Magic Tree House Box Set.......2007-10-09
What can I say about Magic Tree House Books? Wow! My eight year old son has been reading them for quite a while now. Our public library does a great job at keeping a variety but doesn't always have the one that he's just dying to read today. I hope that by giving him at least a few of his own favorites that are in this set to keep on hand at home will satisfy his very large reading appetite.
Great Books for a young boy to read.......2007-10-07
It takes a lot for me to get my son to read anything. But with these books he read them with euthusiam and read each one within a week.Magic Tree House Boxed Set 2, Books 5-8: Night of the Ninjas, Afternoon on the Amazon, Sunset of the Sabertooth, and Midnight on the Moon
Great books for little boys................2007-05-13
We read one or two chapters a night to my 5 1/2 yr. old son everynight. He loves all the topics that the books cover....dinosaurs, pirates, ninjas, etc. Great for any little boy!
Great Books.......2007-05-12
My 5 year old son loves the books. They are short enough to keep his attention, but long enough to challenge his imagination.
Great Gift.......2007-05-12
I bought these for my 6 year old grandson for his birthday. He was excited to get them, but they were laid aside for the even more exciting toys that he received. However, as the toys got boring, these books became more entertaining. Currently he is immensely enjoying reading them. They are excellent beginning readers.

Scott O'Dell won the Newbery Medal for Island of the Blue Dolphins in 1961, and in 1976 the Children's Literature Association named this riveting story one of the 10 best American children's books of the past 200 years. O'Dell was inspired by the real-life story of a 12-year-old American Indian girl, Karana. The author based his book on the life of this remarkable young woman who, during the evacuation of Ghalas-at (an island off the coast of California), jumped ship to stay with her young brother who had been abandoned on the island. He died shortly thereafter, and Karana fended for herself on the island for 18 years.
O'Dell tells the miraculous story of how Karana forages on land and in the ocean, clothes herself (in a green-cormorant skirt and an otter cape on special occasions), and secures shelter. Perhaps even more startlingly, she finds strength and serenity living alone on the island. This beautiful edition of Island of the Blue Dolphins is enriched with 12 full-page watercolor paintings by Ted Lewin, illustrator of more than 100 children's books, including Ali, Child of the Desert. A gripping story of battling wild dogs and sea elephants, this simply told, suspenseful tale of survival is also an uplifting adventure of the spirit. (Ages 9 to 12)

Enchanting and riveting, this story will stay with you.......2007-08-27
I have to smile when reading these other reviews that say this book was one of their favorites as a child. It also was mine. I've read so many books, that most times the memory of the details within them grow dim, but not with "Island of the Blue Dolphins". I can still picture the breathtaking beauty of the island where Karana spent her growing years. I still remember her joys and trials of living alone for so long, after everyone had left. Her ingenuity and strength still amazes me. I can't wait until my children are old enough so I can enjoy this Newberry book with them. It's definitely one in a million.
Island Of The Blue Dolphins!.......2007-08-19
When I was on vacation at Martha's Vinyard I went to the book store and bought Island Of The Blue Dolphins for myself and I loved it!! I love it so much because of it's beautiful discriptions and details that I can picture in my mind. This book is beautifully written and has wonderful detail of natural survival of hunting, and making friends (Rontu and Rontu-Aru and the English girl Tutok, the fox and Won-a-nee the otter). How many wonderful and beautiful adventures of exciting survival can one indian girl have? I am 10 years old and recommend this book to whoever loves reading and is a fan of detail and beauty!!!!!!!!
May be too adult for 10 or 11 yr olds.......2007-08-15

Customer Reviews:
love these cards.......2007-09-30
I highly recommend these cards as they are accurate, really beautiful and I felt a peaceful beautiful energy while using them. DV gives thorough instructions on how to use the deck and make the most of your readings. I saw the wonderful reviews on Amazon, knowing nothing about mermaids and dolphins, but decided to buy the deck, as it was one of her most popular. I attuned to Dolphin Reiki to enhance the use of these wonderful cards and recommend anyone interested in buying her deck, do the same.
Nice Deck!.......2007-07-16
As someone stated before, I too am a card fanatic. My excuse is that I need a wide variety of cards for my readings which is true, but I probably have over done it since I own close to 25 different sets. Anyway I recently bought this set after reading reviews and giving it some thought. I didn't want to buy this set at first because I didn't really know anything about mermaids and honestly, I thought they looked child-like, however I am a big Doreen Virtue fan and decided I'd go for it. After spending a little time with the cards, I found them to be quite accurate. To me, some of the card meanings are general and redundant, but I still find them to be helpful and accurate! It's a nice set!
Nice deck.......2007-06-28
to add to your collection, but I would recommend the Goddess Oracle cards by Doreen Virtue before this deck -- and I own both...
If You Love Mermaids You'll Love This Deck.......2007-06-27
Ok I admit it, I'm a oracle card junkie. I have probably about 10 different sets or types of oracle/tarot cards if not more. 3 of them are from the Doreen Virtue Collection. This set, the Magical Unicorn set and Healing with Fairies deck. Admittedly there is little variation with regards to card meanings but it doesn't stop me from appreciating any of them any less. The fact is that some people may be attracted to Angel Cards, others may feel an affinity for Mermaids and yet others a love for Unicorns. So while you may not want to buy Doreen's whole collection of card decks she offers enough of a variety that one will surely find something that meets your interest. Then perhaps move on to different line to mix things up a bit.
I am happy to stand corrected but..........2006-05-28
...I am a great Doreen Virtue fan on the whole, but I simply can't help thinking that she is simply regurgitating all the information and thoughts and insights we have heard before, in this pack. For me it is a case of re-packaging what has already been said a million times. The pictures are sweet enough, and very colourful, but I would stick to some of her other cards like the Archangel cards...I feel Doreen has simply thought
" Hmmm what mystical icon can I put on this new set to re-sell as something new ". I am cynical, but can't help thinking she is laughing all the way up her beautifully tailored sleeve as she checks her bank account.
Book Description
One unforgettable story. One thousand unforgettable SAT vocabulary words.
Alexa McCurry leads an ordinary teenager's life in upstate New York—until she embarks on a summer adventure in Central America. While working at a potentially boring internship in a marine DNA lab, she befriends a local boy, José, and a remarkable dolphin, Pecas. Together, Alexa and José uncover an ominous secret: Pecas' missing baby may be a captive at a marine biology facility. In a riveting tale of intrigue, Alexa and José work to unravel the mystery—and lead the reader on a vocabulary-expanding adventure.
The Marino Mission is a fun and painless way to master 1,000 tough SAT vocabulary words. Why spend all day looking at lists of words and definitions when you can read a gripping page-turner that incorporates SAT vocabulary words right into the text? Even better, words are defined at the bottom of each page so you don't have to flip to the back of the book to find definitions. Plus, self-tests at the end of the novel help you retain what you learn and prepare for test day. Once you open up The Marino Mission, you'll hardly know you're studying at all!

1,000 SAT I vocabulary words in a teen-friendly page-turner
Say adios to the mind-numbing word lists found in most SAT prep guides: teens will lose themselves in the fast-paced drama of The Marino Mission and emerge with a superior vocabulary. Each year, more than 2 million students take the SAT I. Now, instead of poring over word lists, they’ll encounter vocabulary in the context of a memorable novel–a recipe for much better word retention on test day. One thousand of the most commonly tested vocabulary words are sprinkled through this action-packed story, which features an exotic Latin American locale, a teenage girl and boy, a tale of intrigue surrounding a missing baby dolphin–and a brief definition of each vocabulary word, easily accessible at the bottom of the page on which each word appears. As an added test-prep bonus, the book includes vocabulary exercises at the back to help students master the words presented in the text.
Dr. Karen B. Chapman (Southborough, MA) received her PhD in molecular biology and genetics from Johns Hopkins University. She is also a writer, with a film treatment that was optioned by Paramount Studios.
Customer Reviews:
Fun for all ages........2007-08-06
My SAT prep teacher gave this book to us so we can learn a bunch of new words. It was great read! The story was fun, thought at times it seemed quirky and corny. One thing I noticed was that the author had trouble squeezing in some the words. Overall it was not hard to read. It was not boring for any of the students, and we learned plenty of words. The class took a test in the beginning to see how many vocab words we knew. It was a list of 300 SAT level words total. The class averaged about 39%. Using this book as our main vocab builder (Our teacher did not want us to memorize the words from the test) in two weeks we reached 50% and another week the class made it to 68%! Anyways these 1000 words are great for any level, there were some words the advanced kids did not know and students with less vocabulary learned many words very quickly with the help of this wonderful study aid!
My score went from a 450 to a 600 because of this book! The story was good and I am going re-read it to learn some words I may have forgotten.
Not bad........2007-04-28
I could see myself on the beach reading this book - it's as good of a plotline you can get for an SAT book, and has a plethora of SAT words embedded in it, which only minimally detracts from the storyline. The definitions on the bottom of the page are great, and it's cool to see the words that you are using in context in the story. The ending is pretty cheesy, though, but that's okay.
Unbelievably Good for an SAT Study Book.......2006-02-24
I actually bought The Mayan Mission not knowing that it was the second book in the series (see my review there). Then I read this one just for fun. Dr. Chapman did a great job mixing a hip novel (cover) with an excellent word study program. I highly recommend both books.
Recommended SAT preparation.......2005-06-25
We purchased this book on the strong recommendation of a relative, and can likewise recommend it to others, without a bone of contention...
I skim-read the story, and while the artifice used to introduce the vocabulary is a bit much for an adult, it should work well for the target audience. As the heroine is, well, - a heroine, the book might initially appeal more to young women, rather than to boys. But, any young person would probably enjoy the plot and the storyline once immersed in the book. At the risk of dating myself, I'd equate the book to Nancy Drew meets Tom Swift, updated for the 21st century... All in all, an effective and elegant solution for providing young people with a rich vocabulary while preparing them for one of the most significant examinations they must undertake.
Significantly, one-third of the book is devoted to exercises which reinforce the meaning and proper use of the myriad words introduced in the story. As repetition is the root of understanding, students would be wise to make use of this added bonus. Teachers and educators should likewise give this book strong consideration for inclusion in their curriculum and SAT-prep courses.
With the advent of a re-tooled SAT containing a much-dreaded essay component, Ms. Chapman should put her considerable creativity to work on a new book which addresses this coming challenge. I have no doubt that any such attempt would be as engaging and successful as "The Marino Mission."
...On a personal note, at last I can use the word "perspicacity" correctly...
My sister gave me this.......2005-05-31
This book is very, very good. My sister is totally into poetry and I'm not but she read this book the Marino Mission, and totally dug it, and Im never reading her stuff, but this was great! A teen romance, but with better writing than what's normal, and definitely NOT BORING. Although it's about a very cute guy hooking up with the heroine in the book. it's really a quite good because its got great adventure and a * thrilling * story. I'm in 9th grade but my sister is in 11th and gets "A"s where I do not, but I learned so much from this book, many new words, because of the notes at the bottom. But mainly I loved the story, I Loved it!

Difficult to continue reading.......2006-06-10
This book, though perceived valuable by a few other readers, is a tough book to get through. It is such a slow read that I couldn't read it carefully and thoughtfully after the first hundred pages - I simply skimmed the rest. There are many many many other behavioral books that use real-world stories to get the point across that there are different types of employees, bosses, leaders. This book does it in a repetitious and slow fashion, causing me, the reader, to have to set the book down after less than an hour of reading because of how boring and difficult the metaphors and wording was to read completely through. Not only was the authors writing difficult and not to the point, but the mention of dolphin, carp, shark scattered throughout this book was just plain boring. It may have a good lesson, but so do other, more enjoyable books.
All leaders must have in their library.......2004-10-25
I have read the book many times and I see new perspective every time; I bought many copies of the books for my best friends and my best enemies. I spoke so much about the life changing effects the book had on me that all the copies in my library are all on loan and I could not get them back again.
Life changing philosophy - THINK POWERFULLY - stimul action.......2000-01-24
I have used the many thought provoking ideas that really made an impression on me ever since I read a friends copy of this exciting book. I desparately want a copy for myself, but as it is now out of print, this is not possible. Can someone help. vleech@hot.co.za
The Dolphin book has stayed on my credenza for years!.......1999-09-04
The Strategy of the Dolphin has been an incredibly influential book in my career. Concepts like "do what you fear" and "talk about HOW you're talking about it" are part of my everyday thought. The metaphor of the dolphin works very well: an animal that can outsmart a shark! When something isn't working a Dolphin does something different! That's a great lesson for life.
Fabulous book that will be of benefit for years to come........1999-03-13
I read this book when it first was published because I was in an executive position with a not for profit organization. Throughout the years I have referred to it and each time it has revealed another secret in my life style. I loaned it to a friend and never got it back, so am now buying my second copy. Truly a keeper whether it is used for business or success in your personal endeavors.
Book Description
When this flagship thematic reader first appeared in the 1980s, instructors appreciated its rigorous approach and challenging essays. This revision harks back to the classic Dolphin Reader, with its timeless selections, lengthier readings, and streamlined apparatus.
Compiled by a longtime freshman composition coordinator and current director of a writing-across-the-curriculum program, The Dolphin Reader is designed to engage students and provide instructors with flexibility and variety. The 87 carefully selected, class-tested readings are arranged in thematic units that prepare students to face some of the central questions in a wide range of academic disciplines. While the selections vary in level of challenge, all are solid models of clarity and style. Unlike many freshman readers, The Dolphin Reader also includes a unit of longer nonfiction that ties together themes from several units.
- The 87 high-interest selections, ranging from the classic to the contemporary, and featuring a variety of genres, topics, and styles, offer instructors countless options for teaching. Writers include Flannery O'Connor, Gloria Steinem, E.M. Forster, Alice Walker, George Orwell, and Martin Luther King, Jr.
- New! Updated assignments and paper topics guide students to write in various styles, from autobiographical to historical, while helping them make connections and comparisons among essays.
- New Unit! A unit of four nonfiction masterpieces includes Lytton Strachey's "Florence Nightengale" and Joan Didion's "Slouching Toward Bethlehem." These renowned longer selections are not available in comparable readers, and they give students an opportunity not only to read some of the finest prose of the last century, but also to apply insights drawn from several of the thematic units to a longer work.
- One-third of the selections are chosen to guide students toward reportage and argumentation, rather than personal response writing.
- New! The Instructor's Resource Manual has been entirely rewritten to make it even more useful to the professor, with hundreds of questions for discussion and writing; lesson plans and reading quizzes for each unit; and summaries, lesson plans, and style exercises for every selection.
- New! Revised style exercises in the Instructor's Manual, drawn from reading selections, offer classroom activities for sentence construction and highlight various authors' ways of handling technical points that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Customer Reviews:
The Dolphin reader is a collection of Essays.......2005-11-03
These collection of Essays are thought provoking. I first read this entire book back in 1990 when it was required reading for my English 101 Class in College.
We were not required to read the whole book, but after taking the class, I found that I could not get enough of these essays, and so I ended up finishing every one of the essays.
If you want a place to go for a collection of writings from some of the most prominent writers in our time, this is the book for you.

On an island that looks like a big fish sunning itself on the sea, there were indaians living on that island many years ago. The villagers are taken by a ship to the east, but a girl was left behind. Book Description
Best-selling author Colleen Coble's trademarks-rich characterizations of people and animals combined with page-turning suspense and compelling romance-make this suspense series set in Hawaii a must-read.
While vacationing mainlanders and island locals revel in the cool waters and the sunny beaches of Kauai, Hawaii, a missile test goes off-course, destroying a local tourist boat and killing several passengers. Could sloppy science be at fault, or could sabotage be the culprit?
When the investigation leads nowhere, Kaia Ohana, island resident and dolphin researcher, is called upon by Jesse Matthews, head of security at the naval base, to help. Aided by dolphins Kaia's been teaching to communicate, Kaia and Jesse must try to stop a terrorist before he can strike again.
Customer Reviews:
Mystery, Romance, Travel Book.......2007-09-18
I fell for the dolphin.
This is a great blend of mystery, romance and travel writing. You get a great picture of the beauty of Hawaii along with an interesting story and compelling characters.
Decent mystery imbedded in a rocky romance.......2007-04-05
The suspense side of the story is engaging, but the romance between the two main characters seems forced - the immediate attraction Jesse feels for Kaia is almost obsessive when he should be concentrating on rescuing people rather than wondering if she is single. After our rocky introduction to Jesse's character, the relationship continues to develop in an unbelievably awkward fashion, even though the author incorporates many of the classic elements: boy meets girl, boy has conflict with girl, boy gets girl.
I LOVED Colleen Coble's Alaska Twilight! This is one clever, and very funny writer! And the way she involves animals in her stories makes them even more appealing. I'm sorry that Distant Echoes didn't engage me the same way.
Almost as nice as being there..........2006-04-18
Distant Echoes by Colleen Coble isn't just a good read--it's a mini-vacation. Anyone who has ever spent time in our glorious fiftieth state (or dreamed of doing so) will appreciate Colleen's accurate descriptions of the lovely island of Kauai. I, for one, am ready to go back for another visit, this time time with Colleen's second Aloha Reef book, Black Sands, to keep me company.
"Distant Echoes" is a great read........2006-02-05
I loved this book. Full of suspense and beauty, Coble's book, "Distant Echoes" contains vivid, believable characters with enough conflict to keep you guessing until the end. This is a great book.
Take an imaginary vacation.......2005-09-29
Sink your teeth into a piece of ripe, juicy mango and inhale its fragrance as you meander through the monkeypod trees. Step out across sun-kissed sand and into the turquoise waves. Feel the nostrum of a dolphin bump your leg, begging you to come play. Take hold of the offered fin, and savor the ride as she leads you out into deeper waters.
No, you haven't entered a travel brochure. Allow me to introduce you to Colleen Coble's exotic new Hawaiian series, Aloha Reef.
In the opening chapters of book one, Distant Echoes, dolphin researcher Kaia Oana and her brothers are enjoying a typical day on the water. Her brothers fish as Kaia swims with Nani, one of the bottle-nosed dolphins she is teaching to communicate.
Then, as they prepare to head back to shore, disaster strikes. An errant missile sweeps past them and hits a tourist boat. Kaia and her brothers race to rescue survivors from the water as a military vessel hurries to the scene. Fatalities are few, but one casualty brings the tragedy close to home for Kaia and her family.
Lieutenant Commander Jesse Matthews watches the scene from his military vessel. Testing of the new missile defense system failed. But was it just a computer error? A witness on the tour boat claims the missile came straight at them, as if they were the target. And a recent break-in at the naval base raises the question: Was this just an accident, or did someone tamper with the missile system?
The security of the naval base is Jesse's main concern. He enlists Kaia and her dolphin to help protect the naval base waters after break-ins continue at the compound. But when stolen missile secrets turn up in Jesse's house, he and Kaia have no option but to continue the investigation on their own. As they search deeper for the truth, and members of their families become involved, the investigation takes on a frighteningly personal level.
Distant Echoes drew me in from page one. Colleen Coble's rich descriptions swept me across the ocean and placed me firmly on Hawaiian soil. I could smell the tropical air, hear the surf against the beach, and see the gentle movements of the hula. Not to mention feel the terror of coming face to face with a cane spider!
If you are in need of an imaginary vacation, and you're looking for a romantic suspense with lifelike characters, and a plot that will keep you guessing right to the last page, then Distant Echoes is the book for you.
