3 Cheers for Liz!.......2005-01-14
This book is wonderful. It's simple to read and I've had great success following the training techniques. Liz teaches the importance of training your cocker with a firm, but loving hand; as well as how to train your cocker to have manners and do some pretty impressive tricks! Knowing how to work with my dog, has given us a wonderful and fun relationship. I bought a few other books on Cockers, but this one by far is my favorite!
Nice tips on how to TRAIN.......2002-12-08
You won't be confused when you get to the training part. The book explains the stuff well, and at the same time the pictures of Cockers are cute and colorful. My friend read this, and since our friend lives in our house, we will have tips on how to train the best dog in the world, the COCKER SPANIEL!!!

The Complete English Cocker Spaniel.......2003-09-29
This is a great book. If you are new to this breed it is very helpful. The begining of this book goes into the history of the breed. It then analsises the Standard of this breed. The author uses drawings to help us to understand the Standard. That is very helpful! The Chapter on grooming is fantastic! Bonnie Threfall provided the demonstration pictures. I learned a lot from this. The pictures were very helpful. It then goes on to talk about showing and breeding these beautiful dogs. The section I learned a lot from was Early Breeders and Breeders of Today and Tomorrow. I couldn't believe how many people I actually know or have met are in this book! It was and eye opener! I would recommend this book to anyone new to this breed! It's a must!
Good outsiders background for showing Encglish Cockers.......1998-10-11
This book represents a good background on the whys and wherefores of showing English Cockers, especially from the point of view of an outsider. With no real knowledge of showing dogs (as ours is a rescued pet), it prooves very interesting reading.
The book is very much North American in content with nearly 100 pages dedicated to both early and modern breeders in the US and Canada. This is not a shortcoming for an Australian reader as it generally makes for interesting reading.
Photography is all black and white, and includes detailed grooming images and a collection of historical images as well as many suberb photos of various dogs. The pups in chapter 7 "Breeding the English Cocker" are a real treat.
All in all, worth the purchase for someone who considers an English Cocker more than just another dog

A good read but is was too general.......2000-06-24
It was a good book but it was too general. The book should have covered more on the different aspects of grooming, different inherited defects the cocker spaniel can have and how you can pick them at the puppy stage. I liked how it had examples of the cockers behaviour from personal experience. Overall it was a good book.
The perfect book for raising a cocker puppy!.......1999-02-15
A fantastic book brimming over with incredibly useful information. It has priceless information in it about every aspect of raising a cocker puppy whether you are raising your puppy to be a house pet or a show dog. It even tells the exact color requirements for show dogs. As a cocker spaniel owner myself, I can tell you that I refer to this book several times a day. It's a book well worth it's price!

Good Book If You Own A Cocker Spaniel........2007-06-13
I recently adopted a Cocker Spaniel from the humane society. I had no knowledge of this breed and had not planned on adopting a breed until I researched it first. Well, Sydney caught both my eye and my husband's. She is adorable with her big brown eyes. I ordered the book after I adopted her, and I am glad that I did because it helps to understand the breed. Consider a Cocker Spaniel, and buy this book first.
Great Little Book.......2006-08-12
This book is perfect for someone who wants good general knowledge about the Cocker Spaniel. It covers all the basics and then some. It is a small book. It is concise and perfect for the average pet owner. I like it very much.
Excellent for New Cocker Spaniel Owners.......2001-02-23
This book is exactly what the new Cocker Spaniel owner needs. Not bogged down with technicalities about the dog's structure, it concentrates on presenting the important things about your new pup. A smattering of the history of the breed fills it out nicely. Judy Iby is no lightweight either...Judy herself has put over 100 AKC titles on her own Cocker Spaniels, including obedience, conformation, tracking and agility. She has mentored probably hundreds of new Cocker Spaniel owners through the puppy and adolescent years of their new companion dog's life, and now she shares this wisdom with the rest of us.
I would have rated the book a "5 star" book for just Judy Iby's contributions, but I think the "generic" parts of the book that are tacked on on by Howell to construct their series of breed books almost detract from the fine quality of the original contributions about the Cocker Spaniel by Judy Iby.
It is accessible, inexpensive, and a Gem for new Cocker Spaniel owners.

A great place to start.......2005-01-14
A handy little book that is very simple to read. The Essential Cocker is an excellent source for a simple overview of cockers, I purchased 2 more books on Cockers before purchasing my Cocker puppy. This book helped prepare me for some of the breed's indiosyncrasies.
Very General.......2004-04-09
This book provides very little specifics for the Cocker Spaniel breed. It's more of a training guide for raising a puppy. Save your money and buy a book more geared towards the Cocker Spaniel as a breed.
The Essential Cocker Spaniel.......2000-01-27
The Essential Cocker Spaniel is a great handbook giving specifics about the beloved Cocker Spaniel. Prior to owning a cocker any potential ower MUST read this book cover to cover. It is wonderful for reference after acquiring this wonderful breed of dog.
Photography in this book is fabulous. Winter and Churchill did their usual outstanding job.
Outstanding new book on training and care of a Cocker!.......1999-04-28
This book is well written & well organized, from a very positive approach. It would be an asset to both new and experienced owners of Cocker Spaniels. Well illustrated and packed full of useful information on making daily life with your Cocker a blast!! Love this book!

Great Reference Material.......2007-01-23
This book does contain alot of information on cockers, especially helpful if interested in breeding or showing.
Includes grooming and training tips. Was a little disappointed though that the pictures are small and in black & white. Alot of them are demonstration or example photos and are hard to see.
A thorough and meaty book.......1997-04-24
The development of the breed is explained and its relationship to the Sussex, Field and English Cocker breeds is defined. The photos are charming. The section on Form vs function is worth the price of the book. This is one book you shouldn't overlook.
Dog Fancy Magazine
A breed book difficult to parallel.......1997-04-24
The range of information is immense. A facinating book with a different approach and by today's standards good value for the money. For Cocker enthusiasts this is an encylopedia of the breed which would be difficult to parallel.
Our Dogs Magazine of England
An excellent reference volume.......1997-04-24
Dr. Grossman has written what must be the final work on the American Cocker Spaniel. The author has written with clarity, and a tuch of humor sparkles in his style. Every owner of a Cocker will want to own this excellent book as a valuable reference and as a real source of practical information.
American Kennel Club Gazette
MUST BUY!!!!!.......1996-05-19
This is a must get. Especially for anyone truly interested in breeding cockers for show, color, and comformation. It has an excellent chapter in breeding for coat color and genetics. The book is written well with a touch of humor from a man who has much experience with the cockers; not someone who wants to publish a book about the breed. He has many references to other reading material, as well as a very thorough history of the breed, including many pedigrees on these dogs. If you only get one book on the Cocker Spaniel--this is THE ONE to get

Wonderful.......2001-08-10
A tremendous guide to owning a cocker, which has certainly helped me and by extension my spaniel Barry. There are fantastic tips on training and health care as well as tons of superb colour photographs. I enjoyed the book immensely and, though I have a sneaking suspicion that Barry is using the book as porn, I wholeheartedly recommend it.

guide to owning a cocker spaniel.......2002-05-05
This book aritcle didnt have the informationtion that I was searching for. My Dog is not for show and Ive had her nuetered so she isnt for breeding. She is a pet for my three grandsons and I was looking for in formation on the dogs health problems, such as cataracs, hip didplacement and why do they get the gunk in the corners of their eyes and the best way to train my spaniel to obey me
This article is designed mostly for breeders and show dogs
Not as informative as I had hoped.......1999-02-23
After recently purchasing a cocker spaniel puppy, I was looking for a book that would give an insight to temperament, behavior, and possible health concerns of cockers. This book touched very briefly on these subjects and focused more on details for owning a show-dog. Since our cocker is purely a house pet this information did not interest me. There was very little in terms of the insight of understanding cocker spaniels and the best way of training your cocker. There are lots of cute pictures of all the different colors cockers come in, but other than that I didn't get much information that I was seeking from this book.
