An easy to understand book on welding. Well laid out, and written in plain English

Ideal for the beginner, or as a refresher for the experienced welder.

This book is great resource for learning about different techniques for welding and cutting. It focuses on the equipment, safety, and skills and is written in a first person voice that makes the subject very approachable.

Rather than treating the subject as clinically as other welding books do, the author speaks from his own experience, and has plenty of notes about the details that characterize improving skill. The author provides anecdotes about disasters, but also reassures the reader that success is possible as long as they pay attention to what they're doing.

I came across this book in a bookstore along with a few other welding books. This one was by far the best as an introduction. It also provided enough knowledge quickly to be able to make informed decisions about what techniques and equipment would be appropriate for the task that got you interested in welding. Overall, this book is like having a shop teacher with you. The other welding books were like surface level surveys of the subject - sparse and full of disclaimers voiding themselves of responsibility if you blow up your garage.

I am very impressed with the info provided in this book, especially the charts ranging on info from; types of metal to best methods of how to weld it. Great info for the basic to intermediate welder.

Yes the info is a bit basic, but the only way to learn how to weld is to actually start doing it. I purchased and read this book to gain the basic knowledge, and even with everything explained, you do not understand what it is to weld until you try it and get the feel for it.

I had a previous edition of this book from the library and decided this was one I wanted on my shelf. I was worried by the fact that "Plasma Cutting" was up front and center in the new title, but relieved that hasn't taken over the book. In fact, despite the new title, this is the same old book (which is a good thing) with revisions.

I have had some (very limited) experience with oxy-acelylene and stick welding. I found this book very useful as a "refresher course".

As a recent newcomer to welding, I have discovered this book has taught me a lot of valuable information about the various techniques of the art of welding. The information supplied is well thought out and, combined with useful charts, facts and figures, this book is good enough for the would-be professional and home welder (or weldor!). Fantastic and comprehensive book.......2007-05-17

I like the Motorbooks Workshop books. They are all well written, have very illustrative color photos, and are well organized. This particular book is a handy supplement to the Welder's Handbook by Finch (same author, and some of the same information). While "Performance Welding" covers some more detail about the function and technique of many welding methods, the "Welder's Handbook" has a few projects thrown in with plans.

From this particular book I've learned a few tricks about jigging, and discovered a few things I didn't know. I made a few things out of sheet metal from duct work that one might find at the home hardware super duper mart. I tacked together a box made of this stuff which is all galvanized. A few days later I'm flipping through the book and learned that welding galvanized metal is bad - the ionized zinc forms a fume cloud of little nanoparticles that one shouldn't breathe. Extended contact leads to poisoning. Whoops. But I also learned that with proper ventillation, it's okay to weld galvanized metals but I should definitely be more careful.

One thing I've learned a lot about, which I only vaguely knew until now, is what to look for in a TIG welder. I learned with MIG and continue to use MIG, but the control of a TIG welder would help dramatically. The extensive discussion of TIG, including TIG methods for stainless, aluminum, and magnesium, is very helpful.

Also, I am now more interested in the other techniques that I passed by on my learning curve. For one, gas welding seems to have benefits that I overlooked. And I've also learned that much of the work I do could easily be accomplished by good ol' arc welding with better affordability.

If you are a beginning to intermediate welder, you will probably find this book useful.

Excellent book for those wanting to know the finer details of TIG and the types of work it is suited to. Also gives a good idea of what a really good weld should look like. Excellent photographs and nice layout. Overall, a good reference guide.

All about the author, not much about welding.......2000-11-30

If you wanted to know all about what a wonderful guy the author is and want to see photos of everything he has ever worked on by all means buy this book. If you want good information and clearly written procedures and saftey practices buy another. Here's one example: In a side note unter TIG welding, the author says "Be very careful when welding magneseum, as it can catch fire and not be extinguished by nornal means. Consult Chapter 12 on saftey for more information"

OK- turn to chapter 12...

and there is no information on what to do with a metal fire.

Before anyone tries welding mag engine blocks or wheels or anything they should know that if the part catches fire spraying a normal ABC fire extinguisher will not put it out, that it burns hot enoutgh to cause steel to catch fire, and that spraying water on it can cause an explosion as the fire can be hot enough to split water into hydrogen and Oxygen. This is not mentioned in the book. There are many more cases of the information you need shunted aside for personal anecdotes of the authors or the pages and pages of poor-quality filler photos that show off everything the author has ever worked on.

Don't buy it.

Very good over all.......1998-03-23

Aside from little details, a very practical book. His coverage of aluminum brazing omitted the fact that it has been in use since before WW2, and on many military aircraft. His aluminum welding and brazing references tend to mix, and might create confusion in choosing fluxes and fillers. The dangerous cobalt blue lenses he mentions are 40 yrs old, and have been superceded by TM Technologies' TM2000 lenses 10 yrs ago.

Over all, the book was excellent. Keep in mind that I am new to welding, so the book looked pretty good to me. Personally, I could care less about the history of welding and the blacksmith in the very begining of the book, but from there, Richard Finch shows the reader how to set up a good Farm Welding shop and also tells the reader what tools are needed. He too goes over saftey in the next Chapter. He then talks about the different farm welding processes such as oxyacetylene, arc (stick) and MIG (wire fed). Finch also covers how to identify metals on and around the farm. Chapter 5 covers oxyacetylene cutting, heating and plasma cutting. From there on, he pretty much goes into all of the processes I prevously mentioned only in much greater detail. He also concentrates on some "hard to weld" metals such a cast iron and aluminum. At the end of the book, he has writen a very good referance guide on where to buy welding tools and acessories.
Over all, this is a very good book, especally for the farmer who does not know too much about welding already.

Best Beginner's Book on Finches.......2003-08-28

Pay no attention to the bad review below, that is the viewpoint of someone prejdice to the carduelan finches which is basically for advanced finch hobbiests, breeders, and aviculturists. That review shows little interest in being helpful to new or prospective finch owners. Christa Koepff has written without a doubt, THE most helpful book on finch care for begginers. Easy to read, reference, and understand. I own and moderate FinchFriends, one of the best and most popular Finch groups on Yahoo! I very highly recommend this book to all my members.

Good Overview of Exotic Finches.......2002-02-11

There is great info for beginners here, including info on the care and breeding of exotic finches. However, there is not too much specific info on specific breeds.

The New Finch Handbook.......2001-12-13

This book should be re-named as "The Non-Singing Finches Handbook" because that is exactly what it is. It is a book for new Beginners, not for the advanced beginner, intermediate or expert breeder, because the content is superficial and out dated. Nothing is mentioned of singing birds such as the northern cardinal, rose breasted grosbeak, indigo bunting, siskins, goldfinches, linnets, etc. Instead you will find that the book has information on exotic finches such as firefinches, gouldians, gordon bleus, munias, grassfinches, javafinches, all those non singing birds that I do not keep and never will keep. Do not be misled by reviews that suggest this is a book for experts. It is far from the truth. I would not even buy this book if I am a new beginner, a much better deal is the Finches & softbilled birds by Henry bates and Robert Busenbark, and I also bought the Finches and Sparrows by Peter Clement (plse see my review on this book on Amazon).

Good Finch Book.......2000-04-15

This is a very good book, expecially for beginners. Lots of good basic information on the care an breeding of finches. Good species descriptions. However, my copy had many blank pages, and I did not get to read about some species, such as the Zebra Finch.

We are using an awful linguistics text for my graduate applied linguistics course: Linguistics for Non-Linguists: A Primer with Exercises (4th Edition) - see my review. Only everyone's online reviews of this linguistics handbook, Linguistics Terms and Concepts by Geoffrey Finch saved me.

The author is British - so he really knows English - in a way I think we are just approaching in the states, as in, it's in his DNA. And can you imagine a linguistics book that is a soothing and poetic read? Well you have found it. Finch loves the language and instructs us in it so tenderly that I can hardly imagine what life would have been like without it.
