Generic Information - A bit of a Letdown.......2003-07-10
If you are looking for generic information that would pertain to any breed, this book serves the purpose. There is basic information presented pertaining to the Brittany but I found little substance. If you are familiar with breed books from Barrons you understand what I mean. The Brittany is a unique, fiesty little dog and I was looking for a book that would delve into the temperment, development and point me in the right direction as far as training needs for my special companion. The information provided in this book does not concentrate on the Brittany and except for the pictures and brief chapters touching on the breed as a dual purpose companion/upland game hunter you can basically find the exact information on any breed in a Barrons book. I have trained Collies and Golden Retrievers and being a first time Brittany owner was hoping for a lot more information. You can go to the akc.org page and get the breed standard information for free. The book touches on hunting and retrieving but again, more in depth information can be found on most of the reputable breeder sites online. If you are looking to really get inside the breed, save your money, this book is nothing more than basic health care information that would pertain to any dog. A "complete owner's manual" it is not. I don't need to buy a book to tell me that my dog needs fresh water every day. The brief section on training says nothing about the "soft" temperment of this dog and the need for gentle positive reward methods and the risk of raising a timid fearful dog with problems that may be hard for the inexperienced owner to correct. If you are looking for a book with basic care instructions such as nail clipping, grooming, basic daily care and information on various potential health problems such as parasitic infection, explanations of the common diseases that we vaccinate our pups to be protected from, you will find the information in this book.
Bottom line- if you are new to dog ownership you may find the information useful and valuable. If you are an experienced dog owner, pass on this one.
Cute Pictures, Informative.......2003-03-17
When I put a down payment on a Brittany pup, I purchased this book in order to gain knowledge about the breed. My Brittany is now 3 years old and I continue to look at this book as a reference.
OK, with some errors.......2002-01-11
This book is OK, but contains a few errors. The first review is also wrong, tri-color is not common or acceptable in American Brittanys. That is a feature of a French Brittany, and the bloodlines are distinct. One thing the book fails to underscore sufficiently is how "hyper" a brittany is: if you have never been around a pointing dog, please take some time to do so before getting a brittany so it doesn't wind up being orphaned. They are sweet, biddable dogs, but need to run alot every day. This is particularly true of a well-bred britt, since it will come from lines that maintain field traits. Good luck.
New Brittany Owner.......2001-07-30
Excellent book for the new Brittany owner. I've bought 4 other books since I got my pup, and this one is the best. Plenty of general purpose info for any dog owner, plus lots of specifics about Brittanys. Training information is also provided.
The book was well written, easy to read and in depth........1998-06-23
Any one planning on purchasing a well mannered, friendly, active, loving, inteligent family oriented dog, should investigate Dan Rice's book first. They may find through this in depth and easy to read book that the loveable Brittany is for them. Note: Since the publication of this book, the AKC has changed the Brittany Spaniel's name to just Brittany. You may also like to know that the Brittany comes in other colors than just orange and white. Liver and white, is also common and although considered a discualification from shows, black and white or tri-colored are also commonly seen.

Great Book!!.......2001-12-17
This is one of the better training tools you'll ever buy. Roebuck take's you step by step from puppy through the second year. I refer to this book every time I start a new puppy. If you hunt upland birds this book is a must.
Excellent book.......2001-06-27
This is an excellent book by the late Ken Roebuck. I used Ken's advice to train my Springer and I am very pleased with the results. Ken writes the book with the beginner in mind.
The only drawback is that he doesn't give much useful information on how to train for blind retrieves.
A MUST HAVE for anyone training a HUNTING dog.......2000-07-03
I have read many books on dog training, and never before has anyone offered a plan so detailed or as simple to follow as Kenneth Roebuck. His insight into how a dog thinks and how we can use that to our advantage in training is at once ordinary and astounding. Skip all the popular training methods of the moment and use this one. You will never raise a better gun dog.
A great training guide from begining to end........1998-11-22
This book takes you through the selection of and training of a gun dog using the late Kenneth Roebuck's methods. This book outlines the use of both positive and negative reinforcment to produce a quality hunting companion. This is a great resource for the man wanting to train his own dog, and if I could only have one training reference, this would be it.

second edition-same book as first.......2007-08-19
I purchased the second edition since I have the first. Unfortunately, unless you are into the recent changes in the cocker spaniel field trials and field bred cockers, there is little or no changes. It is practically the same book. Since the first edition can be found in hardcover, and is a top gundog book, I would recommend buying that one unless you are interested in the cocker spaniel as a field dog.
Must Read for All Flushing Spaniel Owners.......2005-06-17
This is the main flushing spaniel "handbook" that we send off with all our puppy clients. Mr. Spencer has a wonderful knack for spanielling and explains the ins and outs of a working American spaniel, minus the politics, in a simple manner that even our British cousins can appreciate. It is a book that will never go out of style and should sit on the shelf of every flushing spaniel owner's bookshelf.
Excellent, great help in training.......2004-07-26
This is a must have book for all spaniel, or hope to be spaniel owners. It is exceptionally easy to follow and even fun to read. Anyone with some time, patience and this book can train a very good dog. The first part will help anyone who is undecided on which spaniel would be best for them.
Marked by especially straightforward instructions and advice.......2003-08-09
Now in an updated second edition, HUP! Training Flushing Spaniels The American Way is a practical, user friendly, and very highly recommended instructional guide written by James B. Spencer, an award-winning dog and outdoor writer with over 500 magazine articles to his credit. From an examination of different types of flushing Spaniel breeds; to training a Spaniel from puppyhood in various retrieval and hunting techniques; to working certificate tests, and much, much more, HUP! Training Flushing Spaniels The American Way is marked by especially straightforward instructions and advice, based on years of professional experience.
Best spaniel hunt book ever.......2002-04-14
I began training English Cocker Spaniels in the field some 14 yrs ago. A friend turned me onto this book and it has become my bible for training flushing spaniels. It is very common sense an even if you have never trained a spaniel before it is easy to follow. It also has a wonderful section on each breed which is of great help to those wanting to choose a spaniel hunting companion. Jim Spencer has made it easy for anyone to train a hunting companion in the field. Thanks Jim.

3 Cheers for Liz!.......2005-01-14
This book is wonderful. It's simple to read and I've had great success following the training techniques. Liz teaches the importance of training your cocker with a firm, but loving hand; as well as how to train your cocker to have manners and do some pretty impressive tricks! Knowing how to work with my dog, has given us a wonderful and fun relationship. I bought a few other books on Cockers, but this one by far is my favorite!
Nice tips on how to TRAIN.......2002-12-08
You won't be confused when you get to the training part. The book explains the stuff well, and at the same time the pictures of Cockers are cute and colorful. My friend read this, and since our friend lives in our house, we will have tips on how to train the best dog in the world, the COCKER SPANIEL!!!

An ideal first book regarding the English Springer Spaniel........1999-03-07
An interesting and informative book touching on all aspects of the English Springer Spaniel, be it in the field, in the show ring, or as a family pet. It also features a super basic training section as well as an entire chapter devoted to the springers health and well being. This was our first book regarding English Springer Spaniels and it assisted us greatly regarding the choice of Ivy, our now 14 month old black and white Springer Spaniel. This book handles the basics and more, and we would rate it as a perfect companion reference.
Customer Reviews:
Not very comprehensive.......2005-08-22
Although the book has a lot of nice pictures, much of the information is basic. I thought it was not very comprehensive. The book itself is tiny, and you could easily read it cover to cover in half an hour or less. I was not impressed. Save your money and go with a more complete book on English Springer Spaniels, like "The English Springer Spaniel", also sold on this website.
How to train your english springer spaniel.......2003-06-22
this is a very good book. it has a lot of usefull tips. we just got this book the other day and every day since then we've been reading this book. Even if you get tired of reading the pictures are very fun to look at.
A Great Guide for Springer Owners.......2000-03-06
Ms. Palika's easy to understand description of the English Springer makes for informative reading. A high energy and active breed, it's most important that owners teach their Springers basic obedience and manners. Easy to understand steps in this book will help owners to teach their dogs what is to be expected of them, and to have fun with the training. This is particularly a wonderful guide for the first-time Springer owner. Read and learn!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent quality colour photos.......1999-12-21
Excellent book for a general overview of the breed. I would recommend it to anyone with either a general interest in the breed or a specific interest. The colour photos are of an incredible quality and give the newcomer especially an idea as to the varying colours of the Tibetan Spaniel.

Excellent Book For Anyone Training A Flushing Dog.......2006-07-12
This book is well written and laid out in a way that makes sense. It's a step by step type of book that anyone can follow. I've read several books on training spaniels to hunt and retrieve. This is one of the better ones. I've owned and bred Field Bred English Springer Spaniels for the past 18 years and recommend this book to anyone with a pup to train. This was one of the first books I read on training spaniels and is still one of the best.
excellent.......2005-08-26
The best book I have read on training gundogs. The author shows you how to recognise your own faults when training a young dog.
Should be read by all parents?

guide to owning a cocker spaniel.......2002-05-05
This book aritcle didnt have the informationtion that I was searching for. My Dog is not for show and Ive had her nuetered so she isnt for breeding. She is a pet for my three grandsons and I was looking for in formation on the dogs health problems, such as cataracs, hip didplacement and why do they get the gunk in the corners of their eyes and the best way to train my spaniel to obey me
This article is designed mostly for breeders and show dogs
Not as informative as I had hoped.......1999-02-23
After recently purchasing a cocker spaniel puppy, I was looking for a book that would give an insight to temperament, behavior, and possible health concerns of cockers. This book touched very briefly on these subjects and focused more on details for owning a show-dog. Since our cocker is purely a house pet this information did not interest me. There was very little in terms of the insight of understanding cocker spaniels and the best way of training your cocker. There are lots of cute pictures of all the different colors cockers come in, but other than that I didn't get much information that I was seeking from this book.

A "must have" book for all potential Sussex owners.......2003-07-23
purchased Mr. Lewis' book after our family decided to look for a puppy. I read his book cover to cover, many times before I was able to get our first of 3 Sussex. It is a thorough and informative book about this little known spaniel breed. His coverage of the history of the breed is facinating. I have not found as complete source of Sussex information anywhere else. My sister has purchased the book several yrs. ago and has also just purchased her first Sussex Spaniel. I highly recommend reading it prior to looking for a dog.
Sussex Spaniel by John Robert Lewis, Jr........2000-05-20
This book is the bible for Sussex Spaniel owners. It's also the only book on Sussex in print in the U.S. If you are seriously considering purchasing a Sussex you ought to buy and read this book before contacting a breeder. It will help you evaluate if you are willing to go through the process of buying and raising this rare breed and give you the basis to ask intelligent questions. Lewis' book is chock full of wonderful full-colour photographs that show Sussex at all ages of the two body types. These are beguiling dogs and the pictures will steal your heart. Lewis provides a through history of the breed both in England and the U.S. Like the Bible, Lewis spends a large number of pages on the "begats." This is very useful information for a novice breeder but a snooze for pet owners. Lewis also provides useful, general information for new puppy owners. He suggests specific toys that Sussex universally enjoy. My only criticism is the section on health. Lewis glosses over the real health concerns of Sussex owners. Sussex are a healthy breed with few problems but there are serious problems which occasionally occur. It would have been nice if the book provided information about how to recognize the early symptoms of these health problems. One final fun fact: One of the photos in the book identifies the dog as a Sussex but it's a Field Spaniel! After reading the book you should have no problem spotting the mistake.
