Book Description

The Conclave of Shadows has smashed the Nighthawks' dread plot to destroy the Empire of Great Kesh through civil war, putting an end to the murderous brotherhood's reign of terror. But there is no time for the victors to celebrate, for the mad sorcerer, Leso Varen, has taken refuge with the Magicians of the Assembly on the world of Kelewan, and is lost among the most powerful men and women of that empire. And a devastating new threat looms on the horizon: hordes of the Dasati—the most vicious warriors in the known universe—are massing to overrun both Kelewan and Midkemia.

The great sorcerer Pug knows of no power that will vanquish the invaders. And he realizes he must now enter another realm of reality if his world is to survive—and make his way to the poisonous heart of the Dasati Empire to find the answers he needs to defeat the fearsome enemy. Joining him on his quest into the dark unknown will be the brave Magnus and Nakor . . . and a disturbing young stranger named Bek, whose terrifying bloodlust and uncanny strength attest to a host of sinister secrets waiting to be revealed. But the champions of Midkemia will need every ally they can muster if their mission is to succeed in the most terrible place they have ever ventured—as they and all Midkemians prepare for battle against the encroaching doom that would swallow their world.

2 out of 5 stars Most Original Feist Novel in Years . . . But Horribly Written.......2007-10-11

I feel a little bit like Jake Gyllenhal's character in 'Brokeback Mountain.' I've been reading novels of Midkemia for so long (my first grown-up chapter books in elementary school)that I just can't quit you, Raymond Feist, no matter how bad a writer you have become!

I went back to Feist's original Riftwar books to see if he was always such a bad writer. Nope. I re-read a few chapters of 'Magician,' and that book has tolerable prose, and the dialogue doesn't make me wince. Could it be that Feist didn't write the more recent novels of Midkemia? Could it be that he just jots down story ideas and hands them over to a high school Sophomore for fleshing out? The cheap, easy sentiment (Pug's son marrying an admirable young widow and adopting her impoverished-yet-cheerful sons into a life of privilege and opportunity) and teen-movie cliches (said sons going to boarding school, beating up the school bully, then becoming friends with the bully and the hero-worshipping nerd who ends up being the King's son) just ruin what could have been the best Feist book in years.

About a third of the novel is from the Dasati point of view.
When Feist first introduced the Dasati, it seemed a lame attempt to create new villains worse than the last villains the Midkemians overcame. But in this story, Feist takes us into the lives of the Dasati, and it is more engaging and unique than anything Feist has ever written. The author has really put some thought into what a culture of Evil would be and how such a culture in fact cannot really exist.

I was very happily surprised at the complexity of Feist's Dasati narrative, but it is not enough to save the book from the awful prose and paper-thin characters.

4 out of 5 stars Into a Dark Realm.......2007-08-23

This is a good Feist piece of work. It does not live up the Riftwar Saga, but the Magician series was by far his finest works. However, Feist is beginning to introduce and utilize many new characters. For many this will be a welcome change. I enjoyed Feist's other series that leveraged new characters. The Tsurani series was great.

The Conclave is still at the heart of the book so those with attachment to Pug and Nakor will find them plenty to keep you interested.

All in all, I recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Into a Dark Realm (The Darkwar Saga, Book 2).......2007-07-12

Feist did a wonderful job bringing his past and present works together in this book. I love the direction that the story line is progressing towards. He leaves you waiting with anticipation for the next book (as usual).

5 out of 5 stars The Story Continues.......2007-06-26

The Magician Pug, his family and friends continue in their fight to allow both worlds to survie free and not part of the dark realm. The story is well written and continues the saga of Pug over a very long life time and his war with the dark power which is trying to subvert both worlds in which Pug has a stake. Some friends and people, of course, will no longer been seen. At least it seems so, as they are eliminated by the dark power. Its tough fighting a god like force when you are mearly mortal, or near mortal. Pug also must face the time when all his family will pass on to the wheel and leave him behind and alone. But in order to stop this force he must face that reality and move forward in his fight.

5 out of 5 stars awesome book!!.......2005-08-02

This book has taught me alot about pugs, especially because I am going to be not only a first time pug owner but also a first time dog owner. I have learned how to be patient in the training process and can't wait to put the skills and training ideas to work!!

2 out of 5 stars too much but not enough.......2005-07-25

this is not good enough for the serious pug owner - it is too general regarding dogs but not nearly specific enough regarding pugs. the format is haphazard - one gets the impression that the author has 'read up' on pugs in order to write this book, but i doubt if she had owned or shown a pug. the index is all over the place; avoid this book and buy one by a professional pug expert.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent writing, very good book!.......2007-08-28

First, a little background on my experience with pugs: My husband and I have owned (or rather, been owned) by pugs for more than 15 years now. All of our pugs have been from Pug Rescue, and so came to us with various physical problems and emotional baggage. The emotional issues are easily handled in pugs with affection, discipline and exercise (see:Cesar Milan). Plus, all pugs really want to do is love and be loved, so once you have met that need, they become much more emotionally stable no matter what they have been through.
Physically, however, pugs are prone to all sorts of troubles, many not so easily remedied. Here is a brief list of what we have run into: luxating patellas, dry eye, stenotic nares, nosefold and ear infections, bladder infections, food and skin allergies, immune-mediated polyarthritis, abraded corneas, interdigital cysts; the list goes on.
For people considering buying a pug, you should know that even pug puppies from "good" breeders can have these issues. A couple of our rescue pugs have been from "backyard breeders," people who just breed pugs without really knowing what they are doing. But one of our pugs came from a stellar breeder in L.A. who charges $1200 per puppy (don't ask how this pug came into rescue -- it's a long story) and that pup had serious medical issues too.

All this by way of saying, a pug is a major investment. You may get one that is super healthy, but you may not. Phil Maggitti's book is an extremely helpful "first-glance" book for both people who are considering getting a pug and those who already have one or more. That is, the book is a wonderful introduction to the many aspects of pug ownership. Maggitti does discuss the medical issues but he also does a fantastic job explaining the pug personality, which is not easy to capture! He is a very good writer, and there were times when I found myself laughing out loud at some of his stories, and nodding in agreement at other times. And all this in such a slim volume! This is a gem of a book that no pug person should be without.

One more thing: if you are considering purchasing a pug, you should know that they SHED. They shed TONS, a fact that many breed books will not share with you. Not only do they shed, but their fur (especially the fawns) is barbed, so it sticks onto clothing and upholstery with remarkable tenacity. We have killed lots of vacuums in our quest to subdue the pug hair, but it continues to overwhelm us on a regular basis. I mention this only because a good number of pugs are turned in to rescue because the owner claims "I didn't know they shed so much. I thought shorthaired dogs didn't shed!" Not so. Trust me! If you can get past the tumbleweeds of fuzz, though, pugs really are the best, sweetest, funniest, most loveable dogs you could ever hope to share your life with. We adore them, and so does Phil Maggitti!

5 out of 5 stars very informative!!.......2005-08-02

the book is great and I really feel it has alot of information on how to train pugs... I will be a first time dog owner when I finally get a pug and I feel I have learned alot about dogs and how to handle the situations that pugs can get themselves into without hurting the dogs progress in training or their feelings!!

2 out of 5 stars this book isn't bad, but it's quite thin.......2005-07-08

Maybe I was hoping for too much? But I didn't find it particularly in depth. I still had lots of grooming, health and vaccination questions.

On the other hand...this isn't a generic dog health/training book. And the author has several pugs and knows the breed's quirks.

It's the most entertaining dog breed book I've ever read, but not the most informative.

5 out of 5 stars I have a puppy.......2005-03-23

If you're thinking about a pug, buy this book. I have a puppy, and I warn you, they are a handful. Play, play, chew, chew, eat, sleep. And play some more. Then some more. They're naturally clownish, which makes up for their underpowered brains. They're also slow to train because of that lack of brains. Personally, I think that anyone who's going to get a pug should get two, so they can keep each other company. Funniest dogs in the world and they'll make you laugh all the time, but if you want something you won't have to pay attention to, get a cat.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of info!.......2003-12-23

This book is really great! I purchased it and two other books about pugs and this is by far the best of the three.

Book Description

A new evil threatens Midkemia, its web stretching from the deepest criminal underworld all the way up to the highest seats of power in ancient Kesh. And the Conclave of Shadows, charged unexpectedly with the training of two apprentices, must also best powerful agents of the darkest magic . . . for the fate of two worlds lies in the balance.

The New York Times bestselling author and master of fantasy Raymond E. Feist returns to his signature world of Midkemia in this first book in a gripping new trilogy that ushers in the third, and most dramatic, Riftwar yet: the Darkwar.

In the middle of the night on Sorcerer's Isle, the powerful sorcerer Pug is awakened from a nightmare that portends destruction for all of Midkemia. Disturbed by the dream, Pug calls for a convening of the Conclave of Shadows. Though Pug does not yet know it, his son Magnus has discovered the cause of Pug's prophetic dream: a beacon has been unleashed, directing a vast army of alien invaders to Midkemia, an army so formidable that even the might of the Tsurani Empire might fall before its fury.

Meanwhile, in far Stardock town, two boys are coming of age. But on the dusty path that leads them from home they are thrust by fate into a life undreamed of, becoming enmeshed in intrigue, murder, and treason. Though untrained and unready, they are called upon by the mysterious Conclave to travel deep into the heart of the Empire of Great Kesh, to confront a plot so dark and twisted it will implicate even the highest-ranking nobles of the Empire, even members of the royal family itself. And behind this plot they discover the ancient Brotherhood of Death, the clan of assassins known as the Nighthawks.

And Pug will find himself once again facing his old nemesis, the evil wizard formerly known as Sidi, now Leso Varen, in a confrontation with everything at stake: his honor, his life, and the future of Midkemia.

5 out of 5 stars more midkemia goodness.......2007-10-11

Feist does it again with this one. if you liked the rest of his works then definitely get this one. otherwise, this is about 20th in the series and not much would make sence. start with Magician: Apprentice first.

3 out of 5 stars More formula.......2007-08-08

Mr. Feist is a very good writer. I started out with his
modern day "Faerie Tale", then "Shadow of a Dark Queen" and the
rest of the Serpentwar books, the went back and read the
rest of the Midkemia books in order. Mr Feist seems to follow
a typical 'Fantasy formula', but has an excellent talent for
making us care about the characters, much better than most
authors. I was glad to see a bit more about Kesh, too, though
it seemed to follow what one would expect from an 'Arabian Nights'
Aladdin saga. I get attached to characters, and with Mr. Feist's
talent for developing a rapport between reader and character, I
don't want too see people die....but in reality they do, and maybe Mr. Feist
gets a bit too attached to his own creations.
Nakor is great, obviously one thinks of veteran actor Mako in the role.
The Talnoys make me think of the Storm troopers from "Star Wars", though
that's just a vague visual connection in my own mind :p

5 out of 5 stars Hurray Pug's back!.......2007-07-13

Finally, Fiest brings back Pug, one of my favorite fantasy characters, into an interesting new series that I'm looking forward to finishing. While the plot was interesting, it was a little confusing at first, but that is only a minor setback. This book also does a lot to set up for the rest, so it reveals only a little and keeps much shrouded in mystery.
Still, Fiest is a great writer, and this book, while not perfect and not nearly as good as Magician, is no exception.

4 out of 5 stars The Saga Continues.......2007-05-31

I am a Feist fan, and as such this book is an automatic choice. It is not Feist's best work, but it is a worthwhile addition, and it does present some changes in that the conclave is the center of this book (and probably the series) and the magicians play a major role.

The book is set mostly in Kesh, which is a pleasing surprise. The creation of Midkemia is by now so well developed I was so far a little disapointed at not having all major nations covered by the plot. The previous series covered the region of Roldem and this one takes us further away, with possible extensions to Kelewan in the next installment.

It's certainly not a book I would recommend for new readers of Feist, but if you reached this far in the Midkemia series, it's a must.

4 out of 5 stars continuing story .......2007-05-29

Holds up to the rest of the body of work for Feist. I am a bit tired of the same old thing though... still a good read, there seems to be nothing even this good from todays' writers of the genre.

Book Description

They may be small, round and sweet, but the mugs on these pugs can't always be believed. Hidden beneath the big eyes and innocent-looking faces often lurks a pug who has waddled to the wrong side of the tracks. Petty theft, bribery, fraud, vandalism, even lewd and lascivious behavior are well documented in the mug shots of these pugs caught in the act of their pernicious crimes. Humorous? Yes. Funny? Not if you believe that pugs should be a little more decorous than this unruly bunch.

Wackiest pug book EVER! I have two pugs and I love to cuddle with them and read this book to them. I have never seen such risks taken in pug photography! Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Pugs Amok.......2007-05-01

One must be wary of an animal that owns the owner. So cute that misbehaving goes excused. This book may give us a glimpse of pugs gone amok, bad wiring.
On a lighter side this book makes a great gift and can brighten anyones day!

5 out of 5 stars Truly Funny!.......2007-02-09

This is one of the very best Pug books I have seen or owned, and I have quite a few (Pug ownership is a kind of cult, I think). The "crimes" in the book are true to the breed and the pictures are excellent, but the best part is the hilarious descriptions of purely Pug behavior.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Book.......2007-01-22

For all pug lovers (and dog lovers) out there, you will love this book. It is hilarious, and totally captures the personalities of the pugs in the book, and pugs in general, completely. My husband, nephew, niece and I loved this book, and could not stop laughing at the hilarious little stories and pictures.

this little book was delightful, definitely what i had hoped for. the illustrations for each short story were amusing and creative, while the anecdotes were original and imaginative and full of humor. it was the perfect gift for a relative who dotes on his pug.

You would think that a 12-pound dog would know her place in the world. Well, you obviously haven't met Clara, the pug that rules writer Margo Kaufman's life and the topic of discussion in Clara: The Early Years, Kaufman's hilarious account of living with the imperious pug. Kaufman, author of This Damn House! and the Hollywood correspondent for Pug Talk magazine, admits to being the "Official Pug Lollipop," a fact that Clara takes full advantage of. From their first meeting in a New York hotel room, Kaufman knows that Clara is "different": "Five minutes after her arrival, she inspected our junior suite like Leona Helmsley checking to see if the chocolate mints on the pillows were lined up at the right angles. Clara noticed the spacious queen-sized bed, the plush carpet, and the cozy loveseat in my sitting room. She beheld the cold hard floor--tile, not even marble--in her tiny bathroom. And she realized that the Human had put her own comfort over the pug's--a serious error that must be corrected at once so the Human would not make this mistake again." Sure, most people would have run screaming from the little Hitler, but not Kaufman. She's instantly smitten with the tiny, "bat-eared," "jack-o'-lantern"-toothed puppy, as the whole world soon would be. Joining Kaufman on book tours, stealing the show with her designer doggy cap and natural on-air charm, posing for photographs (to be used in dog-food endorsements, no less), and generally hamming it up and handing out orders, Clara comfortably stakes her claim to the Kaufman clan--including fellow pug Sophie. But when Kaufman and her husband decide to adopt Nicholas, a Siberian orphan, Clara feels the limelight slipping away. Wrapped in bureaucratic red tape, the adoption process involves not only months of paper pushing but a trip to Siberia that just about puts Clara over the top. Luckily, the persnickety pug accepts Nicholas into the fold and all is well in Clara's universe. As for the Kaufmans, well, indentured servitude to a pug isn't so bad. Kaufman's witty observations--combined with Clara's unforgettable antics--make for a memorable read. --Stefanie Hargreaves

Book Description

"Before Clara, I was not a Pet Parent. The Pugs were dogs. Cute dogs, willful dogs, lovable to be sure, but I was Human. I was in charge. Then along came Clara, and all bets were off."--Margo Kaufman, from Clara

Acclaimed columnist Margo Kaufman fell in love with pugs when she was nineteen. But none of her previous pets could compare with Clara, a glossy black, twelve-pound package of pug charm and pugnacity with the face of an imp, the heart of a ham, the seductive skills of a slut, and the deductive gifts of a genius. It didn't take long for Clara to let her new pug parents know who was ruling their California household--whether she's sipping Evian from a cut-crystal bowl at Saks, or performing a star turn on PrimeTime Live. Filled with the author's trademark wit and dry observations, Clara is the hilarious and heartwarming story of the unforgettable pug.

5 out of 5 stars i owe so much to this book........2007-08-14

After stumbling upon this book in a tiny country bookshop, i read it in just a few days and fell deeply in love with pugs. i was completely charmed my the author's dogs, especially Clara, and soon i had rescued my own little black pug from a shelter. My pug goes with me everywhere, and as the author states, "is living proof that god has a sense of humor." these little dogs make me laugh every day, and this book will make you laugh on every page. Clara, Margo, and their adventures in LA will have you splitting your sides, and whether this is your first introduction to pugs, or your a long time lover of the breed, you will relate to and be touched by this book in unexpected ways.

4 out of 5 stars Clara-Quick Read.......2007-07-08

I really enjoyed the first half of the book, after all we do have two black
pugs, but the second half was more about their adoption of a foreign baby and the pug story got left by the wayside.

3 out of 5 stars This book is great for pug lovers.......2006-10-26

but for those of us going through adoption, it was a bit cold. I actually shuddered when she spoke of her reluctance towards adopting a Chinese girl. I might be overly sensitive here, but it did strike me a bit racist. I also have a puggy whom I adore, but if there's any problem between her and my to be adopted daughter, I'm afraid that puggy will have to go live at my mum's. Anyone who isn't ready to put their human child first really isn't ready for parenthood (on the bright side, the author eventually did come around to putting her son first, but I've seen quite a few couples who were so wrapped up with their dogs that it's like the kid should be kept in a cage, and that's not right. This is why people like Caesar Milan exist to teach yuppies the importance of treating dogs like dogs and not spoiling them as children).
Overall, very interesting story. I'm sorry that the author lost her battle to cancer. Unlike one of the other posters, my first thought wasn't "Poor Clara", but "Poor Nickie" to have lost the only mum that he's ever really known. I'm sure that die hard dog (and especially pug) people will be mad at me for this review, but I'm not a dog person. I'm a person who happens to have a dog that I love. I agree that pugs are the only dogs cute enough to make one put up with the hassle of dog ownership (it is very costly, restricts much of your time and vacations, and there usually is something in the house to clean). I love my puggy to death, but she is absolutely my first and last dog. Hopefully, with this book, readers can get a sense of what it's really like to live with this breed (there's quite a tale about an expensive eye operation) so they can look before they leap into pug ownership.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for Pug lovers.......2006-08-25

If you don't own a Pug, you won't understand the humor. If you do, you're going to love this book!

Great book! Very practical information about what pugs need as far as bathing, skin fold wiping (beware of swamp face), and other general pug hygiene. Very practical training tips, such as belly rubbing to assure your pug that you are dominant (as well as providing a delightful belly rub) and choosing useful words for training, such as "off" instead of "no jumping," so that that your pug can be praised with the same word, for example, "Good Off," which then serves as a built-in reward (and doesn't exhaust the word "No"). Interesting and funny information on pug personalities. What's not to love about a pug?

We thought that this book was great. It has really helped us since we became new pug owners. It explained about health concerns and potty training, to what kind of toys pugs like the best. I would highly reccommend this book to anyone thinking about getting a pug!

    Book Description

Elvis, Bert, Buddha, and Busta are four pure and not-so-purebred pugs living on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. And even though they don’t have a backyard, or even a mailman to chase, they’re enjoying a dog’s life—because they know that no matter how small you are or how funny your face might be, life always has plenty of treats in store.

In this delightful book, Elvis and his coterie of pug friends offer a lesson in the art of PugTherapy—that is, the art of finding joy in life’s simple pleasures, from first kisses to bubble baths. Whether it’s a picnic in the park, a road trip with a friend, or a party dress that sets tails wagging, these everyday delights can chase away the blues and make you feel like Best in Show.

With over thirty winsome photographs accompanied by charming, inspirational text, PugTherapy gives you everything you need to reenter the puppy pageant of life—and find happiness, one pug at a time.

Having met Alison a number of times both on this side of the Atlantic at the Pug Dog Club of America National Specialties as well as at seeral Crufts shows I was curious to know what her book was like so I quickly ordered it. It arrived the day my litter of one was born. Since I was up for the night anyways I settled next to the new mom and her pugette and began to read the 128 page hardcover book. Each of the ten chapters provided interesting and very valuable information for any one who is considering getting a Pug. The first chapter introduces the breed and gives a bit of history covering their Imperial heritage, their European introduction and British royalty connections. It then crosses the Atlantic to the American Pug and brings you current with names of some rich and famous people who have been Pug fanciers. All this information is pretty much the standard fare for a book on Pugs. But the second chapter is the one that really captured my attention: Choosing a Pug. this chapter is the one that will get me to recommend this book to those who are beginning their search and are wanting, or in my estimation needing, more information on the breed. Each Chapter there after: Ariving Home, Early Lessons, Caring For Your Pug and even Problem Behavior all help someone who is soon to select their future companion to learn more about what they may expect as an owner of a Pug, puppy or adult. The next three chapters address activities owners of Pugs can do with their dog including information on Canine Good Citizen, Obedience, Agility, Freestyle, Carting, Showing, Therapy dogs, and breeding. Sprinkled throughout the book are highlights focusing on some special Pugs and their owners detailing their accomplishments. The last chapter, Health Care, is written by a Veterinarian. Thre is special attention to breed-prone problems. Although Ms Moun is from England she addressed the USA Pug Fanciers interest and concerns thourghly.
