5 out of 5 stars My Daughter's Favorite Book by Dr. Seuss.......2004-09-08

Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.

To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish was her pick as the best of the books by Dr. Seuss.

One of the appeals of this book is that it is relatively easy to learn to read, yet has much more variety than most other early readers. So your child will feel like she or he has accomplished a lot with reading this book, which is correct.

The title gives the key to why this book works well as an early reader. One word is changed at a time, with a clear illustration next to it. Most children will read the illustrations like a rebus and later associate the words with the sounds of the name for the pictures. At some point, they begin reading from the words. Very nice!

Here's another sequence: "black fish blue fish old fish new fish."

Then, when he moves on, he uses simple rhymes: "This one has a little star. This one has a little car."

Next, he progresses to substituting "some" for "fish" and adding a single verb to make a sentence as in "Some are read . . . . Some are old."

So almost any child can soon begin to read along with few errors in the first 2 or 3 pages. Whenever the child can go no more, you can just keep going. With repetition, more of the book becomes memorized and the process continues.

There is another reward for you and your child: The book also previews many of the wonderful characters and rhyming schemes that appear in other Dr. Seuss books. As a result, it will be easier to get started reading those books. You will feel like you are seeing an old friend again.

You can also use each rhyme to take off on your own speculations. Our daughter used to love to come up with alternative rhymes that fit the pictures.

Books like this one make it great fun to be either a parent or a child. In some cases, this book will be there for you in both roles over 20 to 40 years!

Overcome your mistaken beliefs about how children can start to learn to read by seeing your child start naturally by associating the words with the pictures as you read this wonderful book to him or her!

A decades-old dictionary that you can still use today (and know that children will love it) is an amazing testament to the genius of the Seuss stable. The roughly 12-per-page colored drawings are dated, of course--the humans far more than the animals, funnily enough--but they've aged in a way that adds to their charm rather than detracting from it. (Phonograph may take some explaining; ditto typewriter, which we recently heard described as "like a computer, only with paper instead of a screen.") The 1,350 words are well balanced between the obvious stuff--common nouns and verbs--and more abstract language, from about to yet. Each word is accompanied by a drawing and an illustrative sentence. Along the way, naturally, we meet a wacky menagerie of humans and animals: "Aaron the alligator making more machines," "Aunt Ada standing on her head," etc. (Ages 4 to 8) --Richard Farr

Book Description

A silly book with a serious purpose—to help children recognize, remember, and really enjoy using a basic vocabulary of 1350 words. Written and illustrated by P. D. Eastman—with help from the Cat (Dr. Seuss)—this decades-old dictionary pairs words with pictures that carry their meaning, making it simple enough even for nonreaders to understand. A wacky cast of characters reappears throughout the book, making this perhaps the only dictionary in the world that is actually fun to read!

I got this book 32 years ago when my first daughter was born. We began "playing with" the dictionary when she was around 1, and it was such a source of laughs for both of us. She did learn her letters. At 18 months , while walking through a marked parking lot, she surprised my friends by saying "Mommy, standing on "A". I gave the dictionary full credit!

Now this same person is expecting her first child. The Dictionary is on it's way to her house right now.

Excellent book. My three-year old learned all of her letters in a fun and amuzing way. She was intrigued by the pictures and the activities the characters were perfoming. I highly recommend it for any preschooler.

5 out of 5 stars How My Brother Learned to Read.......2007-02-17

This dictionary is in my book box of Seuss favorites. It really is a PD Eastman book.In March schools led by the NEA selected to promote Dr. Seuss on his birthday. A literacy celebration to promote reading. That is why I had my classroom Suess box out and re-found this book.

("Ten years ago, NEA started a reading revolution. From a one-day celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday to a year-round literacy campaign reaching nearly every home, school, and community, NEA's Read Across America is building a nation of readers. " Or so their site reads.)

It's a kind of teachers uniting to read with children and take a literacy stand yearly shout out. Now it's had ten years to blossom and expand and be a part of Spring in schools. I assumed at its start that each year they would broaden this to another author until years later we found ourselves focusing National Attention on a wide variety of authors, but that was an incorrect assumption as Dr. Seuss remained the primary focus.
And that's cool too. The program does encourage literacy generally. It's worth checking their site to find out more about Read Across America.

Somewhere inside of this it seemed the NEA was finding a phonics answer to promote reading to sidestep whole language, which I found a sad nod to those with limited views, but who cares really? It's worked in schools and it makes March more pleasant as you cook up Green Eggs and Ham or read the story of Horton or think about the Lorax, put on your big Cat in The Hat shoes, or wonder about the "differences" in our world as you read "Red Fish, Blue Fish" and how "from here to there and there to here funny things are everywhere," yeah no kidding. And I don't think Dr. Seuss really meant ha, ha funny. I really don't.

In my book boxes, as I said, is a 1964 copy of a Seuss/Eastman dictionary. I'm going to order several. Children in my room at the five group reading tables enjoy reinforcing their ABC order, reading the short and funny entries and they are beginning to grasp the construct of a dictionary by using the clever text and looking up things. Dr.Seuss or rather Eastman buries good jokes in his pictures and words too for added fun. There's lots of alliteration. A "blackbird is at the blackboard" under the entry for "black". "Drops are dripping" under "drip". "James at the jam jar" under "jam". Oh...none of that sounds as funny as it is, you need a copy to see.

Right now things are coming together for my readers but there needs to be a little motivational push to get them inside a book. Because at first reading is work. So when they read his little twists and turns, or the pictures have funny little almost naughty sneezers and loud, louder, loudest concepts it tickles them pink. And then I can begin the process of putting very young children into alphabetical order contextualized inside dictionaries and then move them from this into their child dictionaries and resource materials. Those really are so much drier and not as accessible. This helps.

As I said, this taught my brother to read and I remember for a time that he would recall words he knew were in here and then go put them in his writing using the dictionary to spell them in order to write better sentences. You can't ask much more than that. Excellent then and 43 years later this old lady teacher recommends this as a classroom resource. Too bad it is not reprinted in hardback as classroom sets. I'd get it in a blink of an eye.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent tool in language development, colorful and lively with fun characters.......2005-12-23

This Dr. Seuss and P.D. Eastman dictionary was one of my favorite books as a child and it is now a favorite of my two-year-old son. Unlike the static illustrations of many other children's dictionaries, Eastman's colorful drawings are lively and always suggest a story. Sometimes my son and I will read portions of the dictionary straight-through, and other times we will randomly browse the book, discussing various pictures as they catch our eyes. Many of the entries actually tie together into humorous narratives. There are also a number of recurring characters, such as the bad baby who manages to spill his food, spill his drink, draw on the wall, paint on the wall, and float away in a boat, Aaron the Alligator and his unfortunate airplane, and oddballs Aunt Ada and Uncle Uriah. However, the four look-alike boys (Jerry, Joe, Jack, and James) who make their appearances in numerous entries were my personal favorites when I was a kid. Of course, Dr. Seuss injects his usual silliness into the text (e.g., "In our backyard we have a hippopotamus" and "A nest full of zyxuxpf birds" are, likely, his touches), but Eastman's drawings keep the book reasonably well-anchored in the known universe.

As other reviewers have noted, the book's illustrations and text have generally aged well, though some of the references may perplex young readers: home movie projectors, milkmen, phonographs, typewriters, and popguns. Also, there are references to "American Indians" and "Eskimos" that no longer sit with us as well they once did. Finally, some potential buyers might be misled by the title, as the Cat in the Hat character does not actually appear anywhere within the book. Rather, the illustrations are entirely from the hand of P.D. Eastman.

A fine gift for a toddler or preschooler, this big book is fun to explore and is an excellent tool in language development. No preschool or kindergarten class should be without a copy or two of this classic.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite book.......2005-11-27

This was my absolute favourite book as a wee one. My parents told me I stole the book off my brother even before I was able to read and refused to give it back even as a teenager. I had the English-French Edition. I am ashamed to admit it but my french appears to be limited to what was available in the book some 35 years later despite 4 years of public school French.

I have recently bought every child I know the English-Spanish version. And I found some English-French ones for my nephews in Canada. THis book is worth every penny.

Book Review

Sheila Moxleyýs An Alphabet Book of Cats and Dogs appeals to the eye while it educates the reader. The book illustrates the letters of the alphabet in such a way that a child can effortlessly construct sentences using all of the different letters. The authorýs use of unusual words and sentences for each of these letters seeks to expand the childýs vocabulary. Moxleyýs captions under the cat and dog illustrations not only explain the picture, but are also constructed with alliteration. Sentences like ýArnold is an amazing aviator,ý for example, allow the reader to connect with the characters. Rather than using the universal phrase ýA for Apple,ý Sheila Moxley adds amazing twists to her sentences that give the book a totally new feel.
Also the illustrator of the book, Sheila Moxley combines real photos and colorful art in this picture book. She uses no computer-generated images but instead, just old-fashioned cut and paste techniques with a little painting to create a collage. . The adorable dogs and cats possess human qualities (one holds an umbrella; another ice-skates), which is sure to make readers laugh. The bookýs brilliantly colored paintings, funny captions, and playful illustrations not only entertain but help the reader learn the letters of the English alphabet.

5 out of 5 stars A great gift - that's hard to let go of!.......2007-05-17

This was originally a gift to me, and have since given it twice to cat lovers who have raved. The photography is unusually stunning black and white, with very whimsical uses of the cat/alphabet juxtaposition. The suede cover with the cut-out is nicely designed, and helps it stand out among other gift books. There's also a wonderful description of the author and how the book came about - which just adds to the personalization of what could easily have been a "typical" cat photo gift book.

Lorenz Kienzle, though living in Berlin, germany, was presented by galleries in united kingdom, italy, france and so on - and he is proud to be presented by the US-publishers Stewart, Tabori & Chang in New York, Manhattan, 115 West 18th Street: and they have done their work very well: The cover of this little precious book is made of black velvet, so cats really will start to love this book too, taking place on the cover for a dream-time. CAT-ABC: the letter "S" for example shows "STRETCH" - the authors tomcat named "KATER" is doing his very best to reach the level of aerobic heroes like Jane Fonda. Letter "R": ROUND - a sleeping-body-hieroglyph showing a circle-form (making a mimikry-correspondance to a coffee-pot); letter "L" - LENGTH: extreme-show: cat KATER is demonstrating, that he is able to make himself as long as a hare - in order to cover the length of his favorite sofa, so that no one else can take a seat. Letter "E": EDGE: cats talent, to let the chin hang over the edge while resting on tables, chairs, cupboards, refrigerators or bookshelfs. Letter "Q" . QUADRUPED: showing footprints in the snow. Letter "C" - CUDDLE: evidence, that human and animal beings are able to make a sculpture of togetherness while sleeping in the same bed. Letter "H" - HIDE AND SEEK - I think this is a manner of playing we can find in the whole world - not only between (human) childs and their parents, between cats and dogs, birds and horses - it's a gift to see the same thing taking place between animals and the extraordinary beings, that climbed some levels higher on the evolution-ledder - HIDE and SEEK - it's a way, to remember the roots of all living. Letter "J" - JUMP - shifting the reader of the book in astonishment and leading him to the opinion, that some cats are jumping more risky than parachutists. Very often books about cats are awful kitch, indeed, portraying animals dressed as humans, posing for bad jokes, they can't identify. But this ABC of cats seems to be composed in memory of the grandfather of animal behavior-science Konrad Lorenz: The photographer Lorenz Kienzle now created a well done picture-collection of animal-observation. If cats could write a customer-review, they would scratch on the paper: "Yeah, that's it!"

What a pleasure to look at good photography and domestic animals, in this case, a cat. Pet books haven't had the best of luck, good ones, are hard to find. Araki has a fantastic book about cats in Tokyo, and extraordinary Magnum photographer Elliot Erwitt had photographed dogs since forever, with wit and skill. Apart from these, pet books tend to be kitsch, senseless, collections of awful photographs, with no sense of reality and story telling. Portraying animals dressed as humans, grotesque and sad. ABC Cat, is elegant, skillful and at moments witty, contemplative and revealing. I hope this is the first of a new beginning of pet books, where the subject matter is not overriding the medium. Congratulations on this book. It is rare joy; everybody who loves photography and animals (or Cats) should have one copy.

5 out of 5 stars Endearing little book.......2004-12-21

Another customer reviewer called this book "elegant, beautiful, and intimate." And it is. It's also gentle and oddly moving. The photographer's affection for Kater is apparent in every frame. Physically, Kater is a garden-variety kitty, but by the mid-point of the alphabet, the viewer sees him as his family does, and he is beautiful. This isn't an ordinary, vapid cat book. I think it's essentially about love.
