A Step by Step guide to making the best deal in buying or selling a Home.
Customer Reviews:
Give Bruce a break..........2001-03-20
The prior reviewers for House Smart seem to be looking for something this book is not and does not claim to be. I have not heard Bruce Williams promote this book as a comprehensive guide to home buying/selling, but rather a 101 course on what an uneducated homebuyer/seller needs to be aware of. Mr. Williams has long been a believer in people educating themselves to effectively deal with whatever comes up in life. For those who have no idea what's happening, this book can be valuable; especially for those who may be less trusting of others in media, as many of Bruce's listeners are. The residential real estate process is difficult enough to think everyone has the time or resources that something like free info from the internet demands to educate themselves.
Probably better on tape than in print.......2000-10-25
I agree with the other reviewers that this book is entirely too superficial in its discussion of complicated topics. It seems a contradiction in that the folks that would take the time to seek out and read the book would by their very nature be interested in specifics. Bruce appears to be writing for a radio audience instead of a reader. Things that are part of his charm on the radio--lack of political correctness, somewhat old-fashioned diction (e.g. "Bruce Williams and His Lawyer"), etc.--come off as amateurish in print. I like Bruce's show and will continue to listen, but I doubt I'll buy another of his books.
House Smart Isn't.......2000-09-25
This book fails to deliver. Unlike Bruce's radio show which is mildly entertaining due to the real time interaction with the public this book is staid and boring. It does however have one thing in common with the radio show and this is its biggest downfall: - it skirts around the issues and doesn't actually provide any real information which could be useful.
Not as good as his radio show.......1999-08-26
I love Bruce's show and bought 3 of his books and various tapes. His books, in my opinion, aren't nearly as good as his show.
You can find better material for free on the web.
Sorry Bruce, but that's my honest opinion.

Quick study.......2007-01-09
A great condensed version of how and what to study for the ACT.
many errors, not worth the money.......2006-08-21
some of the answers follow no logic at all and majority of the questions have errors. Try another book
Only buy if you need more practice tests.......2002-08-13
Do not buy this book if you are looking for a guide to prepare for the ACT...this is because the book only has about 15 pages of review per test. So, if you need a review book, I suggest that you go to the Princeton Review book, which does a pretty good job.
However, if you have used up all the practice tests in the book that you are currently using, then I strongly reccommend this book. The book offers four practice tests (even though the cover says it offers two tests.) Each answer is fully explained, which makes the tests a lot better than the other books.
So, if you need review, don't add this book to your cart. If you need more tests, this book is a very good source.
Waste of Time and Money: Better ACT Books Out There........2002-05-27
In preparation for the ACT, I have studied the Cliffestestprep ACT book closely. And in the process, I have seen MISTAKES in the answers.
On page 33, "5 x 4=25".
on page 159, question #11 on practice test2, the answers are mistakenly copied from question #10...so the answers don't make any sense for question #11!
These are just two mistakes that I've seen, but judging by that, I wouldn't be suprised to find more. I wish I could return the book, but since I already marked it up, I cannot. Don't buy this book, get a more helpful ACT resource. This book has 4 practice tests, but because of the mistakes, I am relucant to go further.
Finally, the practice problems are more difficult than real ACT problems: CLiffs give you long-winded and confusing explanations for problems you don't even need to know for the actual ACT. I'm sure you can find more consice explanations in other resources. In short, this is not the best choice for getting ready for the ACT.
UPDATE: I recently checked out Princeton Review's CRACKING THE ACT 2002; I highly recommend it for great strategies, tips, and practice material. I also recommend GETTING INTO THE ACT, which is the only review book sponsored by the ACT itself. This is the ONLY book with REAL full-length ACT tests from a few years back;thus, you get familiar with the format of the test and its degree of difficulty. These two books should be all you need to prepare...going through these books..I realized just how useless CliffsTestPrep ACT was.
Excellent resource!.......2002-03-29
I am a guidance counselor and have used this book to help students prepare for the ACT. I like how the book lets you take practice tests, a little at a time, if you choose. Then helps you analyze your mistakes: were they lack of knowledge or careless mistakes? Then you can analzye your careless mistakes and learn to avoid them. After having a workshop with seniors using this book, one of the girls raised her reading score from 18 to 29. As with all books, you have to READ it, STUDY it, and APPLY it, if you want results.

SO DISAPPOINTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-04-02
SHOULD HAVE READ THE REVIEWS BEFORE BUYING!!! As stated by previous victims, pictures are small, blurry screen shots from the tv show. Gets 2 stars because the book gives SOME good pointers and gossip into some of the famous peoples' lives or whatever. NOT WORTH IT!
Blurry pictures, not worth it!.......2002-12-19
This book was very disappointing. As someone stated before, the pictures are very blurry and are video captions. The print is so small, you need a damn magnifying glass to read it. It was not what I was expecting. My advice to all potential buyers is to save your money and just watch the re-runs.
Disappointing..........2002-11-27
I love Mtv's Cribs and couldn't wait to get the book. Unfortunately, all the pictures in the book are NOT photographs, but video stills from the show. The pictures are rather small and the clarity isn't very good.
good.......2002-10-24
this is a great book if you want to be an interior designer
Customer Reviews:
The book to own for anyone wanting a smaller home with big appeal.......2006-03-22
After looking and buying a stack of home design books, we became discouraged. Every book had repeat plans and nothing seemed unique at all, mass produced home ideas.Book after book were added to the stack with no luck at finding a plan to our liking.
We were so excited over Donald A. Gardner's unique style. The first book we found by him had larger homes but his style was like no other. Needless to say when we found "Affordable Homes for Every Stage of Life" we were thrilled. After a two year search,we are now getting things in order to build our home, thanks to this book. I recommend it to anyone wanting a smaller but still beautiful home.
Not only are the plans, in this book, full of character but the book itself is very nicely made with nice photos and an all around quality book.

Book Description
A Home for Nathan is a colorfully illustrated book which traces the true story of a young unwanted cat as he is cared for at an animal shelter and finally adopted into the loving home that every cat deserves. The book gives children a positive introduction to animal shelters and emphasizes humane concepts such as compassion and responsible pet care.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Have for Every Child's Library.......2005-05-07
This delightful book brings awareness to children (and their parents!) about the need for responsibility and forethought when considering adopting an animal. Ms. Roll has presented this lesson with skillful story telling in a most entertaining fashion. The illustrations are totally charming. The author is to be applauded for this wonderful book and her work as a humane educator. All Paws Up!
My child loves this book!!.......2002-02-28
I read this book to my five-year old. He loves animal books and this one immediately became his favorite. It is one of my favorites too, because the message is one of kindness. What a sweet book!! I especially recommend it to families that have adopted a pet from an animal shelter.
Great book for kids.......2002-01-08
I began using this book in my 1st grade classroom 2 years ago and I think my students benefit a great deal from it.
It is both enjoyable and educational.
A great introduction to the responsibilities of adopting and owning a pet.
a home for nathan belongs in your home!.......2000-08-23
i thought a home for nathan was a great story for kids about the reality of homeless animals. ( so much so that i gave a year of my free time to do the illustrations) too often, this side of caring for a cat or dog ( or bunny rabbit after the easter holiday) is not taught to kids. it IS a life long commitment, hard but extremely rewarding. a home for nathan is great because it shows kids everything involved in having a pet, without being preachy. it is a serious message in a fun book. when i did the illustrations, i drew REAL people (though the original nathans owner was edited because "he would scare kids"). i wanted to show children that white people with blue hair, and black people with dreadlocks can be professional and responsible. also, though nathans new family is not "traditional" it is normal and filled with love! children learn about life through what they see. in a home for nathan they will see real people doing really great things!

Make sure it's published after '02!.......2006-07-26
There have been two editions published with this same title. One was published in 1989, and the other, in 1995. I own the 1989 edition, and found it to be helpful in preparing to take the GED test. The book (I assume both editions) is a good test of High School level (or slightly higher) knowledge. It has a "Working Toward Success" section, giving practice problems in all of the test categories, as well as answers and explanations. "How to Start Reviewing" is a portion with more practice questions and readings, that are more realistic to the GED questions (as of the edition publication). Then there are two separate "Practice Examinations", each including all five test subjects, and each followed by "Scoring and Explanations".
Unfortunately, I found that the GED test was changed in 2002, and some of the material in the 1989 edition is no longer useful. Some examples are: the test subjects are now divided differently, and the rules for the essay have been changed. It's also possible that the current tests include topics left uncovered in "You Can Pass the GED", or pass over some that are stressed in this book. Over all, it is a helpful book for reviewing High School subjects, but I would recommend that you either skip this book, or at least don't finish your study with it. Make sure your final study material comes from a book published after 2002.

Book Description
More than any other single characteristic, aridity defines the American West. Water scarcity and its biologically critical function have also molded the regional literature of the region. Using novels by Barbara Kingsolver, Edward Abbey, John Steinbeck and Mary Austin, Dripping Dry combines literary analysis with environmental criticism to demonstrate how the myths that have pervaded the regional literature of the West have interacted with the myths that have shaped water policy throughout the twentieth century.
The four works selected (Animal Dreams, The Monkey Wrench Gang, The Grapes of Wrath, and The Ford) present a composite portrait of reclamation, which the author argues is one of the most important cultural and ecological phenomena in the nation's history. The tensions and contradictions presented by the novels underscore the compelling need for an ecocritique of the relationship between literature and politics. David N. Cassuto deciphers the myths of reclamation and restoration and presents a third alternative--sustainability--in their stead. The challenge is a large one, because of the size and complexity of the region and because nature continues to evolve and create itself, a process involving language, ideology, and the land.
The book is designed to be an interdisciplinary contribution both to the emerging field of literature and the environment, as well as to environmental studies. It will be welcomed by scholars as well as general readers interested in new approaches to literature and environmental issues, and by those interested in the geography and literature of the western United States.
David N. Cassuto, formerly of the English Department of the University of Missouri-Rolla, is a practicing attorney in San Francisco, specializing in environmental issues.
Customer Reviews:
Dripping Dry:Literature, Politics and Water in the Desert So.......2001-10-16
Dripping Dry by David Cassuto is a 'must read' for anyone with an interest in in the hydrology of the arid West. Cassuto eloquently examines the history and literature of the reclamation movement, the development of the restoration movement, and the need to develop an alternative: sustainability. He discusses four books concerned with the history of water in the West and the links between the literature and the politics of water (Mary Austin's The Ford, John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, Edward Abbey's The Monkey Wrench Gang, and Barbara Kingsolver's Animal Dreams. In his last chapter, titled Imagining Sustainability, he expands on his vision of the possibilities of sustainability as a workable environmental approach. His vision is fresh and challenging.

Customer Reviews:
Good review of neuro, facilitates memorization.......2006-06-15
I love the Recall series. I discovered it with Surgery Recall, and though I haven't had my surgery or my neurology rotation yet, I still find that I'm learning from both books. The recall books are organized as self-tests where a key word or question is given, and the answer is on the other half of the page, so you cover one half of the page, read the key word or question, and try to answer it, then check yourself and repeat if necessary until you know it inside out. It's an excellent way to cram the basics of neurology firmly into your head.
Some problems:
1- Some of the basics reviewed in the Neurology Recall book are a little too basic, which makes me not want to repeat certain pages even if there may be a challenging or important point mixed in with the easy stuff, but on the other hand, it certainly has quite a lot of information that I didn't know in it, and there's less of the basic stuff the farther I get into the text.
2- If you repeat a page enough times, it's easy to know the response based on the location of the question on the page or the question that came before it, rather than actually associating the correct answer with the question. One way to solve this is to cover up the questions and see if you can deduce the question by looking at the answer. If you have, you've actually learned it.
3- At least one typo in the mapping of the pharynx and lips to their respective areas in the motor cortex (Compare p.64 to p.65). Most books have some typos, so I recommend this book anyway, but hopefully there aren't too many more that I've missed.
I've paired this Neurology Recall book with Pretest Neurology and I feel that it's a great combination. Neurology Recall is good for pure memorization, while the clinical scenario type questions in Pretest Neurology provide context for some of the information you're memorizing. Pure memorization without context is not very conducive to functional use of the material you've memorized. Similarly, questions without learning the basics first don't necessarily make any sense, but learning the background and then using it by doing practice questions works very well.
