Wonderful info for a beginner!.......2007-09-25
In an attempt to educate myself before bringing my shih tzu puppy home I stumbled onto this book. I have purchased others and this by far provided the most information that was helpful to me. Many others focus on showing these wonderful dogs and that is fine but not what I intend to do. This book gives basic info about this specific breed and their needs. I would highly recommend this book.
Best of Shih Tzu books!.......2007-07-30
This book is by far the best to get when you purchase a new Shih Tzu. I bought three books ( including this one ) and this was by far the most useful information without too much fluff. The other books were more into show dog do's and don'ts. As I bought my dog for companionship and to be a great dog for my kids, which he is without question, I didn't need that. Highly recommend it...
Great Book!.......2007-04-11

The Shih Tzu Handbook is a great introduction to the breed. More people should read such books and follow the recommendations. The pictures are adorable too!
Great Little Manual for New Owners.......2007-03-08
We recently acquired a new 7 week old Shih Tzu puppy. I purchased this book a few weeks before we brought the puppy home. It is chock-full of great facts, little tid-bits of interesting information about the breed and helpful tips in a variety of areas that include how to find a Shih Tzu, feeding, grooming, training and general care. It is well written, easy to understand and not overdone. The author also does not bombard the reader with her opinions, but rather makes suggestions on the topics.
This book is a great "Beginners Manual" for first time Shih Tzu owners.

Lots of Info on Shih Tzu.......2007-01-22
Jo Ann White is the Shih Tzu expert! This book tells you everything you need to know about the Shih Tzu. A must have for someone who is seriously considering this breed of dog.
I was very disappointed.......2006-12-08
I have to say with this book. While it seems like everyone else here thought it was wonderful, for me it offered very little pet advice and tons on showing and competition. I was looking for a book on how to raise a shih tzu as a pet and I have zero interest in breeding or showing, which are the groups for whom this book seems to have been written. If that's your goal then I wholely recommend it (which is why I gave the two stars rather than one), but if you're like me and the 98% of shih tzu owners who are looking for a pet based book, there are many better ones out there (for much less money, might I add!).
Shih Tzu Bible.......2006-03-10
Excellent resource for the Shih Tzu fancier and prospective owners. Relates everything from their orgin, care, grooming, how to "tie" a top knot, whelping, agility, etc. etc. Cannot recommend enough. Great book.
The only Shih Tzu book you need.......2005-05-18
This book covers everything about the shih tzu standard. It gives detailed pictures on all the aspects of the shih tzu. this book is 5x bigger then any other shih tzu book. this bok is a must if you are getting a shih tzu or show dog.
furbabyluvr.......2002-10-23
Very informative about the origins and showing of the shih tzu. I would have liked more in depth information on breeding but otherwise very good book with nice laminated pages and 100's of photos all in color. Overall very pleased with this book and would recommend highly.

Customer Reviews:
Good, but it "bites" at you?.......2005-04-25
I am in the process of purchasing a Shih Tzu puppy, and for that reason, this book WAS helpful. It was helpful in a generic sense about the pros and cons of puppies vs. adult dogs, purchasing from a responsible breeder, the expense associated with a puppy, etc., all of which I've seen in other general dog guides. The book outlines roughly the history and orgin of the Shih Tzu, but I found it a bit sparse and was dissapointed. However, there was a very good section on very basic dog training that is sensitive to the Shih Tzu breed. The photos and drawings in the book were a very good bonus. The one thing that I recoiled from was the almost harsh, scolding nature of the author as to who is qualified to add a Shih Tzu to their home, almost using scare tactics and extreme scenarios to frighten people away from the breed. While it is a valuable point that has it's place in any dog breed book, I found it was a bit much. I appreciated the clearly designed chapters and the sections on housetraining and health maintainence.
Pet stores get puppies from "good breeders"? PuhLEEZ!.......2004-03-04
No matter what the rest of the information in this book is like, the mere statement that "Well-run pet shops generally obtain their puppies from good breeders (page 9)" earns the book one star only because there's no way to give it a minus-10 rating. NO good breeder will sell a puppy to a pet store. Pet stores obtain their puppies from puppy mills; now that a lot of people know how appalling the puppy mills are, pet stores will tell people pups come from "local breeders" which just means a LOCAL puppy mill. I could not understand why the author would write such a thing until I read his bio. He works for a manufacturer of pet products. Never, never, never buy a dog or a cat from a pet store unless you enjoy supporting a traffic in animal cruelty.
A waste of money.......2003-04-22
I truly hate to give a book a bad review, because I know the work that goes into one, but this book truly .... It could pretty much be about any breed of dog, it has such a paucity of information about the shih tzu. I bought it because I had just adopted a shih tzu and wanted any help or tips I could get about the breed, and I learned nothing. Please don't waste your money on this book.
Shsi Tuz Complete Owner's Manual - Little money well spent.......2000-11-28
I am a first-time owner of a Shih Tzu puppie. I found this book extremely informative - from choosing your puppy, to crate training, to feeding, to what to expect from your puppy when you first take it home. It also details the breeding process and whether or not breeding is for you. The book is well worth the price.

Great 1st Book.......2000-11-25
This is a great book for the new Shih Tzu owner - breeders should think about adding it to the new puppy packets they give to new owners - pretty color pictures
More than expected.......2000-07-10
Having bought several other Shih Tzu books, I didn't have great expectations of this one. I was wrong. This book provided information without "selling" useful products. Information on picky eaters, whelping and training was very useful.
Book Description
To know a Shih Tzu is to love a Shih Tzu . . . they’re irresistible, coy, flirtatious, and passionately devoted companions. They love the good life, and though they can be shrewd (or selectively deaf, or consciously naïve), the Shih Tzu is so endearing that even “big dog” lovers find themselves swooning over this adorable breed. But is the Chinese Charmer the right match for you? Shih Tzu for Dummies answers all of your questions, like:
- What is a Shih Tzu really like?
- Can I get a Shih Tzu if I have children or other pets?
- How difficult is grooming? Can I do it myself or should I get a professional?
- How do I find a good breeder? What about a good vet?
- What should my Shih Tzu eat?
- Do small dogs really need that much training?
- How can I teach my Shih Tzu some basic commands?
The Shih Tzu is built for one job and one job alone: to be your close personal friend for life. A dog bred for companionship must be allowed to do its job, and its job is to be with you. So, if you have the time (for grooming), dedication (for training), and room (on your lap and in your heart), the Shih Tzu is a small dog with a lot of love just waiting for a new best friend.

Essential for new owners.......2007-08-17
I ordered this book after bringing home my 6-week old puppy, and it has helped me tremendously. I have one other book which talks a lot about the history and temperament of the breed, but this book is a lot more useful for everyday knowledge. I love the suggestions for getting the dog used to daily grooming so that he get used to being handled. My puppy is already starting to nip at my hands and feet, and this book is helping me respond to this and other undesirable behavior.
This is my first dog, and I had not a clue about how to housebreak or socialize him. With this book, I feel a lot more confident in my ability to raise a friendly family pet.
Shih Tzus for former dummies.......2007-08-17
This book was a great introduction for me, who has never owned a dog before. It teaches you about Shih Tzus, but also about dogs in general.
The techniques work, and I feel that I am now smarter than my puppy. A dummy no more!
Customer Reviews:
Overly focused on showing/competitions.......2004-02-09
This book is great if you're looking to figure out whether your shih tzu is showable and can participate in competitions. Other than that, there are far more helpful books out there in terms of puppy care, how to work with and train a shih tzu, etc. I didn't learn anything from this book since I don't intend to show my dog. There isn't anything else in this book that is unique or particularly well done. If you do want to show your furry friend... this might be for you
A Good Place to Start.......2000-06-12
"The Guide to Owning a Shih Tzu" is a good book for initial information regarding the Shih Tzu. It gives brief information on the Shih Tzu's history, standard, grooming, feeding, training and health. The pictures are charming... as are most Shih Tzu. This is a good place to start if you are looking for a book to introduce you to this breed.
Very lightweight vis-a vis the title.......1999-01-21
Apart from the history which was interesting, the contents covered the other topics in a very cursory fashion. The book was long on emotion as to "how marvellous your wonderful new puppy is" but gave little practical information on what a new owner wants to know as far as puppy care is concerned(first night at home, house training etc) which were glossed over in a couple of sentences. Far more space (and lavish photos) taken on showing the dog and flossying it up - a lot of owners just want an everyday pet, not a prima donna.

Customer Reviews:
Great Starter Book!.......2006-07-05
I breed Shih Tzu and I include this with my "puppy pack" for new owners. It is a great starter book for those who are not familiar with the breed, with great pictures and explanations. I would recommend a more thorough book for someone who already knows about the breed and wants more in-depth info, but for a beginning, this is the book!
A must have for Shih Tzu owners.......2002-08-09
I bought this book a month before I actually got my first Shih Tzu puppy. It welcomes you to the world of the Shih Tzu, and explains almost everything you need to know about the breed. I was fully prepared for when my puppy arrived home, and I learn most of it from this excellent book.
It is a must have for Shih Tzu owners, especially when you are not used to the breed yet. It goes from "What is a Shih Tzu?", the breed's history, bringing your dog home, to how to feed , groom and keep your Shih Tzu healthy. The last 2 parts of the book explain how to enjoy your dog(like basic training) and also recommended reading.
I recommend this book to Shih Tzu owners or for those who are considering getting a Shih Tzu. And by the way, Shih Tzu are great!!!...
Wonderful!.......2001-06-19
I just bought my first Shih Tzu, and I think this book is invaluable. It's clear, well organized, and it has information on a wide variety of important topics, like first aid, grooming, potty training, and more! Perfect for Shih Tzu owner!
a very informative little book.......2001-06-17
The book was very informative and easy to read. I would recommend this book to current and future shih tzu owners. The only drawback of the book is that there were some topics which I think are essential for every shih tzu owner to know, that were not explained in detail in this book. Jo Anne White proves though, that she is an authority in shih tzu knowledge and care.
induce vomitting when?.......2000-05-30
I enjoyed the entire section on the Shih tzu, but would have liked to read more about only the Shih tzu. For general dog information, I can get other books.
This however was the only book I have found that has an extensive list on poisons for dogs, especially in people food. There is one section on when to induce vomiting, and there is (I believe) a huge typo. It says to induce vomiting when the dog has eaten something sharp and something else. I think it should say "DO NOT induce vomiting.!
In the list of poisons, it would be interesting to see what the side effects are. Ex. Onions cause autoimmune something anemia.
Product Description

learning about a ShihTzu.......2007-02-13
This book was somewhat helpful. It was interesting to know about the personality of this breed. But I have a lot of unanswered questions now that I have had the puppy for two weeks.
Living with a Shih Tzu, your dog will love it.......2007-01-13
The book is a great manual for Shih Tzu owners. From day one it was helpful for us to understand how to handle our puppy. She is now 8 weeks old and is healthy, active, curious, mischievous and sometimes seems to have read the book before we did. The author perfectly describes the usual behavior of this breed and, best of all, she provides useful hints and instructions on how to deal with specific situations and problems such as feeding, discipline and playtime. We recommend the book with enthusiasm.
Must have for Shih Tzu owners.......2006-11-20
As a trainer and breeder of Shih Tzu for over ten years I highly reccomend this book. It has great practical advise and is full of great pictures and stories. I give this to all my Shih Tzu puppy buyers. Enjoy your bundle of joy!!!
Living with a Shih Tzu.......2006-07-08
As the owner of an eight week Shih Tzu, the book provided many good ideas on raising my puppy. This book was recommended by the breeder as a "how to" book.
