5 out of 5 stars Little Critter Has a Secret.......2007-03-07

Little Critter has a secret. What is it? Well, that's a secret! You'll have to read the book to find out.

But what I can tell you is that this is another wonderful book in the series. Little Critter learns that it can be fun to have a secret, but it can also be hard to keep it. He has a moment of surprising understanding from his little sister when he makes a mistake. And he experiences happiness when it comes to reveal that secret.

This book is as fun as the other Little Critter books. It has a good story, full-page illustrations and fun gags throughout to catch visual interest. Little Critter's (the Mayers') honest story-telling style is no secret --- it's a winner!

5 out of 5 stars We love the Critters!.......2007-03-06

Are there any critter books we don't like? Doubtful.
They teach good lessons in a real life way.

Worth every penny.

Mercer Mayer writes wonderful books for beginning readers. My first grade daughter can read his books with relative easy, which helps her with her confidence. There are enough challenging words to keep her learning. She really enjoyed reading this book and pointing out to me how the sister was misbehaving. Rather than using the story as an excuse to misbehave, we use it as a learning tool. It is a story any parent can relate to!

Just Shopping With Mom Book Review

This story is about three little kids and their mom shopping and they keep asking her for everything. It is by Stan and Jan Berenstain. They can't stop and they keep asking and asking then their mom gets very angry and says to stop. Now the kids get mad and they want to pay for their food and they leave the store. I like the book because it is funny. If you like the Berenstain Bears, you will like it, too!

2 out of 5 stars Not very charming -- and taught my son some bad habits.......2000-08-31

My two-and-a-half-year old son loves the Little Critter books, but his mom and dad aren't nearly so fond of them. The books are fairly short, simply written and cover day-to-day topics (like taking a bath, or sharing with a friend, or in this case, taking a shopping trip with mom) from the young child's perspective, which probably explains why my son enjoys hearing them. But after reading several of these books, my son began mimicking the bad behavior illustrated in them (presumably intended by the author to get the young reader to laugh at and learn from the miscreant). He quickly learned how to whine "I want [fill in the blank]" just like the obnoxious kid sister in this book, having never done it before. Sure, it's probably a phase he would have entered anyway, but the fact that he is quoting, verbatim, bratty dialogue from various Critter books makes me loathe to recommend them to other parents. As an aside, I find the books rather charmless and the illustrations -- bizarre snaggle-toothed characters dressed in 19th-century clothing but depicted in 20th-century America -- bizarre and sometimes unsettling.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not Quite as Expected.......1999-07-09

I don't like to cut down someone else's hard work, but the book is a little pricey for what you get. First of all, the intro leads me to believe that the writer of the book never has owned a golden. Big minus there. He does make some good observations that will make you smile, though, which brings value back to the book and some of the commentary is right on the money. Secondly, there are some beautiful photos, but be aware there are several of them are just so-so, showing several consecutive photos of the same thing with the same dog on the same occasion. Some are probably not much different than the ones you have in your own photo album. This was a bit disappointing. This is a good book to collect if you collect golden books or golden paraphenalia or are looking for a decent coffee table book, but I don't think it's quite as good as it could be.

5 out of 5 stars Dale Spartas knows Goldens!.......1998-06-27

I bought this book because, after perusing it in the bookstore, I kept saying YES as I read the commentary about my chosen breed. Anyone who has ever owned (or been owned) by this wonderful breed will delight in the text and gorgeous photographs. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who has a Golden Retriever!

5 out of 5 stars Just Goldens? Just Wonderful!.......1998-05-07

This is the definitive book for anyone who has been, or is planning to be owned by a 24-karat dog.

    4 out of 5 stars A touching tribute to a special breed.......1997-02-07

Any Golden Retriever human companion who can read this without a tear in their eye must have had a lobotomy. The author's limited words are right on the mark. And the photographs capture the essence of "goldenness". I could only hope for even higher quality printing

4 out of 5 stars Just Like Dad by Myriah Rangel.......2005-12-02

The title of this book, is Just Like Dad. It's by Gina, and Mercer Mayer. I liked this book, because it shows how the son wants to grow up like his dad. It teaches him things, that he will grow up to do. My favorite character was the little critter because, he always wanted to be just like dad, but with a little twist to it.

4 out of 5 stars Just like Dad.......2003-09-24

The book "Just like Dad" is about a boy who wants to be just like his dad when he grows up. The lesson I think it taught was how to have a role model and to choose a person to look up to. I think that this book is great for any age because it teaches an awesome lesson and it really warms the heart and reminds you of your childhood and how you looked up to someone. I think this book was very good it was so heartwarming to see the relationship he has with his dad and to know how much he looks up to him.

3 out of 5 stars Poor Little Critter.......2003-02-13

Little Critter, for all intents and purposes, is supposed to represent everychild. His yearnings for an adult life consume his present-day thoughts and activities, thereby robbing him (or her) of the pleasures experienced in childhood. Oh, you poor, sweet Little Critter. You'll grow up soon enough and begin to endure the complexities of adolescence. You'll be bombarded by love, hate, fear, joy, lust, greed, and numerous other personal idiosyncracies that left unmanaged, will turn you into someone your own mother may not recognize. Aside from the psychological obstacles placed in your path, you also have the physical appearance of some sort of giant mutant rat. That will cause you much grief as you enter the "real world," because people are cruel, and not used to coexisting with unnaturely-sized rodents, especially those who walk on their hind legs and wear human clothes.

I read this book expecting to find a depiction of pain and suffering that was overcome by sheer determination and desire; a story, if you will, of one being (rat, mouse, wolverine, I'm still not sure what he is) who just wanted to have his father consider him an equal. Instead, I found a very weak plot that involved this little "critter" envisioning all the things he would do when he got older.

In reading this book, I believed that the creature took a lot for granted. Envisioning growing up means that you are planning for a future life. If the times we live in have taught us anything, it is that there may not be a future life. Considering the triple threat of Bin Laden, Hussein, and the proliferation of teen pop stars, our time above the surface of the earth may be limited, or at the very least become seemingly unbearable. Another point is that the book depicted absolutely no negative real world situations such as taxes, spousal infidelity, pathetic network programming, or Jesse Helms.

In summary, if you have a chance to read this book, do so with the knowledge that Little Critter and his family are living sheltered lives. I understand that there is a series of these books. Perhaps in either a previous volume or one in the future, the author can more clearly define exactly what kind of creatures these beings are, and where they live. I might want to move there myself.

    5 out of 5 stars A+.......2002-11-04

This book is very good. It's about wanting to be just like you dad. Which most kids do want to be like their dad, little critter explains how he'll be able to watch anything he wants to on television but still won't watch the news. He copies his dad on a lot of things that he does, but little critter could get into the way sometimes. It's a good read for the little ones and an excellent addition to anyone's Mercer Mayer collection. I am 12 and I still enjoy picking up a Little Critter book every once and awhile, they have great morals. I rate this a 5 out of 5.

    5 out of 5 stars Fun.......2000-06-01

In this book Little Critter tells us all of the things he wantsto do just like his dad. Of course, Little Critter puts a differentspin on some things that he'll do "just like dad" when he's older. Example: He'll be able to watch whatever he wants on tv, but he won't watch the news. This is a great book for your little ones. As with all of the Little Critter books, the illustrations turn an average story into a funny book.

5 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT BOOK.......2007-02-10

Perfect for a long winter's night...My favorite was Judith McNaught naturally:):):). It was a continuation of her series Whitney My Love and Until You. They are all on my KEEPER shelf. Have already read them a few times. Books to die for.

    4 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it a lot!!.......2005-08-21

I really enjoyed Judith McNaught's story the most. But they were all entertaining. There's a nice mix of historical and contemporary romance.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but could have been better.......2001-04-14

I am a big Judith McNaught fan and I was looking forward to reading Nicky's story. I had hoped that the author would have written a full-length novel for this fascinating character, originally introduced in Whitney My Love and recurring in Until You. I would have loved to see more details on the characters' developing relationship; it would have made it more believable.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect Christmas anthology.......2001-01-03

I normally don't care for anthologies, for two principal reasons. First, many stories in these anthologies suffer from being over-short; the usual 70 - 100 pages is simply not sufficient to develop the storyline in a sufficiently satisfying manner. Second, there is always at least one story in each collection which is disappointing and lets the others down.

However, I saw this book in, of all places, a bookshop in Manchester (yes, in the UK). An import, at a very reasonable price, so I decided to give it a try. And I'm delighted I did, having had several days of very satisfying reading from five authors, none of whose work I had read before.

These stories all have a strong Christmas theme, which is done properly, in sharp contract to many Christmas-themed books these days in which the festive season gets perhaps a couple of lines at the end with no other mentions anywhere in the book. Each story in this anthology *feels* Christmassy, in different ways. And yet each story is very different. There are two contemporary romances in US settings, two British historical romances (in the Victorian period, though again each very different), and one time-travel, again set in the US.

We have a modern career woman reunited with the childhood hero who devastated her years ago by a careless act; a still-grieving widow who discovers that the boss of whom she thoroughly disapproves has an incredibly romantic heart; a poverty-stricken young woman finds out how it feels to play the role of angel to a lonely widower and his son; a young Victorian choolmistress enters into an arranged marriage with a reclusive Earl so that his orphaned niece will have a governess, and quickly finds a way to melt his frozen heart; and a 1990s woman is transported back to Pioneer country, finding herself married to the man of her dreams.

I loved each and every one of these short stories. None - well, except perhaps the last, which ended a little abruptly - seemed over-short or insufficiently well developed. And each had its share of humour, angst, romance and heartwarming seasonal cheer.

    Highly recommended!

    Book Description

Little Critter's class is learning about good manners. LC explains the list compiled by the class of things to say and do that are considered good manners, and when it's appropriate to say and do them, like saying: please, thank you, excuse me; covering your mouth when you sneeze, keeping your elbows off the table when you eat, sharing, etc. He's surprised that some things are considered good manners (like the elbows thing) and has a hard time with others, like saying sorry when he does something wrong. LC describes a day when he tries to remember his manners, sometimes succeeding and sometimes not. The class keeps track of how members behave and LC is pleased to discover that he's doing pretty well. This is a low-key treatment of the subject, filled with sly humor and illustrated in Mercer Mayer's trademark style.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, Warm Story.......2005-10-24

"Just a Thunderstorm" by Gina and Mercer Mayer is intersting in that it's told from the perspective of Little Critter's little sister, rather than Little Critter himself. The two are playing outside when it starts getting windy and their Mom says that a thunderstorm is coming. Sure enough, it starts raining soon, but Little Sister says that she's not scared because there's only a little thunder. A power outage is turned into a campout and for a while things are all right. But when it comes time to go to bed, Little Sister is scared because the thunder is really really loud. Little Sister tries all sorts of things to keep from being scared, but nothing helps. Then, her Dad tells her some of the good things about thunderstorms, but it still doesn't help. Ultimately, Little Sister comes to accept her fear of thunderstorms.

All pages in this book are fully illustrated and the story is fairly short and easy to follow. Kids can read this themselves, or have it read to them. There are a couple of ongoing gags as well to add visual interest.

5 out of 5 stars Great for helping young children process fears.......2000-06-16

Last night in the midst of a loud and scary storm my two-yearold kept asking me for something. It took me a few minutes tounderstand that she was saying, "Thunder book." So we went to our bookshelves in search of this book, which has been a favorite of hers since it first came into our home. (She also loves her little critter CDrom of "Just Grandma and Me") Last night I read the book three times and my husband read it twice, before my daughter said, "Thunder all gone" and was ready to move on to another book. This is the first time I've seen her use a book to process/normalize fears, and I think it's wonderful. Even though this is supposed to be for the 4-8 year old, all young children are fascinated by storms. The book doesn't minimize the scary aspects, but does give examples of ways of dealing with fear (reading a book, listening to a tape, climbing into bed with a brother) and talks about the positive aspects of thunderstorms (the adventure, roasting marshmallows in the fireplace when the lights go out, splashing in puddles the next day, and the fact that storms help flowers grow). My only complaint is that the children do end up sleeping in their parents room which is something we're currently trying to discourage. But I'm very grateful for this book.

    Book Description

A new kid has moved in next door to Little Critter and his family. He's a nice kid but he's just a little bit different: his mother is a rabbit and his father is a turtle. This timely story about prejudice and friendship is filled with Mercer Mayer's trademark humor.

    5 out of 5 stars Aren't we ALL a little different?.......2007-05-08

What a charming way to introduce the subject of differences among people/characters! The message was lovingly presented and could easily be accepted by even then youngest readers: We're all a little "different".

5 out of 5 stars Our Differences make us special.......2004-11-06

title appealed to me as the parent to two special needs children. I saw the cover and placed the book in my cart at the store when purchasing videos. We have a collection of a Little Golden Book stories, as well as numerous books by Gina and Mercer Mayer.

The book is written from the Little Critter's perspective beginning with the arrival of the new neighbor Zack and his family. Zack has rabbit ears like his Mother with a turtle shell like his Father.

The two families greet one another by shaking hands on the front lawn. The girl critters have bows in their hair and the Mothers always have an apron on. Later in the day the critters have baseball practice when the subject about asking Zack to join gets shot down. The little critter speaks to his parents about how his friends made him mad by rejecting Zack. His Mother explains the good in being different.

This family discussion takes place in the living room with the dog sleeping on the floor and the mouse and cat at the top of the couch. The Father has a magazine in his lap with the Mother laying a book on her lap. The expressions on their faces are very thorough showing the father thinking with his arm on his knee.

Just A Little Different shows how even kids at first make judgements based on looks and similarities. This helps in showing how to reach out to others that may be different in appearance and the positive results once you get to know someone. The message is clear that persistence pays off and the family comes together to discuss how the critter feels in the beginning.

The book shares the point that one person/critter can make a difference in how they perceive others. Once all the critters stopped looking at Zack and saw him for the fun person he was they got past the first impressions.

There are many lessons in this short book that is easy to read and follow along with great pictures of the critters and surroundings. Each book in the Mayer's Little Critter series sends a message and offers tips for living life in various situations. Whether a new baby is arriving or time spent with a parent or a book about feelings, these are worth so much more than the small price tag placed on them.

5 out of 5 stars Help for parents of biracial kids with questions.......2003-04-11

I am a single mom of an "almost" four year old (as my daughter would say)biracial child. Although I live in a pretty diverse city (Philadelphia), there exists much ignorance, prejudice and real cruelty with respect to the questions, stares and comments people make when I am with my daughter. Even as far as going to parks and people thinking I am the au pair for my child. Despite the growing number of biracial children being born, some people still don't get it. My daughter has started making observations about her skin tone being different than mine, her eyes being different than mine, etc. This book was a wonderful way for me to start talking with my child about why she is different than children who are "all black" or "all white" and that there's nothing wrong with her...that sometimes people are just unsure. I use this book to let her know that being biracial is actually pretty darn special. That she has the best of both worlds in terms of culture and ethnicity...and to teach her to embrace that and not be upset by other's ignorance. The book helped me to teach her that as long as she continues to be her beautiful, lovable, fun self, people who are worth being friends with will be honored to be her friends....for the rest of the crowd who doesn't....it's their loss.

I would HIGHLY recommend this book to parents of biracial children.

    Holly in Philly.

4 out of 5 stars Be kind to others who are different than you.......2000-12-13

I bought this book because my 5 year old son goes to a school with very little diversity, not by design, but due to geography. He now understands that being different isn't a bad thing. It is the differences that make each of us special. I wanted to stress to him that just because someone looks different doesn't mean he/she cannot be your friend. It's hard to be the new kid and look different. I hope now my son will not shy away from someone who is different, and rather, invite him/her into his activities and get to know him/her. In the book, the Little Critter discovered that the new kid, Zack, was fun and stuck with him even when his friends shyed away.

    3 out of 5 stars Teaches "don't judge a book by it's cover", but..........1999-10-20

It's an okay book. It tries to relate human inter-racial marriages and it's offsprings through a 'animal gender mixed marriage and it's offspring', dealing with why children of inter-racial parents look different. However, the book could have gone more indepth with dealing with why the Rabbit was married to the Turtle, therefore resulting in an offsprings who was half rabbit and half turtle. The book does teach a "don't judge a book by its cover" lesson, and it's reading level should not be placed at Baby-Preschool, but placed more at Preschool-Teen. When I began to read the first page of the book to my 4-year old daughter, and it read that "Zack is different." "His mother is a rabbit and his father is a Turtle." She looked at the moving furniture man (in the background) and said that he should be the father; the furniture man was...a rabbit. She has already preconceived what society is telling her is to be the 'correct way', and that is why there needs to be more children books readily available that deal with inter-racial couples, marriages and bi-,multi-racial children. I think the book should have explained why the Rabbit and Turtle were married (love). And why Zack 'looks' the way he does (made by two people who love one another and wanted to bring someone special into this world, despite their 'outer' appearance).
