Very informative for the new Maltese owner.........2005-09-06
I have found this book to be very informative for the new Maltese owner. I would recommend this book again.
I found this helpful.......2005-07-18
Vicki Abbott, having handled the top winning Maltese of all time and having over 30 years of experience in the breed, is the perfect expert on this breed and we are glad that she is finally sharing her experience with the public. This book provides a unique perspective on the breed, and will be very helpful to those just buying a puppy as a new addition to their family, to those who have bred, handled, and raised Maltese for years. I would highly recommend this book, it is easy to read and could even be read with your children when learning how to take care of your new Maltese puppy. Do not miss out on this book, it is the best Maltese book on the market, and I should know as I am a career librarian.
Thank you!
I Took This Back!.......2004-06-28
This book was an "impulse buy" from Borders Books and Music. When I got it home and read it, I was so disappointed that I returned it-something I rarely do. For lighter reading, The Essential Maltese by Howell Book House is much more informative; for the more serious fancier, The Complete Maltese by Nicholas Cutillo is a must-have. Don't waste your time and money on this book!
Thoroughly Enjoyed This Book.......2003-04-25
I have grown up with maltese all of my life. This book is very informative, and a great reference to have. Mrs. Abbott obviously spent a great deal of care and time writing this book. Truly a compliment to the breed! This book is on my coffee table!
Should have read the reviews!.......1999-12-03
I wish I had read the reviews on here before purchasing this book. I was greatly disappointed with it. It gives an excellent view of the author, her show dogs and her daughter but I felt it lacked information about the Maltese which is what I had hoped for in a book entitled, A New Owners Guide to Maltese. It gave very generic information in my opionion and was not that helpful. If you are looking for specific information on how to care for your new Maltese keep searching.

Tremendous Incite Into the Scottie!.......2003-03-02
The book provides tremendous incite into the Scottish Terrier thanks to the years Miriam Stamm has spent as a breeder, owner and handler of Scotties. In fact, her kennel, Amstamm, is one of the most important breeding kennels in our country for furthering and protecting the breed.
If you own, are interested in or about to acquire a Scottish terrier buy this book. You will not be disappointed.
This is a special book reflective of the Scottie as a special breed!
Disappointing.......2003-01-15
There is a tremendous amount of information in this book that's generic and could apply to any dog breed. I was looking for information specific to the Scottie and was largely disappointed. When I got to the page where the authors talk about when your dog gets to 55 lbs. size, my attention waned -- Scotties are around 20 lbs. full grown! In large portions of the book, you could change the title and pictures, and you would be reading about any dog breed. The book also appeared to be somewhat of an 'infomercial.' It's disappointing in a book of this nature when one is directed to pet products by brand name, which I think challenges the credibility and impartiality of the authors.
Very good!!!.......2002-12-03
Great information about the breed. This is not just another "one size fits all" dog book with the same doggy content and different breed photo on the cover. Scotties have an unique personality and need understanding.
Perfect book for start up.......2002-03-14
I appreciated very much this book as it offers a wide array of subject about the Scottish from the day it is chosen to feeding and training all in a simple and pretty way. A bible for any scottish new owner.
Wonderful!.......2000-06-11
This book is perfect for the beginning scottie owner, too. Not just the show person. It gives wonderful basic information on what to expect from living with a scottie.

Great for first-time dog owners.......2006-03-03
We've been reading this book to prepare ourselves for our new addition of a purebred Chowlet. The breeder recommended this book and it is full of all the typical things, but also contains LOTS of excellent information for the first-time dog owner such as Basic Training. Mr. Beauchamp helps you to get inside the head of a Chow Chow more than any book I've run across. I love his personal insights, such as when his US Army experience is drawn upon to explain the training style of a Chowlet. Expert information given with memorable explanations make this book a real winner.
Cautionary Tail..........2004-10-20
This is a great reference for a Chow owner, but even more useful for deciding whether a cute and cuddly, but stubborn Chow is the right breed for you. Chows are what their owners make them, and this book gives readers the tools and techniques to make them great companions.

For the love of Chows.......1999-12-09
What a wonderful little book! We had a Chow many years ago and were considering replacing our previous mixed breed dog (who died of old age) with a Chow puppy. After we read this book, and carefully considering the pros and cons, we couldn't wait to find the right breeder. Chows aren't for everyone but this book convinced us it was still the right breed for us. The book is a buy at 3 times the price.

Every new Bichon owner should have a copy.......1998-08-05
Mary Ellen and Gene Mills' new book should be a part of every new Bichon puppy owner's "preparing for the new puppy" kit. Gives the reader a thorough understanding of how the Bichon became what it is today and how its history affects the way the breed behaves. Lovely colored photos of all kinds of Bichons in "show clothes" and "play clothes."

Basic, Not Breed Specific.......2007-09-20
When I first got this book, I was extremely excited to learn about the "king of toys", but once I started reading it, I began to quickly lose interest in it. Why?
Well, for starters, this book contained very little about the breed itself, save the standard. Most of the information was for people who had never before owned a dog in their life. Since I own four dogs already and I am a dog groomer, I was expecting more from this book.
Frankly, I would only recommend this book to absolute novices who know nothing about feeding, exercise, or basic grooming. For anyone who has been in contact with a dog for 24 consecutive hours, I'd say skip this book and try one of the books in the Kennel Club or Terra Nova series.
Useful and well organized book.......2007-01-27
I was very happy with the how quickly I was sent the book. I was needing the information asap and the seller really impressed me. I have ordered other books from other sellers and have waited 4 weeks only to be told that they no longer have that book. I was impressed with the information and details in the book. It is very user friendly and one can quickly find the specific section needed with the great table of contents. I ordered the book for the training information and was happy with that as well. I would definitely recommend this book to other Min Pin owners.
Good MinPin book.......2006-05-31
It's a pretty good breed specific book. The book does include a valuable amount of information and most of the pictures are pretty attractive. I found the health section to be of particular use. Still, the presentation could have been a little better.
A great hand book for new owners of a Min Pin.......2001-03-11
Being a first time owner of a Min Pin I wanted to learn more about the breed. I bought several books about Min Pins and found "Miniature Pinschers" by Jacqueline O'Neil to contain all of the information I wanted at a very good price. The book contains information on the history of Min Pins, characteristics and standards, selecting a puppy, housebreaking and other training, feeding, Health and dental care, behavior, and caring for a Min Pin. It is more concise than another book that I bought but it contained the same information. It is full of beautiful colorful pictures. I highly recommend this book.

Good information, but index does not match page numbers.......2001-02-20
This book is informative, but the index does not match the page numbers so it is not possible to reference topics at-a-glance. I had to return it.

A New Owner's Guide to Great Danes (New Owner's Guide To...).......2006-02-28
My wife wants Great Danes and this book was a great place to get insight, and if she could handle these big, but gentle dogs. The book even as small as it is has every aspect of the Danes good and bad. Instead of one my wife now wants three! That's how informative this book is.
Excellent Owner's Guide.......2005-09-15
Jill Swedlow has written an excellent and informative book for the first-time Great Dane owner. Not only does it explain in great detail the responsiblities of the owner, but also tries to discourage those who may not be prepared for the demands of this "Gentle Giant." If you are purchasing a Great Dane for the first time, or just need a "refresher" on the care of your "best friend," this is the book for you. I always have my copy handy. I truly enjoyed it.
Very Informative.......2005-08-14
I am a wannabe Dane owner and have just been researching before I purchase - this book has a lot of good information for individuals in my position.
First time Dane Owner.......2000-02-05
Very well written book, easy to understand and you could tell written by someone with years of experience with this breed of dog. Examples of behavior set forth in this book I could easily see in my dogs. Great Help from Great Book.
Good, Compelling Breed Info but 1/2 Book Was Too General.......2000-01-07
I have been considering a Great Dane for a while now and want to read up before making that huge leap. Jill Swedlow's name was on 3 out of the 5 Great Dane books I found.
The part written by her about the breed is wonderful. It is clear she loves the breed but also points out why Danes are not the breed for everyone. She knows her stuff and conveys it in a manner that is friendly and compelling.
The main problem was that almost half the book is a generic dog guide. It relates to training and other issues, but it does *not* specifically address the problems with a dog that is as big as you are.
I hope Swedlow writes a comprehensive Dane book. I would buy it in a second.

A one-of- a-kind dog!.......2002-03-25
Art Perle obviously has a lot of experience and heart for English Springers. This is not a general book that would be appropriate for every dog from a Yorkie to a Fila Brasiliero. This man actually HAS and RAISES ESS. We were familiar with these dogs, having been owned by one for 11 years and having others in the family. My only complaint was too much paper spent in training ESS for the field. If I were interested in training my Spaniel for the field, I would buy a book specifically speaking to that sort of thing. But it's a great book and ooooohhh those puppy pictures!!!!
A New Owner's Guide to English Springer Spaniels.......2002-02-01
This is a very good basic book. The color pictures are beautiful.

If you lie down with marketers..........2001-08-04
Mr. Hartnagle's book contains a lot of excellent information, but is beset by two flaws that call into question the validity of his advice. First, the author seems to have done little research, relying instead on his obviously extensive knowledge of the Aussie breed. In one example he mentions electronic collars designed to stop a dog from barking, but says "personally I have not had experience with them". While this might be acceptable for a potential client in the office, it is not for the author of a book. The reader expects that research and cross-referencing have been done in all areas pertaining to the subject matter.
Far more serious, however, is the author's blatant promotion of a particular brand of dog chew toys. The entire chapter on "Dental Care" seems to have been included as an advertisement for this one company. The problem goes right down to the little registered trademark "r"'s and glossie product shots, and unfortunately calls into question the validity of everything he has said in the book. Where, exactly, does the paid promotion end and the impartial advice begin?
These two shortcomings unfortunately undermine what might otherwise have been a very useful text on the Australian Shepherd breed. As it stands, the new owner is advised to consider other sources of material on their pup.
A New Owner's Guide to Australian Shepherds.......1998-10-20
Written by noted breed authority Joseph Hartnagle, A NEW OWNER'S GUIDE TO THE AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD covers all aspects of caring for this purebred animal, including history, characteristics, feeding, grooming, health care, and becoming active in the sport of purebred dogs.
