5 out of 5 stars Dr Pitcairns natural health.......2007-10-05

This is absolutely a must book. Giving dogs prescribed medications often involves side affects which shorten their lives. Being able to find out about natural products that can help them is great. It can not only lenghten their lives, but also cost less in the long run. I highly reccomend this book to all dog owners.

4 out of 5 stars great resource.......2007-10-01

this is a great resource book. It has lots of background info on dog foods and so much info on great supplements. It could be made easier with breakdowns or charts to guide you for quicker reference, because I find myself having to flip back and forth a lot. There is definitely lots of info and it has to be read more than once. I think the recipes are sound and easy to make. Although I can't cook for my dogs all the time, at least I can do it whenever they are ill or recovering from some ailment or surgery to ensure that their bodies are strong when they need to heal. This book makes it manageable to do that.

4 out of 5 stars A great resource.......2007-09-23

This book is a great resource for pet owners. I find the health-care section of the book very useful. I have modified the recipes to accomodate the inherited allery issues my dog has. Modifying the recipes is a very involved process as the substituion of products recommended and appropriate amounts required for balanced nutrition can be a hassle to figure out, especially, if one's pet was allergic to multiple products.

This is a great book for pet owners who want to try homemade cooking and alternative medicine for their pets.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overall but diet not suited for all .......2007-09-01

There is more than one way to feed a healthy, non-commercial diet. I recommend buying both Dr. Pitcairn's book and Andi Brown's book, The Whole Piet Diet, to see which diet your animal(s) prefer. I have three pets, two 13-yr. old cats and one 1 1/2-yr old terrier. The cats had been eating holistic Blue Buffalo dry food along with some canned Friskies. The terrier was eating holistic Blue Buffalo dry food along with some raw meat, veggies, yogurt, etc. I recently learned that dry food is difficult for pets to digest and is terribly drying and causes digestive problems like vomiting, dandruff, etc. The Friskies is just plain junk food so I decided that I was going to feed healthier fare and bought both books (Dr. Pitcairn wrote the foreword in Andi's book). While Dr. Pitcairn promotes primarily raw meats with cooked whole grains, Andi Brown promotes cooked stews (grains included for dogs only, not cats). After experimentation, I found that my dog and one cat prefer Dr. Pitcairn's recipes and my second cat prefers Spot's Stew (from Andi's book). When I made the switch, I only started feeding the recipes without supplements to the cats. It took 15 days for them to eat consistently, then I started adding the supplements in small amounts and gradually built up to the daily recommended amounts. Tip: my cats preferred Andi's supplements over Dr. Pitcairn's (especially the essential fatty acids in the form of oils). All of my pets are doing very well on the diets but only because I was persistent in finding what worked best for each pet. I will never feed dry food again!

1 out of 5 stars It's a shame..........2007-08-29

...that an obviously experienced and well researched vetrinarian would recommend a diet that includes grain as one of the staples of the diet. Anyone who does even a minor amount of research about the special diet needs of a dog would easily find that dogs do not possess the proper enzymes to break down grain properly and can lead to either minor or serious allergic reactions. Dogs should not eat any type of grain at any time. Anyone who reads this book, do not take it as gospel. Please do more in-depth research before you make any solid decisions on your dogs diet.

Besides that fault, there are only a few recipies included in this rather long book. I heard very good things about this book before I bought it and was thoroughly disappointed after I read it. Its hard to give this book anything else but a negative review.

1 out of 5 stars DANGEROUS!.......2007-08-06

I agree 100% with feeding dogs and cats all natural, whole food diets and am very open-minded, always looking to learn new things about how to feed my crew. My endless research and quest for knowledge led me to this book and, after reading it, left me shaking my head in disbelief, fearing for the safety of the dogs who will be fed this diet by well-intentioned guardians.

First of all, dogs are NOT wolves - they are distant decendents thereof, and there's a big difference. You don't have to look far at all to find many tragic, heart-wrenching incidences of dogs dying after eating raw bones or getting sick from raw meat. The idea that dogs can not get sick from bacteria is ridiculous, and the assertion that food loses its nutritional value when cooked is false. Foods do not have to be raw to be nutritious!

My husband and I rescue dogs, and thereby have the opportunity to experience the joys and trials of helping sick, abused and elderly dogs heal on a regular basis. We currently care for a beagle/rottweiler mix with terrible allergy issues, and after much research and trial, we found that when he is fed an all natural diet of meat, fish, veggies, essential oils, the necessary nutritional supplements, Prozyme, a little fruit and a little plain nonfat yogurt, he is at his optimum condition. In fact, all of our dogs eat this diet in rotation with Wellness and Innova and are all gleaming, energetic pictures of magnificent health who never get fleas (and get no chemical flea treatments) - even our oldest seniors and sickest abuse survivors. No dangerous, questionable bones or raw meat required.

Every dog is different and has different needs, just as people do, so no food plan will ever be the one-size-fits-all 'right' way to do things, and anyone who says it is is full of themselves. Variety is the key to getting all the nutrients needed, just as it is for us. If dogs can enjoy optimum health without the use of risky items such as bones and uncooked meat, why use them? This book offers very little information and absolutely no evidence that the benefit of this diet is worth the potentially devastating risks.

4 out of 5 stars good place to start.......2007-06-10

Having been encouraged for over 10 years to try a "natural" diet for my dogs, I finally succumbed to the pressure, and read this little book before beginning the raw regimen.

I must say, that while it is somewhat more expensive and time consuming, my dogs have never looked better. The diet requires a commitment on the part of the owner, and a little planning when traveling. However, my dogs and I have traveled across the country with no issues.

My Corgis (age 5 months to 9 years) have been on the diet since being having been weaned, and have never had to have their teeth cleaned, show no signs of skin problems, have gorgeous coats, have no "doggy" breath or body odor.

Suffice it to say that I am convinced, and will not go back to conventional processed food for them.

If highly processed food is not good for ME, how can it be good for them???

1 out of 5 stars don't believe everything that you read.......2007-06-01

I picked up this book at a natural food store thinking it would be a good source of information to improve my pets' health. The book contained very little information, it was very one-sided only giving (non-referenced/non-published) success stories and not mentioning any of the many illnesses and deaths that the raw food diet has caused in many peoples beloved pets.
The book sounded good to me and I was considering giving my pets some raw bones as the book suggested, but I decided to do a little internet searching and to my horror found the stories of many peoples whose pets had died after only being on this diet for a few days. I'm so glad that I don't believe everything I read - it may have saved my pets lives.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to follow, good info.......2007-05-31

I was a vet tech for a holistic vet a few years ago and she recommended this book to every client.

I followed it to make food for my own dog and cat and never had a problem. They loved it! I think the best thing about this diet is they produce less waste, A LOT less; it's amazing.

I whole-heartily recommend it to anyone with dogs and/or cats!

2 out of 5 stars Not enough hands on information........2007-05-21

The book was not what I expected. A lot of redundant information on nutrients and bioavailability, a lot of lists, and a whole appendix on references and resources. The list of three diets by weight, a ten pound, fifty pound, and a hundred pound animal was not very useful. My dog is seventy pounds. I was looking for something much more basic in the how to and where to get it. I wanted to know more about chicken necks and turkey necks and not the vitamin or nutrient components of them. The large number of antidotal stores running for many pages may have been interesting if your pet had that specific problem but they are not definitive as to cause and effect or anything else. I wasted my money.

2 out of 5 stars Not that useful.......2007-06-17

Many people swear by this book, but I don't find it that essential. Most of the information was not especially useful or was common knowledge. Mainly I disagree with Pitcairn's use of grains in a dogs diet. Instead, I recommend New Choices in Natural Healing Dogs & Cats and The Nature of Animal Healing.

2 out of 5 stars Hesitating to purchase this book.......2007-04-30

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a forum for questions that can be asked concerning Dr. Pitcairn's latest edition of his book, so I am
hesitating to purchase it. I own the 1982 edition and wonder if it has been updated as far as recommendations of diet- specifically foods that have been deemed dangerous to dogs and cats- as one reviewer mentioned, raisins. I have recently heard of onions and garlic included as dangerous foods for dogs and cats, and Dr. Pitcairn's earlier book is laced with encouragement for feeding them to our pets. As someone who is severely allergic to onions myself, I have learned that they lurk in MANY places and in various forms. Onion powder is just as detrimental for me as raw onion, and is found in chili powder and many other spice combinations, soy sauce, ketchup, mayonnaise, chicken broth, vegetable broths, bouillon, tomato sauce, even canned beans, especially the organic varieties. I avoid feeding anything that might contain these to my dogs. I wonder if the revised edition of Dr. Pitcairn's book includes cautions about feeding onions and garlic to pets? Since I cannot find an answer to my question without purchasing the book, I will continue to hesitate to do so.

5 out of 5 stars The best book to improve your pets health and keep them healthy!.......2006-04-05

I can't praise this book enough. It has literally saved me hundreds of dollars in pet care costs and more importantly saved at least one of my pets' life. I've owned my copy for at least eight years. I have a Weimaraner with allergies which this book has kept her allergy free without the prescriptions recommended by the vet.
More recently I had a cat with a blocked urethra, common in male cats, which can also lead to a rapid and painful death if they are completely blocked. The emergency vet wanted $1500 to catheter and care for the cat for two days with antibiotics etc. I opted to have them do the catheter ($300) and took him home to care for him. I followed the books instructions. He did great right away by giving him the vitamins the book suggests and the prescription food the vet suggested. But after two weeks of being 100% well he started to have blood in his urine again, the first sign of the problem. Then I realized that I had slacked off on the vitamins the book suggests, (vitamin C, and some others). I had mistakenly assumed the "prescription" food would be good enough. I immediately gave him the books homeopathic remedy followed by the books recommended vitamins and their "Healthy Powder" (recipe in the book) and his problem cleared up the next day and he has had no signs of any problem since. He is in the best health he's ever known! And I'm being smarter about his needs.
If you care about your pets, believe in their own abilities to heal, and natural and holistic approaches to pet health, this book is the best; it's the one I go to first to find the answers to my pet's problems.

2 out of 5 stars Inaccurate advice and some expensive suggestions.......2006-03-03

I read this book hoping to find another way to try and treat my dogs skin problems and with the interest to start feeding him more rare food (less kibble).

However this book tends toward more of an extreme view STRONGLY recommending only feeding your pet human organic food and bottled water (i love my dog but if I dont drink bottled water and eat organic food he doesnt need to). There were 3 "booster mix" recipes to add to a kibble diet that were okay.

The recipes seem expensive, especially if you have large dogs, but the ingredients are broken down and ordered by cost per protein gram on a handy chart.

The biggest flaws were the suggestions that we just inaccurate. For instance recommending dried fruits such raisins, when in fact raisins, like chocolate, grapes, and alcohol are toxic to dogs. PLEASE DONT FEED THOSE TO YOUR DOGS!!!! Inaccuracies like that make me question the validity of the rest of the book. I would recommend double checking any advice from this book before following it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2006-02-05

This is one of the best books on the market that cover natural care and feeding of dogs and cats. It includes balanced recipes complete with easy to make supplements, and a wealth of information on how to care for all sorts of issues and problems the natural way. I strongly recommend having a copy of this book on the shelf for any pet owner.

I have owned two copies of Dr Pitcairn's book ... both the first release, which I simply wore out and, when it was re-released in the new edition, I bought a copy of that as well.

If you're considering purchasing this book, don't hesitate any longer. You won't regret it.

Book Description

Articles in Time and US News and World Reports have cited alternative medicine as the fastest-growing area in veterinary care. More than ever, pet owners are demanding facts on using these non-invasive healing methods for their pets. Author Amy Shojai has interviewed top vets across the country, including members of the Holistic Veterinary Medical Association and noted veterinarian Susan Wynn. Pet owners will learn why some vets moved away from mainstream medicine, how the "Healing Instinct" leads animals to their own natural cures, and how alternative therapies actually work. Readers will find tips for treating problems like aggression, fleas, and heart problems with accupressure, homeopathy, nutrition, herbs, exercise and traditional home remedies. Sidebars give "Alternative Success" stories and warning signs for when to call the vet. Now pet owners can be sure their pets have the same practical, holistic healing options as humans do.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2007-06-17

This book is absolutely awesome! It begins by explaining what alternative medicine is, why pets get sick, and making the switch from allopathic to holistic medicine. It also describes, from A to Z, common ailments and how various vets treat them. There are snippets about how pets treat themselves for certain diseases, when to call the vet, and anecdotes pertaining to the ailment. It also has an extensive alternative healing resource guide.

5 out of 5 stars Natural Healing.......2007-05-26

This book is full of several remedies for many different illnesses, problems, etc...
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner from Amy.......2005-07-22

Amy has written yet another good book for pet owners. As the trend in natural healing continues, good resources such as this book, The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats, 8 Weeks to a Healthy Dog, and The Allergy Solution for Dogs serve as important sources of information for pet owners. Read this book and start learning how you can work with your doctor to keep your pet happy and healthy.

5 out of 5 stars Saving my dog's life.......2005-07-06

A friend knew how my aging dog, Nina, was quite ill and that my family was not planning a second surgery, as she might not survive the operation and, besides, the mass on her liver had grown back in a year. She gave me a copy of this wonderful book, which gives options for health care. Impressed with the book, I ordered many copies and have given a copy to others who love their dogs and cats and want an option to drugs or surgery. Here it is! Nina's had extra time with her family and I have a new respect for natural healing, for pets and for people. You should buy several copies of "New Choices in Natural Healing for Dogs & Cats", so you may share the love.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put it Down................2002-06-25

I am in the process of learning about holistic health care for my 2 lhasa apsos and have recently purchased a few books on the subject. I started one book and set it aside to finish later. I picked up "New Choices in Natural Healing for Dogs & Cats" and couldn't put it down until I was finished! I was so impressed with the layout of such a large amount of information. This book is chock-full of great information and it is presented in a terrific format giving the read first the "The Signs" of the condition, then "The Cause" and the "The Solutions". The solutions can be numerous with the author offering different suggestions and not seeming to be biased towards any one particular holistic remedy. Directions are very clear, concise, and easily understood. Some choices mentioned are natural diet (which seems to be the first and obvious step towards better health care for an animal), natural supplements, herbal remedies, vitamins, aroma-therapy, magnet therapy, accupressure with diagrams shown, and of course, recommendations to call your vet to assist in dosage. Although you feel there is alot to learn, the information is broken down so well, it is easy to retain alot of what you read in the first go around with this book. I am sure I will be picking it up time and time again while working to get my dogs in the best possible health. Also included are some behavior problems. I guarantee you will learn some new and valuable information!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book if you want to know it all!.......2007-10-08

Packed full of easy to understand information. Not only does it answer all of your questions for animal care but lots of it pertains to humans as well! I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars A great book for pet owners.......2007-10-05

This is a very useful book for dog owners, especially people who have never had pets before. The doctor offers many suggestions for natural remedies for health problems with your pet.

4 out of 5 stars Medicinal Use.......2007-09-13

I found this book very informative and useful when searching for holistic ingredients and supplements for my dog who has Addison's Disease. There are not many books out there that are user friendly with this disease, but this book made it very simple with highlighted notes and page reference numbers for other suggestions. I really liked the fact that this book had a list and explanation of all ingredients found in typical dog food products. The herbal remedies where a wonderful addition to my research and the book gave me definitions to all the products that were mentioned. Great book overall, and I would recommend it to anyone that is searching for holistic remedies for their pets or just for herbal and product information.

5 out of 5 stars A wealth of information.......2007-06-27

First I would like to say I have never met Dr. Shawn and am writing
this because I am so pleased with his book. With the recent food scare
I was looking for a reliable source for a homemade food recipe. I live
in Dallas which is near where Dr. Shawn practices. He has written
articles for The Dallas Morning News and I've heard people speak
favorably of him on more than one occasion. I'm new to holistic care
and was a bit skeptical thinking I would be admonished for using
conventional medical care and products. This has not the case with his
book at all. Much of the information is just that, information for you
to make better choices for your pet. It is very well written and packed
with good information on supplements, herb, diet etc. I love this book
and have even learned that there are probably some supplements that I
could add to my diet. I would encourage everyone to buy this book as
it is so easy to read, well formatted, and full of information that
will help me give my dog the healthcare he deserves.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best resources.......2007-06-17

This book is really useful for learning the uses and effects of different herbs and supplements. One of the best things about this book is how it's organized. One section lists ailments, each one with a description, treatment options, and listing of natural remedies. A second section lists all the natural remedies, what they can be used to treat, and how they work. I didn't find the nutrition section very useful, but I would definitely recommend the book for it's extensive ailment and remedy listings.

4 out of 5 stars Raw Food Diet.......2007-09-19

This book is designed for folks who are interested in feeding their dogs a natural diet. It seems to be a precusor to the Barf Diet Books. It is technical in it's approach but describes a recommended diet which takes about two sentences. For anyone who feeds this type of diet to their dogs this book gives an excellent rationale for doing so. Although currently there is a "feud" going on between the author and those involved in BARF diets. In my opinion they are basically the same and only differ at the fringes.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting.......2007-08-29

Very interesting, however I do feed raw but I don't agree with feeding grains as Lonsdale does. But between him and Billinghurst if everyone would read their books they would never feed kibble again..

3 out of 5 stars Too much about Tom Lonsdale.......2007-02-12

This book is really a lot more about the author than about raw feeding. It seems to centralize on the problems he faced getting his views accepted (raw feeding dogs) If you really want a basic book that is easier to understand and gets right to the point, then purchase his other book - Work Wonders. Has basically the same info, but without all the personal details.

1 out of 5 stars The matyrdom of Tom Londsdale.......2006-08-29

I bought a few books on raw feeding and holistic diets and I have to say this is the worst. It's not even about raw meaty bones. This book is more about how the author feels martyred by both the Australian Vet Association and the pet food industry. I guess this might make an interesting story if thats the kind of thing you want to read about. I just found it a tiresome tirade.

Work Wonders, by the same author, is much more informative about raw feeding and can be downloaded for free at [...].

3 out of 5 stars Good ideas, but boring........2005-12-26

I love the idea of a raw diet for dogs and I agree with his views on commercial petfood.
I just got really sick of reading about dental issues. It seems like 80% of this book is about dental hygeine.
The book should be named "Raw Meaty Bones promote Dental Hygeine", not "Health".

I also feel he should've given more in-depth information on what to feed/ how to feed.
He is also a proponent of feeding wings and backs alone- that is just TOO MUCH BONE.

If you look at a whole prey animal, the percentage of bone in it will be 8%-12%. Chicken wings/ backs alone are 50% bone. They are not a biologically appropriate way of feeding!
He does deserve credit for stating that whole prey is best, though.

Lonsdale has great ideas, but he should've published a separate book about canine dental health, or not gone off about it so much, and his specific diet recommendations are lacking/ somewhat misleading.

1 out of 5 stars Tempting treats for... whom???.......2007-05-11

I cooked 12 recipes from this book following the instructions exactly. ALL my 7 cats HATED EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM!!!

5 out of 5 stars Good book, GREAT illustrations.......2007-01-04

These are some good recipes, but what really shines is the illustrations. I will be watching Troy Cummings' career with great interest.

5 out of 5 stars Tempting Treats.......2006-12-15

I'm not sure why the Tuna recipe was not successful for one reviewer, because it is one of my cats' favorites (I have 4 finicky felines). Of the 4 recipes they have tried, the Tuna treats are definitely at the top of their list. While tuna is not my favorite smell, I didn't find it too offensive once cooked and the cats went wild (they even sat up, which is usually reserved for cheese treats). I would recommend this cookbook for any cat owner who wants wholesome treats that are not crammed with fillers like the store-bought ones are. I agree that this is a nice gift idea for any cat lover and have an extra copy on-hand just for that occasion.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Treat.......2006-12-14

I found this cat treat cookbook to be just delightful! The recipes are fast, easy, and healthy too. What a fun way to show your cats they are special to you. There is even a recipe for catnip tea. The artwork adds a charming touch. This little book would make a great gift for any cat lover on your list.

5 out of 5 stars my cats are finicky.......2006-12-12

After years of buying kitty treats from the store only to have at least one (out of three of my cats) turn up their noses, I decided to try making my own.

With the help up this book I have finally come up with a couple of recipes to make treats that all my cats love (and make extra to give to friends with cats). I also feel good that that I can control the quality and freshness of the ingredients.

Book Description

You probably feel like you know everything about your cat and his needs, but chances are there's a lot you aren't aware of. For example, did you know that the food you feed him every day has nowhere near enough nutritional value, or that he may have chronic tooth decay? Have you ever been told that the essence of the flower holly can help him be less jealous, or that a massage can lessen his arthritis pains?

The Veterinarians' Guide to Natural Remedies for Cats is an introduction and a guide to the vast world of natural methods, treatments, and foods that are now available for cats. Veterinarians from around the country offer information and opinions to help you determine what's best for your cat. In addition to showing you how to develop a healthy diet for your pet, these doctors will tell you about alternative treatments such as homeopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage, and herbal medicine.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource!.......2007-06-17

I own many natural/alternative healing books for cats, and this is the ONLY one that has post-its sticking out everywhere that I've saved reference points to return to. Also, after cross-referencing with other books, it is almost always this book whose advice I follow with 99% success. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for anyone's pet library.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful and Informative.......2007-03-31

My vet recommended this book to me to help aid the diet of my adopted old diabetic/kidney diseased cat. It's an eye opener... some of the information about pet food is shocking! This book has been so helpful laying out your basic health care, lists healthy food recommendations, food recipies. and great holitistic help with ailments. My youngsters are getting a much healthier start with me just being better informed. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Garlic for Cats?.......2005-07-21

As one of the veterinarians who contributed to this book, I was interested to see some of the comments, especially about garlic.

Garlic is in the onion family and does contain a small amount of the onion's toxic ingredient (thiosulphate). While I have seen red blood cell damage from as little as one meal of baby food containing onion powder, I have not seen such problems with garlic. In fact, garlic is a common ingredient in many pet foods and supplements, usually in small amounts as a flavoring agent. For instance, I have recommended Missing Link for my feline patients for many years; it contains garlic, but I haven't seen any damage from it. Cats being cats, they are far less likely than dogs to eat a food that contains too much garlic.

The article from TC Instincts actually says: "*continued* use of garlic or onions can *eventually* result in hemolytic anemia." This suggests, as has been my experience, that it takes long-term feeding of a significant amount of garlic to cause anemia. As with most things, the old saying "Moderation in all things" is well heeded in this case. (The reviewer also states that dogs can handle garlic and onions; that statement is dangerously false. Dogs are also susceptible to toxicity from these plants; onion toxicity is quite common in dogs.)

In holistic medicine, the fundamental principle is to tailor treatment to each individual animal. It still requires you to watch your pet closely, and to be alert to any changes in its condition. The holistic veterinarian depends on the person who sees the animal every day, to monitor each treatment for any positive or negative effects. This goes for any modality, including herbs and homeopathy, both of which can be very harmful if not used properly.

Anitra Frazier's book is terrific, but bear in mind it is 15 years old. She recommends 20% of the diet to be grains; today, we know that cats do not handle grains well, and a high grain content (such as is common in dry foods) contributes to obesity, diabetes, bladder problems and other diseases. She also highly recommends garlic as a supplement. So while her book contains much good advice, you shouldn't just follow it blindly without balancing it against other sources of information, and constantly assessing your animal's response to each change.

In the same way, this book contains a great deal of valuable information. As new information becomes available, some bits may become outdated. However, to dismiss the entire book because of one (controversial) item is really throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

3 out of 5 stars Regarding garlic for cats.......2004-10-19

I was browsing around for natural cat health information, and read the review below, titled "Disappointing".
I just found out today that cats can't tolerate garlic when I took my very sick, very anemic cat into the vet and realized that I may have contributed to the problem! I've used Anitra Frazier's book "The New Natural Cat" like a bible for years, and it is a good book, but maybe she needs to revisit the garlic issue, which she highly recommends as a treatment for cats.
I've just been to the website the reviewer mentioned, http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/garlic.php, and it seems to corroborate what my vet was telling me today - and i was very unwilling to hear.
The other reviewers seem to love the book, but I'd say that if you really want a great book on taking care of a cat, get Anitra Frazier's book instead -- just don't give garlic to your cat -- at least not till there's more information about it.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing!.......2004-02-15

Of the dozens of books I've purchased online, this book has the distinction of being the first one I've ever returned. Having read the comments of other reviewers, I expected this to be a cutting-edge remedy and nutrition guide. Instead, I found it to be a haphazard collation of miscellaneous remedies offered by a number of different vets. These remedies lack adequate detail on indications, contraindications, preparation, dosage and treatment, and at least one of the remedies I looked up was simply a promotion of the vet's own product. Homeopathic medicines were suggested as blanket remedies for things such as intestinal parasites, with no consideration for the complexities of homeopathic prescribing.

In this book, garlic is suggested as a flea remedy; garlic ought never to be given to cats as it (and onions, shallots etc.) can cause potentially fatal hemolytic anemia. Here is one of many internet sources for this information: http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/garlic.php

There was at least one remedy for dogs in this book. Is this not a book for cats? Cats and dogs have very different needs and tolerances; for instance, dogs can tolerate garlic and cats cannot.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good book for your natural pet care library.......2006-10-08

This book is one of 4 books that I have on natural pet care. I refer to it along with all the others every time I need guidance. I have found it useful for some health issues, and will continue to reference it in the future. I always cross-reference the advice against my other books, then make a decision based on my own gut instinct as to what's best for my animals.

4 out of 5 stars Reply to those for spaying and neutering..........2004-04-09

Although I have yet to actually read the book. (I'm buying it today) I must disagree with all of you who were against the idea that animals should not be spayed and neutered. The owners, not the animals are responsible for the countless animals being murdered at shelters. I would 'fix' myself before I'd do such a cruel thing to my dog. Have you ever fixed an animal yourself? My family raises show goats and bands the young males when they're old enough. To watch the physical and emotional trauma these poor kids go through is enough to break your heart a million times over.
Also, my mother insisted two of our cats were spayed. The emotional trauma there was also heartbreaking. No reaction? These cats dispised my mother for weeks for putting them through such a terrible thing.
If animals were meant to be neutered or spayed, they'd be born that way.
Perhaps all animals shouldn't have children, but removing parts of their body because their owners aren't responsible enough to look after their pets is never going to be alright. Especially as far as the animals are concerned.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Book.......2003-01-27

I bought this book to use for a college course even though the reviews were poor. I found this book to be helpful. It had some different alternatives to the usual holistic and natural cures. Give this book a try.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Advice - I couldn't believe it!.......2001-08-08

Like the writer from Memphis, I too bought this book in good faith. I had to re-read the author's comments on spaying and neutering a thousand times I was so dumbfounded. "Spaying and neutering deprives a dog from the joys of parenthood"? Are you kidding me? It is absolutely that kind of thinking that leads to the millions of homeless animals that have to be euthanized. My advice to the author, spend a few weeks volunteering at a shelter (I have volunteered at one for 3 years) Witness shelters that are bursting at the seams because of his logic. Maybe then the author would realize that the "joys of parenthood" mean nothing when faced with the realities of euthanasia

1 out of 5 stars Natural pet cures: Dog and cat care the natural way.......2001-07-12

I bought this book in good faith that it would help me with three rotty puppies I rescued. One got sick with parvo so I started the treatment on the hour with the formula described in this book. I even started the well puppies on the formula on the hour.My puppies are so sick at this point,4 days later that I am putting 2 down today because they are to weak to throw up.I wish I could sue.My heart is breaking.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time & money.......2006-06-21

This author babbles on about horrific case histories & never does get to the point. This book grossly lacks anything the reader can use to keep their pets healthy in any shape or form. I was very annoyed. Thanks, Lynn

5 out of 5 stars Well-written information on feline health and nutrition........1999-07-28

This is the only health and/or nutrition book I've read cover to cover. The topics are fascinating, and the writing style engaging.

Lazarus provides general information about feline nutrition (or lack thereof) and diet suggestions, as well as sections dedicated to a variety of feline medical problems and both their standard and holistic treatments. She cites numerous holistic veterinarians, but this is not a tirade against conventional medicine. It does offer hope through alternative solutions.
