good book of cat patterns.......2007-09-28
This is a great book for cat lovers if you are looking for whimsical patterns not realistic patterns. I especially like the tesselation patterns.
I love quilts. I love cats. But this is a coffee table quilting design book........2006-02-13
I'm sure that you have a few cookbooks in your collection that you enjoy, but for some reason you never do get around to cooking from them. Maybe the ingredients are hard to get, or you have a simpler recipe in another cookbook. There's nothing wrong with those cookbooks; they're fun, pretty, inspirational. It's just a reading-cookbook rather than a regular instruction book.
To my surprise, that's how I feel about Cat's Meow: Purr-fect Quilts for Cat Lovers. As a devoted cat person, and an enthusiastic (if not anywhere near expert) quilter, I had hoped to find several quilts that would let me indulge in more than one of my passions. However, every time I flip through the pages of this book... well, I end up cooking something else for dinner, so to speak.
I'm not completely sure why; perhaps it's because the designs expect you to use a lot of scraps (I'm not a scrap quilter), or they're just an eensy bit too cutesy. It might also be that, to my mild surprise, none of the designs are suited to use all the kitty fabrics that I've been collecting. Probably, the main reason that I haven't felt compelled to use any of these designs is that the instructions aren't completely clear; it doesn't give me a sense of confidence that this will come together sensibly.
I don't dislike the book; it deserves its 4 stars, and I've no intention of giving it away. On the other hand, I'm not worrying that I'll wear out the book's binding.
great ideas.......2005-09-05
Clear instructions and great ideas. I used the idea of matching cats and spools, but changed it to dogs and bones.
Great book for quilters who love cats!.......2002-11-19
This book is SO CUTE! Even if you don't make a quilt from it, it makes you feel good just looking through it. The colors are happy and the patterns aren't hard. Good instructions and designs and inspiration from Janet Kime! It's one of my top five favorite quilt books--I love it!
cats, cats, cats.......2000-12-19
this is the best book for the cat lover. I even found a pattern inside for dogs. My mother and I worked on these projects together. we have created numerous pillows, and wall hangings useing this book.

Whether you like cats or not this benchmark book will no doubt be a favorite for years to come. For the first time you will find a collection of larger wall size to bed patterns in one book. All with full size patterns on two pull out inserts. Each of the ten patterns has a corresponding miniature size pattern (which can be easily enlarged) showing multiple color adaptations and each has a coordinating pillow size block. The finished designs are shown illustrated and photographed.
A portion of the sale of this book goes to the Hawaii Humane Society to help lost or unwanted cats and kittens find a loving home.

applique in your spare time.......2007-09-26
This hawaiian quilt applique book provides pictures and patterns for making interesting, nature oriented hawaiian quilts. You can adapt the patterns to basic applique, make different size quilts and use the motifs for specialized projects. Don't be surprised, there are few pictures of cats. I can't wait to make a few myself.
Cats Rule!.......2007-08-23
This is another wonderful book by Elizabeth Root with excellent Hawaiian quilt patterns. The designs can be made in any size from pillow to large wall size with enlarging. The cats are not part of the patterns but fabric photos or applique of cats on top of the Hawaiian designs would be really special.
Also look at her books on Menehune(little designs) and Patchwork Pillows.

Book Description
It is a day in June, and the old woman is sitting on her porch with her cat. She has fallen asleep and is dreaming of her man, who was lost at sea. When she wakes up, the old woman is smiling. She goes to the quilt she is making and cuts new pieces of cloth. She is sewing her dream into the design. As the season turns and the moon waxes and wanes, the quilt grows beneath the old woman's needle, recording life as it flows around her. When at last the quilt is complete, she sleeps and finally joins her man in his boat sailing past the moon.
Customer Reviews:
Reads like a Hand Stitched Quilt Made With Love!.......2007-09-20
I just received this book and it is already becoming a favorite of mine as well as my 3 year old daughter. The story reads beautifully and delicate, like an enchanting poem. It stirs all the senses, and the gorgeous illustrations bring it all together in a warm, cozy feeling. I'd call this a "home cooked" book. It truly feels like we own a little piece of magic in this book. A great bedtime read.
-----A nostalgic and unforgettable story-----.......2007-07-06
THE MOON QUILT by Sunny Warner is enchanting! It's the story about the last few months in the life of an older lady. In the story she is referred to as the "old woman."
Her days are spent sitting with her cat and dreaming. When she's awake the cat sleeps and when the old lady sleeps the cat is awake! The lady is dreaming of her old man who was lost at sea. In her dreams he is crossing from his boat to a rainbow which reaches to the moon. She decides to sew her dream into a lovely quilt. The old woman never forgets her daily chores and also works in the garden and plants pumpkins. Her evenings are spent working on her quilt. Her quilt is becoming a story and she sews a picture of herself and her cat onto the fabric.
When Halloween comes she makes delicious pumpkin pies for children who live nearby. The children arrive dressed in costumes and have a fun evening carving pumpkins and eating pie! The old lady sews the entire Halloween experience with the children into the quilt.
One evening as winter approaches the old woman and her cat sit outside watching the moon and they both fall sleep. The last illustration shows where they went.
The story is told simply and the book has many colorful pictures. This book is proof that good and meaningful stories are being written for young children
Bemused..........2001-12-10
This is a beautiful book, with many of the illustrations looking like they are fashioned from snippets of cloth, as a quilt top would be. The story is gentle and cheerful. Here is the old woman working in her garden, and here she is entertaining a group of happy youngsters at Hallowe'en. Clearly she has a full and fulfilling life. And then in the next-to-the-last frame, after she has added her cat and herself to the quilt, they sit down together under the moonlight and...die??? I guess i'm used to authors who clobber you over the head with the punchline. I had to go back and read the story again to make sure i'd reached the right conclusion. Then i had to go look at some reviews of the book to see if other reviewers reached the same conclusion. I suppose that this book can be used to show children that death is a gentle thing when it comes to those who have lived a long and useful life...except that the ending really startled and upset me. I guess i didn't see it coming, and i didn't want the story to turn out that way. I would only recommend reading this book to children if you are prepared to have a potentially upsetting discussion about death and dying.
A warm title of an old woman's activities.......2001-07-06
An old woman is sitting on her porch with her cat and is dreaming of her husband, lost at sea. Her dreams lead to new ideas for the quilt she is making, and her life takes on new purpose and reflection as she stitches in the changes in this warm title of an old woman's activities.
A senstive look at the journey of life for children.......2001-05-23
This book full of wonderful illustrations, provides a senstive look at the journey of a woman's life for children and adults alike. It takes the reader through a colorful adventure through the eyes of an old women and her cat. The author's exquisite drawings enhance the warm feeling the book gives the reader. A must read for any age.

Customer Reviews:
A perfect paper piecing book for cat and dog lovers :).......2003-10-24
This book has detailed colored pictures of all projects, and patterns that INCLUDE the seam allowance (my 2 most important factors in buying a paper piecing book).
Each project lists all the pertinent information you might require (i.e. quilt size, block size, fabric requirements, fabric cutting sizes). There are lots of tips and how-to's throughout the book, and "personalization" ideas are included for a number of the projects. The projects themselves are absolutely adorable.
Only one project in the book looked like it might be on the difficult side (Hanging BasKats) - the rest looked like they would be doable by most people with a little bit of sewing experience.
The color project pictures are all at the front, separate from the pattern/instruction pages, so it's sometimes necessary to go to the front of the book when working. Each project does clearly state where the colored photo is, but it would have been nice to have the color project photo WITH the project.
I certainly look forward to buying more books from this author and fellow cat lover :).
Must for a Pet Lover.......2003-02-08
This is a must for any cat or dog lover. I don't usually paper piece but I couldn't resist some of these designs for my animal loving family. 2 Cats on the fence sharing the moonlight made a great anniversary gift for my parents - was easy to do and turned out perfectly. The dachshunds are next on my list for my neice.
Whimsical but not "cutesy"!.......1999-07-02
I loved the way Janet Klime came up with cat quilts that are not cutesy or countrified, but rather some that are funky and even, in the case of the Siamese, sophisticated. The dog designs are great, too, but some of them do lean a little to the cute side. There are lots of different styles to choose from, so everyone is bound to find something that they like in this book. The designs are simple, unlike some paper pieced patterns with 33 pieces to a block. I completed a two-cat design called "tryst" (two cats with entwined tails) in about two hours with NO ripping out! I know that I will actually USE this book many times over, rather than just keeping it on my quilt book shelf. Have already purchased the fabric for the gorgeous Siamese!
Quick, easy, whimsical designs!.......1999-01-09
This book is one of the better ones that I own and will definitely be one of my 'favorites'. The designs have a lot of eye appeal and are refreshing. The patterns are easy to trace and because of its simplicity, very easy to enlarge or decrease in size. Because of this, customizing your project is a breeze. I just received it and have 'shared' it (but haven't let it out of my sight yet. :-) ) with my sister and couple of friends. They too have gotten excited over the fun, whimsical designs. Get the book...you won't be disappointed! Am look'g fwd to purchasing more books by Janet Kime in the near future. Aloha!

Only thing I ever made out of this was an appliqued sweatshirt--fuzzy side out.
Easy. It looked good after I finished. I wore it for years.
Fortunately it didn't look anything like her samples.
And that is why I only gave it 4 stars. I loved her cats, I hated her fabric choices.
Not the first time this has happened. And that's better than the other way around, where the pictures are dazzling, but not really usable.

Book Description
Cat lovers, quilt collectors, and crafts enthusiasts alike will enjoy this delightful book devoted to images of fascinating felines adorning beautifully made quilts dating from 1840 to the mid-20th century.
Sandi Fox discusses the changing styles and techniques of quiltmaking over the past 100 years, identifying the origins of various designs. Cats and kittens are shown sitting erect, moving among boughs of berries, tumbling on a table with a ball of yarn, or peeping from a basket. Each beautifully photographed quilt is paired with poetry or prose drawn from works by Emily Dickinson, T. S. Eliot, W. B. Yeats, Mark Twain, Rudyard Kipling, Beatrix Potter, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and other wonderful writers-adding further appeal to a charming gift book.
SANDI FOX, a quiltmaker and quilt scholar, has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the California Arts Council. She is former curator of quilts at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and has authored numerous books and exhibition catalogues. Her own work is in many private and corporate collections. She lives in Los Angeles.
60 illustrations, 51 in full color, 6 x 7"
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful creativity on show.......2002-06-01
Having decided from the beginning that each quilt should have a cat on it somewhere, I ordered this book to see examples of how people in the past have represented cats on quilts. The liveliness of representation of cats is quite amazing, with many of the quilts managing to capture the way a cat looks and behaves - no mean feat, you only have to look at available cat fabrics to see how rare this is.
This is a small book, with each page containing detail from one quilt and I'd recommend it strongly to anyone interested in seeing in close-up detail how cats have been pictured on old quilts. I think it's a wonderful book.
Smart, funny & beautiful.......2001-06-26
This is a FANTASTIC book. The quilts that the author chose to include are unique, one-of-a-kind pieces and often display a wonderful sense of humor. (Take, for instance, the quilt which features blocks with the head and front paws of a kitty, and the disappearing hind end of a mouse escaping from the kitty.) The excerpts from different writings about cats are understated and thoughtful, and the author provides a great mini-history of textiles in America. This book moved me into high gear in my own quilting and is an ongoing source of keen pleasure. If you don't quilt, if you just like cats, you'll love the book because of its folk-art depictions of cats; if you like cats AND quilting, this book will make you feel like someone let you loose in the catnip patch.
For lovers of both cats and quilts.......2000-10-11
This sweet book would make a nice gift - it is full of whimsical and unusual examples of cat motifs on American country quilts. Many cat-related books are a bit saccharine for my taste but this is a refreshing and delightful change of pace

Inspiring.......2006-04-03
Ms. Rauen's deeply felt ideas about creativity are inspiring. Her warmth and romance with art and life are evident. I especially enjoyed her thoughts on getting rid of negativity, and "filling up". The well organized projects are a lot of fun. I look forward to more of her titles.
Fresh, creative and user-friendly instructions!.......2005-07-09
I have both this book and "Cats in Hats" book and they are both invaluable resources for painting on wood, fabric, umbrellas, tile, as well as quilting, free-motion machine embroidery...well, you get the picture! A variety of approaches to fundamentally adorable designs add to the value of this book.
Clear and helpful directions and a sense of relaxed playfulness make this book a welcome addition to my art room library.

Comments from the author.......2003-06-12
"Sassy Cats" was not intended to be just a quilt book. The title is "Sassy Cats - Purrfect Crafts Projects". It has 15 projects for everything from silk painting, painting on wood, canvas, glass, and ceramics to applique, quilting, and free motion embroidery. As the author, I have been very pleased with the response and the feedback. In the book, I recommend that people play around with the designs, enlarging and reducing them for their specific project ideas. One fan even hooked one of the designs as a wool purse. Most of the designs lend themselves very well to be used as applique projects for quilting. Many of the painted projects were created in applique for HGTV's "Simply Quilts" television show with Alex Anderson. I'm sorry that the reviewer Lamkay thought it was just a quilt book. I do feel that based on her misunderstanding, her review is unfair and damaging to me. Thank you. Sheila Rauen
Disappointing!.......2002-05-14
I expected a quilt book and received a paint on silk book. If you like to paint on silk, buy it. If you expect patterns for quilting, forget it!
Sassy Cats.......2001-02-01
Anyone who crafts and loves cats will love this book! I first saw the author on Carol Duvall and knew that I had to try what she was demonstrating that day - a painted cat looking in a fishbowl. And when I found out she had written this book, I immediately went looking for it. You will NOT be disappointed. All of her projects have easy to follow instructions and they can also be used for any medium you want to try, be it painting, quilting, applique, etc. Her cat pictures are darling and my two (Mad Max and Maisie) already have their requests in to me! The only problem you'll have is trying to decide which one to do first!

A great book from my childhood !.......2004-01-16
I absolutely love this book. I received a copy of my own for my 4th birthday in 1981. I recently found it in my hope chest and read it to my boys. They loved it and had me read it over and over again. The story is about Tabby's journey to bring her beloved patchwork quilt back home after it has been thrown away.
Very few books stick with us for so many years and this was one of them.
This book should not be out of print!!!.......1999-06-15
Even if the illustrations weren't so gloriously detailed and cozy, this book would win you over with its satisfying story. The patchwork cat is drawn so lovingly that she almost shimmers from the page. Her adventure, which is just scary enough, and her rescue, which will make everyone cheer, are appealingly told from a kitty point of view. My two sons and I rank this as one of our very favorite books for younger children. Don't miss Bayley's illustrations in the truly wonderful story by Antonia Barber, The Mousehole Cat.
Great Childrens book!!.......1999-05-28
I really hope it gets put back into print!
Tabby will touch your soul.......1997-07-16
Tabby loves her quilt and goes to great lengths to save it. She loves her home, too, and faces danger to return there. And you will love Tabby. The story is riveting, the artwork unforgettable. Tabbys' love will stay in your heart always! Please try to find it. You'll cherish it for life
