An Excellent Guide.......2006-11-03
I am a veterinary assistant, but by no means an expert on diabetes in dogs. My heart sank when one of my dogs was diagnosed with diabetes with an initial glucose level of 570. I was shocked, since she was neither overweight, was on a high fiber diet, plenty of exercise and is a mutt. We were in good shape.
As soon as she was diagnosed with diabetes I purchased this book and have to say it was a God sent. It took away my fears of her not being able to live a normal , active, happy life. It is very reassuring to know that Caroline Levin is a registered nurse and most of all has had the experience of having had a dog with diabetes. She has done all the research for us with dogs with Diabetes, Panceatitis, Cushing's Disease etc.. This book is so comprehensive that it answered all of my questions.
My dog is happy and active and with a few lifestyle changes we are in good shape again.
Thank you Ms. Levin for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Having just been diagnosed this year with diabetes, my beloved Coco and I were struggling with the newness of our changed routine, diet, schedule etc. This book helped educate me and put it all in perspective and find the right program for Coco.
Understanding led to action which led to strength and control of our new situation. A must read for all canine diabetes families.

One of a kind........2006-07-06
Finally a book that doesn't talk down to the reader and gives us the information about our dogs that will help us understand their physiology and hence make better decisions conerning their well being.
However, I do agree with the reviewer who complained that there should have been an additional section devoted to various cancers and perhaps how to avoid them.
It can be read straigh through or as a reference as needed.
I also like the old cover better with a cute girl holding a puppy. This new one sucks. But that's just me.

the first dog health book I bought, because I thought it covers all I need to know... not a bad book, great paper, has many good photos and quite informative even doesn't cover all... yet, I find it's too boring and difficult to read for ordinary people (like me), use too much difficult vocabularies, if this book is designed just for vetenarian's consume then fine, but if for all level of dog owners, some of them might just browse the pics, read a while then leave it on the table... Dr. Lowell Ackerman is definitely a great doctor but also definitely need practice in writing a readable book...

This is a very informative book with great illustrations. Just one thing missing, CANCER. Many of us with dogs, especially with older dogs, need all the information we can get on cancer. I'm still looking for the perfect dog health book.

Finally, a useful book for the layman.I was very disappointed in the layout (editing) of the book. The reader must fumble through the book to find tables for medications to treat various conditions. The medical advice is sound and very useful. Revamp the book with an index that is usable.

Bailey has just become the newest and possibly the most important member of our family........2005-11-19
Back in February of this year we lost Binki,a Lhasa Apso cross Poodle after 17 wonderful years.Prior to that we had a Dachshund,Max, who spent 14 years with us as our 3 children grew up.So,as we are now seniors,our children are all married,and now that we have 8 Grandchildren;we faced the facts and felt our dog owning days were probably behind us.
That is what we thought,we found Bailey,she has now joined the two of us and getting a new puppy was one of the best decisions we've ever made.She is a Yorkshire Terrier cross Teacup Poodle.She will be small,about 7 pounds,doesn't shed and has all the features of what we could want in a dog.She is 12 weeks old,we've had her over a month,and I believe she finds us acceptable.By this point, you can see Bailey is a pet,a member of the family is more like it,and we have no intrest in breeding or showing.Maybe I should qualify that bit about showing.We do a great amount of showing as a matter of fact,everyone in the neighbourhood has fallen in love with her and we can't complete a 10 minute walk in less than a half hour while showing her off and making friends with every person and dog we meet.
We,as the case of a lot of people who have dogs,tended to operate by trial and error in raising them,heck,didn't it work with the kids? Anyway ,I saw this book and thought maybe I could learn something.You've heard the old saying "You can't teach old dogs new tricks"There is simply no truth to that.I am learning lots and there is much more to be gleaned fom this book.
The book is only 160 pages and covers everything you could or should want to know about Yorkies.It will also be kept nearby for reference in the years ahead.
The book discusses how intelligent this breed is,and we have already seen signs of that.If there is anything that I might fault the book for,it is this.I am a very avid reader,but very disappointed that Janet has given absolutely no attention at all on helping me with teaching Bailey to read.I have already been reading to her,she obviously comprehends,nods at the right time,and even dozes off if the story gets too dull.I am convinced she could easily be taught to read,but for that,I guess I'm on my own.
Like I've already mentioned,and so have a couple of the other reiewers,the book covers a lot about breeding and showing in competitions,but that should not deter you from getting it.All the same principles apply,and your little friend is just as important to you and those around you as a Best of Show is to its owner and the show Judges.
Bailey is a great addition to our family and we intend to give her a lot of happiness and I know she will return any love many times over and that doesn't even take into account the companionship we'll all enjoy.
Oh yeah, one other thing,Carol touches on the cost one takes on with getting a dog;but remember this;
"All it takes is money to buy a fine dog,but it takes love
to make it wag it's tail."

Being a new owner, I wanted a more practical book on the breed.
I found the author to be focused on the competitive aspect and
"quality" breeding lines. For someone who was looking at entering dog shows, this would be a useful book. For me, who
was looking for some insight at the pet level, it lacked practical applications.

As a breeder and exhibitor of this fine breed. I recomend this book to all perspective westie owners. What a better way to explain what a versital dog this little breed can be. From therapy dogs right on to working in the feild, Ms. Martin does a great job letting the informed buyer be aware of all the attributes this breed can bring to any home.

First time and old time owners alike will love this book. It gives a wonderful overview of the West Highland White Terrier. It includes good puppy selection and training tips as well as breed health care, grooming, and temperment information. We particularly like her coverage of the breed's versatile involvement in canine activities such as agility and tracking. It is also a good book for people who are trying to decide if a Westie is right for them. We recommend Ms. Martin's book to everyone who obtains a Westie from us.

Once you have bought this book you will refer to it all the time. A lot of Professional breeders encourage new owners to get this copy because it does give ALL you need to know on the new puppy trainning, heath, food, obedience trainning etc. Also talks about the older dog. For someone who wants to get an American Pit Bull Terrier should read this book. It talks about responsible ownership and how to socialize your puppy so that it will become a good canine citizen. Although it has a whole chapter about dog-fighting which I don't like, it uses that information to explain the temperament of the breed - which is not a vicious animal like everyone says. Ofcourse pit bulls are dog-aggressive, although some live with other dogs their whole life without any incidents. They love people and strangers and are not guard dogs - in fact they love people so much that they will let a stranger in your house, take everything including the pit bull. Some pit bull owners even get other dogs like Dobermans to protect their pit bull. It might sound strange but its true. Bad breeding, dog-fighters, gangsters, and the media gave this breed a bad reputation. Before you buy a dog - read this book first. Pit bulls are only for very few people - only if you you are getting this dog as a pet, have lots of time to spend timewith them, socialize them, and have time to love them then may be you should consider this breed. Be a responsible owner!

This short, inexpensive book realistically depicts the unique challenges and responsibilities of owning this special breed. If everyone followed his advice, we wouldn't have the negative press we do today. If I bred APBTs, I would give one to everyone who purchased a puppy from me.

Vicki Abbott, having handled the top winning Maltese of all time and having over 30 years of experience in the breed, is the perfect expert on this breed and we are glad that she is finally sharing her experience with the public. This book provides a unique perspective on the breed, and will be very helpful to those just buying a puppy as a new addition to their family, to those who have bred,handled, and raised Maltese for years. This book was an "impulse buy" from Borders Books and Music. When I got it home and read it, I was so disappointed that I returned it-something I rarely do. For lighter reading, The Essential Maltese by Howell Book House is much more informative; for the more serious fancier, The Complete Maltese by Nicholas Cutillo is a must-have. Don't waste your time and money on this book!

I have grown up with maltese all of my life. This book is very informative, and a great reference to have. Mrs. Abbott obviously spent a great deal of care and time writing this book. Truly a compliment to the breed! This book is on my coffee table!

I wish I had read the reviews on here before purchasing this book. I was greatly disappointed with it. It gives an excellent view of the author, her show dogs and her daughter but I felt it lacked information about the Maltese which is what I had hoped for in a book entitled, A New Owners Guide to Maltese. It gave very generic information in my opionion and was not that helpful. If you are looking for specific information on how to care for your new Maltese keep searching.

I have been breeding Boxers for over 15 years and I only give out this boxer book to clients. It is written by a man who knows and lives with boxers and has for many years. He breeds and shows and has a great record and reputation. I tell all my clients that this is the only boxer book they will ever need.

Our family was looking into the breed to research if Boxers were for us. This book was helpful and the information was clear. I also ordered Boxers - A complete Pet Owner's Manual by BARRONS. When both arrived together in the mail I was more inclined to pick up the book by Barrons first. The photos were more inticing and the layout and text was less inhibiting. I found myself picking up the book by Richard Tomita after I completed Barrons book. I would have to say I gathered information from both. If I could only select one - I would select Barrons.

This book, having been written by a breeder, tells you alot about the breed. It is full of valuable information, that can be used everyday. The pictures are great, along with the complete background about the breed. Thanks for a wonderful book.
