Thorough and accurate.......2004-02-04
Dr. Ballard has done an exceptional job of putting together a text for veterinary technicians interested in exotic animals. I am the program director of a veterinary technology program in Michigan and after reviewing this book, I immediately incorporated this text into our Exotic Animal Course. A great text for students, technicians and anyone interested in the health and management of exotic species.

Customer Reviews:
turtle and tortoise TOME!.......2006-08-22
as the caretaker of a red-footed tortoise, and being terribly curious about what's going on "under the hood," i found all the answers that i wanted in this amazingly informative book (and then some)!
curious about prescription drugs? diseases? anatomy? surgical techniques? husbandry recommendations? it's ALL there, with wonderfully vivid illustrations. a word to the squeamish, though -- there are many graphic photographs from study cadavers and of case studies that show the effects of major illness, injury, and neglect/abuse.
while the cost is, yes, prohibitively expensive, please don't let that veer you from trying to check this book out for yourself. many public and university libraries participate in inter-library loans, and you may very likely be able to read it that way (that's what i did!).
The new gold standard in chelonian veterinary science.......2004-05-24
Wow! Only rarely does a book come along that will obviously become the gold standard in its field, and this is definitely one of them. At first glance the price is hefty, but once opened it is clear that this text is worth every penny. At almost 600 pages, this is the most comprehensive veterinary text on chelonians published, and is so far ahead of the rest of the field it is impossible to compare it. The book contains lavish quantities of colour photos. This is further supplemented by illustrations and tables to make the vast quantity of information more accessible and user friendly. This is in no way an anecdotal text, but a copiously referenced resource, assembled by well known authors in the forefront of the field of herpetological veterinary medicine. The book itself is a large hardback volume, printed on good quality paper, with a robust binding that promises to withstand many years of use. This text will without doubt soon become the standard in chelonian medicine and surgery. It is an absolute must for any veterinarian working with tortoises or turtles, either in a practice or a zoo situation. It will be equally useful to serious herpetologists, zoo keepers, and those involved in the captive management, breeding, or rehabilitation of chelonians.

THE BEST BOOK REFERENCE.......2006-08-14
I HAVE WANTED THIS BOOK SINCE IT WAS PUBLISHED, AND WHEN I COULD
GET IT FROM YOU, I TOOK IT IMMEDIATELY. I FIND IT TO BE THE BEST
OF REFERENCE BOOKS AROUND TO DATE. THANK YOU.
Truly exceptional book.......2006-07-27
I enjoyed the book immensly. I read it in one day cover to cover all 900+ pages. Very informative and great pictures of fish. I have been a hobbyist for 20 years and I still learned something from it.
A space filler book .......2006-06-23
The author doesn't even include the temperature to keep the fish.
Disappointing.......2006-03-12
I wanted one great dictionary for reference as I just got started with my aquarium a few months ago. I found this to be badly indexed, and since it is alphabetical by Latin subspecies and then Latin name within it, they assume a great deal of knowledge right off the bat. Then you need to look up the common name in the index to find the latin name and my most common fish aren't even in there under common name (ie., Molly, Platy). Guppy is under "D" in the index, a typo for "G" - which makes me think this wasn't even proofread. I really didn't need information on freshwater fish like bass and pike, since those aren't aquarium fish, so don't understand who the audience is supposed to be. Many fish in here measure over a foot in length. I have an aquarium, I'm not going fishing.
A Very Good Reference but not Perfect.......2006-03-04
Unlike many previous Tropical Fish books from the Tropical Fish Hobbyist publisher that were not much more that an unorganized child's picture book, this Encyclopedia is well oganized and has a great common name and scientific name index. A desciption of the fish is on the left page with two corresponding pictures on the right page which makes for easy reading. I would rate this book 5 stars if the descriptions were more detailed. It leaves out temperature range, PH range, sexing information, etc. even though there is sufficient room in the description area for about 40% more verbiage. I recommend this book to be used in conjunction with the 4 Volume set of the Baensch Aquarium Atlas which provides much greater detail of each fish species.

Great Book.......2007-10-09
This is a Great Book with Great Pictures. It is easy to read and understand. However.. Beware..The other book that Amazon offers, Exotic Shorthair Cat (Popular Cat Library) by Karen Cummings [Library Binding]is the same as this one, the cover is just different. This book is paperback and the other is hardback and the 2 covers have different pictures. I know because I ordered both thinking I was getting 2 different books. Don't make the same mistake I did. It's just a personal preference, paperback or hardback??
Guide to Owning an Exotic Shorthair Cat.......2007-01-15
This is a great book for cat fans, but especially for those who own or enjoy Exotic Shorthairs. The photos are fantastic and are incredibly glossy and colorful. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the printing and the stock that this book is printed on- it made my a great Christmas present for my wife. The reading was entertaining and factual, but the real selling point for this book is the photos.

Book Description
This multiauthored book spans a range of topics relevant to those individuals interested in keeping, breeding, and understanding health problems of the green iguana (Iguana iguana). It offers a unique synthesis of the work and experiences of biologists, nutritionists, and veterinarians who have worked with green iguanas, both in the field and in captivity, and it presents the most current, and in some cases previously unreported, information on iguana biology and medicine. Topics include biology and reproduction in the wild, nutrition in the wild and in captivity, ontogeny of captive iguanas, husbandry, clinical evaluation, diseases, drug dosages and chemotherapeutics, anesthesia and surgery, and diagnostic imaging.
Customer Reviews:
Highly technical, but very good, book.......2005-05-17
This is for the advanced Iguana owner, or someone who wants to become advanced. Basically this book is a series of scientific studies collected in one book, along with information on diagnosing various Iguana diseases and injury. There are color plates showing how to operate on Iguanas for vets. Basically this is a vet textbook, but anyone with a slight background in anatomy, or a pocket medical dictionary, should be able to read this book easily and find it informative. If you want to feel a bit more empowered and be able to discuss Ig problems with your vet, this is a good book.
If not, buy Iguanas for Dummies and James Hatfields Green Iguana book. I have all 3 plus "Understanding Reptile Parasites" by Roger J. Klingenberg, which is unfortunately not available from Amazon.
A welcome contribution to zoology reference shelves.......2003-05-22
Compiled and edited by Elliot R. Jacobson, Biology, Husbandry, And Medicine Of The Green Iguana is a scholarly and detailed referenced packed from cover to cover with virtually everything there is to know about this remarkable reptile. An extensive college-level study, illustrated with an inset selection of color plates, Biology, Husbandry, And Medicine Of The Green Iguana is a welcome contribution to zoology reference shelves and a fascinating resource for iguana enthusiasts to simply read through.
Book Description
Did you know that when Julius Caesar first brought the giraffe to Europe, the stunned Romans called it camelopardalis, seeing it as a cross between a camel and a leopard? That in Renaissance Florence, the Medici, eager to present themselves as true princes, organized magnificent hunts with cheetahs, and staged animal combats in the Roman style? That Josephine Bonaparte was the first to breed black swans, native to Australia, in captivity? Or that William Randolph Hearst kept a private preserve at his California home that included African antelopes, zebras, camels, llamas, kangaroos, ostriches, emus, and yaks? Throughout many eras and cultures, exotic animals have entranced and inspired us. Now, Marina Belozerskaya explores their remarkably influential role in history as among the most advantageous diplomatic gifts, the most cherished royal treasures, and the most impressive symbols of power and learning. How did these creatures come to make or break rulers, and help shape the definition of what it means to be civilized? THE MEDICI GIRAFFE contemplates these questions through a chain of stories, beginning in ancient Alexandria and traveling through republican Rome, Renaissance Florence, Aztec Mexico, baroque Prague, Napoleons France, the robber barons America, and up to the present day, when two sets of giant pandas helped warm frosty relations between two superpowers. This is an engrossing, sweeping history that casts new light on one of our most ancient obsessions.
Customer Reviews:
Good interesting historical fiction read.......2007-04-20
This book is offers entertaining twists on how animals have played a part in driving explroation or politcal intrigue throughout history. To me, the book read like a handful of unrelated stories that demonstrated the authors strength in research, interpretation on historical events and documentation, and care in picking relevent yet manageable stories.
The title is misleading, the Medici Giraffe is but one vignette, and not even the best one in the book in my opinion, but the strength of the book is that it doesn't focus on one geography, one timeline, and one set of historical characters, instead it is like a tour guide through the author's lense of events. Some of the connections to animals seems a stretch while reading it, but I think the body of work stands well in its entirety.
I would have loved to see the cutting floor from all the stories that didn't make it in the book. I suspect there are more such books from this author on different slices of history.
Teaser.......2006-11-05
This book was mentioned to me by a friend in love with Italy and italian culture as a possible insight of the medioeval time.
The title is a teaser. The chapter related to the Medici is just buried in the middle of the book.
It is just another story about animals "in captivity".
If I knew I would never have purchesed.
Highly entertaining and informative.......2006-10-23
This beautifully produced, well-written and well edited book would make a perfect Christmas present for those in search of stimulation as well as entertainment. The chapters are introduced by interesting illustrations as well as by amusing and provocative quotations. Although the book is based on thorough research and wide reading, the author carries her scholarship lightly. Sources are listed for each chapter rather than as single bibliography, which makes tracking down the information used relatively easy. Superscripts would, however, have made this even easier and the work more useful as a reference source.
However, The Medici Giraffe does not set out to be a comprehensive history of private zoos. The author's vision of linking the acquisition of great and extraordinary animals to human power frames the book in an interesting way and she brings it right up to date with some interesting reflections on pandas, and on conservation.
An excellent book for the general reader. Strongly recommended.
A fine, lively pick any library should have........2006-10-15
Exotic animals have long inspired humans who marvel at them, and THE MEDICI GIRAFFE: AND OTHER TALES OF EXOTIC ANIMALS AND POWER explores this fascination throughout history, from Roman times on up. How did the introduction of such animals and knowledge of their existence change empires and perceptions? THE MEDICI GIRAFFE follows these accompanying changes, bringing to life stories from around the world and blending natural and human history. A fine, lively pick any library should have.

From Lions, Tigers and Bears to Tapirs, Kangaroos and Giraffes.......2006-08-23
Animals have played critical roles throughout history. Especially intriguing have been exotic fauna from distant lands. Ancient rulers saw the value of possessing everything from lions, tigers and bears, to tapirs, kangaroos and giraffes. Obtaining such specimens was--and still is--proof of a ruler's or government's power. This in-depth history chronicles seven major points in history, which could not have taken place without the animals.
Elephants in ancient Egypt helped influence a precarious rule. Exotic animal fighters in Rome both helped and hindered a war hero's determination to maintain the trust of the people. A Medici merchant used a giraffe to secure a princedom. New World animals and deformed and albino people from Montezuma's menagerie became Cortés's symbol of triumph in Europe. A seventeenth-century ruler/recluse marveled in his study of exotic flora and fauna. Napoleon Bonaparte's wife created her menagerie to prove her worth and power in a society that saw her as too silly for her position. Finally, meet the media magnate who, known for his strange ways, created a private zoo that both entertained and terrorized the rich and famous.
Marina Belozerskaya introduces readers to an ancient phenomenon that continues to this day. In each tale of power and loss, she fuses painstaking research with a gift for storytelling, giving life to each of the chronicled leaders. In order to provide context for each tale, she delivers in-depth details of the socio-political climate at the time. Then she blended what she could learn of the leader's personality, allowing the reader as complete a picture as possible.
For anyone interested in political history, animals, or history in general, I highly recommend this for your library. Some readers will find the extensive detailing overwhelming or a bit dry at times, but they will discover it is with purpose. Other readers, especially those sensitive to violence--toward humans and/or animals--should be prepared for rough passages, but don't let that stop you from marveling at the importance of exotic animals throughout history.
Pick up this historical narrative, for it is as exotic as the animals it portrays.
