Book Description

Praise for the First Edition of Design and Analysis of Clinical Trials
"An excellent book, providing a discussion of the clinical trial process from designing the study through analyzing the data, and to regulatory requirement . . . could easily be used as a classroom text to understand the process in the new drug development area."
-Statistical Methods in Medicine
A complete and balanced presentation now revised, updated, and expanded
As the field of research possibilities expands, the need for a working understanding of how to carry out clinical trials only increases. New developments in the theory and practice of clinical research include a growing body of literature on the subject, new technologies and methodologies, and new guidelines from the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH).
Design and Analysis of Clinical Trials, Second Edition provides both a comprehensive, unified presentation of principles and methodologies for various clinical trials, and a well-balanced summary of current regulatory requirements. This unique resource bridges the gap between clinical and statistical disciplines, covering both fields in a lucid and accessible manner. Thoroughly updated from its first edition, the Second Edition of Design and Analysis of Clinical Trials features new topics such as:
* Clinical trials and regulations, especially those of the ICH
* Clinical significance, reproducibility, and generalizability
* Goals of clinical trials and target population
* New study designs and trial types
* Sample size determination on equivalence and noninferiority trials, as well as comparing variabilities
Also, three entirely new chapters cover:
* Designs for cancer clinical trials
* Preparation and implementation of a clinical protocol
* Data management of a clinical trial
Written with the practitioner in mind, the presentation assumes only a minimal mathematical and statistical background for its reader. Instead, the writing emphasizes real-life examples and illustrations from clinical case studies, as well as numerous references-280 of them new to the Second Edition-to the literature. Design and Analysis of Clinical Trials, Second Edition will benefit academic, pharmaceutical, medical, and regulatory scientists/researchers, statisticians, and graduate-level students in these areas by serving as a useful, thorough reference source for clinical research.

5 out of 5 stars Most complete reference on the topic.......2006-09-07

I own several books on clinical trials and this one is my favorite. It is biblical in its treatment of the topic and always seems to contain what my other books don't.

There are a few strengths that are particularly worth pointing out:
1) Makes many references to regulatory guidelines.
2) Excellent coverage of the various trial designs.
3) Good sample size chapter.
4) Several chapters on how to practically implement a trial.

Other options include:
-Piantodosi (Clinical Trials: methodologic perspective): my second favorite, not as comprehensive as Chow and Liu
-Freidman and DeMets (Fundamentals of Clinical Trials): a bit too superficial but very well written
-Pocock (Clinical trials: practical approach): a bit dated and superficial

Oracle Financials play a big role in the information infrastructures of many companies, and a solid understanding of that environment can pay very large dividends in consulting work. Oracle Certified Professional Financial Applications Consultant Exam Guide readies you for the four exams (two core and two elective) that make up the Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) Financial Applications Consultant track. The book tackles the exams one at a time, explaining what you need to know--conceptually, as well as in terms of software details--about the Oracle Financials environment. The exercises help drive information into your long-term memory, and each chapter is peppered with review questions that help prepare you for what's on the exams.

This is more than a test-prep book, however, and it's likely that you'll be happy with it even if you have no plans to pursue a formal Oracle certification. The large and complicated concepts that underlie Oracle Financials are explained, a difficult job that the book does well. It's also careful to maintain a focus on business objectives, instead of on characteristics of the software itself. One section explains the process of creating a blanket purchase order, properly accounting for the purchases that are made against it, and then releasing individual purchase authorizations under the order's terms. The index is extensive and detailed, so finding the documentation that you need is rather easy. --David Wall

Topics covered: The Oracle Financials suite of applications, with a bit of a bias toward the four Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) Financial Applications Consultant tests. The details of the material that's on the Financial Management, Applied Technology, Procurement, and Order Fulfillment exams all appear here, which means that you can use this as a general-purpose Oracle Financials reference, and not only as a study helper.

    Book Description

Make a smart career move and begin enjoying all the rewards of OCP Financial Applications Consultant certification! This Oracle-endorsed study guide offers a complete preparation system geared to help you pass your exams with flying colors! Bonus CD-ROM contains more than 300 interactive practice exam questions.

    Book Description

This text is designed for a hydrologist, civil, or agricultural engineer. The text presents an integrated approach to hydrology, using the hydrologic/system or control volume as a mechnism for analyzing hydrologic problems.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Text.......2006-01-04

I use this text to teach a first-semester graduate class for civil engineers who are targeting a graduate degree with emphasis on hydrology. I've been using the text for nearly ten years. It might be a little advanced for undergraduates, but certainly is in the grasp of advanced undergraduate students.

Applied Hydrology is the text I wanted way back when I was in graduate school. Chow was still alive but had not finished the book. I was introduced to his writing in his open-channel hydraulics text, which I thought (and still think) is the best. Applied Hydrology was assembled posthumously by Maidment and Mays, who did a good job putting together whatever remained of Chow's work. I'm very glad they undertook the process and published the work. It's an important text for my discipline specialty.

Part 1 of the text covers the basics and does it well. This material is timeless and will not change much as new research comes available. Part 2 covers analysis and shows its age, just a bit. Unit hydrographs and lumped-flow routing are old technologies and while updates are inevitable, the basic technologies will not change. Chapters 9 and 10 are a bit dated as substantial work has been done over the last 15 years. They're still good, but require supplementation. Chapters 11 and 12 again contain great fundamentals but the technology is changing. The theory of linear moments (L-moments) is working its way into hydrologic statistics for fitting distributions to datasets. Furthermore, there is a trend toward using resistant statistics (median, inter-quartile range, and others) for description of the statistics of hydrologic datasets. Part 3 on hydrologic design is still good, but is also showing its age just a little. Again, the basics are great and well-explained. However, as new data become available and new analyses of those data are accomplished, new interpretations also become available. This is true especially with precipitation atlases and the estimation of n-year precipitation events, and hence n-year hydrologic events.

My observations are not an indictment of Applied Hydrology; it remains my favorite engineering hydrology textbook and I will continue to use it to teach engineers about hydrology. In my opinion, this is the best upper-undergrauate/graduate engineering hydrology text available. Like all textbooks, it is beginning to show its age because technology is not stagnant. But its descriptions of core concepts and the application thereof remains top notch.

5 out of 5 stars a must for water resource engineers and students.......2003-09-24

I took a hydrology course taught by one of the authors (Larry Mays) using this book. Advantages of this book lies in (1) the arrangement of the contents is very logic-oriented, you don't feel aburpt jump from one chapter to another one, (2) the theory addressed in the text is concise, easy to read and understand, (3) the examples used to illustrate the theories are very correlated. Other books may be good too, however, in terms of "hydrology" alone, I haven't seen a better one. It is a useful reference for your understanding of hydrologic design manual, creteria.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent hydrology text.......2002-11-06

This is a well-written and fairly comprehensive textbook for the science and engineering of hydrology, suitable for undergraduate and graduate courses. I used it for a class taught by one of the authors (David Maidment), so it was a natural fit for the class, but I believe that any competent teacher could make good use of it. The example problems are useful and the explanations are clear.

    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK.......2001-07-30

A must have reference for those of you guys in the field of Applied Hydrology. If you are tackling the task of modeling some particular hydrologic process, you will find the detailed descriptions and flow charts very handy. Step by step derivations of equations, excellent referencing and convenient chapter setup makes this book a first-to-look reference. Although it is a 1988 print, you will hardly feel it unless you really dig into details like flow routing in meandering rivers.

I believe you will enjoy reading this book...

    4 out of 5 stars good book.......2000-05-04

This is a great book on hydrology, the author is very famous in both hydrology and hydraulics area.

    Book Description

Sample size calculation plays an important role in clinical research. It is not uncommon, however, to observe discrepancies among study objectives (or hypotheses), study design, statistical analysis (or test statistic), and sample size calculation. Focusing on sample size calculation for studies conducted during the various phases of clinical research and development, Sample Size Calculation in Clinical Research explores the causes of discrepancies and how to avoid them. This volume provides formulas and procedures for determination of sample size required not only for testing equality, but also for testing non-inferiority/superiority, and equivalence (similarity) based on both untransformed (raw) data and log-transformed data under a parallel-group design or a crossover design with equal or unequal ratio of treatment allocations. It contains a comprehensive and unified presentation of statistical procedures for sample size calculation that are commonly employed at various phases of clinical development. Each chapter includes, whenever possible, real examples of clinical studies from therapeutic areas such as cardiovascular, central nervous system, anti-infective, oncology, and women's health to demonstrate the clinical and statistical concepts, interpretations, and their relationships and interactions. The book highlights statistical procedures for sample size calculation and justification that are commonly employed in clinical research and development. It provides clear, illustrated explanations of how the derived formulas and/or statistical procedures can be used.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A reasonable reference book, but my expectations were higher.......2007-08-08

I am a PhD statistician working in a pharma company. My overall impression about this book is that it is not a handbook for use on a daily basis for clinical trialists. I expected the book to be more insightful about sample size calculations. Examples are very artificial, not taken from real-life.

The book has an academic flavor, however the intended audience is clinical trials practicioners. It would be much better to start each chapter with a couple of strong examples, then description of the methodology, and finally sample size calculations.

I think this book needs a lot of improvement before it can be used as a good reference

3 out of 5 stars This *could* have been great..........2006-04-25

At first browse, this book looks a bit like one of Julius Bendat's excellent texts on time series analysis: dense in formulas, but rewarding the wade.

And then I tried to actually _work through_ their examples. A formula-rich book is NO place for typos.

I don't mind when the text uses "lossed" for "lost;" I can quickly figure out what was meant. I resent having to do forensics to rebuild what formulas and/or results I should have seen in the examples.

That three-star rating reflects two things: the potential this book could have had, and my expectation that sooner or later there will be an ERRATA listing that helps sort this beast out.

    5 out of 5 stars Just Borrowing a Copy.......2007-08-29

I am a grad student in hydraulic engineering at LSU, currently borrowing a copy of this book from my advisor while he is on sabbatical. It is incredible. I wish I could afford to buy even a very old used copy of this text.

McGraw-Hill should seriously consider printing this title again.

5 out of 5 stars The Classic Text.......2006-01-04

In the fall semester of 1980, I sat a class in the civil engineering department of the University of Missouri--Rolla on open channel hydraulics. The instructor used Chow's Open-Channel Hydraulics as the text. I was a dual-enrolled senior at the time and this course counted toward my graduate degree.

If it's possible to fall in love with an engineering textbook, I did -- with this one. I spent a lot of time with the text, both as a student, then later as a professional, then later yet as a teacher of young civil engineers. This has to be one of the best-written textbooks I've owned, ever. The writing is clear, lucid, and precise. Chow really knew his open channels, and it shows.

The text is clearly dated, hence the "classic reissues" monogram. The text contains material that is no longer useful, except in a historic sense. Much of the material presented on backwater-curve analysis is no longer used. Our computers are adept at applying the direct-step and standard-step methods (both topics are well-treated in the text), so the hand-computation methods are outdated. Furthermore, the technologies presented in the chapters describing unsteady flow in open channels are also dated because we have numerical computation methods more sophisticated than those available in the late 1950's.

Those topics are NOT what makes this an excellent textbook. It is the clear descriptions and derivations of fundamental principles that make Chow a classic. That material is timeless and remains the emphasis of my personal teaching of young engineers. Technologies change; fundamentals do not. For that reason alone I continue to use and recommend Chow's Open-Channel Hydraulics to my students and colleagues.

If I could have only one reference on open channels, this would be it. It is the book I return to and refer to whenever I need to know something about fundamental open channels. When I need newer technology, I go to the journal literature. But when I need to teach or review the fundamentals, I pick up my copy of Chow.

I want to affirm the comments of another reviewer that Chanson's review is subject to bias--he is the author of another open-channels text.

    5 out of 5 stars A Classic for a Reason.......2001-08-08

A professor teaching my Open Channel Flow class stated that this book is widely regarded as "The Bible" of open channel hydraulics. After reviewing a library copy, I was so impressed with it that I bought one for myself. The text is written in a clear, concise language that is sorely lacking in other texts. His chapter on energy and momentum principles is especially good. Sure, it's an old text (1959) but 98% of this book is still relevant. There's a reason it still in print; engineers love it and continue to buy it!

Incidentally, I found the review of this book by Hubert Chanson to be at best, disingenuous. He rates the book with only one star (every other reviewer gave it 5 stars) while at the same time recommending a "better" text that he fails to mention he authored and is out of print! There's one in every crowd.

    5 out of 5 stars A must-have for hydraulic engineers.......2000-08-14

This is the foundational text of modern open-channel hydraulics. All engineers should have a copy. The only negative review on this page (or that I have ever heard) is by an author (Hubert Chanson) of books which compete with this one.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2000-05-18

This is superb text, a standard for over 40 years and for justcause. The explanations are clear and easy to understand--providingexplanation of theory, for example momentum versus energy and confusion between the two.

Discover how the right nonperishables and a little creative heat can turn into renowned chef Robin Robertson's savory Almost-Instant Black Bean Chili, Pantry Pasta Salad, and Fire-Roasted Blueberry Cobbler, among many others.

Apocalypse Chow! is a valuable resource for anyone who feels (or maybe really is) powerless in the kitchen but still in search of culinary delight.

        5 out of 5 stars Apocalypse Chow.......2007-09-07

This is a great book for areas that are subject to natural disasters or electrical blackouts where you might have to rely on one-burner cooking. If you like cooking and eating good food, this is a great book even if the lights do stay on. I gave my sister this book along with the Storm Gourmet and she liked Apocalypse Chow the best.

        1 out of 5 stars HUH?.......2007-07-07

This book is for the new age, chi-chi. I am a fairly literate man, many of the items mentioned in the book are foreign to me. What is a mandoline?
A mezzaluna? A sudare? Does one need a zester in a calamity? What are basmati pilafs, panchrattan, guanabana and giardiniera? Why would I need to stock several versions of artichoke parts? And of course being closer to a carnivore than anything else, where's the beef? Vegetarian cooking is not something I'd ordinarily do while my faculties are intact. I should have been given that option.
This book was represented to be a help for the average person to smooth over the trauma of adverse conditions through cooking. My take on it is that the this book will be fuel. One of the few good tips gleaned from this book.

4 out of 5 stars Disaster prep can be fun.......2007-06-14

I admit, I bought this book because of the funny title! I haven't tried any recipes yet. The recipes, though vegetarian, look delicious and simple; and I admire the author's approach--why spend 2 weeks living on Spam and cold baked beans, when, with a little forethought, you can be the envy of your block (though I don't think I'd let 'em know we were chowing down in this fashion! Could get ugly!)? You could add canne dmeats to many of the recipes, as well. I particulary enjoyed the author's sense of humor--I've read many disaster prep books, and never encountered humor in any of them. Fave quotes: (regarding "astronaut"/freeze-dried meals)"If your kids are very young, or simply just not too bright, you could tell them you're ordering take-out from Mars" and, "...spending all day slaving over a hot butane stove." Also, the entries on dealing with insurance companies, and the waiting game they play are fun, as well. Most books don't touch upon this, and the crushing boredom and friction that occur when the power has been off for a week.

4 out of 5 stars Witty resource on how to eat well when the lights go out.......2006-12-15

This witty book, co-authored by spouses Jon and Robin Robertson, provides a sense of how one might eat well "when the power goes out." "Apocalypse Chow" provides much useful information, in the event that natural disasters like hurricanes or pandemic flu knock out power, water supplies, and so on.

Concrete suggestions abound, such as the need to acquire some sort of cooking system (camping stove, gas grills, and so on), the need to stow away adequate water, check lists of kitchen tools needed in case the power goes off, what to buy for one's pantry. Neat side items: a five-day menu (pages 61-64), as a part of what they call the "five day wine box" (the authors argue that you can put a set of five days worth of meals for 4 people in a wine box).

For whom they refer to as "the truly lazy" (page 68), they note the availability of MREs (Meals Ready to Eat), and provide places where one can purchase these (akin to the military's chow for combat conditions), freeze dried meals (and, again, places where one can order these), "Supermarket Ready to Eats" (food in cardboard boxes, like macaroni and cheese, that store well and are easy to make). In addition, they encourage canned foods that last a long time.

This brief, easy to read, and witty volume is a useful resource for those concerned about disasters (whether natural or manmade) that might disrupt normal access to food and water, power, and so on.

        2 out of 5 stars Highbrow.......2006-08-26

More for when the power goes out. Not a good book if you have to evacuate

3 out of 5 stars Easy to Enjoy.......2007-10-11

The Melanie Travis series has been fun to follow and enlightening with regard to the details of the "show dog" world - from a "real" person's perspective (Melanie)with the bonus of fun mysteries. This book was fine for what it offered, but was not one of the more challenging mysteries in the series. It did update the reader on the lives of the main character and her family - and added a twist to info. on the dog world - creating and advertising a "new" dog food (not obviously an interesting pursuit, but essential to this plot). I think the author had a good time writing this book and offered an easy read - for dog and mystery lovers.

        3 out of 5 stars A quick read.......2007-08-20

The true appeal here was dog-related. All the dog information was fascinating and her descriptions of her herd of Poodles (particularly Faith) were priceless.

Unfortunately I question the mode of murder. At the risk of spoiling the plot, I wonder why someone would push Larry down the stairs while he was holding the (hopefully) winning dog - and risk injuring said winning dog (particularly considering who the murderer is finally revealed to be and why she considered Yoda the winner). And if he wasn't holding the dog when pushed, then why didn't the murderer pick up Yoda after doing the pushing? I just couldn't make it work in my mind. (As an aside, I noticed the gender of the dog kept changing throughout the book - first referred to as she, then he, then she again.)

And the constant references to pregnancy were just grating on my nerves. How Melanie could put up w/ the constant intrusions into her privacy (and her uterus is about as private as it gets!!) is just unbelievable. Good grief. If someone hounded a friend or sister like that I'd hope they'd reply with, "If you're so determined to have another child in this family, why don't YOU adopt one? I'll gladly supply you with a letter of reference." Hopefully once this kid gets born, all such intrusive references will be a part of the past.

This was my first exposure to her work. I'm looking forward to further novels full of dog stories.

4 out of 5 stars Another Good Romp With Melanie and Company.......2007-01-10

Each of the Melanie Travis books takes you to her delightful life in Greenwich. The author quickly gets the reader involved in the world of dog shows and sleuthing.

Unfortunately, the books are such quick reads that you are left out in the cold again, and craving the next in her series.

Hurry up and write more, Ms. Berenson.

4 out of 5 stars Charming characters make this mystery really enjoyable.......2006-11-09

Melanie Travers can't quite bear to disappoint her son when he enters her poodle in a pet food competition and she becomes a finalist, but she doesn't really want to win. Which makes her completely unlike the other finalists. Every one of them seems intent on winning at any cost. When one of the contestants (the owner, not the pet) falls to his death on the stairs of the pet food company, Melanie finds herself in the familiar position of having to investigate what might be an accident but certainly looks like--murder.

Investigating crime is far from Melanie's major job, however. Although school may be out for the summer, she's still getting adjusted to her recent marriage, putting up with relatives urging her to start producing more children, showing her standard poodle at dog shows, and jumping through the many hoops that the contest judges have set up.

Author Laurien Berenson continues her Melanie Travis series with another look into the world of dog shows, and the unusual and colorful people who make these shows their life. These characters, especially Melanie, her aunt Peg, and gay groomer Terry bring the story to life and keep the reader interested as Melanie puts herself in dangerous situations to discover exactly what happened to the unpleasant Larry--and whether she just might be the next to fall victim.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this book!.......2006-10-06

Everybody needs to laugh and everybody needs to think and this book makes you pee your pants laughing while trying to solve a mystery.
My hats off to Ms Berenson for making me turn the pages of this book faster than the last 4 books that I've recently read.
I highly recommend any of the entertaining Melanie Travis Mysteries.
My sincere hope is that the author is working on the next installment as I type this!
