Book Description

“We're going to raise traders just like they raise turtles in Singapore.”

So trading guru Richard Dennis reportedly said to his long-time friend William Eckhardt nearly 25 years ago. What started as a bet about whether great traders were born or made became a legendary trading experiment that, until now, has never been told in its entirety.

Way of the Turtle reveals, for the first time, the reasons for the success of the secretive trading system used by the group known as the “Turtles.” Top-earning Turtle Curtis Faith lays bare the entire experiment, explaining how it was possible for Dennis and Eckhardt to recruit 23 ordinary people from all walks of life and train them to be extraordinary traders in just two weeks.

Only nineteen years old at the time-the youngest Turtle by far-Faith traded the largest account, making more than $30 million in just over four years. He takes you behind the scenes of the Turtle selection process and behind closed doors where the Turtles learned the lucrative trading strategies that enabled them to earn an average return of over 80 percent per year and profits of more than $100 million. You'll discover

Offering his unique perspective on the experience, Faith explains why the Turtle Way works in modern markets, and shares hard-earned wisdom on taking risks, choosing your own path, and learning from your mistakes.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Shell Game.......2007-10-01

The reviews would have you believe that this book is a great tutorial on trading. It's not. Instead, I found it to be jargon filled, difficult to understand, and internally inconsistent. Save your money.

3 out of 5 stars Below the Moving Average of Expectations.......2007-09-01

I rarely like to trade against the market, but if the reviews on this board are the market, then I'm short. Like most of the reviews here, I was lured into buying this book primarily by the mystic surrounding the Turtles. Now, as far as my curiosity about how that 1980s bet began and played out, I was not disappointed. Faith spars no ink on letting the reader into how the Turtles were formed and what is was like trading within the group. What was missing, I thought, was anything approaching the hype. Faith gives short srift to some of the actual trades made, instead choosing to focus on general requirements that might have not been common then, but are standard practice for today's active commodities trader. Perhaps that statement is proof of just how successful the bet was. If so, praise be to the Turtles -- but this doesn't make the book worth the time or the money.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and Informative.......2007-08-31

Easy to read and captivating for those interested in the trading "lore." Also provides simplistic insight into systematic trading - not bad for those just getting into the game.

5 out of 5 stars A real turtle speaks.......2007-08-22

This book is the real deal. No hype or BS. Very refreshing to finally see the real turtle rules explained in context by someone who lived them. You read the exact rules the turtles used AND why they had those rules. In a market full of books by posers this book shines.

This book has what all the other trend following books don't: A deep understanding of trading as a game of risk and clear thinking. The most valuable and enjoyable features of this excellent book is the clarity of the ideas expressed. This is only possible from someone who deeply understands them. Reading this book was a pleasure (except for the self involved foreword by Van Tharp).

2 out of 5 stars Had high expectations but were not met by a long shot............2007-08-17

This book was supposed to teach you the way the turtle traders made millions, this book has some basic trading strategies that you can find in any other trading basics book. Jim Cramer's books teach you much more than this one, dont waste your money.

Book Description

It's been five years since the original turtle lady, old Miss Lovie Rutledge, passed away, but her legacy lives on with some special women, especially Toy and her daughter, young Little Lovie.

Toy Sooner kept her graveside vow to her beloved mentor. She left behind an abusive, dysfunctional lifestyle to become a strong single mother and aquarist at the South Carolina Aquarium. But success has taken its toll, leaving Toy fearful of change and risks.

Caretta Rutledge, Florence Prescott and Emmaline Baker have all experienced loss. This summer, with each other's friendship and support, they will try to make their dreams a reality.

The turtle season begins the day Toy rescues a sick sea turtle on the beach. When Toy brings the loggerhead to the aquarium, she begins a turtle hospital with the help of her boss, Ethan. As the summer progresses and the sea turtles take their measured steps toward healing and freedom Toy, Cara, Flo and Emmi must find their own strength to face their fears and move courageously toward their futures.

Mary Alice Monroe delivers another deeply satisfying novel written with an eye to nature and keen insights into the connections between women.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Beach Reading.......2007-08-24

Swimming Lessons is a wonderful sequel to The Beach House. It has such wonderful relationships among the characters themselves and with the loggerhead turtles and the coastal environment.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, Satisfying Sequel.......2007-05-30

This absolutely wonderful sequel to "The Beach House" brings together all the "turtle ladies" whose mission it is to rescue endangered sea turtles who lumber up onto South Carolina's beaches once a year to lay their eggs in a timeless ritual. Civilization being what it is, the nests would be destroyed, purposely or not, if this dedicated band of women (and men) were not there each year to tirelessly make sure that doesn't happen.

Like "The Beach House," this book is based on fact; Monroe herself is a self-proclaimed turtle lady. The plot revolves around the characters we met in the first book: Single mother Toy now has her degree and a job at the aquarium, which is about to get much more prestigious. Her darling little girl Lovie, named after the matriarch who passed away in the last book, is a precocious, wonderful 6-year-old, a self-proclaimed "LITTLE turtle lady." Cara and Brett, who fell in love in the last book and married, are trying hard to have a baby. Irrascible Flo is getting older and too proud to ask for help. And in this book, the menacing father of Toy's child, Darryl, suddently reappears, wanting to connect with the daughter he abandoned before her birth.

All of this makes for a quick and interesting page-turner, but the backbone of the book is the conservation of the giant turtles, and for me, that's the grabber.

"Swmming Lessons" is the perfect summertime book, whether you're at the beach (how more perfect could it get?), around a pool, or just lazing on your front porch. I urge you to grab it and gobble it up!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Followup to The Beach House.......2007-05-13

For several years, I've enjoyed the work of Mary Alice Monroe. And when I noted that Swimming Lessons was coming out, I knew I needed to catch up on my reading and start with the Beach House (the book that introduced us to the Swimming Lessons characters). As usual, the author didn't disappoint me and created a lovely book about mother/daughter relationships that I could easily relate to. But more than that, I became equally intrigued with Loggerhead Turtles. So the follow up book - Swimming Lessons, was an added bonus to keep involved with the characters. Again, wonderfully written, you form a deep attachment to the characters and get caught up with the lives of the turtles -- this time from a different perspective. I highly recommend Swimming Lessons, but also recommend you start with The Beach House.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story.......2007-05-12

This was a wonderful sequel to the Beach House. Mary Alice Monroe does such a good job of providing an analogy between a mother and her child through her characters and with the sea turtles. It truly warms your heart.

5 out of 5 stars Receives Mary Alice Monroe's own reading.......2007-05-12

Mary Alice Monroe's SWIMMING LESSONS receives Mary Alice Monroe's own reading which spices the lively story of a mentor's influence on the next generation. Three women who have experienced loss find friendship and support together one summer as turtle season begins.

Yet more wisdom cast down from high atop Mt. Seuss, this cheerful trio of tales teaches some valuable lessons in humility--thanks to a sharp-eyed worm, a bragging bear and rabbit, a fuzzy-tailed bird, and a couple hundred turtles led by their foolish King Yertle.

Yertle's story leads off with his attempt to build a bigger kingdom on the backs of his loyal subjects (literally). King of everything he can see, Yertle orders his turtles to stack up under him to build a towering throne. ("He made each turtle stand on another one's back and he piled them all up in a nine-turtle stack.") But a plain little turtle named Mack--stuck at the bottom--decides he's had enough. ("I know up on top you are seeing great sights, but down on the bottom we, too, should have rights!")

Following Yertle's downfall, a whiny girl-bird named Gertrude McFuzz wishes she had two feathers, just like Miss Lolla-Lee-Lou: "One droopy-droop feather. That's all that she had. And, oh! That one feather made Gertrude so sad." But even when Gertrude gets her wish--and then some--she finds that vanity has its price. Meanwhile, in "The Big Brag," a proud rabbit and an even-prouder bear duke it out in a battle of the senses, arguing over who's the best of the beasts, only to get their clever comeuppance from a wild-eyed little worm. Yertle the turtle wasn't content being king of the pond. - This story teaches you about being happy where you are.
The other stories are about being happy with WHO you are. Being happy just being you.

And Not Bragging cause someone is going to call you on it.

Great stories :) I love Dr Suess

5 out of 5 stars Having Enough ..........2007-07-11

This wasn't the first book I read as a child, but from the time I first sat down and read that [title story] last line, it's been my favorite. Some messages become a part of who you are and what you want to be in the world. Nobody tells it like Dr. Seuss. Be good turtle each other! (Smile, groan .... sneeze?!) :-)

5 out of 5 stars Timeless lessons Dr. Seuss's style.......2007-03-10

My daughter who is in kindergarten bought this book home from her school library after they had been reviewing the works of Dr. Seuss. This is by far her favorite Dr. Seuss book and a great value as it contains 3 full-length stories. The illustrations were very appealing and made the both of us laugh. This book would not appeal to children under age 5 as it requires some concrete thought in which children may not necessarily be ready for until they enter school. There are important lessons (envy, pride, etc) to learn that are perfect for school-age children to comprehend. This is definitly a must have for the school age child.

4 out of 5 stars Cute Book.......2007-10-06

My 10 month old son plays with this book several times a week. I think he likes the rhymn when I read it to him. He is learning to turn pages so we bounce back and forth. His attention span is fairly short so the wonderful pictures are nice. We both enjoy this book along with others in this series.

5 out of 5 stars Chewable book helps baby develop "appetite" for reading.......2007-08-25

I bought this book for my newborn because I wanted her to grow up loving to read. When she was a few months old, she loved to chew on the soft cloth pages and stare at the brightly colored pictures. Then she learned how to turn the pages. Now at 10 months, she still loves to touch the 3-D part of each page and hear me read the simple rhymes.

We love all of the different objects and textures that she can touch and explore on each page:
1) Padded aqua turtle shell
2) Shiny metallic fish
3) Ribbon used as water from a whale spout
4) Padded pink vinyl crab shell
5) Silver seahorse fin
6) Green felt octopus tentacles
7) Pink oyster shell with satin inner lining
8) Terry cloth seahorse
9) Metallic seaweed rolls

This crinkly cloth book is easy for babies to hold and great for teething. It also keeps little hands busy during car rides. Although the manufacturer recommends surface cleaning only, I've successfully washed mine inside a mesh lingerie bag on the gentle cycle. And it still looks new...

5 out of 5 stars good first book.......2007-08-07

It has bright colors to attract the babies. the wordings are simple and rhyme well. my daughter loves looking at it since the age of 2 month old.

4 out of 5 stars Keeps my baby's interest but has clumsy text.......2007-07-06

My daughter loves this book, it's her favorite of the Priddy cloth books. This one has enough crinkle noises and tactile items to keep her baby hands busy -it keeps her occupied for a good stretch of time. My only complaint (as with all the Priddy cloth books) is that the the actual text and rhymes have a lot to be desired. It just seems forced to make the rhyme and meter work - it ends up very clumsy. I rarely read it now as she's just very interested in holding and playing with the pages.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome kids book.......2007-05-09

This book is very fun with all sorts of colors and textures. My son loves to look at it and feel the different things. It has just the right amount of words too. I own three Roger Priddy books and I am VERY happy with all of them.

First I will begin by listing the programs/CD's/books that I have purchased from Lite Books. 4 books: A Boy and a Bear, The Affirmation Web, A Boy and a Turtle and The Goodnight Caterpillar plus 5 audio CDs: Indigo Dreams, Indigo Ocean Dreams, Indigo Dreams: Garden of Wellness, Indigo Teen Dreams and Indigo Dreams: Adult Relaxation plus: Children's Stress Awareness Curriculum Designed for Youth Education.
Next I will say "THEY ARE ALL AMAZING!" For 9 years I worked as an advocate for children in a homeless shelter for women and children. I was constantly challenged with finding resources that were short, effective, and held the attention of the children. I was able to find resources but not all in one spot, I had to piece a little of this and a little of that to reach a fully rounded program that worked. The tools that Lori Lite created within each book and each CD offer short, highly effective programs that hold the attention of children. And best of all it is a package deal! You do not have to pull from any other program because the tools that she gives you are all you need. I am now an HHP and use the books and CD's when working with children of any age to simply give them powerful tools that they can use in daily life and hopefully carry into teen and adult hood. In my opinion Lite Books offer the best resources available to the health and wellness of children on the market. Within my own life I use the CD's as a nightly staple within the bedtime process of my children. They have not been able to stay awake long enough to finish even one of the stories on the CD yet. That is how relaxing the CD's are. For myself I have to stay sitting up when tucking them in and listening with them because if I get comfortable I am waking up in the middle of the night still in my kid's room! During daylight hours and when my children are well rested I have worked each session on the CD's with them from beginning to end. Now when they are feeling overwhelmed, frightened, angry etc... I will see them use the techniques they have learned through Loris programs, they move quickly from the negative feeling to a positive approach and positive result.
Lite Books offers professional and friendly customer service, with great shipping time. I am so grateful to have found this amazing resource and look forward to being one of their strongest professional advocates as well as personal customers!

Book Description

Rich with humor and metaphors from other cultures and disciplines, Turtles develops the characteristics common to the geniuses whose patterning formed the initial body of NLP techniques. You will learn how these skills are readily available for cultivating your own personal genius in a way that is respectful of the power of the unconscious.

This book is the documentary, with added notes and stories, of Grinder/Delozier's five day seminar called "Prerequisites To Personal Genius". John Grinder and Judith Delozier get their participants to think about the structure of thinking; how our thought patterns become our beliefs about reality. The limitations of those thought patterns can be overcome, however, when a person is able to expand his/her perceptual filters and model "geniuses" -- this is the process which has been shown in the lives of people such as Einstein, Milton Erickson, and Gregory Bateson.

Throughout the book, the authors challenge you to reexamine the structures of your "mind" and the ways that all parts can be integrated in an internal dance.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Where's Bandler when you need him.......2007-09-04

I thought that the information presented in this book was good, it just needed a much better presentation, and unfortunately, the book falls short in helping us understand just exactly what's going on.

This seminar would have been much more understandable on video. About a third of the time that the readers spend with Grinder and DeLozier is completely unaccounted for, when they go off to learn african dancing. Unfortunately, because we can't see anything that is going on during these activities (critical to the understanding of the book, mind you), some of the discussion and lecture is difficult to follow, and it's impossible to actually try the activities at home and be a part of the experience.

In fact, it seems like the authors went out of their way to make it impossible for us to see into this activity. Each day's sessions break off right before they begin the dance lessons, and each day seems to start after all of the dancing discussion has already taken place. When the audience goes to talk to the African dance instructor at the end of the novel to share some of their experiences and ask him questions, the book comes to an end. Thus, this experience which the authors felt was so key to understanding the lecture in person is completely left out of the book version of the seminar, and that's a real shame.

Then there is the lecture itself, which is primarily comprised of Grinder and DeLozier reading biology books and Carlos Castaneda to the audience at large. It makes for a very unusual presentation that is very often difficult to follow, and there is no way that you can set this book down unless you're at a clearly defined stopping point (which are very few and far between, especially at the beginning).

The dialogue between the authors and the audience is often poorly handled, as it doesn't account for interruptions, so an author will speak a complete thought answering a question or interjecting a response to something that hasn't happened yet, followed by the question or comment that was just answered. If you think that "Persuasion Engineering" is poorly written, wait until you see this!

What this book showed me is exactly why Bandler is still famous and why Grinder has fallen off the face of the planet. He's not entertaining, and he's not particularly good at explaining himself in his own words! Half of the questions he is asked are answered with a quote from one of the source books, while the others were done with rambling stories that required four pages full of backstory so that we can understand what happened. There is one segment of Grinder giving out homework that literally spans 22 pages thanks to three easy-to-answer questions.

For the information included in this book, it's worth the price, but make sure to set aside full reading sessions if you're going to read this because it's very hard to follow and very disorganized. And don't think you're going to get to experience this book at any level other than a theoretical one, because it's just not possible. A possibly great guide gone bad.

4 out of 5 stars It's the journey, not the destination.......2004-08-21

John Grinder and Judith Delozier provide the reader with a journey through one of their seminars. It wakes you up to your life. Or, more accurately, it can. I have read almost every NLP in print and pretty much all of the ones out of print. I hold certifications in NLP and Ericksonian Hypnosis as well a my Unversity education as an anthropologist. I found this book a bit of a stretch for my vocabulary, and a wonderful journey through a series of highly transformative experiences. First, let me say I own most of the NLP books and highly esteem John Grinder & Richard Bandler. NLP is amazing stuff. TURTLES ALL THE WAY DOWN, on the other-hand, is, to use a re-frame, left-overs from the NLP School Cafeteria with a steak-house price. This one is going into the garbage where school cafeteria swill belongs. Don't waste your time or your money on it. Buy the other NLP books! This one won't make you a champ, and you won't feel like a chump.

5 out of 5 stars Impeccable Internal Organizational Patterning.......2002-02-20

Turtles is a book for people already exposed in some degree to the basic tenets of NLP. It is not "about" NLP, but how to create logical structures and frameworks within yourself to employ these (and other) tools in a most effective and ecological manner. A great deal of emphasis is placed on applying the right energy to the right "logical level". Often, people are making the right move in a situation, but applying that move to the wrong logical level. This book is about identifying logical levels and having an internal structure that allows you to interface at the right time at the right logical level with the right change- the minimum effort that makes the maximum difference. Grinder is a master storyteller given his exceptional background, and he winds the teachings around interesting and compelling stories from his and other fascinating folks' experiences. Worth the read even if you never learned anything about NLP. Grinder's a cool dude! :)

1 out of 5 stars Nothing New.......2001-11-08

Much as I hate an argument, I must point out that the previous reviewer is seriously misinformed if he thinks that the material in this book was in some way new or different from the original NLP.

Terrence McCLendon, writing in "The Wild Days : NLP 1972-1981" explains in detail how Bandler and Grinder discovered Castaneda's work (the basis of "New Code" NLP) in 1974, and quickly incorporated various ideas - especially "stopping the world" - into their teaching at that time.

Personally I found this book badly written and tedious in the extreme. So nothing new, and definitely not recommended.

Book Description

From the familiar painted turtle basking on a log to the majestic long-lived giant tortoises, turtles are among the most fascinating animals on the planet. For many years Franck Bonin, Bernard Devaux, and Alain Dupré have traveled the world together to study turtles in their natural habitats. In this complete guide to the world's nearly 300 species of turtles, the authors reveal intimate, little-known details of these intriguing reptiles in their native habitats: what they eat, where they live, how they behave, and when and where they lay their eggs.

Originally written in French, the text has been translated by one of the world's leading turtle experts, Peter C. H. Pritchard. The result is a beautifully written and illustrated book that belongs on the shelf of every library, public and private. Written for the millions of turtle lovers and nature enthusiasts who will find answers to their questions within its pages, this book is bound to become the standard reference for years to come.

I highly recommend it a must-have reference for all people serious about turtles. It is up-to-date with the most recent taxonomy.

5 out of 5 stars Key to any serious turtle researcher........2007-05-17

College-level holdings, many an aquarium shop, and any serious natural history collection must have TURTLES OF THE WORLD. It's a definitive survey originally written in French and translated by a leading turtle expert, Peter C.H. Pritchard. Nearly 300 species of world turtles are covered including their habitats, lifestyle, and maps and photos. Co-written by a veterinarian expert with turtles, a nonprofit turtle research foundation and an avid conservationist, TURTLES OF THE WORLD's color photos pack every page and its information is well-rounded and key to any serious turtle researcher.

3 out of 5 stars Turtles of the World: a companion book for turtle fanciers.......2007-02-27

Turtles of the World by Frank Bonin, Bernard Devaux, and Alain Dupre was originally published in French in 1996 and was followed by two editions. Peter Pritchard, a well-known turtle biologist and conservationist, translated the third edition into English for Johns Hopkins University Press. The hardback book is printed on coated paper and bound well for moderate use. It is more of a reference book than something one would carry in the field. In general, Turtles of the World is a good reference to all known species of turtles.

The front matter takes up 9 pages and covers general biology, paleontology, anatomy, physiology, behavior, and conservation. None of these sections is thorough, so readers should find other sources for in-depth information on these subjects. Each section to follow contains short species accounts that includes distribution, description, natural history, and protection. The distribution maps are shaded portions of continents showing country and major river outlines. One to two color photographs accompany each account. The maps are only generalizations and should not be considered accurate. The photos are attractive but provide only one or two views that may or may not be useful for identification because of the variation in color and pattern commonly exhibited by turtles. Some photos are much better than others.

Turtle taxonomy is in a state of flux. Name changes are published yearly due to our increasingly better understanding of relationships and geneaology. Some of the names in this book are stable but others; some are outdated. Kinosternon odoratum on page 173, for example, was used only temporarily in the scientific literature, as the long-standing name Sternotherus odoratus has remained otherwise stable for over a century. Nowhere in the species account is the more commonly used name mentioned. Thus, the names in this book should be checked against other, more scientific sources. Note that only scientific names are used in the book. Common names are not provided except in some accounts where they are deep in the text. The scientific names are followed by the authority, the name or names of the person or persons who provided the scientific name used here and the year in which that name was published. Readers unfamiliar with taxonomy will wonder why some of these names are in parentheses and others not. Nowhere in the book is that explained. Those in parentheses signify that the scientific name was originally placed in another genus by the authority, but that later changes put the species name in a different genus. Note here that a species name consists of two words: a genus and a species combined. The species name must always be accompanied by the generic name.

This book gives short shrift to the extreme plight turtles face around the world. They are declining at an alarming rate, especially in southeast Asia where nearly all species are threatened with immenent full-blown extinction. Why? Two reasons: consumption of turtles in China and other oriential markets, and loss of habitat. Readers should search for other sources to learn about the problems and efforts being made by people who love turtles to keep species from declining further.

Turtles of the World is a book that all turtle hobbyists and many professionals will want on their bookshelves for reference and comparative photographs. It should be used in conjunction with other books on turtle biology and identification. Peter Pritchard should be thanked for making this book available to the English audience.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference, but doesn't replace previous works........2007-01-29

Bonin, Devaux, and Dupre's book takes on a big challenge in cataloguing world turtle diversity and will serve well as an impressive addition.

The introduction is 9 pages and concise. Phylogenetic history, a couple of ancestral species, anatomy, senses, metabolism, behavior, and threats are summarized in prose oscillating between introductory and expert. The rest of the book is comprised of species accounts.

Pictures in this book are better used for fun than identification. The picture of savannah sidenecks (Podocnemis vogli) is awesome. Quite a few species are not pictured and subspecies/ regional variations are not visually comparable. There is not consistency in shot angles for practical comparison between species. Some species are pictured only as hatchlings, some are depicted only by a close zoom on the head, and at least two species appear to have their photographs switched. Picture captions don't include species' names, which may cause confusion. This book's visuals could be aided by Vetter's pictorial "Turtles of the World" multi-volume Terralog series.

Range maps are blobbed in. The map outlines are crude, and range outlines do not respect watersheds or other important distributional boundaries. A general idea of where species occur can be drawn.

Species' Description's are good, although no dichotomous keys are provided. The Natural History section for many species is shorter than current information necessitates, while for some (especially some tortoise species and the marine turtles) this section is disproportionately long. Details on reproduction (laying season, egg size, etc.) are given for some species, but absent from many for which information is available. The Protection section is very inconsistent between species. For some, IUCN and CITES information is included, while for others, it's left out. National protection status is discussed for turtles of France and French Guyana, but absent for virtually every other nation's turtle fauna.

There are virtually no citations throughout the book even though it's written in relatively diagnostic lingo. The bibliography is very short (page and a half) for the amount of information included, and information from the authors' experiences should have been noted where appropriate.

The French-to-English translation must be well done, because the book reads very cleanly, especially for a semi-technical reference. The book's construct is just like a textbook; cover, paper and print should survive many years of steady use.

This reference is not a replacement for the previous "Turtles of the World" by Ernst and Barbour (1989) or "Encyclopedia of Turtles" by Pritchard (1979), but it will serve well in the possession of anyone with an interest in turtle diversity. It may well do a stronger job than both previous works in sparking interest from future turtle enthusiasts through its more accessible nature.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent new reference work.......2007-01-10

This is an indispensable book for any ardent turtle lover or biologist. It updates and improves on the standard works of the past, such as Peter Pritchard's much-quoted Encyclopedia of Turtles. This latest and most up-to-date encyclopedia, originally written in French, has been translated into English by the same Dr. Pritchard, one of the world's foremost turtle experts, and contains every single turtle species still in existance, about half of which will be completely new to most people with an interest in these animals.

The book focuses on the lives of these animals in the wild, so people wanting to read about keeping turtles in captivity will not find answers to their questions here. The work contains a wealth of color photos, geographical maps and preservation statuses for all species. As all species had to fit into one volume, some are not described in as much detail as others, but as these are mainly subspecies, this is a minor quibble.

Warmly recommended.

Book Description

How does a bird flock keep its movements so graceful and synchronized? Most people assume that the bird in front leads and the others follow. In fact, bird flocks don't have leaders: they are organized without an organizer, coordinated without a coordinator. And a surprising number of other systems, from termite colonies to traffic jams to economic systems, work the same decentralized way. Turtles, Termites, and Traffic Jams describes innovative new computational tools that can qhelp people (even young children) explore the workings of such systems--and help them move beyond the centralized mindset.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Is a good start but needs more..........2007-06-13

Book needs some more content, it gives a good first level intro but does not develop it into more interesting/advanced things.

50% of the book is a 'sales' pitch for StarLogo.

If you have experience with writing code for simulations this book is a bit light technically.

Still has some interesting ideas in it.

5 out of 5 stars The arcane made accessible.......2006-03-28

On the surface, the book seems focused on computers and even video games. This makes the activities appealing for middle and high school students. However, the ideas in this book are actually relevant to two entirely different fields: 1) genetics, and 2) artificial intelligence. Both these fields have at their centers the concept of complexity arising out of simplicity. Students who work their way though the activites in this book will find that Dr. Resnick offers a window into a deep mathematical world that has applications far beyond computers and games.

4 out of 5 stars Great Starting Point in Agent based Modelling.......2005-10-17

Mitchel Resnick shares a lovely sense of wonder, discovery and fascination in this slim, easily read volume about agent based modelling. Using micro-worlds (termites, ants and other modelling metaphors) Resnick shows us how collective behaviours are more than a simple sum of the parts - and through his experiments using StarLogo programming he shows the nature of emergent behaviours that come through decentralised thinking.

His reading list is a great starting point for anyone fascinated by Complexity and Agent Based Modelling, and so too is his elegant list of guiding heuristics that he has learned through toying with various ants, termites, forest fires and traffic jams.

- Positive feedback (in models) often plays a vital role.
- Randomness can help create order. Random isn't always chaotic.
- A Flock is not a big bird. The behaviour of groups should not be confused with the behaviour of individuals.
- A traffic jam is not just a collection of cars. Emergent objects have an ever-changing composition.
- The hills are alive. Don't just focus on the individual objects - look also at their environment.

This volume helped our research team design approach agent-based modelling, and put us in touch with other avenues of decentralised thinking: for example Network Theory. Best of all, Resnick helped us lighten-up. This book (and its subject matter) has profound ideas, but never loses a delicious sense of awe. Recommended.

3 out of 5 stars interesting, but describes an old version of the software.......2003-09-28

This is a book describing the research of a team at MIT using a version of the educational language "Logo". Running in a simple graphical environment which supports multiple parallel operation of code in the same shared space. Write a few lines of code for an "ant", then let 1000 of them loose. The current version of this "StarLogo" system is written in Java, and available as a free download for anyone to play with.

The use of Logo is both a strength and a weakness of the approach. The strength is that the code is concise and easy to understand. The weakness is that there is only one source of the software, and anyone wishing to try it is limited to the available download. This would not be such a limitation if the book described the same version, but unfortunately things have moved on a lot since the book was written, and few (if any) of the examples will work without alteration.

As well as the development of the StarLogo system, the book covers experiments in emergent behaviour. Typical sections include how parameter and environment changes can affect the growth and development of simulated ant colonies, and a theoretical basis for those "phantom traffic jams" we have all experienced.

This book is certainly interesting if you are interested in developing parallel software simulations, or if you are interested in marginal computer languages, but don't expect the code to work without effort.

5 out of 5 stars Invention - on all levels.......2002-10-14

This book provided the motivating force to write my first, and last, review for Amazon.com.

Over the past 5 years since my first reading Mitchel Resnick's Turtles Turmites and Traffic Jams, the book has come up on numerous occasions related to several topics, two of which most basically:

1) Writing style - Resnick's clear, well-researched, simple yet profound style. His background as journalist and inventor enables TT&T to walk a new line between source material and criticism.

2) Content - Resnick's theoretical application of emergent behavior to education is robust; his practical educational tools (starlogo and later, mindstorms) are a fundamentally clear and wondrous collapsing of idea into artifact.

I will include this book with few others in my life bibliography.

Book Description

Though nature is indifferent to the struggles of her creatures, the human effect on them is often premeditated. The distressing decline of sea turtles in Pacific waters and their surprising recovery in the Atlantic illuminate what can go both wrong and right from our interventions, and teach us the lessons that can be applied to restore health to the worlds oceans and its creatures. As Carl Safinas compelling natural history adventure makes clear, the fate of the astonishing leatherback turtle, whose ancestry can be traced back 125 million years, is in our hands. Writing with verve and color, Safina describes how he and his colleagues track giant pelagic turtles across the worlds oceans and onto remote beaches of every continent. As scientists apply lessons learned in the Atlantic and Caribbean to other endangered seas, Safina follows leatherback migrations, including a thrilling journey from Monterey, California, to nesting grounds on the most remote beaches of Papua, New Guinea. The only surviving species of its genus, family, and suborder, the leatherback is an evolutionary marvel: a reptile that behaves like a warm-blooded dinosaur, an ocean animal able to withstand colder water than most fishes and dive deeper than any whale. In his peerless prose, Safina captures the delicate interaction between these gentle giants and the humans who are finally playing a significant role in their survival.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An incredible story of both humans and turtles.......2007-07-31

Safina gave a public lecture at my university (near where he grew up on Long Island) last year about Leatherbacks.* He speaks with even more passion than he writes! We purchased a number of (signed!) copies of Voyage of the Turtle and Song for the Blue Ocean.

Safina joins scientists, fishermen and conservationists from all over the world to learn about the turtles. He accompanies, to name a few, a shrimper off the east coast of the US, turtle counters on remote Pacific islands, swordfishermen near Canada, high-tech biologists in Monterrey Bay, and so many more. It is an incredible adventure laced with stories of the animals, people, science, cultures, politics, myths, technology and nature that Safina encounters. It is really as much a story about humanity as it is about turtles.

The book is simultaneously depressing and uplifting. It reveals the horrific and heroic things humans are capable of. Much of it is simply shocking: the number of sea animals, including turtles, that died for every shrimp you eat is outrageous; Leatherbacks that nest in Mexico spend their time in Japan; changing the shape of a fishing hook slightly can save 90% more turtles; etc.

The turtles' situation is dire, like all other conservation issues. Safina weaves many conservation themes together, while not being "preachy." This would be an amazing book to read in a biology class at any level.

* Safina capitalizes all species' names in the book, and now it seems simply wrong not to capitalize the name of one of the greatest animals alive.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully written, an inspiring book about some of the earth's most amazing creatures.......2007-07-29

I have always loved sea turtles and Safina's book has left me with a greater appreciation & desire to see these wonderful animals protected. This book is written so that it is both informative and entertaining. Carl Safina's insights, perspective, and style are really engaging. The language he uses to explain his travels to the reader draw one into the world of the sea turtle. I am so impressed by Safina's devotion to the environment and his ability to express himself in words, that I have recently purchased Eye of the Albatross and Song for the Blue Ocean (also by Safina) from Amazon.com!

5 out of 5 stars Traipsing after turtles.......2007-07-17

The human diaspora across the planet has been Nature's most jarring event since the Cretaceous. Not since an asteroid slammed into the Caribbean 65 million years ago has anything exceeded what our species has done to upset the diversity of life. A mysterious group of animals, leftovers from that bolide, is revealing its secrets to enquiring scientists. The sea-going turtles, whose peregrinations around the world's oceans, are revealing new information about their enigmatic lives. Carl Safina followed the turtles and the people studying them to describe the findings and what they mean. This brilliant account reveals turtle life and the threats they endure.

After reminding us that only seven species of sea turtle remain, Safina visits the Caribbean to describe the great Leatherbacks coming ashore and nesting. Emerging through the night's surf, she finds a particular spot, one which may require more than one attempt, then with her back to the site, uses her rear flippers to blindly scoop out a hole to drop her eggs. Safina describes his wonder at her ability to do this without seeing the effect of her digging. Not all turtles manage this without mishap, and in a few cases the caring observers do the digging for her. In either case she drops her eggs, covers them with sand in a way to camouflage the spot, then returns to the sea. From the surf line, she swims away to some unknown destination. When the eggs hatch, the surviving young follow her to the sea. For the males, it's the last time they will feel land under their flippers.

The destination long remained a mystery until tagged turtles began appearing thousands of kilometres away. Safina joins a boat seeking Swordfish over the Canadian Grand Banks as a means of finding the giant turtles. Leatherbacks plying these waters are of Caribbean origin. Those females feed on Cannonball Jellyfish along the Carolinas before shifting north, later to cruise the vastness of the Atlantic to the Azores. It's a fabulous migration, but there are bigger surprises in store.

Along the eastern Pacific, Leatherbacks and other species were once common. Nature's most voracious predator has sharply reduced their number, chiefly by removing eggs just after they're laid. Villagers consumed or sold them in vast numbers. After a tour of a miniscule beach nesting site in Costa Rica, Safina meets with various students of turtle habits. He flies with Sandy Lanham and Laura Sarti to count turtles on the Mexican Coast, where lengthy beaches no longer experience turtle numbers that once was the case. To learn what has happened to them, Safina must cross the Pacific to Papua on the west end of New Guinea. With researchers working in the area with local people, he learns of ways poverty-stricken villagers can be employed to assist in saving turtles. Here, where humans might have first contacted the Leatherback after over 100 million years without a serious enemy, turtles exhibit their vulnerability to our predatory ways. The Pacific Leatherbacks are beset by those who don't even intend it. Longliner fishing boats string over 1.4 billion hooks per year on lines running to 90 kilometres length. The hooks snag flippers or are swallowed with lines. Turtles need air, just like us, but drown before the lines are brought up. Exact statistics are hard to come by, Scafina notes, but the evidence points to these boats as the most destructive force to turtles after egg poaching.

The author notes, however, that cures are available to help restore turtle populations. Beaches in some nations are declared "off limits" and patrolled. New hook designs that catch fish without snagging turtles have been developed, but need universal application - a difficult task with conservative fishermen. In Florida, shoreline communities have learned to douse lights to protect nesting sites - otherwise the hatchlings cannot find the sea. Incorporating local help has proven effective by showing how tourism and controlled collection can bring in more money than simple predation produces. In some species, there have been gains in new populations. Are the rising numbers significant? They apply only to certain species and locations. The greatest obstacle is the issue of turtle maturity, since breeding adults may take a human generation to start laying eggs. It means patience, dedication and continuing watchfulness on conditions are required. An elusive factor is what effect climate change will have on beaches and the sealife the turtles need to survive. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

5 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Compassionate Look.......2007-07-12

This is an amazing well written book about a fascinating subject. It is a story of hope for not just the turtles but for mankind.

5 out of 5 stars Informed conservation and hope for the future are the key.......2007-05-09

I finally had the chance to meet the author in person, after reading this and some of his other publications. I don't think there is anyone who is more serious yet also more full of hope than Carl about protecting our world's oceans and all beings dependent on them. Read this book and you will learn why it is important that we pay attention to the plight of animals that are endangered or which we humans are taking to the brink of extinction because we do not know all the facts. We have only one Earth and we need to preserve it for the generations to come. This book will bring you close enough to the life of these amazing relics from the dinosaur age to imagine you are right there on the beach, witnessing a clutch of eggs hatching, observing the hatchlings' attempts at survival. Learn about the migration of these animals, and follow their path with the help of state-of-the-art tools or old-fashioned hands-on research. The book focuses mainly on leatherbacks, but also deals with the greater picture of ocean conservation. An interesting read, a mixture of story-telling and scientific report which will keep any conservation-minded reader entertained as well as informed.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2002-03-08

I was fortunate to hear the author speak in the early 90s in my hometown of Syracuse, NY. He is an engaging storyteller. It was then that I discovered his book. The artwork in this edition is rich and appealing. The vignettes of each moon, combined with the illustrations, make an appealing canvas for young and/or exploring minds.

5 out of 5 stars Traditional View of Seasonal meanings.......2000-06-08

This book is an excellent work of Native American children's literature. Joseph Bruchac is a well-known Abenaki story-teller who profiles in this book the thirteen moons of the year, and profiles for each moon what is important about that season to different Native Nations. The artwork is a beautiful compliment to the story. If you are looking for a solid and sensitive look at inter-tribal stories for children, this is a great place to start!
