Finally, a book that delves into the world of the gerbil, a small bundle of fur that boasts a large, endearing personality and a fascinating social structure.
Customer Reviews:
Gerbil mastery.......2007-09-14
This book really does make gerbil care easy. Everything from "finding the gerbil of your dreams" to breeding to showing gerbils in competition. I never knew there were such things as gerbil shows! Lots of nice color photos. Devotes a chapter to training gerbils, something not found in a lot of gerbil books. A good book to read if you're even considering a gerbil.
Best book we have found.......2006-12-29
My 8 year old has been wanting gerbils for months. We told him he had to read and be able to talk to us about them and their care. He (and the rest of the family) have now read several books. This was by far the best. My son made the decisions about cages, types, sex etc on his own after reading this book. He could discuss care issues and that he was not ready for breeding, wanted 2 females and what he would have to do to care for them.
In comparison to other books, this has more useful information, is more complete, better photos and after three days with the gerbils has already answered multiple questions.
If you can only get one book then this should be it.
Fun and Informative Gerbil Title.......2006-07-10
The other reviewers are right--Donna Anastasi knows gerbils! This delightful book is so much fun to read (again and again) that it would potentially convince anyone that gerbils are the pets for them. Best of all, it's 176 pages, so it's packed full of information--from tips to games. As a result of reading this book I became a fan not only of gerbils, but also of Ms. Anastasi (you will, too!), whose love for these furry little rodents is evident throughout the work. Imagine my delight when I adopted a pair and found out they're great-granddaughters of her gerbils!
If you only get one gerbil care book--make this one it.
Amazingly Simple, Informative, Practical.......2006-01-21
I purchased this very informative gerbil book about a month ago, and haven't put it down since! I use the book as a reference guide, especially now that I'm breeding gerbils for the first time. The pictures in the book alone are worth buying the book for! I have learned so much, people think I'm an expert! I highly recommend this book for first time and experienced gerbil owners.
The ultimate gerbil book !!.......2005-11-21
If you are looking for the best gerbil care book, look no further.
This is the ultimate gerbil care book. It is very easy to read, full of reliable information and great pictures. The best of all, throughout the book you feel Donna's love for gerbils. I strongly recommend this book for all gerbil lovers young and old.

Has Robert's pet gerbil become one of the undead?
When Exterminator dies, Robert is so crushed, he can't even talk about it. It doesn't help that his older brother, Sam, keeps telling dead-gerbil jokes. Things get even worse when Sam thinks of a plan to cheer Robert up -- and one dark and stormy night, Sam and Robert find themselves right in the middle of . . . the night of the living gerbil!

Night of the Gerbil book review.......2007-03-23
I would recommend this book to a person that enjoys reading horror/comedy books. I didn't think that Sam was very helpful to his brother because Robert's gerbil had died and Sam was making jokes about it. Overall, I thought this book was alright because it wasn't very exiting or adventurous.

Customer Reviews:
To little information.......2006-01-28
I had a few gerbils as a kid, and came back to them as an adult. I was not the best pet owner as a child, and as an adult I wanted to do better, and make sure the gerbils I had were as happy as they could be. My husband and I looked in bookstores and pet stores and this was the only book we found, much to our disappointment. This book is at best a good introduction to gerbils, and has some basic care requirements that most people won't know. However, beyond the very basics I've found this book to be little help at all. The health information has failed to provide critical information every time we`ve needed it, and I've lost 3 gerbils in the past two years. (Store bought gerbils. Now I go to a reputable breeder to avoid the genetic defects.) The food information is not the best either, being vague and very general, and has left my husband and I confused on several points.
If you need a book to introduce your child to pet care, or if you just want the basics on gerbils yourself, this book is fine. If you're an adult wanting to adopt and take care of gerbils well, I suggest you look elsewhere. (The American Gerbil Society recommends Gerbils: The Complete Guide to Gerbil Care ) If you want to breed, for-the-love-of-God why are you looking at this book?
Gerbil Book.......2005-02-12
I got this book from the library and I read part of it. I have two gerbils. Their names are Acorn and Daisy. I had read another book about gerbils that said that they sleep at night but this book said they like to stay up around midnight. This book is right. When my gerbils were in my room they ran on their wheels and kept me up at about that time. I liked a picture of gerbils in tubes in this book. It showed a gerbil jumping into a tube. I learned that you are supposed to let your gerbils run around in a room about three times a week. I hadn't been doing that. Now we let them loose in the bathroom sometimes and on the table in the basement. I also liked the pictures of different colors of gerbils. I didn't know there were black and white spotted gerbils until I read this.
Pretty Good Book.......2004-03-08
I am a new owner of Gerbils and this is the first book I got to get more information on the adorable little animal. It's a pretty good book with lot of great information and pictures.
Good reference.......2000-03-21
I keep and breed gerbils for snake food, but the breeders are also my pets. This book is an excellent guide to keeping the gerbils happy and healthy. I learned what and what not to feed, why woods and plastics are not good in the cage unless intended as a chew toy [plastic is bad], and how to handle them. Great guide, and I recommend it to all potential gerbil owners!
Helpful and Accurate information was given.......1999-06-29
This book is a must if you plan on keeping gerbils!

Customer Reviews:
best books for kids.......2007-01-10
wonderful story and incredible tool for teaching little ones about the consequences of little white lies
i think it's very pleasant to look at!.......2006-09-14
i disagree with the person who put this on the worst of Caldecott list stating that it is unpleasant to the eye. i love the illustrations and the rich ink print. the last picture is probably my favorite image from children's books.
'MOONSHINE' Good and Bad.......2006-02-05
Sam, Bangs, and Moonshine written and illustrated by Evaline Ness was the 1967 winner of the Caldecott Medal and rightfully so. The story takes place on a small island probably on the New England coast and the illustrations portray this very well. The lack of color, using only brown and black outlines sets the mood and gives the story that small fishing community feel. The lighthouse in the illustrations has a striking resemblance to the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse in Maine. Evaline Ness, born in Union City, Ohio on April 24, 1911 grew up in Pontiac, Michigan and became a wonderful writer and illustrator. She delivered her words and visions in absolute harmony of one another.
Sam is a young girl with a huge imagination and a tendency to tell stories. She lives with her father and Bangs, her wise cat. Sam's father is a fisherman and she spends lots of time alone, time to fantasize . . . "Sam said she had a fierce lion at home, and a baby kangaroo." The author explains that what she really has at home is an "old wise cat called Bangs." Early in the story Sam's father encourages her to ". . . talk REAL not MOONSHINE. MOONSHINE spells trouble." That day Sam's friend Thomas rode his bike down and pleaded with her to see her baby kangaroo. Every day she told him that it had just "stepped out." Thomas believed everything Sam told him and he would search high and low to find this baby kangaroo.
On that particular day Sam said that her baby kangaroo just left to visit with her mermaid mother who lived in a cave behind Blue Rock. Of course Thomas races off to Blue Rock. Sam was reminded by her talking cat Bangs that when the tide comes in it covers the road to Blue Rock and that the ". . . tide rises early today." Sam doesn't give it a second thought she continues on in her world of imagination . . . "Pardon me while I go to the moon." Bangs followed Thomas. It is at this moment when Sam begins to realize that "MOONSHINE" may not always be a good thing. The illustrations become darker harmonizing with the mood. "Sam stood there . . . , trying to swallow the lump that rose in her throat."
The story ends happily, just as any children's book should but teaches an important lesson about good "MOONSHINE" and bad. Children need to be encouraged to imagine and create but this story can help direct them in a more positive direction.
I enjoyed this book very much and I'll be looking for more books by Evaline Ness.
good kid's book with life lesson.......2005-09-27
This book offers a fanciful tale, accompanied by a life lesson in the reaction of others to our lies.
A Classic...don't pass it up.......2005-09-14
I read this book more than thirty five years ago and I still remember it vividly. I was about 6 or 7 years old when I first checked it out of the library, and that windy harbor and Sam's personality has stayed with me all these years. I am ordering a copy for my youngest daughter and hope the power of these words impresses her the same way they impressed me as a child. Oh! The joy of reading a good book!
Tracy Price-Thompson, author of A Woman's Worth.
Book Description
To thrive, these friendly little animals require companionship with other gerbils, which means that owners should keep more than one. Gerbils also enjoy being gently held by their owners. Books in this series are written especially for inexperienced pet owners, for parents whose kids would like to have a pet, and for kids who simply want to learn more about animals that make good pets. Boys and girls are also introduced to the golden rules of pet care, and are advised on how to create affection and trust between themselves and their pets. Several gatefold pages in each book open wide to display attractive photo essays on animals and their care. Every book in this series contains approximately 80 full-color, high-quality photos, as well as instructive drawings.

Very thorough.......2006-03-22
We are getting two gerbils for our 5 year old son and I have read nearly everything I can get my hands on. This book contains the lots of information while not being too wordy. I was able to read much of it to my son.
If you're only going to buy one book on gerbils this should be it.
GREAT read.......2004-03-08

Customer Reviews:
great book.......2005-04-08
Andy Russell is a young boy who's life is full of troubles. His gerbils have escaped. He's having trouble paying attention in class. His best friend needs a place to stay while her parents are recovering from a car accident and he's sure his parents will say no! They just found out his mother is going to have a baby!
What did you like or not like about the book?
This is the first book in the Andy Russell series. Kids will enjoy this and look for the others that follow it.
Would you recommend this book? Why or Why not?
I would recommend this book. I feel that kids can relate to the characters in the book well.
Lots of trouble for Andy.......2002-02-04
Good book for children just starting with chapter books. Everytime Andy turns around it seems that he is getting into trouble, whether its his fault or not. Kids will enjoy the pranks in the classroom and may get into the deeper character of Tanisha, who lives with Andy's family while her parents recover in a rehabilitation center from an accident.
The only reason I didn't give it more stars was how the classroom was described and how the substitute teacher was written. She is new to teaching and walks in not knowing how to handle the class and gives them tasks that are outrageous for their age, yet it seems they complete all the tasks given to them and only complain.
Customer Reviews:
Good book.........2006-02-10
This is a great book, includes many more unusual types of rodents (jirds, degus etc). However it contains nothing about ferrets, only rodents and rabbits. This book is translated from dutch, so there are lots of errors, and the grammer can be amusing at times.
