training, grooming, basic health and breeding.
If you are interested in learning more about these teriffic dogs, but dont want to spent a fortune on a coffee table book, this is a great purchase!

Nose to Nose is a reflection of how one beautiful, charismatic Bernese Mountain Dog named Moritz shows a capacity to comfort and distract from human suffering.
The book chronicles author Schieber's trips with Moritz to visit hospital patients in Missoula, Montana. Patients feel instant rapport with the huge friendly dog and come to life during Moritz's visits. A woman paralyzed on her left side spontaneously hugs Moritz with her left arm. The dog plants his paws on the bed of a moaning three-year-old in a cast and touches noses with the child, who breaks into giggles.
Thank goodness, Author Schieber doesn't attribute miracle healing to Moritz. But the dog's simple presence provides distraction from illness and brightens the spirit.
Nose to Nose is an easy read. I finished it in one sitting. For its deceptively simple style, the book offers profound insight. The story is moving without being sentimental. A must for anyone who appreciates the powerful bond between dog and human.
Heart Warming.......2002-12-19
This is truly a wonderful and moving book. It made me laugh and cry. If you are a dog owner and lover, you will love this book and relate to it. If you don't own a dog, you will want to adopt one after you read this book. This book, written by Barry Schieber, is written from the heart. I highly recommend this book for people of all ages.
a beautiful, subtle, and deeply touching book........2002-11-23
Nose to Nose is a slim volume but within its pages lies a wealth of insight on the human condition and what it takes to understand and appreciate the extraordinary beauty and meaning in what seem to be mundane events. Schieber does not beat you over the head with his observations, rather he lays them gently in front of you, much as his dog Moritz gently lays his head on a childs leg, apparently doing nothing but nevertheless bringing an obviously healing energy with him. Schieber doesn't even ask that you take up his offerings, he just puts them there and leaves it totally up to you. Perhaps it's his Buddhist background at work (he was once Dean of Nyingma Institute in Berkeley, the teaching arm of Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche, one of the first Tibetan Lamas to come to the U.S.), but whatever it is, he succeeds in permeating his book with the same gently penetrating energy that seems to emanate from his pal Moritz. In his End Note, Schieber makes clear the subtlety of Moritz's healing presence and the power of his being. Listing briefly a few of the kinds of experiences he has with Moritz and following each of them with the words "nothing much, " Schieber adds this: "Before long, I am overwhelmed with gratitude to be once again reunited so intimately with life. Thank you, Moritz." And so this book, that also has the ability to reunite us with life, with the incredible beauty of the mundane that slips so quickly by as we look for something more important, more meaningful, more gratifying. Yes, Thank you Moritz, and thank you Barry Schieber for such a peaceful and gentle reminder of how much we miss as we wander often so blindly through this wonderful life. Nose to Nose is the kind of book that you either "get" or you don't, but believe me, its well worth taking the chance.
great dog, so so book.......2002-10-28
As an advertisement for the bernese breed, this is great. As a book, it is very superficial. I too have bernese as therapy dogs and have been doing it for years. Mr. Schrieber needs to do more than 12 visits to really get into it. Also, he needs to delve deeper into his feelings. I think it is wonderful that he will travel such a long way to do this work, it is very important work. A little more work on the book would have been good.

Extremely specific to the Bernese Mountain Dog, I will recommend this book to ALL Berner owners, breeders, and pet lovers. Explains everything and anything you would like to know about the Berner Breed from puppy to adults and also health, dental, travel as well as what to expect from the Berner.
Well detailed, and excellent photo's.

Cookie Cutter Book - NOT one I recommend.......2005-03-29
I bought this book in the hope that it could help a pet Bernese puppy buyer with good information.
When reading this book, I felt as if the writer just 'filled in the blanks' of some generic puppy buyer information. This book did not deliver anything I'd hoped for. I consider this book to be a waste of my money and time investment.
I feel there is a much better pet puppy buyer book on the market by Julia Crawford (a longtime Bernese breeder and prior BMDCA President) and the cost is about the same. This better book is called "Bernese Mountain Dog: An Owners Guide to a Happy, Healthy Pet".
I was very disappointed in this book by Amy Christensen. And I hope she'll try again and do a better job next time.

Comprehensive book w/Great Photos and Information.......2004-02-22
This book has lovely photos and very detailed information about the Bernese Mtn Dog breed.
Newbie Pet Owners will be impressed by the information and photos, but may find about 1/2 of the book to be relatively useless for them.
However, this book should be incredibly useful to serious Berner people wanting a comprehensive study on Berners in the USA, along with top quality breeding information and study.
The sections on USA Berners, breeding and showing information is incredibly nice to have to study and as a ready reference.
This is a wonderful, lovely and very well written book that every Hardcore Berner person should have!

I had a great Berner as a companion for 10.5 years before she died. This book is a wonderful tribute to the breed with a detailed history of the breed in this country. It will need to be updated to remain current with activities in the breed, especially genetic testing that is ongoing, but is does a great service to pet owner and breeder with its great descriptions of the standard and discussions of other pertinent matters for breeders, owners, and admirers.

Wonderful Book - A MUST HAVE!!.......2007-07-30
Jules the Lighthouse Dog is an excellent book. Filled with many colorful and artistic illustrations, the book follows Jules, a Bernese Mountain Dog, as he seeks out what his talent in life is. In the end, Jules finds his talent and uses it to benefit others and for good.
This book would make an excellent teaching tool for children who are learning about good deeds, talents, patience, and giving. Adults will appreciate the powerful message within the book - everyone has a talent, they just need to reach inside of themselves and find it!

I bought this book months before it became available on Amazon, on the recommendation of a good friend. My children are now a little too old to appreciate it, but I hope will read it to their own children. I mostly bought it for myself, and Jules has not disappointed. It's written in a light hearted but poignant way, is beautifully illustrated, and filled with love and wisdom. For toddlers through the elementary grades, and for dog lovers of any age.

We bought this book for our 6-yr old son. Not only does he read it, but so do our 11 and 14-yr old children. It is an outstanding book with a superb message for children and adults. It is well written and the author does a good job keeping the readers captivated. The illustrations are fantastic. We hope there will be future books about Jules' adventures in the Coast Guard.

We recently added Jules the Lighthouse Dog to our library's collection, and it is a very popular book! The illustrations are great, and the story is engaging. Since we are located in Michigan near a lighthouse, and since dogs are popular with nearly everyone, this book has been a hit. We hope there will be more books from this author to follow.
