A good book describing the opponents the fighting dogs faced and how they were expected to fight them. However there is little information on the breeds themselves. Excellent art work is displayed on nearly every page,and the information is reliable. I would recommend it to people interested in there dogs heritage as a fighter. I gave it 4 stars because I feel it could have been longer. Full of details it is a good book for any fighting dog owner. You'll get a complete understanding where your dog came from.

I am a freash Staff owner i Norway, and got a hole new respekt for this type of dog. How can you not when you read about all the awfull thigs man has done to this amimal, and still it loves us so much.The book also pays a tribut to the war dogs which to few of us know about.The book also tells the reason for animal fights and the social situation. Thank you for this great book!

Capitalizing on the brutality, violence, and abuse of the dog fighting world for financial gain is ghastly. Selling this material supports and perpetuates this horrible industry and sends the wrong message about our society. Until Amazon stops distributing this and other dog and cockfighting materials, I cannot in good conscience give them my business, and I will urge friends and family to do the same.

Book-banning hs been shown to an unproductive activity. Especially since in this case the book under review is not a "how-to" book, but instead a history book. If we ban all the history books on the inhumanity of war, communism, nazism, etc. and all the other horrific aspects of life we will only make ourselves more ignorant and susceptible to error than we are already.

Don't waste your time trying to ban books, do what you can to ban veal and bring about the most humane slaughter conditions possible. Work to stop the import of animal products from countries that don't kill animals in the most humane possible way. Demand transparency from the meat industry.

Dear Mr Bezos,
I am sure that you yourself do not advocate dog
fighting and animal cruelty and that you do not want that to be
the image that Amazon is known for. Sadly though you are
endorsing this actjust by selling these products that promote a
violent and debased culture.

Maybe you are not familiar with its nature and have not heard of
how they force the animals to breed with "r**e stands" and how
they abuse the animals to make them "tough fighters" then kill
them when they lose. Maybe Amazon doesnt mind these practices or
even enjoys them.

Sice I have no way of knowing I will be buying my products from
your competitors from now on until you stop selling or offering
products that are solely devoted to illegal or violent
activities.

A book ahead of it's time.......2000-10-09

If you can find a copy of this fine little book, get it! It is amazing how so many of the things written in this book about how the media and some of the public views the APBT back in 1936 is not much different than now. There are stories by other big dog men of the day also in this book. Brief info on dog selection, breeding, and conditioning are also covered. There are some interesting ads from the era at the back of the book. I would very much like to see a reprint of this book done, I would buy another copy!!!

You will get exactly what you pay for in this book: a good education in the history of fighting dogs. From Lion Baiting to Ratting this book covers it all and will give you an understanding of the forces that shaped the grand fighting breeds we have today, like the noble American Pit Bull Terrier.

Factually this book is highly enlightening and enjoyable to read.I was riveted at the first person narratives and inside jokes of the dog pits.My only complaint is that Mike loses track of himself towards the last three chapters and leaves the reader hanging for more at the end.I would love to see more books by this author and maybe a revised version of this book with a better conclusion.

The best book on game dog breeds I have yet to read. The author's painstaking, thorough research into his subject matter pays off in a book that gives the reader all that they could ask for pertaining to fighting dogs, their origins, and history. An added bonus for me with this publication was that I didn't have to sift through any passive/aggressive ego-stroking, and/or personal politcal flavorings from the author that taint the digestion of information in other books of similar subject matter.(I.E. c. semencic)

Telling you like it was back in the "good" old days. I've read a lot of books on the pitbull terrier and this is by far the best one. It has tons of old pictures and prints that I've never seen before. It is a complete history with accounts of bull~baiting, bear~baiting, lion~baiting, and of course dog~fighting. He doesn't sugarcoat anything, sometimes the dogs were simply over~matched and he tells it. A must have for the pitbull historian, I highly reccomend it.

Primary Source on Dog-Fighting History.......2007-07-22

The book was originally published in 1935 as an infomercial for one man's fighting dogs with emphasis on disparaging his competitors. I read it as background for a book I am writing, and it was helpful for that purpose.

The book does effectively dispel the myth that dog fighting used to be a sport of respectable gentlemen conducted at wholesome family cook outs; the first hand accounts are basements and barns, hiding from the police, with people carrying guns and using them. It was interesting to note that many of the best dogs between 1900 and 1930 were English bull terriers or Boston Terrier crosses, not pits; and that the first fight Armitage ever saw was a Colby dog that quit against a backyard mix.

A look to the past........2007-03-03

This book is a collectors item.For it's fotos of some great old time Pit Fighting Dogs.On the other hand the story's told on it lack a bit of flavor.The thing that got to me is that even do this book is form the early 1900's.Some times it felt like it was wright'en on the past decade.In all I realy recomend this,but only to the people how are willing to learn the truth of this great breed.

Enjoyable reading about the ancenstry of a remarkable breed, the American Pit Bull Terrier. Historical photos (many are poor quaility) of world renowned fighting dogs of their day. Historical accounts of matches from the by-gone days of gentlemen matching game dogs.
Using information acquired in this book, I was able to trace my dog's ancestry back to 1845.
A necessary addition to the library of any American Pit Bull Terrier lover who understands the breed's heritage.

While I enjoy reading even the darker side of one of my favorite breeds, this book did nothing for me. There is so much more to be expected from these dogs but not by people like this tending to their futures.

I am usually a big shopper of Amazon; especially at Christmas. I also buy stock during the 4th quarter-that all changes after seeing this horrible book for sale. SHAME ON AMAZON for promoting animal abuse by selling this disgusting book.

What a cruel and inhumane subject for a book. I hope people do not buy such tragic information. Do they want their children to read this book to learn how to torture dogs? Would they like their son or daughter to grow up to run dog-fighting rings? Why don't they do something positive with their lives, instead of this evil "sport"? Why not help children or animals in need. What did a dog ever do to deserve this? These people have something missing in their souls.

Informative viewing point.......2007-08-18

Like many guides from the earlier eras [on household, gardening, health,
manners] this one shows where our society has been, how it's changed, and
how surprisingly long-standing are some concerns. This book, along with one
I bought on the duty of servants, a Dreiser novel, something on the trials
of Wilde, and an Anonymous novel of sex, vividly reveal how Victorian
sentiment, cloying to me and even morbid, strove to improve sensibilities
even while it diminished the lives of all classes of people and especially
children, not just pit dogs.

The mythos implied about the fighters in praise that attributes human
traits takes for granted their fortune at being exploited under such
expertise. Its servicable writing is confident and detailed, but I can't
tell if it's useful today because I don't know animal husbandry. What is
evident in both the book and some reviews here that admit not reading the
book, is a seemingly contagious emotional ecstasy that, absent thought of
the book's contents, might stem from the same precisely out-of-tune sense
responsible for inspiriting The Dog Pit. This irony arises, now as then,
in an idyllic view of nature that denies of nature whatever contradicts
the pre-conceived moral and cultural ideal.

Just so The Dog Pit chills me a little, with its advising intelligence
every bit as credible as one suggesting Ritalin to reign in unruly boys.
Perhaps this portends how ignorant the next century will deem our extreme
tantrums over abuse of living creatures that oddly overlook the hideous
things done to abused children, literally every minute of each 24 hours,
and with lifelong detriment to society. In its way, this first-hand
history artifact fosters assessment more humane than can an inflamed,
rather than informed, crusade.

The book description says it all.. i.e. how to effectively submit your dog to torture and heal its wounds so you can throw it back into the pit... They say you can gauge the civility of a country by its treatment of animals.... Those who experience pleasure by watching, (and pro-actively training) animals to tear themselves apart are sick. This book is a "hate crime" book - for Amazon to shield "Fighting Dogs" underneath free speech is weak - while they disallow other books they claim promote hate crime and violent behavior. Really dumbfounded that Amazon condones this - do they not draw any line? I'll shop elsewhere for my books as I cannot ethically support a company who knowingly condones illegal activity and promotes animal cruelty.
