Book Description
New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult is widely acclaimed for her keen insights into the hearts and minds of real people. Now she tells the emotionally riveting story of a family torn apart by conflicting needs and a passionate love that triumphs over human weakness.
Anna is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate -- a life and a role that she has never challenged...until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is. But unlike most teenagers, she has always been defined in terms of her sister -- and so Anna makes a decision that for most would be unthinkable, a decision that will tear her family apart and have perhaps fatal consequences for the sister she loves.
My Sister's Keeper examines what it means to be a good parent, a good sister, a good person. Is it morally correct to do whatever it takes to save a child's life, even if that means infringing upon the rights of another? Is it worth trying to discover who you really are, if that quest makes you like yourself less? Should you follow your own heart, or let others lead you? Once again, in My Sister's Keeper, Jodi Picoult tackles a controversial real-life subject with grace, wisdom, and sensitivity.

Moving in many ways.......2007-10-02
I couldn't wait to read this book and am happy I did. Although, after reading it, I decided to put Jodi Picoult away for a bit. I read 4 of her books in a row and they have a way of getting you where it hurts. This book was very well written, as usual. I felt very bad for both sisters. I found myself emotionally tied to the entire family, with the exception of the mother. I felt she was very tunnel visioned and couldn't see Anna as any more than a "donor". All I know is for someone who doesn't cry, I bauled my eyes out at the end.
Loved It.......2007-10-02
I loved this book. fast moving, glib, cerebral, lovely and eloquent Jodi writes with a fierceness and simultaneousl eloquence.
I can't wait for the next book. If it's half as good as this one I'm a new fan.Cat's Cradle
Wow!...again, WOW!.......2007-09-28
I couldn't put this book down. Absolutely riveting. The story is told from each character's point of view. All well done for the most part, although occasionally Anna, the 13-year old, seemed on some level, way too old for her age, i.e. very eloquent at times which seemed a bit unbelievable to me. But maybe Anna's maturity was the point the writer was trying to make. Hint: Don't look to the last chapter until you get there.
A work of art........2007-09-20
An absolute work of art. I do not understand why people are complaining about the ending. Not every story has a happy ending; which is what makes this novel so riveting. It is based on what can happen in real life. Life is not a fairy tale. The novel is written beautifully and keeps the reader intrigued from the first page to the last.
My Sister's Keeper.......2007-09-18
Picoult tackles the touchy subjects of medical and parental ethics in this refreshingly original book about a family dealing with the disease of one of its own. Using multiple characters' thoughts and viewpoints, Picoult portrays the struggles of Kate, a teenager with leukemia, who must rely on her genetically altered younger sister, Anna, to keep her alive through regular blood transfusions and transplants. After years of invasive surgeries, Anna hires a lawyer to gain medical emancipation from her parents so she can stop being the guinea pig for her older sister and finally gain control of her own life. What follows is a rollercoaster ride of emotions as the two sisters, their brother Jesse, and their parents must essentially choose sides by supporting either Anna or Kate, thus nearly ripping the family apart.
With My Sister's Keeper, Picoult serves up a thought-provoking novel that fairly covers both sides of several hairy issues including genetic alteration, children's rights, and parents' allegiance to their kids. Although this book cannot be labeled as an ethical guidebook in any way, it can and does serve as a mediator between opposing viewpoints surrounding the aforementioned ethical dilemmas. By nature it forces the reader to take sides with or against each character in the book and evaluate one's own values and morals in the process using an intricate plot and intriguing character insight.
Whether one likes the book or not, this book's consequences will be felt by each reader. Although it may never alter the landscape of medical ethics, it has the power to change and shape the thought processes by which doctors and family members make tough decisions. By breaking down the case of Kate and Anna and making it into an emotional tale of family perseverance, everyone who reads this novel must evaluate their stance on each issue, making it more likely they will return to these evaluations in real life situations. Whether dealing with leukemia or a minor moral dillema, Picoult shows the reader how each can affect multiple characters and alter the outcome of a life. The life lessons found in the book can be used long after it has been finished.

A Guide to Survivorship for Women with Ovarian Cancer (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book)
ASIN: 1550090968 |
Product Description
Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic malignancies in the Western world. While substantial progress has been made, and more and more patients are living longer with the disease, the majority of patients with advanced ovarian cancer are not cured. Ovarian Cancer, a volume in the American Cancer Society Atlas of Clinical Oncology series, thoroughly discusses pathology, biology, epidemiology, genetics and screening. Specific chapters examine diagnosis and staging, surgical cytoreduction, and primary chemotherapy regimens. Renowned contributors lend their expertise to chapters on radiation therapy, early stage management, palliative surgery, and developmental and high-dose chemotherapy. Germ cell tumors and ovarian sex cord-stroma tumors are also examined. In addition, the text outlines the major progress made in the understanding of the biology of ovarian cancer and the molecular genetics of the disease.

Great Book.......2007-10-05
It's a great book for a concise and comprehensive review of cancer and its pathways.
fantastic book.......2007-06-14
This book is a fantastic read for anyone interested in the cancer biology. It is well-written, comprehensive, current, and the illustrations are superb. The enclosed CD-ROM of the book's figures has proved invaluable for creating Powerpoint presentations on various topics in cancer.

The Biology of Cancer CL, by Robert A. Weinberg.......2007-05-07
it is a must have book for someone in cancer research. It covers both molecular and biological aspects of cancer very well.
Comprehensive.......2007-03-10
As a colorectal cancer survivor, I've undertaken a self-study of my cancer in particular, and the disease in general. Saltz's Colorectal Cancer is the comprehensive text for me, but it is better read with a foundation in the nuts and bolts of the disease. Sompayrac's How Cancer Works is a wonderful text for explaining what the nuts and bolts are, but this book, Biology of Cancer, not only explains these in better detail, it also explains how researchers figured all this out. The illustrations, graphs and photos are worth the price of the book itself--you can see the discoveries unfold in front of your own eyes. You don't have to be a scientist to start reading it, but you will probably have to become something of a scientist and retain what you are absorbing as you progress through the book. This is a textbook that is something of an all-star collection of information from a variety of scientific research textbooks.
Book Description
She charmed America with her smart, likable, down-to-earth personality as she campaigned for her husband, then vice-presidential candidate John Edwards. She inspired millions as she valiantly fought advanced breast cancer after being diagnosed only days before the 2004 election. She touched hundreds of similarly grieving families when her own son, Wade, died tragically at age sixteen in 1996. Now she shares her experiences in Saving Graces, an incandescent memoir of Edwards’ trials, tragedies, and triumphs, and of how various communities celebrated her joys and lent her steady strength and quiet hope in darker times.
Edwards writes about growing up in a military family, where she learned how to make friends easily in dozens of new schools and neighborhoods around the world and came to appreciate the unstinting help and comfort naval families shared. Edwards’ reminiscences of her years as a mother focus on the support she and other parents offered one another, from everyday favors to the ultimate test of her own community’s strength—their compassionate response to the death of the Edwards’ teenage son, Wade, in 1996. Her descriptions of her husband’s campaigns for Senate, president, and vice president offer a fascinating perspective on the groups, great and small, that sustain our democracy. Her fight with breast cancer, which stirred an outpouring of support from women across the country, has once again affirmed Edwards’ belief in the power of community to make our lives better and richer.

saving graces.......2007-09-24
Felt this book artfully expressed loss. It included the gammet of feelings and expressions one might endure while experiencing loss of any type. Hopefully she also found solace in teaching us as well as finding herself. Would recommend to anyone because at some point, we all experience loss. Hopefully not as Elizabeth Edwards did.
My honor to read this life journey of E. Edwards.......2007-09-19
The book is a gift of her use of the English language. The use of words, the integrity of the writer shines through. She uses her gift to share her pain, pain many of us have felt but could not have put into words with the artistry that is just part of her. It is rare for a person to be able to put their soul in paper, but she has. Thank you, Elizabeth. Saving Graces: Finding Solace and Strength from Friends and Strangers
Saving Graces.......2007-09-17
Great book, well written. It makes you realize you can overcome any obstacle in life with family and support from friends.
Excellent........2007-09-14
Eliabeth Edwards writes with painful honesty and hope. She is an extrordinary woman and this glimpse into her soul is a wonderful read.
Wonderful book!.......2007-09-13
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I got a whole new insight into the Edwards family. Elizabeth didn't shy away from the pain caused by the untimely death of their wonderful son, Wade, or her initial experience of her breast cancer treatment. There is also an additional chapter in this paperback book regarding the return of her cancer. Her humor cracked me up several times, and I was so inspired by the whole family. They are certainly a strong family, both Elizabeth and John come from strong stock, and it shows. I for one, given the chance, will vote for John Edwards for President. I think he's the one we need to lead this country ahead and away from our current administration's boggling.

Book Description
Living Time is at once a personal odyssey, an intimate doctor-patient communication, and a prescriptive guide for patients and their families. Writing with wit and humility, Dr. Bernadine Healy shares the hard-won insights that transformed her own struggle with a deadly cancer more than seven years ago, affirming her identity as patient and doctor with the many who share this journey.
Together with more than ten million survivors in the United States alone, Dr. Healy, former director of the National Institutes of Health, is a close witness to the medical advances that have brought us to a turning point in the war on cancer. This quiet revolution is curing a growing number of cancers and transforming many others from a death sentence to a chronic illness, one that calls for vigilance but not despair.
Beginning with her own compelling story, Dr. Healy interweaves it with one of the most lucid narratives ever written of what cancer is, how it works in our bodies, and how we can defeat it. She explains how genetic research and other new approaches are radically altering diagnosis and treatment, and she offers precise and empowering ways for patients and their families to access the information and support they need to secure the best in modern cancer care. She also underlines the urgency of accelerating the pace of research that could map out and destroy cancer in the twenty-first century.
Dr. Healy is forthright about the rigors of treatment and the toll cancer still takes, but readers will come away from her book with the information, resources, and heartfelt encouragement they need to look forward to a future with hope.

A must for brain cancer patients/families.......2007-07-23
The first chapter of this book was mesmerizing. Could it mirror my family's crisis any more? It was very kind of Dr. Healy to share her experience. I now know that my family isn't the only one blindsided by an oligodendroglioma. There was a shift in the book, however, from personal to technical. It discusses how cancer happens on the cellular level. It's good information, but sometimes it read like a medical text. There is a lot of imformation on the types of research being done and the hope that all patients should have. It was general enough for anyone dealing with cancer, but particularly beneficial for those with brain cancer. She includes a wonderful list of resources for cancer patients. I also appreciated that even as a doctor, she encouraged cancer patients to make there own informed decisions about their health care.

Praise for The Cancer Treatment Revolution
"A wonderful journey through modern medical science, told with warmth and insight, brought to life through the stories of people confronting cancer. This book will inspire and educate both laymen and caregivers."
—Jerome Groopman, M.D., author of The Measure of Our Days and The Anatomy of Hope and Recanati, Professor, Harvard Medical School
"This is probably the best book on cancer that exists--beautifully written and unfailingly interesting, conveying a clear sense of hope for cancer patients and survivors. Cancer treatment has come a long way but not without intense struggles and passions, which David Nathan narrates from the inside as one of the leading players. He explains cancer more clearly than anyone else, and his portraits of great cancer doctors are sharp and unforgettable, a contribution to history."
—Richard Preston, author of The Hot Zone and The Demon in the Freezer
"No one is better positioned to tell the tale of the cancer treatment revolution of the last half century than David Nathan. A brilliant physician-scientist, he has been present at the cusps of history in this life-and-death field. The story he tells here is fascinating, and his book is captivating."
—Atul Gawande, M.D., author of Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science and Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance and Assistant Professor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School
"David Nathan is a true storyteller. In The Cancer Treatment Revolution, he tells stories that bridge cancer patients and cancer research as few others could. These gripping tales will be appreciated by those who live with cancer and those who strive to create new therapies."
—Thomas Cech, Ph.D., recipient of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and President of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute
"David Nathan, one of the nation's preeminent clinician-scientists, tells the stories of three cancer patients, revealing compelling human facets--the dedication of the remarkable teams that care for these patients and, even more, the bravery and fortitude of the patients and their families."
—Harold Varmus, M.D., recipient of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Medicine, President of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and former director of the National Institutes of Health
"Engaged by the compelling triumphs and tragedies of patients whose normal lives are inevitably altered by a life-threatening cancer, the reader of The Cancer Treatment Revolution will easily appreciate the impact of the new cancer diagnostics and therapies compared to even relatively recent cancer treatments."
—Karen Antman, M.D., Dean, Boston University School of Medicine
"This personal, highly readable account by one of the leaders of the cancer treatment revolution explains how the revolution has come about and how it will change the future."
—Sir Paul Nurse, Ph.D., President of Rockefeller University and recipient of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Medicine

A promise of Hope.......2007-05-13
The reader is left with the feeling that just around the corner specific cancer killing drugs will be available (as opposed to the current drugs which kill all cells in sight...(which is why patients become gravely ill from "chemo" treatments). The problem is, of course, how far is the corner..10 years, 20, more?
Still,it is worth reading and gives hope where there may only have been despair...
Cancer Treatment Revolution --- review.......2007-05-12
Very clearly written, warm hearted. To me the title suggested a more comprehensive coverage than there is. There is a very good introductory chapter and then 3 individual cases as examples of the medical progress. An excellent start on the subject.

A comprehensive list of all alternative and orthodox treatments for cancer.......2007-10-10
Having been recently diagnosed with colon cancer (removed by operation) and liver cancer (secondary) I needed to know some answers regarding future treatments. Having heard and seen the results of the 'orthodox' route I wanted none of that! This book informed me of all of the alternatives on offer and covered each protocol very thoroughly. I highly recommend this book to every cancer sufferer. You will not be disappointed. Incidentally I chose the Budwig route.
Insightful read.......2007-09-21
I found this book to be very insightful and I took alot of the information and worked it into my life. It shows a lot of ways to improve our health on a daily basis that could make an impact on our future health. Great book for anyone who has a loved one with cancer.
Fantastico!.......2007-09-15
I am an 18-year LIVER, not "survivor," of a diagnosis of low-grade, Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. I have lived 8-10 years LONGER than the "average" person lives with such a diagnosis. I have done that by doing as much alternative treatment---diet, psychology, exercise, supplementation, etc---as possible, and by using mainstream medicine as little as possible.
That said, I will say, about this book, that in my 18 years of researching cancer treatments, this is one of the best, if not THE BEST, books on cancer I have ever had the pleasure to read. It is concise and easy to understand. It is encouraging---it gives the reader real hope. And it is for BOTH those diagnosed with cancer, and for those who have not yet been diagnosed with cancer. I say "not yet diagnosed with cancer" because the statistics, in the United States, at least, say that ONE out of every TWO men will be diagnosed with cancer, and TWO out of every THREE women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in his or her life. So if you do not yet have cancer, get busy and read this book! If you do have a diagnosis of cancer, get busy and read this book! It is literally a LIFE-SAVER! Even if you were to spend $40 dollars on this book, that is less than you would spend on one visit to an oncologist, and this book will give you 4,000 times MORE GOOD INFORMATION on how to prevent or how to heal from cancer than an oncologist EVER will!
How to Fight Cancer & Win -- Saving Lives.......2007-08-23
The book was purchased for a friend undergoing radiation for lymphnoma cancer in chest (following lung cancer surgery and chemo). She was not very excited that I brought home a book. Eventually, she opened the book and begin to read.
The book has facts about cancer that she had never been told by her doctors. The natural resources, like wheatgrass, for healthy nutrition has made an enormous change in her body and how she has been able to handle the radiation. The doctor keeps asking her, "Are you sure you don't hurt?" Her answer is "No, I feel fine".
Read it........2007-07-23
This book really opened my eyes. I do not know why the American Cancer Association has not looked into trying this remedies. It sure is a pity.
Book Description
Cancer can now be cured, not just treated
We are not accustomed to thinking about a cure for cancer. We think of remission as the only possibility. But this book is not about remission. It is about a cure. This is possible because in 1990 Dr. Clark discovered the true cause of cancer. The cause is a certain parasite, for which I have found evidence in every cancer case regardless of the type of cancer. So lung cancer is not caused by smoking, colon cancer is not caused by a low roughage diet, breast cancer is not caused by a fatty diet, retinal blastoma is not caused b y a rare gene, and pancreatic cancer is not caused by alcohol consumption. Although these are all contributing factors, they are not THE cause. Once the true cause was found the cure became obvious. but would it work? I set a goal of 100 cases to be cured of cancer before publishing my findings. That mark was passed in December, 1992. the discovery of the cause and cure of all cancers has stood the test of time and here it is!
Customer Reviews:
Perhaps good for some.......2007-09-10
I tend to be very leery of books that promise any sort of "cure" or give false hopes. Although I had mixed emotions on this book, I do see how it can perhaps give hope to the most discouraged of cancer patients.
I don't think I'd recommend it to any of my cancer patients in general, but I do think that those of us in the medical profession might be able to pick out a few interesting parts and maybe recommend it to those few patients that are realistic but perhaps need a bit of encouragement with their diagonsis.
It was a quick read, though I tended to skip sections that bored me.
ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE FOR CANCER.......2007-08-10
VERY INTERESTING AND DETAILED LOOK AT CANCER - PARASITE AND TOXIN ARE CAUSES. ALSO MANY SIDE ITEMS OF GENERAL INTEREST FOR CONTINUED HEALTH AND I'M NOT FINISHED READING IT YET!
Give me a scientist's opinion anyday!.......2007-07-29
This book offers some very credible insights and a viable cancer treatment protocol. I have heard nothing but positive feedback, so far, from people who have tried this program, though the regimen is extreme (perhaps necessarily and certainly worth the effort) and there is some dispute as to the diet - she may allow too much carbohydrate/sugar. But I agree 100% with the rest of her protocol to fight fungus, heavy metals, etc. We live in a very toxic environment and will be lucky to live ¾ the lifespan of our parent, unless we learn ways of detoxing our bodies and changing our environment.
After over 20 years of medical research, one thing I have learned is that if you want to understand the processes leading to a particular medical condition, ask a scientist. Ask your doctor and you're likely to get a blank stare or a simplified (nonscientific and often illogical) explanation which will usually vary greatly from one doctor to the next. Simply put, doctors are NOT scientists and most certainly not nutritionists. (Would you trust a mechanic who didn't know what to put into your car's engine)?
I have left a doctor's office, on many occasion with my mouth agape. Their training comes directly from the pharmaceutical industry and it is sadly apparent to those who have their eyes open that if they don't have a drug for it or a surgery, you're doomed. If they DO have a drug for it, you are even more likely to be doomed, because you'll need a dozen other drugs to offset the effects of the first one. Don't forget that the #2 cause of death in this country is death by doctor, hospital or (legal) drug complications and that legal drugs are responsible for 40 times the number of deaths as illegal drugs, yet the allopathic community screams loudly about the dangers of alternative treatments though death at the hands of an alternative doctor wouldn't even begin to touch the number of deaths from Vioxx prescriptions alone (Vioxx killed my mother)!
Why do you think medical schools have a personality/psychological test for admission? They are looking for a certain type. Doctors, for the most part, tend to be good students, obedient and often without exceptional intelligence or creativity (there is indeed a vast difference between intelligence and good study habits, whereas the rare maverick doctor and great scientists tend to be the opposite - Einstein flunked kindergarten, was brilliant, creative and independent). It would astound most people if they were to be made aware of the inflated egos and insatiable ambition in the medical community - I have been appalled by the back-biting and outright plagiarism rife in their world. Many would rather sacrifice the lives of thousands than concede that their theories or failed methodologies have been incorrect all along and most of the rest are too afraid of losing their credibility via the powers that be (the AMA, FDA and other arms of the pharmaceutical cartel) and are intimidated not to speak up or try anything unconventional - they have seen what happens to those who dare to do so.
Be careful of the "established truth"...it usually lacks credibility. Pasteur got laughed out of the medical community, the doctor who suggested that obstetricians should wash their hands before delivering babies got banned and it took penicillin 30 years to be accepted by mainstream medicine. Idiots have always ruled the profession, all the way back to the barber/doctors - in fact I think they were wiser than today's counterpart - bloodletting, after all, is less dangerous than oxycontin or liposuction.
Now we have bogus "experts" paid by the cartels to debunk any cure that threatens the monopoly of big medicine (and oncology is BIG MONEY - in fact among the BIGGEST money in medicine). A couple of people on here (including a doctor) cited "Quackwatch" in order to debunk Hulda Clark. Just to give a taste of the witch-hunt that is going on today and who's behind it, read the following quote by the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation actually debunking the credibility of the leader of Quackwatch, and you'll understand the forces we are up against, as we strive to filter out the truth.
"Dr. Stephen Barrett of Quackwatch Exposed In Court Cases
At trial, under a heated cross-examination by Negrete, Barrett conceded that he was not a Medical Board Certified psychiatrist because he had failed the certification exam.
This was a major revelation since Barrett had provided supposed expert testimony as a psychiatrist and had testified in numerous court cases. Barrett also had said that he was a legal expert even though he had no formal legal training.
The most damning testimony before the jury, under the intense cross-examination by Negrete, was that Barrett had filed similar defamation lawsuits against almost 40 people across the country within the past few years and had not won one single one at trial.
During the course of his examination, Barrett also had to concede his ties to the AMA, Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Food & Drug Administration (FDA)."
My brother has been given 1 year to live and offered no hope of recovery from his rare stage IV cancer, by the allopathic community. But, in spite of their admitted inability to do ANYTHING other than drug for pain, the AMA, the drug cartel and their Gestapo (the FDA) have such a lock on the cancer cash cow, we have no alternative unless we find some doctor who is brave enough to help (in spite of the threat of losing their license - not because any of them have ever harmed anyone, but because they are cutting into chemo-profits. We speak in cryptic tones reminiscent of backstreet abortion days and it is very clear why Hulda Clark needed to move her treatments to Mexico, as have some Nobel Prize winners who have been persecuted by our FDA and their bosses (most of the cures I have heard of first hand have come out of Mexico, though the FDA is starting to put pressure on the Mexican government). Sadly those same mobsters are the prevalent bully in most countries because the pharmaceutical cartel is bigger than the oil cartel, worldwide. Follow the money.
Now, when I see that someone has been run out of the country or scoffed at by the "big boys," I take a second look at their treatments, because they are obviously successful enough to threaten someone's profit margin. God bless the rare doctors and scientists who are willing to stick their necks out and actually heal people, in spite of the ridicule and threats of persecution.
Amonia + Bleach = Cure for stupidity. .......2007-05-03
I have three words of inquirey: ARE YOU SERIOUS? This is the single most incredible, non-credible hoax I have ever read in my entire life. Anyone who reads this book and takes a single word to heart is spitting in the face of scientifically proven fact! Furthermore, they are putting power into the hands of an unqualified "Doctor," allowing her to continue with her ridiculous stipulations about parasites, electronic detectors, and teeth pulling. May the world's forces band together against this woman before she decides that the best course of action to cure the common cold includes drinking drain-o.
Not Much.......2007-04-08

Book Description
In Calvin Trillin’s antic tales of family life, she was portrayed as the wife who had “a weird predilection for limiting our family to three meals a day” and the mother who thought that if you didn’t go to every performance of your child’s school play, “the county would come and take the child.” Now, five years after her death, her husband offers this loving portrait of Alice Trillin off the page–his loving portrait of Alice Trillin off the page–an educator who was equally at home teaching at a university or a drug treatment center, a gifted writer, a stunningly beautiful and thoroughly engaged woman who, in the words of a friend, “managed to navigate the tricky waters between living a life you could be proud of and still delighting in the many things there are to take pleasure in.”
Though it deals with devastating loss, About Alice is also a love story, chronicling a romance that began at a Manhattan party when Calvin Trillin desperately tried to impress a young woman who “seemed to glow.”
“You have never again been as funny as you were that night,” Alice would say, twenty or thirty years later.
“You mean I peaked in December of 1963?”
“I’m afraid so.”
But he never quit trying to impress her. In his writing, she was sometimes his subject and always his muse. The dedication of the first book he published after her death read, “I wrote this for Alice. Actually, I wrote everything for Alice.”
In that spirit, Calvin Trillin has, with About Alice, created a gift to the wife he adored and to his readers.

nostalgic without being sappy.......2007-09-09
A nice memoir and tribute to his wife. Like he wrote in one of his recent books - "I wrote this for Alice. Actually, I wrote everything for Alice". That's a tribute, if there ever was one. A short rumination about a love story of a lifetime, without being overly sappy or sentimental, as it very well could have been. Like her life, the book came to an end too soon. The last few pages were really poignant and well-written, but after recovering from this, I was left with the desire to read more of Calvin's books (Alice, Let's Eat, Travels with Alice etc.) in which he writes more about the good times he had shared with Alice.
A good read.......2007-08-31
A good read however in my opinion a lot of the book is a repeat from articles that Calvin Trillin has published prior to the book. I still enjoyed the reread.
Calvin's rib.......2007-07-14
Trillin has not written an unflinchingly realistic account of his wife Alice's death, nor a diary of his coping with her absence from his life. Having recently finished and enjoyed Joan Dideon's A YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING, I have to admit I was looking for more of the same. ABOUT ALICE is more of a eulogoy and affectionate amends-making. The wrong that needed mending is Trillin's writerly habit of employing his wife as a sort of stock character in his essays over the years, a wise and pithy speaker of truths and lightening-rod-like reality grounder. In any case, this seems to have been an offense Alice was able to bear. If one thinks of Mrs. Peter (Jennie) Mayle and Mrs. E.B. (Katharine) White, she was certainly in good company.
Trillan's remembrances of Alice are neither saccharine nor uncomfortably private. What the reader walks away with is a sense of a unique but fairly ordinary woman who came to terms with both her advantages and liabilities (her beauty and intellect on one hand, her early encounter with lung cancer on the other), had a strong civic conscience, highly valued human relationships, took her parental responsibilities extremely seriously, appreciated every moment she was given, and in the end (and to the end) felt herself to be a very lucky person. She was an optimist but no fool. Her story is inspiring. This book would be a great one to give to high school graduates and other young people just starting to wrestle with the question of what they want to do with their lives.
ABOUT ALICE IS ABOUT AUTHENTIC MARRIED LOVE.......2007-07-05
NEW YORK MAGAZINE writer Calvin Trillin loves his wife, Alice, in genuine ways, not in the gushy, over simplified expressions of a Hallmark card. ABOUT ALICE chronicles their years of marriage and exposes a husband's heart of adoration with humor and surrender to the gentle battle of the sexes that prevails. This is an evening's read that will lift your spirit and maybe cause you to ask yourself: why can't all relationships be like this? In the terrible statistics of marriage and divorce, Cal and Alice Trillin are a winning "how to"couple - how to make a marriage work with a sense of wonder, humor, humility, admiration and wonder. In the few short pages, I fell in love with Alice and admired Cal for his wit and wisdom, for having a gift to observe a rare and beautiful spirit in all her passion and frailty for life. THis is one of those books that restores faith in marriage.
Hum?.......2007-07-05
This is the tribute he wrote to his beloved wife of many years? It did not at all live up to the hype I read in the NYT and Washington Post.
