Book Description

In late-capitalist Western society, cross-ethnic cultural transactions are an inevitable daily routine. Yet, according to acclaimed cultural critic Rey Chow, the notion of ethnicity as it is currently used is theoretically ambivalent, confusing, indeed self-contradictory, straddling as it does an uneasy boundary between a universalist rhetoric of inclusion on the one hand, and actual, lived experiences of violence and intolerance on the other. To drastically reconceptualize ethnicity in the contemporary world, Chow proposes that it be examined in conjunction with Max Weber's famous theory about the Protestant work ethic and capitalism, which holds that secular belief in salvation often collaborates effectively with the interpellation, disciplining, and rewarding of subjects constituted by specific forms of labor. The charged figure that results from such a collaboration, resonant with the economic, psychological, and spiritual implications of the word "protest, " is what she refers to as the protestant ethnic.

Chow explores the vicissitudes of cross-ethnic representational politics in a diverse range of texts across multiple genres, including the writings of Georg Lukacs, Michel Foucault, Max Weber, Jacques Derrida, Fredric Jameson, Etienne Balibar, Charlotte Brontë, Garrett Hongo, John Yau, and Frantz Fanon; the films of Alfred Hitchcock, Marguerite Duras, and Alain Resnais; and the cartoon drawings of Larry Feign. Tracing out hauntingly familiar scenarios from stereotyping and coercive mimeticism to collective narcissistic abjection, the rise of white feminist racial power, and intraethnic ressentiment, Chow articulates a series of interlocking critical dialogues that challenge readers into hitherto unimagined ways of thinking about an urgent topic.

The Protestant Ethnic & The Spirit Of Capitalism by Rey Chow (Andrew W. Mellon Professor of the Humanities at brown University), is a meticulously, scholarly, college-level study of cross-ethnic representational politics in America and recent capitalistic Western cultures. From the coercive practices of keeping races or classes of people "in their place", to the pervasive and enduring social harm of stereotyping, to the conflicted intersection of religious belief and capitalistic self-preservation, The Protestant Ethnic & The Spirit Of Capitalism is an impressively thoughtful and thought-provoking study of fundamental ideas and their evolution in a multi-ethnic nation. Also available in a hardcover edition (0231124201, ...), The Protestant Ethnic & The Spirit Of Capitalism is a seminal and important addition to Ethnic Studies academic reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Book Description

Martin Heidegger once wrote that the world had, in the age of modern science, become a world picture. For Rey Chow, the world has, in the age of atomic bombs, become a world target, to be attacked once it is identified, or so global geopolitics, dominated by the United States since the end of the Second World War, seems repeatedly to confirm. How to articulate the problematics of knowledge production with this aggressive targeting of the world? Chow attempts such an articulation by probing the significance of the chronological proximity of area studies, poststructuralist theory, and comparative literature—fields of inquiry that have each exerted considerable influence but whose mutual implicatedness as postwar U.S. academic phenomena has seldom been theorized. Central to Chow’s discussions is a critique of the predicament of self-referentiality—the compulsive move to interiorize that, in her view, constitutes the collective frenzy of our age—in different contemporary epistemic registers, including the self-consciously avant-garde as well as the militaristic and culturally supremacist. Urging her readers to think beyond the inward-turning focus on EuroAmerica that tends to characterize even the most radical gestures of Western self-deconstruction, Chow envisions much broader intellectual premises for future transcultural work, with reading practices aimed at restoring words and things to their constitutive exteriority.

3 out of 5 stars Provocative Work that is ultimately problematic and contradictory .......2007-05-08

This small book by Rey Chow makes a bold attempt to apply Heidegger's notion of the "age of world picture" to the post-1945 Asia Pacific and questions the still pervasive mode of compartmentalized disciplinarity in East Asian Studies, Minority Studies, etc, in order to elucidate for us a new notion of comparative literature. While such a depiction of her project brings to mind the path already taken by Spivak in the Death of Discipline, her promise to tackle "comp lit" through Asia Pacific, the Atomic Age, and the institutionalization of theory and Asian Studies in the US are both refreshing and provocative.

However, my initial excitement was soon replaced by some disappointment and more question marks. The first chapter that "applies" Heidegger to Asia Pacific and East Asian Studies remains precisely a mere application of the famous essay by Heidegger and does not add much to what the German philosopher has already written. Heidegger in "the Age of World Picture" critiques the productionist metaphysics that leads to an endless creation of "researches" and the production & destruction at once of "world" as such. Therefore, when Chow says Asia Pacific was reduced into a target of both academic research (East Asian Studies in the US) and atomic bombing, she is largely merely retracing the thesis put forth by Heidegger approximately 50 years ago. To apply and retrace important theoretical point made by others is fine. But Rey Chow has a constant tendency to sound as if she is always "advancing" and "going beyond" the points made by others (e.g., "Supplementing Heidegger, we may say that in the age of bombing, the world has also been transformed into ... a target" (31).) But less obvious and perhaps more productive is Heidegger's mysterious claim about "technology's saving power" that makes us see the reverse side of the age of world picture, but she does not at all refer to or think about the possibility of this line of inquiry...

To go through the rest of the book more quickly, the second chapter is a partial vindication of "referentiality" or the persistence of referential meaning in literature and cultural studies. So Chow sets out to critique what she calls European "post-structural theorists." Again, that kind of project is fine. However, if someone wants to offer a credible critique of "post-structuralist theorists" still current in the US academy, one should at least provide a detailed close reading and substantial critique of people like Derrida, Deleuze, Lyotard, Levinas, de Man, Blanchot, Nancy, etc. However, what Rey Chow gives us is a very brief reading of Roland Barthes'_Mythologies_ and Barthes' perhaps naive insistence of a rural woodcutter as an exmaple of someone outside the hegemonice system...For someone as acute and well-read as Rey Chow to set up this kind of straw-person argument is rather disappointing. Can one Barthes book exemplify poststructuralist tendency to reify, essentialize, and thus implicitly denigrate the cultural Other (in the guise of celebrating such otherness)? Perhaps not. Does Chow provide a contrived argument in order to artificially make the entire post-structuralist theory eurocentric? Well, others can decide for themselves.

The last chapter retains the problem of the second chapter. That is, Chow now links what she sees as post-structuralist tendency to "incarcerate" the non-Western other and fetishize "interruptive aesthetics" to Johannes Fabian's argument that ethnography usually sustains itself by denying the "coevalness" between the ethnographer and the so-called native. Even if this argument is valid, I do not see any proof of this in the book.

After a seemingly biting "critique" of post-sturcturalism, Chow's formulation of a new comparative literature works with gestures toward theorists such as Sam Weber and Harutoonian using very Derridean notions of "ghosts," "revenat," and the disjunctive "and." In a very very reductive sense, this book starts with Heidegger and ends with Derrida, with its Chapter 2 vigilantly attacking "poststructuralist theory" as ultimately inward and euro-centric.Why?

Does Chow want to say that "post-structuralist" theory per se is apolotical ultimately but certain diaspotic appropriation of it can still be politically and ethically powerful? If so, she should say so. Overall, the lack of close reading of theorists she criticizes, Chow's own very troubled and often contracitory relationship with "theory," and her constant tendency to sound like she is going beyong others whose points she seems to repeat, make this a very troubled book. This is not to say that the problems it raises are unimportant. But one whould not too quickly disavow one's theoretical background merely because it's "passe" in the US or because its political capacity was attenuated in the literature departments in the US. Perhaps the theoretical legacy Chow incorporates in this book should be acknowledged more generously, productively, and, therefore, more critically in a fair manner.

3 out of 5 stars eh...........2007-01-04

I'm a long-time PHP developer but a relative newcomer to Eclipse (love it).

This is a fair guide to PHPEclipse. I don't think there's anything about PHPEclipse I'd want to know that I couldn't find in this book, particularly about adding debugging and phpdoc, which don't come bundled with PHPEclipse.

On the other hand - for what you pay, this is a really, really short book. If they needed some filler space to justify the cost, more information on Eclipse in general would have come in handy for a noob like me, or some basics on PHP (the book assumes a fairly high level of PHP knowledge, as it goes right in to OOP in its examples). Some of the graphics work and text layout leaves a bit to be desired, which surprised me, as I've had good luck with this publisher.

If I had it to do over again, I probably would have skipped this book and toughed it out, but overall it isn't a bad book and it did help some. If you are a PHP ninja but you don't know anything about PHP in Eclipse (and you have some cash to kill), it isn't a bad pickup. I give it an "eh" rating.

5 out of 5 stars Instructions on How to Install and Use PHPEclipse.......2006-06-21

When you are first learning a new computer language such as PHP, you will want to complete each line of code and each phase of the program by hand and without using any shortcuts. This is the best way to learn. But as we all know, in the real world, we are all pressed for time. Many programmers turn to an IDE (integrated development environment) to keep them organized and to streamline the workflow. This book by Shu-Wai Chow will show you how to install, setup and use PHPEclipse which is a popular open source IDE for PHP programmers.

The author begins with an introduction to IDE's covering their main features and the pros and cons of using them. Following this, is an introduction to PHPEclipse, its history and architecture. Then the fun begins. Chow's tutorial-styled narrative walks you through each step as you install the main software; Apache, PHP, Java, Eclipse and PHPEclipse. I especially liked that he used the free, open source distribution/installation software called XAMPP which automates the installation of Apache, MySQL, PHP and Perl. He covers the installation for Windows, Mac and Linux. At this point you also install Java and PHPEclipse. Finally, he thoroughly discusses the user interface, the views (palettes) and dialog boxes and how you might want to customize these.

Once you have these installed, you begin to work on a real PHP application project which is a database driven website for an animal shelter. You learn how to set up this project's files and folders within PHPEclipse. Then you begin building the PHP code and supporting HTML, JavaScript and CSS files for the website. You also begin to work on the database, program objects and classes. Chow introduces some helpful tools at this point including WTP (Web Tools Platform project), HTML Tidy, Eclipse Tidy and phpDocumentor. I especially liked the phpDocumentor feature that builds the documentation for your application from your source code comments.

Debugging is the next topic and after an introduction to terms and concepts, Chow shows how to install and setup the DBG debugger. With this feature, you can use more sophisticated debugging practices than the basic echo ( ) function we all know so well. Chow walks you through a complete debugging session and discusses common strategies.

The next step is to turn PHPEclipse into a database client by the addition of the Quantum DB plug-in. Chow demonstrates how to use this with a relational database and how to perform common tasks such as writing SQL statements and manipulating tables.

Depending on your projects, you may or may not feel that you need the help of version control software to keep track of the changes made to your application. However, you will be surprised at how helpful this software is with even the simplest project. Chow helps you install, setup and use the CVS version control software with PHPEclipse and also discusses some common terms and concepts along the way. Lastly, Chow covers how to setup PHPEclipse to work with FTP, Secure FTP, WebDAV and Ant for publishing your new site.

As you can see, this book is more than just instructions on how to install these programs. It also gives you hands-on practice using them. You can download the complete application and sample files from the supporting website. Shu-Wai Chow has been working in the programming field for over eight years and is proficient in Java, JSP, PHP, ColdFusion, ASP, LDAP, XSLT and XSL-FO.

I have struggled with PHP, always wishing I could just find a plain-language guide. This book not only makes the material clear, it is actually fun to read!

Having finished the book, I am now writing codes and deploying sites with greater ease than I ever thought possible. If you are ready to make a big leap with your command of PHP, this book is all you need.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable.......2006-02-18

I don't know how I ever wrote php code without Eclipse! And this book makes it easy and FUN to use Eclipse. Shu Chow is a master at explaining the concepts involved as well as the functionality of the tool.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read Book.......2003-01-18

Sentient beings, in their constant transmigration throughout the realms of Samsara accumulate much more unwholesome karma than they can ever imagine. Humans are no exception to this, as some would like to believe. Negative karma is primarily created through breaking any of the Five Precepts and Ten Wholesome Deeds. However, the most difficult precept to uphold is the precept of refraining from sexual misconduct.

In his 145th book, Living this Moment in Purity, Living Buddha Lian-sheng recounted the hardships endured by humans in controlling their desires. Humans are born of sexual desire and as a result will perish from it. The Living Buddha cautions readers, "Amid the endless seas of karmic transgressions, hindrances of sexual desire are among the hardest to remove." The Living Buddha expressed his wish that everyone will maintain their purity, cherish their bodies and souls and seek the path of spiritual cultivation. To immerse oneself in cultivation is the only way to eradicate karmic hindrances that ultimately lead one to the suffering of transmigration.

Translated from Chinese, this amazing book has been made possible by the talents of Janny Chow and the publisher, Purple Lotus Society. The uncanny ability of Janny Chow to accurately translate even the personality of Living Buddha Lian-sheng makes this book very worthwhile to read. Thanks to the Purple Lotus Society in disseminating the universal compassion of the Buddha, such life-altering literature has been made available to all, regardless of race, creed or color. This book is a must for all.

5 out of 5 stars A Work of Purity.......2002-12-04

Living this Moment in Purity is a book that benefits all: including vajrayana practitioners and those engaged in high cultivations of mind and body, as well as everyday people with spiritual inclinations who seek a lamp of clarity in a time of anxiety.

While on secluded retreat, Master Sheng-yen Lu has continued to give profound Buddhist teachings through his prolific writings. These works have touched the hearts of many. Living this Moment in Purity is the 145th book written by His Holiness. For those English readers especially who anticipate each translation of Master Sheng-yen Lu`s work, this book is a precious gem.

Indeed, the faultless elegance, style and simplicity of Janny Chow`s translation make it seem as if there was no translation at all! While reading the book, I felt an intimate joy that I was receiving a direct transmission of Master Sheng-yen Lu`s words, without any sense of language barrier. These vast and profound teachings are given their proper homage and respect of clarity and power in the translation.

Each of the thirteen chapters of the book recounts a true encounter by Master Sheng-yen Lu, from his many years of giving spiritual consultations, with students who are faced with grave circumstances and dilemmas that are all found to be rooted in karmic causes and conditions. Master Sheng-yen Lu poignantly elucidates how we truly create our own realities. Yet as much as we create our own prison of sufferings, we also have the potential and opportunity to create a more positive reality and, ultimately, to reach perfect enlightenment. Indeed, it is precisely because of the infallible law of cause and effect that we have an opportunity to turn the light around! Karma is what is so real and immediate in our daily lives: it is what we have to work with.

Why do we need to cultivate morality? As any spiritual adept can testify, true morality is true bliss. In the preface of Living this Moment in Purity, Master Sheng-yen Lu writes: `With a deep understanding of the Buddha`s supreme wisdom, I live totally in the moment, "the moment of purity and liberation."

Janny Chow`s translation is inspired and pure. Only a cultivator, from years of patient and devotional practice, who has truly experienced the benefits of such an extraordinary teacher, could make such a work directly accessible to the hearts and minds of beings with varying tendencies and intellects.

Master Sheng-yen Lu is renowned for his ability to fuse teachings and bring people together who come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and to give teachings and inspiration to everyone appropriately. These are qualities that are only possessed by perfectly enlightened beings. With more than five million students, he continues, while on secluded retreat, to benefit beings ceaselessly through his prolific writings. His many books, reaching 160, include such varied topics as Feng Shui, Vajrayana Buddhism, Taoism, compassionate living, and spiritual philosophy in general. Only a dozen or so of these books have been translated into English.

We are lucky to receive this present translation from Janny Chow. As in all her classic translations, the radiance of Master Sheng-yen Lu`s wisdom, compassion and power truly shine through!

5 out of 5 stars Truly eye-opening, amazing accounts for the "why's" of life.......2002-08-20

This book is truly eye-opening. It answers many questions about life: why do some people seem to have their ways? yet, some others seem to hit the walls, in their careers, relationships, family life, etc.? Is it because of the difference in race, intelligence, talents, skills? Is it pure luck? Or is there some other intangible entity playing part?
Wow! I read this book from cover to cover in one sitting. I feel relieved from the pressures of life... All those why's fluttered away and nothing seems to bother me any longer. From time to time, I pick it up again, whenever I feel pressured, or just to perk me up.
This book is a must read. It will open your mind and enrich your life.

    Book Description

Imagining Boundaries explores the mapping of the intellectual tradition of Confucianism in Chinese history. The authors show that the Confucian tradition is not a neatly packaged organic whole in which the constitutive parts fall naturally into place, but rather that it displays the ruptures of all cultural constructions. Accordingly, Confucianism has been configured and reconfigured in time in response to changing intellectual and historical circumstances.

This anthology addresses the constant negotiation of the boundaries of Confucianism within itself and in relation to other intellectual traditions, the fluidity of the Confucian canon, the dialogical relations between text and discourse in establishing boundaries for the Confucian tradition, and the textual and discursive strategies employed in the imagining of boundaries, which expanded or restricted the intellectual space of Confucianism. Rejecting an interpretation of Confucianism as a homogenous master-narrative and worldview, the book uses the variegated histories of Confucianism to interrogate the tradition itself, unpacking and highlighting its complexity and diversity.

Massively oversized hardcover, glossy pictoral covers, 525 pp; my copy is new, perhaps because no potential reader could lift it. over 900 color and b/w photos, just about anything you'd want to know about Chow Chows; over 7 1/2 pounds of book, priced to compensate for projected expensive shipping costs (really, really BIG book) Essential to the Chow Chow lover, including history throughout the world, breeding, selection and puppy care, judging and conformation of the Chow Chow, obedience (such as it is with Chows), pedigrees, kennel histories, and much much more.

5 out of 5 stars Chow Chows Rule...........2002-07-01

I contributed 12 photographs to this project and at the time it was printed...this book did a good job of showing where the Chows where today. Also mentioned were the Kennels that raised the Chows and showed them in the ring. If you want a good quality Chow, then I think you should go with a breeder. I have owned 5 Chows and still have a white male that runs the house.
Full blooded Chows are a joy to live with...It was a great
experience to be a part of this project...

4 out of 5 stars The World of the Chow Chow.......2001-05-27

Compared to the other books specifically on Chow Chows, this book is better. However, that is not saying much. A real good book would deal more in-depth on the care, genetics, potential health problems and their cure or prevention, and breeding (whether to breed or not). Also important would be a more detailed and illustrated chapter on what to look for and avoid in the Chow. Other books, including this one, tend to overemphasize pages and pages of glossy photos of show winners, their kennels, their trophies, etc. - none of which are really helpful to the average Chow owner. A good book would stress the importance of health and functionality over show dog looks (which are influenced by passing fads, often downright harmful to a dog.) I sincerely hope that chow breeders get away from overly stocky, overly built chows who can't trot without panting heavily because of overly short muzzles, Chows with overly thick eyefolds that obscure their vision, Chows who don't whelp naturally because either their puppies have overly big heads or their anatomical structure no longer accommodates natural whelping, and chows that can't move right because they are not built right. The greatest travesty to Chows would be reduce the once proud, independent, working dog to a man-made freak like the English bulldog.

5 out of 5 stars A must for any Chow owner!.......2000-01-27

The World of the Chow Chow is absolutely fantastique! It is filled with stunning photos and an abundance of information on each Chow that is proudly displayed - it is only equaled by Isabella Milani's Chow Chow Champions of Europe in quality and it blows every other Chow book out of the water. Sure, it's a little bit pricey but it is definitely worth every penny. You will not regret owning this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent research as usual!.......1999-05-29

Dr. Draper has gathered and shared more valuable knowledge about the Chow Chow. Great work by a great man. Every Chow Chow owner should own both of his books before they take it upon themselves to bring one of these wonderful creatures into their lives. The knowledge is priceless.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book for Newbies.......1998-11-28

Well-organized and packed with information, I heartily recommend this book. Unlike many "web design" books, the authors really know their stuff and show examples of really well-designed sites. Visually, this book is a treat to read. The authors keep it simple, while giving people the tools and "eye" they need to design appealing web sites. This book didn't waste my money, although I'm an experienced web designer.

3 out of 5 stars Good for novice bad for intermediate.......1998-11-16

A very "Graphic" book comprising of pictures and illustrations. Examples are excellent but lack the serious and more practical aspect of it. The cost of the book bears most of the colour printing and not the content of it. An excellent and inspiring choice for beginners but a rather long-winded version for the more serious ones....as stated behind the book.

4 out of 5 stars Fancy page and great illustration.......1998-04-12

As usually, I first looked at the physical form of the book. I'm interesting with its full color design. I'm quite sure that this book is expensive enough. And I'm true, it's $49.99. I hoped that the content will equal with the price.

From the user level category at the back cover, I know that this book for New until Casual user. I wonder how it will explain about great web design for new user. After I read and passed chapter to chapter, I have plus mark for this book. It teaches the user how to layout the position of every object in the web page for nice looking purpose. With its full color figures, will make user enjoy their trip to great web design.

But, I have found one big minus mark for this book. It doesn't explain the syntax of HTML itself deeply. It just explains a few of HTML tags, and shows great figure of each example. If new user buy this book, he will be disappointed with the lack of HTML tag explained here.

Finally, for new user that had previous knowledge of HTML syntax or had the HTML Reference Book, buying this book is good for improving the knowledge of web page great design with nice looking. But for the truly new, it's not recommended to buy this book because its lacking of HTML syntax especially frame syntax. For $49.99 it's equal for full color examples and full loaded shareware programs for this book, but not for referencing HTML deeply.

1 out of 5 stars Investigate your own Intuition.......2007-06-10

I gave this one star. Do some research about this author. How does the Buddhist community view self proclamation? What is this idea of no thought? Does the 6th Patriarch's Platform Sutra speak to the no thought idea, and those who proclaim it? Investigate your own intuition, and determine if this is the best investment of your purchasing dollar.

5 out of 5 stars Chant the True Buddha Sutra.......2004-01-14

I have been chanting the True Buddha Sutra for over 3 years now and I can attest to the power of this sutra. This book will elucidate on passages from the sutra and give you wonderful insight on it's meanings. For example, Master Lu explains how "the key to realizing the Buddha jewel sambodhi is a quiescent mind". "No thought" or a quiescent mind is the key to the Buddha Jewel of Perfect Realization. He is telling us to put all thoughts to rest. Then he says, "that of realizing the Dharma Jewel is purity of body, speech, and mind." This is referring to the purification of our beings. When we hold a mudra, the body is engaged in a temporary purity for the duration of that moment. We must train ourselves to extend this temporary purity of the body, speech, and mind into all aspects of our daily lives: while we are exercising, standing, sitting, or lying down.
