Better books Available.......2007-10-10
I was disappointed in this book. It uses very few ingredients, and just offers a number of variations on those ingredients. Also there is no explanation of why each ingredient has been chosen, which makes it difficult to substitute when necessary. I have a number of other pet-food books, and most of them are more useful.
Pet's health already improved!.......2007-09-10
After following the easy recipes in Dr. Strombeck's book for a month our 4 year old Cocker Spaniel's health has improved significantly! She has the energy of a puppy, her eyes are bright, she sleeps less, and she has fewer bathroom needs. Dr. Strombeck has written an easy to read book and includes his research and rationale for the ideas he proposes. He also includes recipes for pet health problems. The recipes take only a few minutes to prepare and the ingredients are easy to find. NOW Foods, Bone Meal Powder - 16 oz. Using beef or chicken broth to cook the rice or carbs in adds a lot of flavor. Our dog loves the food (even the tofu!) and cleans her bowl every meal. And I feel confident that she's getting all of the nutrition she needs. I highly recommend this book.
A HUGE difference within 1 week!.......2007-08-14
I was preparing a stew for my dogs in lieu of wet food, but still serving them commercial, organic kibble, which they would barely eat. I asked my vet about feeding them 100% home cooked meals and he recommended this book. It is an expensive book and I sort of felt like I need a refresher course in biology, chemistry and math, BUT after reading it a couple times in a quiet, distraction free room, and making notes as I read, I got it. The only complaint I had is the dog weights go in 10lb. increments and a 20lb dog does not get twice what a 10lb dog does, so figuring out a portion for my 12lb dog was kind of an educated guess, BUT I am amazed to report an HUGE difference in their coats in just one week. My 12lb. Boston Terrier has soft hair like when she was a puppy again and our 60lb. lab mix has shown a great improvement with her allergies. It is a little bit of work, but it is easy to cook for a week at a time and just add the oils & supplements daily. If you love your pet, can afford a slight increase in your weekly trip to the market and have the time to prepare the food, DON'T HESITATE.
Healthy Dose of Preventative Care.......2007-07-30
Lots of great recipes for cats and dogs, including special recipes for disease or allergies. Some ingredients are difficult to find, so search around. The book is written for a vet or someone in the industry, so it's not a simple petfood cookbook for your everyday animal lover. But it is pretty simple, really, just a collection of recipes.
If I were to remake this book, I'd:
- Organize the pages so there is only one recipe per page and no recipes were cut in half by a page change.
- Suggest where to find certain ingredients
- Give storage and serving information in the recipe, not the front of the book.
Probably the best guide available.......2007-05-31
Probably the best guide available for those who prefer to avoid commercial processed pet foods. Extremely detailed.
Book Description
This outstanding reference focuses on the clinically relevant aspects of the most commonly encountered internal medical problems in dogs and cats. Now in its 3rd edition, Small Animal Internal Medicine has been hailed for its emphasis on diagnostic approaches to clinical signs, diagnostics techniques, general therapeutics, and synopses of important disorders. It teaches readers how to think critically and develop decision-making skills. The first sections cover specific disorders by body system, while the final sections pertain to oncology, hematology and immunology, and infectious diseases. Each section has been developed by one author for a consistent approach, beginning with discussions of clinical signs and leading into diagnostic techniques and appropriate treatment. Extensive color illustrations, tables, and algorithms set this book apart.

excellent resource for clinical rounds or every day practice.......2007-03-10
As a veterinary student, I have found myself using this book on a weekly basis. If you are looking for a quick overview of specific diseases or a complete description of diseases you are learning for the first time, this book is an excellent resource to have in your collection. Every practicing veterinarian should have this text in their library collection.
Best SAM Book!.......2007-01-28
I'm a veterinary and even though this book wasn't on my school's book list, I took the advice of a veterinarian that I worked with and bought this book. It is so good! It has a little bit more information than my professor;s notes, but nothing crazy. If you are a vet student I would for sure recommend this book even if it isn't on your school's book list. It's written very simply and isn't "wordy" as many of the texts can be. There are lots of diagrams and pictures to help out. I love this book!
One of the best SA Medicine books out there.......2006-02-24
I love the book. It is an excellent reference for my practice.
Beats Ettinger Hands Down.......2002-06-14
That pretty much sums it up. This book is a lot more user friendly. Ettinger's is good for those in acedemia. Nelson & Couto is for those in the "real world".
Vet Students Agree.......2002-05-06
I recently consulted with a group of advanced veterinary students on which of the small animal internal medicine texts would be the most useful to me. For the record, I am an allied health professional with more background in human medicine. I looked at this text and Ettinger's, which--again!--my sources kept referring to as the bible of small animal internal medicine. Ettinger was only about $30 more than this text, and as a big two-volume set, it looked like a better deal at first glance. However, this text is FAR more user-friendly, and there were sections that I read right away out of sheer interest. Unless you are a vet student planning to make a meaningful investment in heavy books, this book is likely to meet your needs and do so in a relatively painless way.

Excellent book.......2007-08-09
The 3rd edition of Infectious Diseases of Dogs and Cat is an excellent book for DVM, BVSc & AH and other equivalent degree programs. It is also an uptodate source of information for ACVM exams. I would recommend it for all Veterinary Microbiologists and Veterinary Practitioners.
Greene's Infectious Diseases.......2000-03-29
As a vet student, I purchased this for a small animal medicine course, but have used it for almost all of my classes. It would be an invaluable reference for the small animal practitioner or vet student and, in my opinion, is the most complete source for information of infectious diseases of small animals currently available.
Book Description
No other quick reference comes close to providing this much accurate, timely, and clinically useful diagnostic and therapeutic information. It's like six books in one -- Diseases and Disorders, Procedures and Techniques, Differential Diagnosis, Laboratory Tests, Clinical Algorithms, and a Drug Formulary. Plus, it includes free access to a fully searchable companion website featuring an electronic version of the text, a searchable drug formulary, and 100 customizable Client Education Sheets in both English and Spanish.

Excellent resource.......2007-05-28
I am very impressed with this book - it was recommended to me by colleagues. I find the differential diagnoses lists especially helpful, and the online reference tool is excellent too.
Highly recommended!
A Must Have!.......2007-02-28
This is a must have for any small animal veterinarian or student. It blows the "5 Minute Consult" out of the water. There is always someone using it our practice, we have just decided to leave it out on our treatment table. It's a very concise but thorough reference for everyday use. It's well organized and easy to read. 95% of the time the information we need is in there. If not, we refer to specific books on Optho, derm etc but you could practice veterinary medicine with just this book! I highly recommend it!

Helpful.......2007-09-30
This book was purchased for me to help set up a business plan for self-serve dog wash with employees. I was not impressed with some of the ideas that were mentioned in the book regarding the design and style of cards to send to the customers to encourage continued business. Overall, this book was helpful and it sparked my own ideas.
Pet Grooming.......2007-05-15
Not exactly what I was looking for. Thought it would have more of example business plans in it. Good starter book for the Pet grooming.
From Problems to Profits Succeeds.......2004-08-10
This is the definitive book on the "business side" of grooming. Why another reviewer here would say to refer to Notes From The Grooming Table doesn't make sense. It's a great book on the "how to groom side" of grooming and is not a book on the business side of grooming at all. From Problems to Profits for the business side of grooming and Notes for the styling side of grooming and you have the best of the best today.
Useless for House Call or Mobile Grooming.......2004-07-18
I was recommended this book by grooming board but I found it totally useless for the mobile groomer or house call groomer. The book called "Notes from the Grooming Table" is a much better investment for the groomer in general.
The best of the best for grooming........2003-12-23
I visited the office of this author today and asked if I could write a review, and they put me online here so here I am. At first I thought this book was the biography of the author. It's not. It's her system she used to go from a tiny salon to a major pet salon. No matter how small or large a grooming shop you want, you can do it. I was so impressed look at me, I came to visit the author and what a warm welcome I was given. I bet her 5,000 pet owner clients loved her as much as me. This is a classic and many books on how to for any type of service business could take a lesson from the format of this book. If you are going to own a grooming small or large there are so many gems of info in this book. I am so impressed and feel so great about my future as a grooming business owner.

Customer Reviews:
Very Useful Resource.......2007-06-08
I am currently finishing up an advanced clinical rotation in surgical and medical oncology at the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. I bought this book as a main resource, along with Fossum's surgery text, Slatter's, and Nelson/Couto's medical text. Withrow's book has been extremely helpful with the background information required to diagnose, treat, and predict the behavior of most tumors. I would recommend this book to anyone specializing in oncology, surgery, internal medicine, or even the general practicioner.
Oncology text.......2006-03-24
If you want the low-down on small animal oncology - this is where to look! This text is the next-best thing to a consultation with a specialist.
A very informative book.......2002-10-12
Small Animal Clinical Oncology is NOT aimed at "civilian" pet owners like me. I bought this book after getting a cancer diagnosis on my dog, desperate for more detailed information than what I've found so far in books for the general public. I hesitated at the price, but I'm now very glad I bought it. I strongly suggest having Taber's Medical Dictionary handy if you're not in the field, and many of the photos were very tough to look at. Each chapter is written by different authors, it's footnoted to the nth degree which makes it easier if you should want to find further info. The chapters are well laid out and offered lots of basic and not so basic info on different tumors and cancers, progression, treatments, theory, classifications, pathology, etc. The last chapter on Bond Centered Practice is very touching from where I stand, addressing the handling of us owners in a very comforting way.
This book has most anything pet owners could want to know from a conventional medicine standpoint if they're willing to wade through it. There's info about the not-so-conventional side too, I found that a bonus since I'm interested in both sides. I did get totally lost in a couple of the theory chapters, that's to be expected for the likes of me, but I managed most of it. While a tough read for for a those not in the field, I've really learned a lot from this book, it's the best I've found on the subject so far. I can't rate this 5 full stars since I am not in the target group it's written for. If there are any problems, inaccuracies, or unnoted controversies, I'd probably never know, but none are obvious to me anyway.

This book is for anyone who understands medical terminology and wants to know in depth information on dogs.

He has said in great detail what you need to know about this book and I concur with his descriptions of the textbook.
probably the best in its class.......2007-03-19
For clinical practice, more insights on specific issues are available in other books.
Comprehensive canine anatomy textbook for the veterinary student.......2007-03-09
This book is a comprehensive guide to canine anatomy for the veterinary student. It contains excellent illustrations and written descriptions of the location and anatomical significance of the bones, muscles, nerves and vessels. Although very detailed, the layout is logical and easy to use, with a nice balance of illustrations, radiographs and written descriptions. It also describes the embryological derivation for different tissues and overall, perfectly complements anatomy lectures and practicals. It has been very helpful for the locomotor apparatus and cranial anatomy. The detail contained within this book make it ideal for any student planning a career in small animal practice.
Excellent reference.......2007-01-10
This book is very comprehensive and a great refrence book especially when used with Miller's guide to the dissection of the dog. It really helps fill out questions and has color diagrams to aid in understanding.
Helpful but wordy.......2006-11-11
The pictures are great, however they can lull you into a false sense of security come prac exams. Its incredibly wordy, and until you get used to this after a year or so of study it can be a bit overwhelming.

It is a good book, especially if you like to color.....but that is the only great thing about it. It lacks important detail, thus it is a coloring book only!
A Colouring Atlas of Dog Anatomy.......2007-09-22
I am extremely happy with the purchase of this particular book. As a student of Animal Bowen Therapy, I require information that is explanatory and easy to understand. This book is all of that and more. The pictures are simple and it is very easy to see the different aspects of the anatomy of a dog.
I received the book in wonderful timing and as always, found the transaction to be easy and non fuss. I will continue to shop for my books this way as it is 9 times out of 10 the cheapest and best way to do it.

Dog Anatomy A Coloring Atlas.......2007-09-07
Beautiful pictures with clear information. This book is required for the Comparative Anatomy class that I am taking. I would highly recomend this book for any vet tech students suffering from information overload. Great help in understanding the basics.
Dog Anatomy: A Coloring Atlas.......2007-07-16
This is an excellent resource for anyone who is studying dog anatomy for any reason. Illustrations are detailed and clearly labelled. I am using this as a reference for a Canine Myotherapy certification course.
Not detailed enough for Vet Students.......2006-11-11
I am a first year veterinary student, and I bought this book thinking it would be a good tool for reviewing my anatomy. Definitely not the case!!! The book is not detailed enough to satisfy the veterinary student (at least not at Tufts!). This is especially true for the nerves and bones. I would recommed getting the Evans and deLahunta "Guide to the Dissection of the Dog" instead, and coloring in their black and white illustrations.

Only book out of 3 others that mention heartworm in cats.......2007-09-13
I purchased this book along with 3 others to educate myself as to various diets and medical care of my pets. I found this one so far to list anything about heartworms in cats. I live in Oklahoma and we have a lot of mosquitoes and have had 2 dogs that contracted heartworm but we've never had a cat contract it and we've had cats live to be 14, 16, and 20 years. I had my suspicions about the necessity of giving heartworm medication to a cat and Dr. Hamilton pretty well answered my questions about it in two sentences on page 332, "This is a serious disease that primarily affects dogs (it is rare in cats, despite claims by the preventive manufacturers)." and, "I do not recommend their use (preventives) in cats, as the incidence does not warrant the drug use in my opinion." Overall, I found it's a very professional yet understandable book for those of us who wish to take care of our beloved pets through more natural means.

Very highly recommended for folks who cannot afford to run their pets to the vet constantly!
