This was one of the few decent references I used in preparing my books, 8 Weeks to a Healthy Dog, The Allergy Solution for Dogs, and the award-winning The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats. The book is well written and easy to understand, yet informative for owners who would like to explore natural care for their pets.

We are very new to the holistic care for pets ... and we were looking to find a good book that would introduce us to this more natural method of looking after our dogs ...
Ms. Puotinen's book is everything that we could have asked for ... her first few chapters takes the beginner gently through the methods, means, whys and wherefore of holistic care. Her writing is clear, concise and sure ...
The rest of the book is (to our mind) quite detailed, with lots of specifics ... and we suspect will cater even for the more experienced.
The book takes the reader from feeding raw food & supplements, to aromatherapy & homeopathy, and even guides the reader through the more esoteric art of flower therapy and massage for pets. There is a wonderful chapter on common ailments and possible natural remedies.
The author draws from numerous sources of information & reference (all carefully indexed and referenced) and she reproduces conversations & interviews with other practitioners of the art (including vets). To beginners such as us, this is quite essential ... and we found great comfort, to learn that holistic care is not only an ancient art but is still actively practised today (and gaining much ground), by even those with medical and professional qualifications.

Because many natural remedies are ancestors to our modern pharmacopia, care must be taken with all drugs you give your pet. Please use these books carefully and under the supervision of your veterinarian. There is a reason why we are required to attend four years of post-undergraduate medical school in order to prescribe drugs and make medical decisions. All animals are complex organisms who vary widely among species and individuals. Drugs and herbal remedies that may be safe and effective in humans can kill cats and dogs. These species variations are not well understood, especially with regards to herbal medications. For example, onions can be deadly to cats, as can Tylenol (a drug that we feel is safe even for human children). Please don't leave your common sense at the (e)bookstore door. Saving money on veterinary care by using a book may cost you the life of your pet.

This is an excellent book. It provided me with the information that I needed to save the lives of some puppies that were malnourished and dehydrated at 3 weeks of age due to the loss of thier mom. I would have lost the litter with out this book. I have since bought a goat....

There are several books along the same lines, but this highly comprehensive and up-to-date holistic health encyclopedia for pets is the best. 500+ pages of info on feeding a raw diet, supplements, aromatherapy, herbal medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture, flower essences, hands-on therapies such as acupressure and massage, holistic first aid strategies, cancer treatments, the vaccination controversy, interviews with several holistic vets, and an A-Z guide to ailments and their natural remedies. I just love cats. If it weren't for this book I wouldn't of found any of our kittens' breeds. This lists down probably every breed of cat there is, except wild and extinct cats that is. I would say this is the best cat encyclopedia I've read. I would recomend this book to any cat breeder out there.

I found the section on breeds to be informative with nice pictures. The section on care and illness was severely lacking: on one page, the text just ended with no punctuation and did not continue to the next page. To find out how to take a dog's temperature was very clear, but I had to search the index to find out what that temp should be. There were instances that in case of an illness or infection, no real guides as to what the owner could do until the dog could see a vet. Just not very helpful to me at all.
The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Dogs 2004.......2005-01-11
We enjoyed your book and found it had excellent graphics, however there were a few concerns. On pg 83, it states when suffering from heat exhaustion to "bath the dog with cold water and especially drench its head" if one were to do this it would send the animal into an immediate state of cardiac arrest in shock, a condition that no owner is equiped to deal with. I think that any veterinarian would agree, the best course of action would be to slowly cool the animal with tepid water and seek immediate emergency help. As well there is a section stating how much dogs like to eat chocolate but there is no mention to the fact of it being extremely toxic. On the plus side it is nice to see that you recommended that any injured dog should be muzzled as it may bite (something that the owner may not know).

I got this book last weekend. I can't say I have read it cover to cover, but I have taken a good look at it.
I like it!! ...I wont say the information inside it is very precise, especially concerning breed temperament, but the pictures are wonderful and give an excellent idea of what the dog will look like in real life.
It is not a heavy book, and the language is very easy to read, so I also think its a good option for kids who are beyond the picture books and want a bit more information... without over saturating them!!
CAREFUL - DANGEROUS INFO.......2003-09-03
Another book by the same writer "The essential Dog Book" has under "Feeding Requirements" the following statement. "Very nearly every dog loves chocolate". While true it doesn't go on to say that chocolate is DANGEROUS for dogs. I just called my vet and confirmed it. NEVER feed chocolate to your dog or cat no matter how much they like it. I cannot recomend any book by a writer that has such a dangerous error in it. It makes me wonder how well they researched and checked the rest of it. I don't know if this book also has this error in it.

This book has been a TREMENDOUS help to not only me but my family as well. Whenever anyone of us as a problem with either our own dogs or the dogs next door we open the book and there is the solution! It is easy to read and clearly gives the suggestions and why they will work. ...and they do! Ms Carlson has also been helpful with her phone consultations. I don't know how anyone with a dog manages without this book.
Must Have for Training........2003-02-27
I was very pleased with this purchase. The information is terrifically organized so that you can easily find it, and I wasn't able to find one problem I have encountered with my two new pups that was not covered in this book.
What I most liked about this book is that it not only explains the problem, but why the dog is doing it in the first place. This has helped me to put their training in perspective and see what they are trying to do, or think they are doing. It just helps me be a better 'alpha dog' I feel.
I can easily recommend this book to anyone with a dog or with a notion of getting a dog. This will not be money wasted.

If you're getting a puppy or have a young dog who's causing problems, forget all the other dog training books you're thinking of buying. If you buy Jeanne Carlson's book you won't need any others.
In addition to buying her book & loving it, Jeanne personally trained our 2 yr. old yellow lab, Gede. Thanks to Jeanne's miraculous touch & training, Gede has grown up to be an almost perfect dog: mild tempered, calm, loving, etc.
Jeanne's book lays out every significant problem area clearly, consisely; and gives you easy to follow directions for how to correct them. She also points out the reasons for the problems & the reasons why the solutions will work in terms of your dog's psychology.
It may sound a bit silly, but Jeanne has learned to see the world through a dog's eyes & has profound empathy for the species. You can't go wrong w. Jeanne!

Believes that once a dog has learned the correct command and knowingly disobeys, a verbal "no" is appropriate. Well indexed and cross referenced. 65% of the book is organized into specific problems, why your dog is doing it, what you should do or say, why the correction works and how to prevent the situation. Training methods recommend use of leash, collar, spay bottles, rattles, and lots of personal positive reinforcement techniques. A very good, stick to the facts, basic training book.

We have several little cat friends around the home and this is a great "general reference" on cat care. It is easy to read and well indexed with loads of information on what to do to keep your cat happy and healthy. For "cat first aid and emergency care", however, I would recommend an additional book sold on Amazon, "Help! The Quick Guide to First Aid for Your Cat." By Michelle Bamberger (DVM). She really outlines, with excellent drawings, what to do in a life or death emergency situation with your cat. With both of these books, from Amazon, you'll have an excellent library on cat health and emergency care.

I want to go to University and become a vet, but until then I am using this excellent book as a guide! So far it's helped me to save my kitten from LUTD (Lower Urinary Tract Disease) which can be fatal if not caught. The pictures and sympton charts are absolutely phenominal, I don't know what I would do without this book. I've learned so much, I consider this book my cat Bible! If you have a cat or are interested in animal care, you must have this book.

This was purchased for a young elementary school girl who loves horses. The description did not say that there are photos/drawings of horses reproducing. This made things a bit difficult for her parents who were forced into a discussion they hadn't planned on. I did not know about this from the description.
The rest of the book had some great photos and information about horses.

The first part of the book contains a list of horse and pony breeds which are described quite comprehensively. The other parts I found a little incomplete and sketchy. The horse care basics in this book are messy, some horse sport descriptions are poor. The photos aren't of highest quality and the index contains some inaccuracies.

I borrowed this book from a friend and was so pleased with it-it has hundreds of full-color photos and such crystal-clear information-that I went out and bought my own copy. This book includes rare chapters on the Western and harnessed disciplines (among a few well-written others)and covers the basic breeds and has a detailed horse care section. The price is well worth it.

This is an awesome book filled with LOTS of pictures and information. They have the pictures and information on each horses breeds, and gives information on shoeing a horse, western & English saddles and much, much more. A book that can definately grow with your child's love of horses as they grow. One of the best horse books I've seen.

This book is ideal for horse crazed kids as well as adults. Nicely bound, nicely arranged, with lots of photos and descriptive language. Is this the encylopedia for horsing? No. But it is an enjoyable book that delivers what it promised.
