2 out of 5 stars Re-publication of Articles from Practical Horseman Magazine.......2007-03-03

I'm sure I overlooked the disclaimer, but it appears this book is a compilation of the series of "Practical Horseman" magazine articles that Ms. Gray authored several years back. Still good information, of course, but I wouldn't have purchased that book had I known that. (I saved the magazine articles to a binder, you see.)

4 out of 5 stars Should be a 4.50, but there's no intermediate step on the stars.......2007-01-29

Let me start by saying, I really think this is a good book to have in one's library. Why? In succinct, but not short or even overly brief statements, Lendon Gray provides chunks of information that neither overwhelm nor talk down to the reader.
Having ridden twice in the Olympics, she knows obviously a lot more about dressage than most of us. What makes this book a pleasure is the presentation. She does it on a straight-forward approach as if talking to someone who is on the same level as her. There is a sense of equality between writer and reader's level of knowledge. In other words, she does not come across as a "I know it all and you know nothing."

All the information throughout the 25 lessons are chunked into small pieces, each comes with a succinct heading that gives the reader a clue as to what she will talk about in the next third or so column. What made this book very useful to me are the images of "right / correctly" and "wrong / incorrectly" applied principles. She details what can be done to correct wrong workings in very good depth, which makes this very useful for either between lessons or for those who do not have the opportunity of working with a dressage trainer on a regular basis.

I can recommend this book for most levels of riding, but believe that as with many books, it will be most useful to those who work in Training through lower Level 2 stages. Advanced Level 2 through Grand Prix riders will be far to knowledgeable to get a great deal of use out of this. But for the majority of riders, I think this book is great and it delivers what it set out to do: teach from start of riding to the first competition. It also provides a great place to go back and figure out "what went wrong" to help correct problems that creep up in riding.

4 out of 5 stars Lessons with Lendon.......2006-06-27

The book is well written so the average person who is either starting out or is early in a riding carrer will benefit. I particularly liked the fact that she believes all basic dressage will help in what ever riding carrer you may wish to take. She spells out the riders total responsiblity verses the horse which I found to be very refreshing. I gave it 4 stars only because it was pitched below where I thought the book was based on the reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Lessons with Lendon.......2004-10-28

This book is a reprint of a series Lendon Grey did for Practical Horseman Magazine some years ago. Excellent book, well done with very clear concepts and goals. The lessons are set up in a very logical order with lots of pointers on how to make the exercises work for you and your horse and what to do if you are not getting the right response. Each chapter ends with a riding challenge. This book is well worth the money, a great resource for student and teacher alike. You will return to it over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2004-08-27

I found this book helpful. It is easy to understand and also has pictures for those who are more visual in their learning process. It covers a lot of the basics, which some need to go back to to help them in the more advanced movements of dressage. Dressage can be very initimidating with the language that is used, but this book explains terminology and concepts. This book also has "Lendons Challenges" which cover the more common errors riders tend to make when doing the different movements. The only fault I found was the majority of horses are wearing flash nosebands. To me this is a fashion of the times and curbs the horses potential.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great book for theory..........2007-01-14

No one can deny that Klimke was an incredible rider and trainer. The book reflects his experience and opinions about dealing with young horses. He encourages a careful and practiceds application of the aids in order to develop suppleness, throughness, and impulsion. while the book does a good job in describing the "ideal" I was hoping for more "how-to" logistics. The section on longeing does that in discussing the best equipment, how to attach side reins correctly, etc., but the remainder of the book is less "applied" and more "theoretical."

I have to say that I also object to other assumptions in the book about the general horse-owning population. For instance, Klimke says that in the first week at the barn, he only allows the grooms to handle the newly arrived horse and he is careful not to have any interaction during that time. Okkkkkkkk....

Despite some rather elitist assumptions, it's a good reference book for reading about how training for young horses should proceed--but it's short on practicalities and does not offer a very precise training program.

5 out of 5 stars Oldie but Goodie.......2006-12-04

This book, written by the late olympic dressage champion Reiner Klimke, is surely a standard reference. The English translation by Sigrid Young might be a little bit awkward at times (very noticable for a German native who owns the original, too), but the spirit and straightforwardness of Klimke's approach for the basic training of a dressage horse still comes across.

4 out of 5 stars Compact, yet informative........2004-01-12

This compact, informative and economical guide to starting young horses provides an excellent overview of training the young horse, from early ground work to starting over fences. Although the book is dated, the German scale of basic training principles is timeless and very much en vogue in the dressage community today. Based on sound principles and written by an accomplished horseman, this is one to read.
UPDATE - A year since my original review this has been the book I refer back to most of all, I think because of the handy size. Therefore, this book is well worth the money!!!

3 out of 5 stars Basic Training?.......2003-05-20

I thoguht this book was great because it is small and easy to carry to the barn. The pictures help you remember what you read in a "jiffy". Some of the information seems old and maybe a litle out of date but overall I think its a book thats good for anyone with a horse in training.

3 out of 5 stars Basic Training of the Young Horse.......2001-07-04

While Klimke lays the basic foundation of dressage training, he speaks from a perspective that is far removed from most American dressage lovers. Most don't have full time grooms and the ability to turn their horses out to pasture in the summer.

3 out of 5 stars The New Basic Training of the Young Horse.......2007-07-27

I am a huge fan of both Ingrid and her father, however I was a bit disappointed in their book. They seem to talk about general things "you want this and not this", but don't tell you how to do "this" and not teach "this". If I knew how to do it I supposed I'd already know it was correct. I had hoped it was more specific for we riders who have not atttained FEI status. I would like to have seen more step by step on some of the big issues like ground control and how to have masterful hands. Some movements are explained, but not all.
It was interesting to read what they think is correct and how they manage and treat their horses. I'm not sure that this should be in every dressage trainer's library. Some of the other books by other master riders are much more helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Great for starting youngsters.......2007-02-17

I've been riding all my life, but wanted to understand some basic philosophies of getting a young jumper started. I found this book to be very helpful in laying that foundation. If you've never owned/ridden before, then you may want to seek some personalized attention from an experience horseperson. But if you're a good rider already, you'll enjoy this book.

3 out of 5 stars BASIC training.......2007-06-28

I was a little bit disappointed with this book. The information is good I guess it's the way the book is formatted or the writing that I didn't care for. But there is a lot of information on just about everything you want to know.

5 out of 5 stars A very underappreciated book!.......2007-03-13

In light of the popularity of horse whisperers like Clinton Anderson, John Lyons, Pat Perelli and Monty Roberts, certain trainers who are less focused on making money and more focused on the horses they are training have fallen somewhat to the wayside. These two wonderful women are two such trainers. Their methods are practical, their book is full of helpful and accurate information that often gets better results than anything Lyons can do. Of course, as with all horse training books, you have to understand that there will be some things that you don't agree with or that don't work with your horse, but these women are open with that as well.

All-in-all, this book is wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars A must for any horseman's library.......2007-02-13

I checked this book out of the public library. Even though it was written almost 30 years ago, the horse training wisdom it contains is timeless. The book speaks of some of the same things my riding instructor has taught me, as well as some of the things I hope to advance to later. The topics covered in this book will help everyone, from all riding disciplines, from breeders handling their foals, to Olympians schooling their mounts. This book truly is a must read for all horse handlers/owners. I will be buying my own copy as I have to give the library their's back.

5 out of 5 stars Not so Basic after all!.......2006-03-17

My goodness this book is the gathering of knowledge I was just hoping for! It is not at all "just the basics". I am so pleased with this book, and my horse is doing wonderfully! It will be awhile before we cover those advanced topics, but I am certain we will get to those too. I highly recommend this read for every level of horse owner. It has something for everyone, beginner to advanced.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic All Around Information for the Horse Person!.......1998-06-29

I originally bought the companion book Basic Riding by these two knowledgeable horsewomen. Then someone recommended this book to me when I had to teach my horse how to work on a lunge-line. It is incredible how the authors are able to present their information to accommodate many levels of horsepeople - from beginner through advanced - for western/stock, dressage/hunter/jumper, driving, etc.

I recommend these books every opportunity I have for the teenage through adult horse person who wants to have a strong background in overall horse training and riding. During the last 3 years, since I have owned these books, I have gone back to them repeatedly. I only wish I had them 6 years ago when I returned to riding.

5 out of 5 stars Excellant!.......2006-01-28

I love this book. I have read through it many times and would recomend this book to anyone who has horses. It teaches you how to train a green horse from square one. He teaches you how to lead your horse, how to do a high stepping trot, how to longe, how to do flying lead changes, and so on. Jam packed with lots of good information.

5 out of 5 stars Breaking and Training the Stock Horse.......2003-12-07

This book was the most facinating book on training a horse I have ever read. Once you understand the process; put it to work; you will be amazed at how easy it is to train by this method. Uses all leg aids, body shifting, no pressure on mouth, no kicking or tugging. I have used it on a number of horses with great results. Horses learn with no stress. Be sure they know what you are asking of them before you go on to next levels. Wonderful basic training for either western or english riding - using snaffle or curb bit. It's the body language that works with horse and rider, not the equipment. I swear by Mr. Williamson's methods. Would work real well with Monty Roberts gentle approach to communicating with the horses' natural senses.

5 out of 5 stars the only horse book needed.......2000-06-07

Having been a horse trainer and riding instructor for the past 20 years, this is the best book I have found to use for both new horse owners and riders. it should be a "have to" for all horse people.

5 out of 5 stars It is the only book the horses have read, too........1999-06-28

When we started Greentree Ranch in 1962, a dear friend gave us a copy of this book. After reading and using the methods described herein we discovered how dear that friend really was. My mother always said, "It is the only book the horses have read, too." and she was right. We have used it as the basis of our training here on the ranch since we began and will probably use it forever.

5 out of 5 stars Straight Forward and very informative.......1998-05-15

Extermely well written book that allows the reader to gain the knowledge to train their own horse. His easy to use well explained methods are great for the novice and begineer alike. He always has the horses best interest in mind. He covers the basics as well as many advanced manuvers. He was far ahead of his times with his horse training abilities. Master horseman Roy Yates is a Charles O'Williamson practioner if any are interested. END

    Book Description

The upsurge of interest in versatile ranch horses, cow working, and reining will make this book popular with western riders. Truskauskas-Knott, whose equestrian books are noted for their clear and easy-to-follow instruction, explains how to train the more advanced western exercises, whether for reining, stock work, pleasure or trail. She advocates re-evaluating cues and aids to make sure they achieve accurate, timely results and provides step-by-step illustrated lessons for teaching spins, stops, lead changes, etc. Training is more of a mental endeavor than many people realize, and this book encourages trainers to think about what they are telling their horses and to understand how horses think and learn.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Average rider.......2006-07-20

I have bought many different kinds of horse training/riding books and this has been one of the better ones. I find that most books have a lot of pictures but little explaination or little explanation that I can understand. This book was very straight forward. The explanations the author gives are very easy to understand, but not so basic that you feel like he's talking down to you. I also found the illustrations to be very useful. I sometimes find that the pictures in books can be confusing or misleading. The sketches in this book make it very easy to see what the rider is trying to point out.
I have really found this book to be a big help. The ideas are a little different then what I have been used to seeing but they have worked very well. If you are looking for a book that has a lot to offer at a decent price - I really recomend Basic Horse Training!

This book has been very helpful for my teenage daugher. We have read almost every training manual there is. This one has alot of
basic but important information that the others fail to mention.
My daughter and I were actually able to pinpoint some basic training tips that revealed some behaviors of ours that were confusing her horse. I would recommend this book to anyone who is
a newbie and has a horse trained for them. They will be able to
reinforce the training received, so that they can get their money's worth.

This book was excellent! It was very easy to follow with very helpful illustrations. I've looked at a lot of training books, but this one had the most complete start-to-finish approach. This book was a great find at a low price!
